Kistufell: Primitive Melt from the Iceland Mantle Plume   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:5
This paper presents new geochemical data from Kistufell (64°48'N,17°13'W), a monogenetic table mountain situated directlyabove the inferred locus of the Iceland mantle plume. Kistufellis composed of the most primitive olivine tholeiitic glassesfound in central Iceland (MgO 10·56 wt %, olivine Fo89·7).The glasses are interpreted as near-primary, high-degree plumemelts derived from a heterogeneous mantle source. Mineral, glassand bulk-rock (glass + minerals) chemistry indicates a low averagemelting pressure (15 kbar), high initial crystallization pressuresand temperatures (10–15 kbar and 1270°C), and eruptiontemperatures (1240°C) that are among the highest observedin Iceland. The glasses have trace element signatures (Lan/Ybn<1, Ban/Zrn 0·55–0·58) indicative ofa trace element depleted source, and the Sr–Nd–Pbisotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr 0·70304–0·70308,143Nd/144Nd 0·513058–0·513099, 206Pb/204Pb18·343–18·361) further suggest a long-termtrace element depletion relative to primordial mantle. HighHe isotopic ratios (15·3–16·8 R/Ra) combinedwith low 207Pb/204Pb (15·42–15·43) suggestthat the mantle source of the magma is different from that ofNorth Atlantic mid-ocean ridge basalt. Negative Pb anomalies, and positive Nb and Ta anomalies indicate that the source includesa recycled, subducted oceanic crustal or mantle component. PositiveSr anomalies (Srn/Ndn = 1·39–1·50) furthersuggest that this recycled source component involves lower oceaniccrustal gabbros. The  相似文献

Ultramafic (lherzolites, metasomatized peridotites, harzburgites, websterites and clinopyroxenites) and mafic igneous (basalts, dolerites, diorites and gabbros) rocks exposed at the sea-flooralong the West Iberia continental margin represent a rare opportunityto study the transition zone between continental and oceaniclithosphere. The igneous rocks are enriched in LREE, unlikeNorth Atlantic MORB. A correlation between their 143Nd/144Ndisotopic composition and Ce/Yb ratio suggests that they originatefrom mixing between partial melts of a depleted mantle sourcesimilar to DMM and of an enriched mantle source which may residewithin the continental lithosphere. Clinopyroxenes and amphibolesin the ultramafic rocks are LREE depleted and have flat HREEpatterns with concentrations higher than those of abyssal peridotites.Clinopyroxenes in the harzburgites are less LREE depleted buthave lower HREE concentrations. The clinopyroxenes in the GaliciaBank (GB) lherzolites have radiogenic Nd (143Nd/144Nd rangingfrom 0·512937 to 0·513402) and unradiogenic Sr(87Sr/86Sr ranging from 0·702100 to 0·702311)isotopic ratios similar to, or higher than, DMM (Depleted MORBMantle) whereas the clinopyroxenes in the Iberia Abyssal Plainwebsterites have low-Nd isotopic compositions (143Nd/144Nd rangingfrom 0·512283 to 0·512553) with high-Sr isotopicratios (87Sr/86Sr ranging from 0·704170 to 0·705919).Amphiboles in Galicia Bank lherzolites and diorites have Nd–Srisotopic compositions (143Nd/144Nd from 0·512804 to 0·512938and 87Sr/86Sr from 0·703243 to 0·703887) intermediatebetween those of the clinopyroxenes from the Galicia Bank andthe Iberia Abyssal Plain, but similar to the clinopyroxenesin the 5100 Hill harzburgite (143Nd/144Nd = 0·512865and 87Sr/86Sr = 0·703591) and to the igneous rocks (143Nd/144Ndranging from 0·512729 to 0·513121 and 87Sr/86Srranging from 0·702255 to 0·705109). The majorand trace element compositions of cpx in the Galicia Bank spinellherzolites provide evidence for large-scale refertilizationof the lithospheric upper mantle by MORB-like tholeiitic melts. The associated harzburgites did not undergo partial meltingduring the rifting stage, but, in earlier times, probably during,or even before, the Hercynian orogeny. Iberia Abyssal Plainwebsterites are interpreted as high-pressure cumulates formedin the mantle. Their high Sm/Nd ratios (from 0·43 to0·67) coupled with very low-Nd isotopic compositionsare best explained by a two-stage history: formation of thecumulates from the percolation of enriched melts long beforethe rifting, followed by low-degree partial melting of the pyroxenites, accounting for their LREE depletion. This last event probablyoccurs during the rifting episode, 122 Myr ago. The isotopicheterogeneities observed in the ultramafic rocks of the Iberiamargin were already present at the time of the rifting event. They reflect a long and complex history of depletion and enrichmentevents in an old part of the mantle, and provide strong argumentsfor a sub-continental origin of this part of the upper mantle. Within the