 Adsorption/desorption and oxidation/reduction of arsenic at clay surfaces are very important to the natural attenuation of arsenic in the subsurface environment. Although numerous studies have concluded that iron oxides have high affinities for the adsorption of As(V), very little experimental work has addressed the arsenic attenuation capacities of different clay minerals and aging process affecting the transformation of arsenic. The abundance of clay minerals in a variety of geochemical environments and their influence on adsorption of contaminants suggests a need for more experimental work to characterize the adsorption desorption, and oxidation of arsenic on clay minerals. In this investigation three types of clay mineral were studied: the 1 : 1 layer clays [halloysite (IN), sedimentary M-kaolinite, and weathered EPK-kaolinite]; the 2 : 1 layer clays [illite (MT) and illite/montmorillonite (MT)]; the 2 :>: 1 layer clay [chlorite (CA)]. The halloysite and the chlorite had much greater As(V) adsorption (25–35 folds) than the other clay minerals. The clay minerals had lower As(III) adsorption than As(V) adsorption, and the adsorption was affected by pH. Desorption of arsenic from the clay minerals was significantly influenced by the aging process. The quantities of extractable As(III) and As(V) decreased with increasing aging time. The results demonstrated that oxidation of As(III) to As(V) occurred on the clay surfaces, whereas reduction of As(V) to As(III) was not found in any of the clay minerals studied. Experiments were conducted at 1 GPa on four starting materials to investigate the effects of variable mineral proportions on the melting systematics of compositionally fertile peridotitic assemblages. Starting materials were constructed by recombining Kilbourne Hole xenolith mineral separates by weight into four mixtures with mineral proportions olivine (Ol): orthopyroxene (Opx): clinopyroxene (Cpx): spinel (Sp) of 0.50:0.07:0.40:0.03 (FER-B), 0.50:0.46:0.01:0.03 (FER-C), 0.50:0.30:0.10:0.10 (FER-D), and 0.50:0.235:0.235: 0.03 (FER-E). Experiments were performed on a 1.27-cm (0.5 in.) piston-cylinder apparatus over the temperature interval 1270–1390 °C, using a variation of the diamond aggregate melt extraction technique employing vitreous carbon spheres in place of diamonds as the melt extraction layer. The solidus temperatures are similar for all the starting materials, with an average value of 1250 °C. In FER-D and -E, the near-solidus melting reaction for a lherzolite assemblage was determined to be of the form Cpx + Opx + Sp → melt + Ol. A subsequent reaction of the form Opx + Sp → melt + Ol was determined for FER-D after the exhaustion of Cpx. Over the entire temperature interval investigated for FER-B and -C, reactions were determined to be of the form Cpx + Sp → melt + Ol and Opx + Sp → melt + Ol, respectively. Melt percent (F) vs temperature (T) curves are concave up for all starting materials, demonstrating that isobaric melt productivity increases with progressive batch melting. At any given melt fraction, (dF/dT)P increases with increasing amount of Cpx in the starting material, indicating that the modal proportion of Cpx is one of the primary controls on isobaric melt productivity of upwelling peridotite. The concave up melt productivity functions for peridotitic assemblages determined in this study suggest that assuming linear or concave down melt productivity functions for modeling mantle melting may not be appropriate. The degradation and preservation affecting the biomarker record of ancient metazoa are not fully understood. We report on a five month experiment on the fate of fatty acids (FAs) during the degradation of recent whale vertebrae (Phocoena phocoena). Whale bones were analysed for extractable FAs and macromolecularly bound n-acyl compounds. Fresh bone showed extractable FAs dominated by 16:1ω7c, 16:0, 18:1ω9c and 18:0. Calculated degradation rate constant (k) values showed a rapid decrease in FA concentration, with k values higher for unsaturated than for saturated compounds (0.08/day for 18:1ω9c, 0.05/day for 16:0). The appearance or increased abundance of distinctive methyl branched (e.g. i/ai-15:0 and -17:0, 10Me-16:0) and hydroxy FAs (e.g. 10OH-16:0 and 10OH-18:0) were observed, providing clear evidence for the microbial degradation of bone organic matter and an input of lipids from specialised bacteria. Catalytic hydropyrolysis (HyPy) of demineralised extraction residues released up to 0.13% of the total n-C16 and n-C18 moieties in the degraded bones. This revealed that only a small, yet sizeable, portion of bone-derived fatty acyl units was sequestered into (proto)kerogen during the earliest stages of degradation.  相似文献

