Mafic hypabyssal rocks in the western Triassic and Paleozoicbelt provide important clues to the nature of accretion andarc evolution along this sector of the North American margin. In the east-central part of the belt, near Sawyers Bar, somediabases have been metamorphosed before and accompanying emplacementof the mid-Jurassic English Peak and Russian Peak granitoidswithin the North Fork/Salmon River + Stuart Fork amalgamatedterrane. Certain other dikes/sills, chiefly mafic microdiorites, cut the calc-alkaline plutons but are themselves deutericallyaltered; at least two of these mafic microdiorites near theEnglish Peak body possess hornfelsic textures. Thus, althoughmost mafic microdioritic hypabyssals seem to have been injectedafter granitoid emplacement, a few must have preceded plutonicintrusion. Macroscopic appearances, phase assemblages, mineralcompositions, and textures of the mafic microdioritic and metadiabasicdikes/sills are sufficiently alike to preclude the ready fieldand petrographic distinction of the different magma series.Bulk-rock chemistries fall into two groups, however, with slightlymore porphyritic, altered, synplutonic mafic microdiorite samplesbeing distinctly richer in Si, K, P, Rb, Sr, Zr, and light rareearth elements (LREE) relative to the Mg + Cr + Ni-rich, preplutonicmetadiabases. Analyzed mafic microdiorites have bulk-rock chemicaland isotopic compositions similar to the more ferromagnesianportions of the mid-Jurassic English Peak and Russian Peak plutoniccomplexes, whereas the metadiabases are comparable with theearly Mesozoic Salmon River metabasalts. Although the two groupsof dikes/sills probably overlap in age of emplacement, the maficmicrodiorite group is predominantly younger and uniform in oxygenisotopic composition (bulk-rock 18O 11•37, 11•4 and11•46) compared with the older, more intensely metamorphosed, and variably metasomatized Salmon River metadiabases (bulk-rock518 9•4, 11•0, and 15•3). Both types of maficdike/sill locally intrude the more easterly Stuart Fork terrane. Therefore, suturing and regional metamorphism of the outboardNorth Fork/Salmon River oceanic-island arc and inboard StuartFork subduction complex must have occurred during terminal stagesof injection of the pregranitoid diabases into the North Fork(oceanic-island basalts)/Salmon River (island-arc tholeiites)arc + Stuart Fork terrane, but before invasion of the amalgamatedterrane assembly by the calc-alkaline plutons and most compositionallyrelated synplutonic mafic microdiorite dikes/sills. Becauseof their lateral continuation both north and south of the SawyersBar area, the North Fork/Salmon River igneous suite documentsthe construction of an oceanic arc of considerable lateral extentin the central Klamaths before terrane accretion. Suturing wasimmediately followed by the mid-Jurassic intrusion of calc-alkalineplutons + syngranitoid mafic microdioritic hypabyssals.  相似文献

The timing of the initial Indo-Asian collision is a subject of debate for a long time. Besides, the magmatic trace of the collisional process is also unclear. In the present study, the authors report Early Eocene leucocratic sill/dike swarms in the northern edge of the Nymo intrusive complex of the Gangdese belt, southern Tibet. The Nymo intrusive complex was emplaced at ca. 50 –47 Ma and surrounded by the metamorphosed Jurassic-aged Bima Formation volcano-sedimentary sequence along its northern side. At outcrops, the leucocratic sills/dikes intruded along or truncated the deformed foliations of the host Bima Formation, which has been subject to high-temperature amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ca. 50 –47 Ma. Detailed cathodoluminescence image analyses reveal that the zircon grains of the leucocratic sills/dikes have core-mantle textures. The cores yield the Jurassic ages comparable to the protolith ages of the Bima Formation. In contrast, the mantles of zircon grains yield weighted mean ages of ca. 49–47 Ma, representing the crystallization timing of these leucocratic sills/dikes. The coeval ages for the Nymo intrusive complex, the high-temperature metamorphism, and the leucocratic sills/dikes indicate that a close relationship exists among them. The authors tentatively suggest that these leucocratic sills/dikes were generated from partial melting of the Jurassic-aged Bima Formation volcanic rocks, triggered by the high heat from the magma chamber of the Nymo intrusive complex. This Early Eocene tectono-thermal event of coeval magmatism, metamorphism and partial melting was most likely formed during the Indo-Asian collisional setting.©2021 China Geology Editorial Office.  相似文献

