Elevated concentrations of Hg are present (averaging 36 μg/g), mainly as cinnabar, in the Murray Brook Au deposit, located in northern New Brunswick, Canada. After the mined ore was subjected to CN leaching, the tailings were deposited in an unsaturated pile, and 10 a after mine closure an estimated 4.7 × 103 kg of CN and 1.1 × 104 kg of Hg remain in the pile. Elevated Hg concentrations have been measured in the groundwater (up to 11,500 μg/L) and surface water (up to 32 μg/L) down-gradient of the tailings. To investigate the controls on Hg mobility and leaching persistence, laboratory experiments were conducted using unsaturated columns filled with tailings. Within the first 0.2 pore volumes (PV) eluted, the concentrations of Hg and CN increased to peak concentrations of 12,900 μg Hg/L and 16 mg CN/L, respectively. In the subsequent 0.9 PV, concentrations decreased to approximately 1300 μg Hg/L and 2.8 mg CN/L. Thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that >99.8% of the mobilized Hg in the tailings pore water is in the form of Hg–CN complexes, indicating that Hg mobility to the surrounding aquatic environment is directly dependent on the rate of CN leaching. One-dimensional transport simulations suggest that leached CN can be partitioned into conservative (24%) and non-conservative (76%) fractions. Extrapolation of simulation results to the field scale suggests that CN, and by extension Hg, will continue to elute from the tailings for at least an additional 130 a.  相似文献

The Abdasht complex is a major ultramafic complex in south-east Iran (Esfandagheh area). It is composed mainly of dunite, harzburgite, podiform chromitites, and subordinate lherzolite and wehrlite. The podiform chromitites display massive, disseminated, banded and nodular textures. Chromian spinels in massive chromitites exhibit a uniform and restricted composition and are characterized by Cr# [= Cr / (Cr + Al)] ranging from 0.76 to 0.77, Mg# [= Mg/(Mg + Fe2 +)] from 0.63 to 0.65 and TiO2 < 0.2 wt.%. These values may reflect crystallization of the chromian spinels from boninitic magmas. Chromian spinels in peridotites exhibit a wide range of Cr# from 0.48 to 0.86, Mg# from 0.26 to 0.56 and very low TiO2 contents (averaging 0.07 wt.%). The Fe3 +# is very low, (< 0.08 wt.%) in the chromian spinel of chromitites and peridotites of the Abdasht complex which reflects crystallization under low oxygen fugacities. The distribution of platinum group elements (PGE) in Abdasht chromitites displays a high (Os + Ir + Ru)/(Rh + Pt + Pd) ratio with strongly fractionated chondrite-normalized PGE patterns typical of ophiolitic chromitites. Moreover, the Pd/Ir value, which is an indicator of PGE fractionation, is very low (< 0.1) in the chromitites. The harzburgite, dunite and lherzolite samples are highly depleted in PGE contents relative to chondrites. The PdN/IrN ratios in dunites are unfractionated, averaging 0.72, whereas the harzburgites and lherzolites show slightly positive slopes PGE spidergrams, together with a small positive Ru anomaly, and their PdN/IrN ratio averages 2.4 and 2.3 respectively. Moreover, the PGE chondrite and primitive mantle normalized patterns of harzburgite, dunite and lherzolite are relatively flat which are comparable to the highly depleted mantle peridotites. The mineral chemistry data and PGE geochemistry indicate that the Abdasht chromitites and peridotites were generated from a melt with boninitic affinity under low oxygen fugacity in a supra-subduction zone setting. The composition of calculated parental melts of the Abdasht chromitites is consistent with the differentiation of arc-related magmas.  相似文献

The Jinding Zn–Pb deposit located in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic Lanping Basin of southwest China has ore reserves of ∼ 220 Mt with an average grade of 6.1% Zn and 1.3% Pb. The mineralization is hosted by sandstone in the Early Cretaceous Jingxing Formation and limestone breccia in the Paleocene Yunlong Formation. Mineralization in both types of host rocks is characterized by a paragenetic sequence beginning with marcasite–sphalerite (Stage 1) followed by pyrite–marcasite–sphalerite–galena (Stage 2), and then galena–sphalerite–pyrite–sulfate–carbonate (Stage 3). Pyrite from these stages have different δ33S compositions with pyrite from Stage 1 averaging − 9.6‰, Stage 2 averaging − 8.9‰, and Stage 3 averaging + 0.3‰. Sphalerite hosted by the sandstone has similar δ66Zn values ranging from 0.10 to 0.30‰ in all stages of the mineralization, but sphalerite samples from the limestone breccia-hosted ore show variable δ66Zn values between − 0.03 and 0.20‰. Our data on sphalerite precipitated during the earlier stages of mineralization has a constant δ66Zn value and cogenetic pyrite displays a very light sulfur isotope signature, which we believe to reflect a sulfur source that formed during bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). The Stage 3 sphalerite and pyrite precipitated from a late influx of metal-rich basinal brine, which had a relatively constant variable δ66Zn isotopic composition due to open system isotope fractionation, and a near zero δ33S composition due to the influence of abiotic thermochemical sulfate reduction from observed sulfates in the host rock.  相似文献