Zitácuaro–Valle de Bravo (ZVB) regionof the central Mexican Volcanic Belt (MVB), three lava serieshave erupted during the Quaternary: (1) high-K2O basaltic andesitesand andesites; (2) medium-K2O basaltic andesites, andesitesand dacites; (3) high-TiO2 basalts and basaltic andesites. Thedominant feature of the first two groups is the lack of plagioclaseaccompanying the various ferromagnesian phenocrysts (olivine, orthopyroxene, augite, and hornblende) in all but the dacites. This absence of plagioclase in the phenocryst assemblages ofthe high-K2O and medium-K2O intermediate lavas is significantbecause it indicates high water contents during the stage ofphenocryst equilibration. In contrast, the high-TiO2 group ischaracterized by phenocrysts of plagioclase and olivine. Thespatial distribution of these three lava series is systematic. The southern section of the ZVB transect, 280–330 km fromthe Middle America Trench (MAT), is characterized by high-K2Omelts that are relatively enriched in fluid-mobile elementsand have the highest 87Sr/86Sr ratios. Medium-K2O basaltic andesiteand andesite lavas are present throughout the transect, butthose closest to the MAT are MgO-rich (3·5–9·4wt %) and have phenocryst assemblages indicative of high magmaticwater contents (3·5–6·5 wt % water) andrelatively low temperatures (950–1000°C). In markedcontrast, the northern section of the ZVB transect (380–480km from the MAT) has high-TiO2, high field strength element(HFSE)-enriched magmas that have comparatively dry (< 1·5wt % magmatic water) and hot (1100–1200°C) phenocrystequilibration conditions. The central section of the ZVB transect(330–380 km from the MAT) is a transition zone and producesmoderately light rare earth element (LREE) and large ion lithophileelement (LILE)-enriched, medium-K2O lavas with phenocryst assemblagesindicative of intermediate (1·5–3·5 wt %)water contents and temperatures. The high-K2O series compositionsare the most enriched in LILE and LREE, with a narrow rangeof radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr from 0·704245 to 0·704507,143Nd/144Nd values ranging from 0·512857 to 0·512927(Nd = 4·27–5·63), and 208Pb/204Pb valuesfrom 38·248 to 38·442, 207Pb/204Pb values from15·563 to 15·585, and 206Pb/204Pb values from18·598 to 18·688. The medium-K2O series compositionsare only moderately enriched in the LILE and LREE, with a broaderrange of 87Sr/86Sr, but similar 143Nd/144Nd and 208Pb/204Pbvalues to those of the high-K2O series. In contrast, the high-TiO2series compositions have little enrichment in LILE or LREE andinstead are enriched in the HFSE and heavy rare earth elements(HREE). The high-TiO2 lavas are isotopically distinct in theirlower and narrower range of 143Nd/144Nd. The isotopic variationsare believed to reflect the upper mantle magma source regionsas the low content of phenocrysts in most lavas precludes significantupper crustal assimilation or magma mixing, other than thatrepresented by the presence of quartz xenocrysts (< 2 vol.%) with rhyolitic glass inclusions, which are found in manyof these lavas. The systematic spatial variation in compositionof the three lava series is a reflection of the underlying subduction-modifiedmantle and its evolution. Over the last several hundred years, Stromboli has been characterizedby steady-state Strombolian activity. The volcanic productsare dominated by degassed and highly porphyritic (HP-magma)black scoria bombs, lapilli and lava flows of basaltic shoshoniticcomposition. Periodically (about one to three events per year),more energetic explosive eruptions also eject light colouredvolatile-rich pumices with low phenocryst content (LP-magma)that have more mafic compositions than the HP-magma. An in situmajor and trace element and Sr isotope microanalysis study ispresented on four samples chosen to characterize the differentmodes of activity at Stromboli: a lava flow (1985–1986effusive event), a scoria bomb from the ‘normal’present-day activity of Stromboli (April 1984), and a scoriaand coeval pumice sample from a recent more explosive eruption(September 1996). Plagioclase (An62–90) and clinopyroxene(Mg-number between 0·69 and 0·91) phenocrystsin all samples record marked major element variations. Largeand comparable Sr isotope variations have been detected in plagioclaseand clinopyroxene. HP-magma crystals have resorbed cores, witheither high 87Sr/86Sr (0·70635–0·70630)or low 87Sr/86Sr (0·70614–0·70608); thelatter values are similar to the values of the outer cores.Mineral rims and glassy groundmasses generally have intermediate87Sr/86Sr (0·70628–0·70613). Similarly, mineral growth zones with three groups of 87Sr/86Sr values characterizeminerals from the