Numerous, interconnected, granitic dikes (<30 cm in widthand hundeds of meters in length) cut Ferrar dolerite sills ofthe McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. The source of the graniticdikes is partial melting of granitic country rock, which tookplace in the crust at a depth of about 2–3 km adjacentto contacts with dolerite sills. Sustained flow of doleriticmagma through the sill generated a partial melting front thatpropagated into the granitic country rock. Granitic partialmelts segregated and collected at the contact in a melt-rich,nearly crystal-free reservoir adjacent to the initial doleritechilled margin. This dolerite chilled margin was subsequentlyfractured open in the fashion of a trapdoor by the graniticmelt, evacuating the reservoir to form an extensive complexof granitic dikes within the dolerite sills. At the time ofdike injection the dolerite was nearly solidified. Unusuallycomplete exposures allow the full physical and chemical processesof partial melting, segregation, and dike formation to be examinedin great detail. The compositions of the granitic dikes andthe textures of partially melted granitic wall rock suggestthat partial melting was characterized by disequilibrium mineraldissolution of dominantly quartz and alkali feldspar ratherthan by equilibrium melting. It is also unlikely that meltingoccurred under water-saturated conditions. The protolith granitecontains only 7 vol.% biotite and estimated contact temperaturesof 900–950°C suggest that melting was possible ina dry system. Granite partial melting, under closed conditions, extended tens of meters away from the dolerite sill, yet meltsegregation occurred only over less than one-half a meter fromthe dolerite chilled margin where the degree of partial meltingwas of the order of 50 vol.%. This segregation distance is consistentwith calculated length scales expected in a compaction-drivenprocess. We suggest that the driving force for compaction wasdifferential stress generated by a combination of volume expansionas a result of granite partial melting, contraction during doleritesolidification, and relaxation of the overpressure driving doleriteemplacement. On a purely chemical basis, the extent of meltsegregation necessary under fractional and batch melting tomatch the Rb concentrations between melt and parent rock isa maximum of 48 and 83 vol.% melt, respectively. The relationship between the breakup of eastern Gondwanaland and the Kerguelen plume activity is a subject of debate. The Cona mafic rocks are widely exposed in the Cona area of the eastern Himalaya of south Tibet, and are studied in order to evaluate this relationship. Cona mafic rocks consist predominantly of massive basaltic flows and diabase sills or dikes, and are divided into three groups. Group 1 is composed of basaltic flows and diabase sills or dikes and is characterized by higher TiO2 and P2O5 content and OIB-like trace element patterns with a relatively large range of Nd(T) values (+ 1.84 to + 4.67). A Group 1 diabase sill has been dated at 144.7 ± 2.4 Ma. Group 2 consists of gabbroic sills or crosscutting gabbroic intrusions characterized by lower TiO2 and P2O5 content and “depleted” N-MORB-like trace element patterns with relatively higher, homogeneous Nd(T) values (+ 5.68 to + 6.37). A Group 2 gabbroic diabase dike has been dated at 131.1 ± 6.1 Ma. Group 3 basaltic lavas are interbedded with the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous pelitic sediments; they have compositions transitional between Groups 1 and 2 and flat to slightly enriched trace element patterns. Sr–Nd isotopic data and REE modeling indicate that variable degrees of partial melting of distinct mantle source compositions (enriched garnet–clinopyroxene peridotite for Group 1 and spinel-lherzolite for Group 2, respectively) could account for the chemical diversity of the Cona mafic rocks. Geochemical similarities between the Cona mafic rocks and the basalts probably created by the Kerguelen plume based on spatial–temporal constraints seem to indicate that an incubating Kerguelen plume model is more plausible than a model of normal rifting (nonplume) for the generation of the Cona mafic rocks. Group 1 is interpreted as being related to the incubating Kerguelen plume–lithosphere interaction; Group 2 is likely related to an interaction between anhydrous lithosphere and rising depleted asthenosphere enriched by a “droplet” originating from the Kerguelen plume, while Group 3 may be attributed to thermal erosion resulting in the partial melting of lithosphere during the long-term incubation of a magma chamber/pond at a shallow crustal level. The Cona mafic rocks are probably related to a progressively lithospheric thinning beneath eastern Gondwanaland from 150–145 Ma to 130 Ma. Our new observations seem to indicate that the Kerguelen plume may have started its incubation as early as the latest Jurassic or earliest Cretaceous period and that the incubating Kerguelen plume may play an active role in the breakup of Greater India, eastern India, and northwestern Australia.  相似文献