First results of the analysis of GPS measurement data obtained from 18 sites of two local networks in the vicinity of Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) for the period 2010–2015 have been presented. Horizontal velocity vectors are consistent with each other in the ITRF2014 system and with the velocities of the IGS permanent station ULAB. The sites move in the E–SE direction at a rate of 25–30 mm/yr, with the displacement azimuth averaging 105°. With respect to Eurasia, the vectors for most of the sites are slighly turned to the south, but they are still of SE orientation with the azimuth range of 130°–150° and magnitude values of 2–4 mm/yr. Relative horizontal velocities tend to decrease towards southeast that determines a zonal distribution of different type of relative strain patterns. The western part of the Ulaanbaatar network is characterized by the W–E oriented extension with the elongation rate ε1 = 12–16 × 10–8 yr–1. The shortening NW–SE trending strain with calculated value ε2 = 22.4 × 10–8 yr–1 characterizes the network’s eastern part. The highest values of the maximum shear strains (εmax = 10–14 × 10–8 yr–1) form an extended area in the center of the testing ground, which is elongated in the northeastern direction, conformably with the strike of the major geologic structures. The strain distribution pattern of the Emeelt network located within the eponymous seismogenic structures is characterized by the crustal elongation (5 × 10–6 yr–1) trending SE–NW and less pronounced shortening in the SW–SE directions. The axial part of the fault crossing the network in the NW direction exhibits maximum deformations.  相似文献

Mylonite textures in granodiorite boulders are responsible for higher rates of surface denudation of host rocks and the progressive development of unusual rock weathering features, termed weathering posts. These textures are characterized by smaller grain sizes, higher biotite content, and a higher biotite axial ratio in host rocks relative to weathering posts. Elemental concentrations do not show a significant difference between weathering posts and the host rocks in which they are found, and this reflects the absence of a weathering residue on the rock surfaces. Chemical weathering loosens the bonds between mineral grains through the expansion of biotite, and the loosened grains fall off or are blown off the boulder surface and continue their chemical alteration in the surrounding soil. The height of weathering posts on late Quaternary moraines increases at a linear rate of ~ 1.45 ± 0.45 cm (1000 yr)? 1 until post heights reach the diameter of host rocks. Such a rate of boulder denudation, if unrecognized, would generate significant errors (> 20%) in cosmogenic exposure ages for Pleistocene moraines. Given the paucity of boulders with diameters that significantly exceed 1.5 m, the maximum age of utility of weathering posts as a numeric age indicator is ~ 100 ka.  相似文献

Deep-sea sediments can contain relatively high concentrations of rare earth elements and yttrium (REY), with a growing interest in their exploitation as an alternative to land-based REY resources. To understand the processes that lead to enrichment of the REY in deep-sea sediments, we have undertaken a detailed geochemical study of sediments recovered from the Atlantic Ocean, on a transect along ~ 24°N that includes the deep Nares Abyssal Plain and the Canary and North America Basins.Total REY concentrations (ΣREY) range from 7.99 to 513 ppm, and total concentrations of the heavy REY (Eu - Lu) range from 0.993 to 56.3 ppm. REY concentrations are highest in slowly accumulating pelagic red clays, especially in samples that contain ferromanganese micronodules. Factor analysis reveals that hydrogenous Fe- and Mn-(oxyhydr)oxides are the primary REY carrier phase in the red clays. In situ analysis of individual micronodules confirms that they have high ΣREY (up to 3620 ppm). REY concentrations are higher in micronodules that have a hydrogenous source, characterised by higher Fe/Mn, compared to micronodules that have a diagenetic source. The ΣREY content of North Atlantic deep-sea sediments is ~ 4 times lower than in Pacific deep-sea sediments. We calculate that the area of seafloor required to extract ~ 10% of the global annual REY demand is ~ 100 km2, assuming removal of the upper 1 m of sediment.  相似文献