A steep‐margined carbonate platform is developed in the Carboniferous synorogenic foreland basin of northern Spain. Dips of 60–90° produced during Late Carboniferous thrusting enable cross‐sections of a 4‐km‐wide portion of the marginal area of this platform (Las Llacerias outcrop) to be studied in aerial photographs at a seismic scale. Three stratal domains are observed: (1) a horizontal‐bedded platform; (2) a clinoformal‐bedded margin with a relief of up to 500 m; and (3) a low‐angle toe‐of‐slope, where slope beds interfinger with basin sediments. The slope shows well‐bedded sigmoidal clinoforms with depositional dips ranging from 15° to 32°. Based on lithology and stratal patterns, four facies groups have been recognized: (1) a flat‐topped platform, in which thick algal boundstone, skeletal packstone–grainstone and peloidal micrite wackestone with a poorly rhythmic character prevail; (2) the platform margin and upper slope, characterized by microbial boundstone spanning a bathymetric range of ≈150 m measured from the break of slope; (3) a slope, predominantly composed of margin‐derived rudstones and breccias; and (4) a toe‐of‐slope to basin zone, where a cyclic alternation of spiculitic siltstones, packstone to grainstone calciturbidites and rudstone/breccia is visible. Five successive stages of platform development are deduced: (1) Bashkirian: flooding of the pre‐existing Serpukhovian platform giving rise to the nucleation of a low‐angle ramp to the south‐east of the study area with microbial mud‐mound accumulations, and breccias and calciturbidites on the margins; (2) Early Moscovian: an influx of siliciclastic sediment buried part of the platform and reduced the area of carbonate sedimentation; (3) Moscovian: aggradation and progradation of the carbonate system produced an extensive steep‐margined and flat‐topped shallow‐water platform (shelf system); (4) Latest Moscovian–earliest Kasimovian: drowning of the platform; and (5) Kasimovian: covering of the platform by marly calcareous ramp sediments.  相似文献

In this study, the impact of four-dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) analysis nudging is examined on the prediction of tropical cyclones (TC) in the Bay of Bengal to determine the optimum period and timescale of nudging. Six TCs (SIDR: November 13–16, 2007; NARGIS: April 29–May 02, 2008; NISHA: November 25–28, 2008; AILA: May 23–26, 2009; LAILA: May 18–21, 2010; JAL: November 04–07, 2010) were simulated with a doubly nested Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with a horizontal resolution of 9 km in the inner domain. In the control run for each cyclone, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System (GFS) analysis and forecasts at 0.5° resolution are used for initial and boundary conditions. In the FDDA experiments available surface, upper air observations obtained from NCEP Atmospheric Data Project (ADP) data sets were used for assimilation after merging with the first guess through objective analysis procedure. Analysis nudging experiments with different nudging periods (6, 12, 18, and 24 h) indicated a period of 18 or 24 h of nudging during the pre-forecast stage provides maximum impact on simulations in terms of minimum track and intensity forecasts. To determine the optimum timescale of nudging, two cyclone cases (NARGIS: April 28–May 02, 2008; NISHA: November 25–28, 2008) were simulated varying the inverse timescales as 1.0e?4 to 5.0e?4 s?1 in steps of 1.0e?4 s?1. A positive impact of assimilation is found on the simulated characteristics with a nudging coefficient of either 3.0e?4 or 4.0e?4 s?1 which corresponds to a timescale of about 1 h for nudging dynamic (u,v) and thermodynamical (t,q) fields.  相似文献