A Middle Paleozoic tectonothermal event in the eastern Siberian craton was especially active in the area of the Vilyui rift, where it produced a system of rift basins filled with Devonian–Early Carboniferous volcanics and sediments, as well as long swarms of mafic dikes on the rift shoulders. Basalts occur mostly among Middle Devonian sediments and are much less spread in Early Carboniferous formations. The dolerite dikes of the Vilyui–Markha swarm in the northwestern rift border coexist with the Mirnyi and Nakyn fields of diamond-bearing kimberlites. The voluminous dikes and sills intruded before the emplacement of kimberlites. The Mir kimberlite crosscuts a dolerite sill and a dike in the Mirnyi field, while a complex dolerite dike (monzonite porphyry) cuts through the Nyurba kimberlite in the Nakyn field. Thus, the kimberlites correspond to a longer span of Middle Paleozoic basaltic magmatism. The basalts in Middle Paleozoic sediments have faunal age constraints, but the age of dolerite dikes remains uncertain. The monzonite porphyry dike in the Nyurba kimberlite has been dated by the 40Ar/39Ar method, and the obtained age must be the upper bound of the dike emplacement. The space and time relations between basaltic and kimberlitic magmatism were controlled by Devonian plume–lithosphere interaction.  相似文献

Various types of igneous suites occurred between 930 Ma and 890 Ma in the North China craton are known to represent a large igneous province (LIP). However, the magma plumbing system of this LIP and its potential consequence to a breakup event are poorly understood. We report morphology, crystal size distribution of plagioclase, and whole-rock and mineral geochemistry profiles of this LIP represented by the two decoupled mafic sill complexes (Niutishan and Pingshan) in the Xuhuai basin. In terms of petrography and whole-rock geochemistry, unlike the lower-level doleritic Niutishan sill, the Pingshan sill is subdivided into an upper and a lower sequence that meets at a Sandwich Horizon but lacks stratification. The significant En reversals present an almost M-shaped profile that differs from a C-shaped profile as previously revealed in the Niutishan sill. Quantitative textural analyses show relatively strong plagioclase orientation in the lower sequence of the Pingshan sill, which is attributed to magma flow. The Pingshan sill is interpreted to have been constructed as multiple magma injections from crustal magma chambers based on the crystal size distribution and the varied crystallization pressure (5.1–7.5 kbar) of clinopyroxene crystals.Similar to the far-field radiating Dashigou dyke swarm (c. 925 Ma), the Niutishan sill is enriched in incompatible elements, which may represent the initiation of the Xuhuai rifting. However, the depleted features of the diamond-bearing Pingshan sill and the other coeval doleritic sills (916–890 Ma) were probably related to the subsequent process switched from continental rifting to lithospheric rupture in the divergent stage of the Wilson cycle. The occurrence of the intrusive rocks evolving from an early radiating dyke swarm to later sill complexes indicates a time-transgressive change from radial to planar patterns, implying that it was the upwelling asthenospheric plume material, instead of plate boundary processes, governed the initial and early evolution of this intracontinental rift.  相似文献

Basic explosion pipes occur along with basic dikes, sills, and chonoliths within the Vilyui—Markha basic dike belt in the northwestern marginal part of the Vilyui Rift, characterized by widespread basaltic magmatism. The explosion pipes are of interest for exploration geology owing to their specific composition and tectonic setting, similar in many respects to the structural localization of kimberlite bodies in the sedimentary cover of the Siberian Platform. The basic explosion pipes from the Mirny district were referred to as tholeiitic and alkali-basaltic petrochemical rock series. Peculiar potassic and ultrapotassic rocks—potassium olivine basalts and picrobasalts—were identified in the alkali-basaltic series. These rocks were regarded as related to the deepest sources among basalts and were recommended for use as a prospecting guide for primary diamond sources. Our investigations allowed us to interpret the elevated K and Mg contents in basic fragments from some explosion pipes and associated intrusive bodies as a result of low-temperature metasomatic alteration. The explosion breccias and metasomatically altered basic rocks probably mark areas favorable for explosion activity and intrusion of both basic and kimberlitic rocks.  相似文献