The podiform chromite deposit of the Soghan mafic–ultramafic complex is one of the largest chromite deposits in south-east Iran (Esfandagheh area). The Soghan complex is composed mainly of dunite, harzburgite, lherzolite, pyroxenite, chromitite, wehrlite and gabbro. Olivine, orthopyroxene, and to a lesser extent clinopyroxene with highly refractory nature, are the primary silicates found in the harzburgites and dunites. The forsterite content of olivine is slightly higher in dunites (Fo94) than those in harzburgites (Fo92) and lherzolites (Fo89). Chromian spinel mainly occurs as massive chromitite pods and as thin massive chromitite bands together with minor disseminations in dunites and harzburgites. Chromian spinels in massive chromitites show very high Cr-numbers (80–83.6), Mg-numbers (62–69) and very low TiO2 content (averaging 0.17 wt.%) for which may reflect the crystallization of chromite from a boninitic magma. The Fe3 +-number is very low, down to < 0.04 wt.%, in the chromian spinel of chromitites and associated peridotites of the Soghan complex.PGE contents are variable and range from 80 to 153 pbb. Chromitites have strongly fractionated chondrite-normalized PGE patterns, which are characterized by enrichments in Os, Ir and Rh relative to Pt and Pd. Moreover, the Pd/Ir value which is an indicator of PGE fractionation ranges from < 0.08 to 0.24 in chromitite of the Soghan complex. These patterns and the low PGE abundances are typical of ophiolitic chromitites and indicating a high degree of partial melting (about 20–24%) of the mantle source. Moreover, the PdN/IrN ratios in dunites are unfractionated, averaging 1.2, whereas the harzburgites and lherzolites show slightly positive slopes PGE spidergrams, together with a small positive Ru and Pd anomaly, and their PdN/IrN ratio averages 1.98 and 2.15 respectively. The mineral chemistry data and PGE geochemistry, along with the calculated parental melts in equilibrium with chromian spinel of the Soghan chromitites indicate that the Soghan complex was generated from an arc-related magma with boninitic affinity above a supra-subduction zone setting.  相似文献

The historical (1932–1971) Bralorne mine produced over 87 million grams of Au from an archetypal orogenic lode gold deposit in southwest British Columbia. High concentrations of As in mine drainage, however, represent an on-going environmental concern prompting a detailed study of effluent chemistry. The discharge rate at the mine portal was monitored continuously over a fourteen-month period during which effluent samples were collected on a quasi-weekly basis. Water samples were also collected on synoptic surveys of the adit between the portal and the main source of flow in the flooded workings. Total concentrations of As in the mildly alkaline (pH = 8.7) portal drainage average 3034 μg/L whereas at the source they average 5898 μg/L. As emergent waters from the flooded workings flow toward the portal, their dissolved oxygen content and pH increase from 0 to 10 mg/L and from 7.7 to 9, respectively. Near the emergence point, dissolved Fe precipitates rapidly, sorbing both As(III) and As(V). With increasing distance from the emergence point, dissolved As(III) concentrations drop to detection limits through sorption on hydrous ferric oxide and through oxidation to As(V). Concentrations of dissolved As(V), on the other hand, increase and stabilize, reflecting lower sorption at higher pH and the lack of available sorbent. Nonetheless, based on synoptic surveys, approximately 35% of the source As load is sequestered in the adit resulting in As sediment concentrations averaging 8.5 wt%. The remaining average As load of 1.34 kg/d is discharged from the portal. Partitioning of As(V) between dissolved and particulate phases in portal effluent is characterized by a sorption density of 0.37 mol As (mol Fe)−1 and by a distribution coefficient (Kd) of 130 L/g HFO. The relatively high sorption density may reflect co-precipitation of As with Fe oxyhydroxides rather than a purely adsorption-controlled process. Results of this study show that the As self-mitigating capacity of drainage from orogenic lode gold deposits may be poor in high-pH and Fe-limited settings.  相似文献

The mineral separate GA1550 biotite has become an international standard for K/Ar and 40Ar/39Ar dating studies, although it was prepared as an intralaboratory standard at ANU to monitor tracer depletion from a gas pipette. It is one of a small number of samples that has been calibrated against 38Ar tracers, some of which had been mixed with known amounts of atmospheric argon, so that a so-called primary calibration has been performed. By measuring GA1550 biotite against additional tracers from the same batch we have determined the radiogenic argon content of this sample as 1.342 (± 0.007) × 10? 9 mol/g, and together with the measured K content of 7.645 (± 0.050) weight percent, we derive a best estimate for the K/Ar age as 98.5 ± 0.5 Ma, where the error is derived from averaging the ages determined relative to the 38Ar tracer.  相似文献

The ability of stormwater infiltration systems to retain Cr(VI) was tested by applying a synthetic stormwater runoff solution with a neutral pH and high Cr(VI) concentrations to four intact soil columns excavated from two roadside infiltration swales in Germany. Inlet flow rates mimicked normal (10 mm in 2 h) and extreme (100 mm in 3 h) rain events. The objectives were to understand the behaviour of the anionic and toxic Cr(VI) in soil at neutral pH and to asses treatment efficiency towards Cr(VI). During normal rain events Cr(VI) was largely retained (more than 50%), even though pH was neutral, while under extreme rain events approximately 20% of Cr(VI) was retained. In both cases effluent concentrations of Cr(VI) would exceed the threshold value of 3.4 μg/L if the infiltrated water were introduced to freshwater environments. More knowledge on the composition of the stormwater runoff, and especially the occurrence of Cr(VI), is needed.  相似文献