A method is proposed for adjusting the mass balance to characterize quantitatively the behaviour of minerals in anatexis. The method is based on an unconstrained simple mixing model that can be expressed as: where B , A 0, and A 1-n, are compositional vectors of segregate, source rock and source minerals, respectively. The most important concepts are: (1) degree of partial fusion: FMM= 1/a0; (2) mineral fractionation index: and (3) plagioclase differentiation index: . For a given mineral, the MFI values have the following meaning: (a) MFI <0: residual phase originated, at least partly, as a product of incongruent melting; (b) 0 > MFI <1: preferential retention in the residue; (c) MFI= 1: identical modal fraction in source and melt; (d) a0 > MFI > 1: preferential incorporation into the segregate, and (e) MFI > a0: external contribution to the anatectic system defined by a0 A 0. To test the method and illustrate its use, it was applied to two real problems of partial melting in the Peña Negra Anatectic Complex (Central Spain). The first is a very simple case of segregation of a diktyonitic neosome from an orthogneiss through partial melting located in vertical shear zones. This process is characterized by: (1) FMM= 0.51; (2) active incorporation of K-feldspar, plagioclase and biotite into the segregate; (3) disequilibrium melting of plagioclase; (4) residual behaviour of quartz and ilmenite. The second case concerns the formation of a cordierite-bearing granite from granodioritoid diatexites through an anatectic process, whose most salient characteristics are: (1) FMM= 0.45; (2) incongruent melting of biotite; (3) residual behaviour of plagioclase, which melted with a PDI of 1.22; (4) preferential incorporation of quartz into the segregate; (5) total extraction of K-feldspar from the residue.  相似文献

 Oxygen-18 (18O) and deuterium (D, or 2H) are routinely used in hydrologic, climatologic and geothermal studies. In hydrology, stable isotopes provide information on the type and topology (altitude and latitude) of the recharge waters and the historical effects on water, related to such physical processes as evaporation (in ponds), melting (of snow or ice), condensation, evapotranspiration and mixing. In geothermal studies, stable isotopes provide key information related to recharge and the various temperature-dependent water/rock isotope exchange reactions. The latter is assessed through the oxygen shift in the 18O/D correlation. At acid rock drainage (ARD) sites, water/rock interactions are primarily controlled by pH and oxidation potential. Using the isotopic characteristics of the rocks and the recharge waters as a basis, the relative oxygen shift of the ARD effluent can provide information on: (1) the residence time, (2) the rate of water/rock reactions, and (3) the actual pH at the rock/water interface. This paper offers a methodology for conducting oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies related to ARD and other mineral effluent problems. The methodology is based on: (1) comprehensive sampling of regional waters, ARD effluent and major contributing minerals and rocks, (2) isotopic and elemental analysis, and (3) data interpretation on the basis of a zero-dimensional (mass balance), multi-component mixing model.  This review focuses on studies of flow, transport and deformation processes at a scale of a single discontinuity. The paper provides an evaluation of: (1) various methods suggested for geometrical characterization of void structure; and (2) theoretical and practical problems arising from significant differences between the actual geometry of fracture void structure and its parallel plate representation. The use of an equivalent aperture concept is shown to be seriously misleading in: (a) evaluation of flow regime, and hence selection of appropriate flow laws; (b) correlating tracer and hydraulic tests, and assessment of solute transport properties; and (c) relating hydraulic and mechanical apertures, and predicting influence of stress perturbation and deformability. In a column experiment, acidic groundwater from Pinal Creek Arizona, a Cu mining area, was eluted through a composited alluvial sample obtained from a core that had been removed from a well downgradient of the acidic groundwater. The minerals present in typical grains and flakes in the alluvium before and after the elution were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive multichannel analyses (EDX). The concentrations of Fe, Ti, Mn, Si, Al, Na, Ca, K, Mg and S in these grains and flakes and in their microcrystalline surface coatings were measured by EDX.In addition to magnetite, hematite, and Fe-Ti oxides, Fe was most concentrated in micas (especially biotite-like flakes) and in the microcrystalline coatings. The measured elements in these microcrystalline coatings were primarily K, Fe, Al, and Si. The microcrystalline coatings on the mica flakes also contained Mg. The approximate l:3 Mg:Si atomic ratios (ARs)_of the biotite-life flake both before and after the elution would suggest that the Fe deposited during the elution had not substituted for Mg in these flakes. As a result of the elution, assuming