Middle Paleozoic magmatism at the eastern Siberian platform was related to riftogenic processes, which were most clearly expressed in the Vilyui Rift and led to the formation of rift depressions filled with sedimentary-volcanogenic rocks and extended basaltic dike belts in rift shoulders. Two fields of diamondiferous kimberlites were found along with basaltic dikes in the Vilyui-Markha dike belt surrounding rift in the northwest. Active subalkali basaltic magmatism predated the emplacement of kimberlite bodies, which occasionally (Nyurba pipe) are cut by dikes of potassium alkali basalts. Based on geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic characteristics, deep-seated sources were determined for the intrusive and volcanic basalts of the northwestern shoulder of the Vilyui rift. The REE distribution patterns of the studied rocks normalized to the primitive mantle are close to that of OIB, except for somewhat higher HREE. In the diagrams of indicator ratios of trace and rare-earth elements, the basalts are also plotted in the OIB field, being located between the end member of plume composition (FOZO) and enriched mantle sources. The rocks have positive εSr (+3.5 and +28.6) and εNd (+1.3 and +5.3). In a diagram εNd(T)-εSr(T), two fields with distinct content of radiogenic Sr are distinguished, which can be regarded as derived by mixing of the moderately depleted PREMA-type mantle and a source enriched in radiogenic Sr. Available isotope-geochemical data confirm that OIB type basalts of the region were generated by plume activity. The geodynamic setting of Middle Paleozoic magmatism and rifting in the eastern part of the Siberian platform is considered in light of plume-lithosphere interaction. The sequence of tectonomagmatic events during evolution of the Vilyui rift is consistent with the model of plume-lithosphere interaction or the model of active rifting.  相似文献

Mafic rocks at Lake Nipigon provide a record of rift-related continental basaltic magmatism during the Keweenawan event at 1109 Ma. The mafic rocks consist of an early, volumetrically minor suite of picritic intrusions varying in composition from olivine gabbro to peridotite and a later suite of tholeiitic diabase dikes, sheets and sills. The diabase occurs primarily as two 150 to 200 m thick sills with a textural stratigraphy indicating that the sills represent single cooling units. Compositional variation in the sills indicates that they crystallized from several magma pulses. The diabases are similar in chemistry to olivine tholeiite flood basalts of the adjacent Keweenawan rift, particularly with respect to low TiO2, K2O and P2O5. The picrites have higher TiO2, K2O and P2O5 than the diabases and are similar to, but more primitive than, high Fe-Ti basalts which erupted early in the Keweenawan volcanic sequence. All of the rocks crystallized from fractionated liquids. The picrites are cumulate rocks derived at shallow crustal depths from a magma controlled predominantly by olivine fractionation. Picritic chills are in equilibrium with olivine phenocrysts of composition Fo80 and are interpreted to represent the least evolved liquids observed. The parental magma of the picrites was probably Fe rich relative to the parental magma of the diabase. The diabase sills crystallized from an evolved basaltic liquid controlled by cotectic crystallization of plagioclase and lesser olivine and pyroxene. The emplacement of dense olivine phyric picritic magmas early in the sequence, followed by later voluminous compositionally evolved magmas of lower density suggests the development of a crustal density filter effect as the igneous event reached a peak. Delamination of the crust-mantle interface may have resulted in the transition from olivine controlled primitive magma to fractionated magma through the development of crustal underplating.  相似文献

Accurate reconstruction of the paleo-Mojave River and pluvial lake (Harper, Manix, Cronese, and Mojave) system of southern California is critical to understanding paleoclimate and the North American polar jet stream position over the last 500 ka. Previous studies inferred a polar jet stream south of 35°N at 18 ka and at ~ 40°N at 17–14 ka. Highstand sediments of Harper Lake, the upstream-most pluvial lake along the Mojave River, have yielded uncalibrated radiocarbon ages ranging from 24,000 to > 30,000 14C yr BP. Based on geologic mapping, radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating, we infer a ~ 45–40 ka age for the Harper Lake highstand sediments. Combining the Harper Lake highstand with other Great Basin pluvial lake/spring and marine climate records, we infer that the North American polar jet stream was south of 35°N about 45–40 ka, but shifted to 40°N by ~ 35 ka. Ostracodes (Limnocythere ceriotuberosa) from Harper Lake highstand sediments are consistent with an alkaline lake environment that received seasonal inflow from the Mojave River, thus confirming the lake was fed by the Mojave River. The ~ 45–40 ka highstand at Harper Lake coincides with a shallowing interval at downstream Lake Manix.  相似文献