no loss of Si, the averaged recorded Fe:Si AR of the microcrystalline coatings increased from (0.46 to 0.58):3.00.Iron deposition on the typical grains and flakes may relate to the presence of Fe in the particle on which it is deposited or to the presence of Fe in the microcrystalline surface coatings before elution. The data here are not sufficient for a statistical evaluation, but elution caused the following trends: (l) The Fe:Si AR increased in the (K,Fe,Al,Si)-microcrystalline surface coatings; (2) For the mica flakes, there was more than a 2-fold increase in the Fe:Si AR for the microcrystalline surface coatings of the Fe-rich biotite-like flakes but no measurable increase of the Fe:Si AR for the microcrystalline surface coatings of the muscovite-like flakes that contained 3–5 times less Fe; (3) Also for the biotite-like flakes, the increase in Fe:Si AR was greater in the flakes that had a higher Fe:Si AR; (4) The Fe deposition on the Fe-rich microcrystalline surface coatings of the feldspar was much greater than on the Fe-poor, beige quartz and feldspar grains that, prior to elution, had only CaS04 microcrystalline coatings; and (5) No Fe was deposited on Fe-poor grains with no microcrystalline surface coating.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Basic shallowing-upward cycles (shu-cycles) and five-bundled megacycles in the Latemar platform have been widely regarded as a model example for precessional and eccentricity forcing in the Mesozoic. Based on bio-/chronostratigraphic data, recent studies questioned this particular type of Milankovitch forcing on the Latemar cyclic series. We present an integrated model that incorporates (i) new cyclostratigraphic data, (ii) new and existing bio-/chronostratigraphic data and (iii) new spectral analyses. The basic shu-cycles in the Latemar reflect sub-Milankovitch control. Cycle bundles of 1 : 4–5 (megacycles : shu-cycles) indicate precessional forcing. They do not reflect eccentricity superimposed on precessional forcing. Spectral analyses reveal highly significant ratios in the large-scale cycle bundlings. Stacking patterns of 1 : 9.9 and 1 : 24.0 shu-cycles represent obliquity and short eccentricity forcing. Both sub-Milankovitch and Milankovitch forcing potentially controlled shallow subtidal carbonate deposition in Mesozoic greenhouse times. Cyclostratigraphic models require an integrated approach including bio- and chronostratigraphic data.  相似文献

Fatty acids isolated in sedimentary black barite (BaSO4) from Arkansas and Nevada were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The dominant or major fatty acids found in these beds of barite are C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1. The occurrence and distribution of these acids in this type of rock may serve as “molecular fingerprints” of microbial biogeochemical processes. The organic matter and associated microorganisms are shown to be trapped within the finely crystalline barite, thus forming a closed system for microbial diagenesis.Important differences that occur in the distribution of the lesser or minor fatty acids probably result from: (1) the nature of the progenitor organic detritus in the environment of barite deposition: and (2) the subsequent degree of microbiological alteration of the parent organic debris swept into and trapped in the depositional environment.Three general models of sedimentary environments are proposed in which anoxic conditions may prevail and where barium sulfate (BaSO4) may precipitate: (1) in a silled basin with semi-restricted circulation; (2) on an outer continental shelf where the slope is encroached upon by water of the oxygen minimum layer; (3) on a low-energy, inner shelf or semi-restricted embayment impinged by a wedge of anoxic water.The major geochemical and geological parameters which are believed to be the significant factors controlling the formation and high grade of these organic-rich, black bedded barites are: (1) a unique source of barium-rich fluid that only contains trace amounts of other elements; (2) the presence of an anoxic bottom environment within the depositional basin; (3) a reflux source of sulfate ion; (4) an adequate source of organic matter.The results of this study may serve as guidelines for future exploration in similar, untested sedimentary basins, especially those with rocks of middle Paleozoic age.  相似文献

This work reports on a concerted study of diatom-water interfaces for two marine planktonic (Thalassiosira weissflogii= TW, Skeletonema costatum= SC) and two freshwater periphytic species (Achnanthidium minutissimum= AMIN, Navicula minima= NMIN). Proton surface adsorption was measured at 25°C, pH of 3 to 11 and ionic strength of 0.001 to 1.0 M via potentiometric titration using a limited residence time reactor. Electrophoretic mobility of living cells and their frustules was measured as a function of pH and ionic strength. Information on the chemical composition and molecular structure of diatoms surfaces was obtained using FT-IR (in situ attenuated total reflectance) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The surface area of living cells and their frustules in aqueous solutions was quantified using Small Angle X-ray Scattering Spectroscopy (SAXS).These observations allowed us to identify the nature and to determine the concentration of the major surface functional groups (carboxyl, amine and silanol) responsible for the amphoteric behavior of cell surfaces in aqueous solutions. Taking into account the relative proportion of surface sites inferred from XPS and FT-IR measurements, a surface complexation model of diatom-solution interfaces was generated on the basis of surface titration results. The cell-normalized ratios of the three major surface sites {>COOH}: {>NH3}: {>SiOH} are 1:1:0.1, 1:10:0, 1:1:0.4 and 1:1:0.3 for TW, SC, AMIN and NMIN, respectively. The total amount of proton/hydroxyl active surface sites for investigated species ranges from 1 (NMIN) to 9 (SC) mmol/g dry weight. Normalization of these site densities to the area of siliceous skeleton yields values between 0.3 (NMIN) and 0.9 mmol/m2 (SC) which are an order of magnitude higher than corresponding values for organic-free frustules or amorphous silica. This suggests that the amphoteric properties and possibly the affinity for metal adsorption of diatom cultures are essentially controlled by the 3-D organic layers covering the silica frustule.  相似文献

为了研究颗粒配比对风积砂中毛细现象的影响,本文通过9种不同颗粒配比的风积砂进行室内竖管法毛细水上升高度试验,得出了如下结论:(1)在单一砂样试验中,粗砂(粒径0.5~2 mm)、中砂(粒径0.25~0.5mm)、细砂(粒径0.075~0.25 mm)、粉土(粒径<0.075 mm)的最大毛细水上升高度分别为7.5 cm、16.0 cm、30.5cm、98.0 cm;(2)在混合砂样试验中,中砂和粉土以9:1、8:2、7:3、1:1混合,最大毛细水上升高度分别为32.0 cm、51.0 cm、71.0 cm、73.0 cm。揭示了风积砂平均粒径越小,最大毛细水上升高度越高,并建立了风积砂毛细水上升高度h(cm)-时间t(min)lnh=a(lnt)2+b(lnt)+c形式的预测模型,其中a、b、c是与风积砂物理性质有关的物理量,为生态保护及工程应用提供参考依据。  相似文献

在对宽甸砖庙硼矿床的研究中发现了电气石与遂安石共生的现象,电气石为钙镁电气石,由电子探针分析结果计算的晶体化学式为:(Ca0.59Na0.355K0.06)(Mg2.557Fe0.1512+Ti0.013Cr0.002Ni0.006)(Al5.416Fe0.5642-(BO33Si 6.16 O16(OH)4,同围岩中的电气石相比:(1)淡绿色,多色性弱;(2)折射率为Ne=1.646,Ns=1.624;(3)成分上富Mg(MgO 11.47%)和Ca(CaO3.14%);相对贫Na(Na2O 1.09%),Fe(FeO4.63%)和Al(Al2O326.69%)(4)结构上d101=3.393A,a0=15.957±0.002,c0=7.227±0.001;(5)红外光谱晶格Si-O4四面体振动I1001>I1036。这些标型特征具有硼矿床的找矿指示意义。  相似文献

A Digital Elevation Model issued from the SRTM mission was assessed on a study area located in a dense equatorial forest setting in French Guiana. The SRTM DEM defined on a 90-m grid was compared to three check sources: (1) airborne laser altimeter data, (2) an accurate heliborne DEM, and (3) spot heights. The paper also includes a comparison with a radargrammetric RADARSAT DEM. The results show that the accuracy of the SRTM DEM is about 10 m (standard deviation of errors). For a given slope aspect, the absolute value and the standard deviation of elevation errors increase almost linearly with the slope value. The slope aspect has a major influence on the sign of the elevation error: elevations are underestimated for slope facing SRTM signal (foreslopes, northwest), and conversely in the opposite direction (backslopes, southeast). The study of regions situated beyond the western margin of the present-day Indian plate (Afghanistan principally) point to the following facts:
1. (1) During the Late Precambrian—Early Paleozoic, stratigraphical continuity existed between western and central Iran, Central Afghanistan, Salt Range and western Pakistan.
2. (2) During the Paleozoic a similar epicontinental cover existed in central Afghanistan, Kashmir and Tibet, with Gondwana tillites and associated cold fauna, such as in India (Umaria); however, a so-called Hercynian zone exists also in northern Iran—Hindu Kush and northern Pamir: it exibits a Middle Paleozoic unconformity (Upper DevonianCarboniferous) on metamorphic Early Paleozoic.
3. (3) The end of the Paleozoic, is marked by: a fracturation of the basement of the Hercynian zone, with powerful volcanic eruptions at the northern part of Hindu Kush, Kashmir (Panjal trap) and also Nepal (Nar valley) the formation of a geosynclinal zone at the southern part of Hercynian zone (Turkman, Penjaw).
4. (4) During the Jurassic: the geosynclinal evolution of the Turkman—Penjaw furrow accelerated, with the accumulation of flysch, radiolarites, ophiolites, olistolites and incipient HP metamorphism. A general subduction took place followed by a Neocimmerian orogenic phase with overthrusting of the central Afghanistan ranges on the scar of the geosynclinal furrows.
5. (5) During the Cretaceous: the geosynclinal evolution ended: Lower Cretaceous lies unconformably on the folded Jurassic flysch. In eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, during the Middle (?) or Upper Cretaceous, a new geosynclinal zone was created.
6. (6) During the Cenozoic, central Afghanistan was emerged; northwards, sedimentary basins were created along the Herat fault, with volcanic and magmatic activity. A southeastern geosynclinal furrow evolved with accumulation of flysch, ophiolites and finally molasse deposits (Katawas—Soleimans). Its western border began overthrusting, but this movement changed into a left lateral fault i.e., the presentday Chaman Arghandeh fault.
Conclusion: Two major phases of dislocation took place during the geological history of Gondwana: the first one began during the Permian and ended in the Jurassic; the second one began during the Cretaceous and is still active. The important Eocimmerian orogenic phenomena, existing in the Central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, took place at the edge of a Gondwana continental fragment, which was larger than the presentday Indian plate. Hydrogeomorphic methods for the regional evaluation of flood hazards   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The “upstream” approach to flood hazard evaluation involves the estimation of hydrologic response in small drainage basins. This study demonstrates the application of geomorphology to such studies in a region of unusually intense flooding in central Texas. One approach to flood hazard evaluation in this area is a parametric model relating flood hydrograph characteristics to quantitative geomorphic properties of the drainage basins. A preliminary model uses multiple regression techniques to predict potential peak flood discharge from basin magnitude, drainage density, and ruggedness number. After mapping small catchment networks (4 to 20 km2) from remote sensing imagery, input data for the model are generated by network digitization and analysis by a computer-assisted routine of watershed analysis. The study evaluated the network resolution capabilities of the following data formats: (1) large-scale (1:24,000) topographic maps, employing Strahler's “method of v's”, (2) low altitude black-and-white aerial photography (1:13,000 and 1:20,000 scales), (3) NASA-generated aerial infrared photography at scales ranging from 1:48,000 to 1:123,000, and (4) Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package S-190A and S-190B sensors (1:750,000 and 1:500,000 respectively). Measured as the number of first order streams or as the total channel length identified in small drainage areas, resolution is strongly dependent on basin relief. High-density basins on the Edwards Plateau were poorly depicted on orbital imagery. However, the orbital network definition of low-relief basins on the inner Texas Coastal Plain is nearly as accurate as results from large-scale topographic maps. Geomorphic methods are also useful for flood hazard zonation in “downstream” flood plain areas. Studies of the Colorado River valley near Austin, Texas, easily distinguished infrequent (100- to 500-year recurrence interval), intermediate (10- to 30-year), and frequent (1- to 4-year) hazard zones. These mapping techniques are especially applicable to the rapid regional evaluation of flood hazards in areas for which there is a lack of time and money to generate more accurate engineering-hydraulic flood hazard maps.  相似文献

Amer. 1992; 82 :1018–1040) of deformations caused by the movements of a shear or tensile fault in an isotropic half-space for finite rectangular sources of strain nucleus have been extended for a transversely isotropic half-space. Results of integrating previous solutions (Int. J. Numer. Anal. Meth. Geomech. 2001; 25 (10): 1175–1193) of deformations due to a shear or tensile fault in a transversely isotropic half-space for point sources of strain nucleus over the fault plane are presented. In addition, a boundary element (BEM) model (POLY3D:A three-dimensional, polygonal element, displacement discontinuity boundary element computer program with applications to fractures, faults, and cavities in the Earth's crust. M.S. Thesis, Stanford University, Department of Geology, 1993; 62) is given. Different from similar researches (e.g. Thomas), the Akaike's view on Bayesian statistics (Akaike Information Criterion Statistics. D. Reidel Publication: Dordrecht, 1986) is applied for inverting deformations due to a fault to obtain displacement discontinuities on the fault plane. An example is given for checking displacements predicted by proposed analytical expressions. Another example is generated for the use of proposed BEM model.