LP-pumice, with the lowest values presentin mineral rims and groundmass glass. These results define amixing process between HP- and LP-magmas, plus crystallizationof clinopyroxene, plagioclase and olivine, occurring in a shallowmagma reservoir that feeds the present-day magmatic activityof Stromboli. An important observation is the presence of athird component (high 87Sr/86Sr in mineral cores) consideredto represent a pre-AD 1900 cumulus crystal mush reservoir situatedjust below the shallow magma chamber. These cumulus phases areincorporated by the LP-magma arriving from depth and transportedinto the shallow reservoir. A rapid decrease of 87Sr/86Sr inthe replenishing LP-magma immediately prior to eruption of theAD 1985 lava flow is associated with an increased volume ofLP-magma in the shallow magma chamber. The HP-magma in the shallowreservoir is not fully degassed when it interacts with the LP-magma,making efficient mixing possible that ultimately produces awell overturned homogeneous magma. Further degassing and crystallizationoccur at shallower levels as the HP-magma moves through a conduitto the surface. The processes operating in the development of chemical zonationin silicic magma chambers have been addressed with a Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–Thisotope study of the chemically zoned trachyte pumice depositof the Fogo A eruption, Fogo volcano, Azores. Sr isotopic variationis observed in whole rocks, glass separates and sanidine phenocrysts(whole-rock 87Sr/86Sr: 0·7049–0·7061; glass87Sr/86Sr: 0·7048–0·7052; sanidine 87Sr/86Sr:0·7048–0·7062). Thorium isotopic variationis observed in glass separates, with (230Th/232Th)o rangingfrom 0·8737 to 0·8841, and exhibiting a negativecorrelation with Sr isotopes. The Nd, Pb and Hf isotopic compositionsof the whole-rock trachytic pumices are invariant and indistinguishablefrom basalts flanking the volcano. The Sr isotope variationsin the whole rocks are proposed to be the result of three distinctprocesses: contamination of the Fogo A magma by assimilationof radiogenic seawater-altered syenite wall rock, to explainthe Sr and Th isotopic compositions of the glass separates;incorporation of xenocrysts into the trachytic magma, requiredto explain the range in feldspar Sr isotopic compositions; andpost-eruptive surface alteration. This study emphasizes theimportance of determining the isotopic composition of glassand mineral separates rather than whole rocks when pre-eruptivemagmatic processes are being investigated. Initial Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data from carbonatites and associatedintrusive silica-undersaturated rocks from the early Jurassic,Chilwa Island complex, located in southern Malawi, central Africa, suggest melt derivation from a Rb/Sr- and Nd/Sm-depleted butTh/Pb- and U/Pb-enriched mantle source. Initial 143Nd/144Nd(0.51265–0.51270) isotope ratios from the Chilwa Islandcarbonatites are relatively constant, but their initial 87Sr/86Sr(0.70319–0.70361) ratios are variable. The 18Osmow (9.53–14.15%0)and 13CPDB (–3.27 to –1.50%0) isotope ratios ofthe carbonates are enriched relative to the range of mantlevalues, and there is a negative correlation between 18O andSr isotope ratios. The variations in Sr, C, and O isotopic ratiosfrom the carbonatites suggest secondary processes, such as interactionwith meteoric groundwater during late-stage carbonatite activity. The initial 143Nd/144Nd (0.51246 0.51269) and initial 87Sr/86Sr(0.70344–0.70383) isotope ratios from the intrusive silicaterocks are more variable, and the Sr more radiogenic than thosefrom the carbonatites. Most of the Pb isotope data from Chilwa Island plot to the rightof the geochron and close to the oceanic regression line definedby MORBs and OIBs. Initial Pb isotopic ratios from both carbonatites(207Pb/204Pb 15.63–15.71; 206Pb/204Pb 19.13–19.78)and silicate rocks (207Pb/204Pb 15.61–15.72; 206Pb/204Pb18.18–20.12) show pronounced variations, and form twogroups in Pb-Pb plots. The isotopic variations shown by Nd, Pb, and Sr for the ChilwaIsland carbonatites and intrusive silicates suggest that thesemelts underwent different evolutionary histories. The chemicaldata, including isotopic ratios, from the carbonatites and olivinenephelinites are consistent with magmatic differentiation ofa carbonated-nephelinite magma. A model is proposed in whichdifferentiation of the carbonatite magma was accompanied byfenitization (metasomatic alteration) of the country rocks bycarbonatite-derived fluids, and subsequent alteration of thecarbonatite by hydrothermal activity. The chemical and isotopicdata from the non-nephelinitic intrusive silicate rocks reveala more complex evolutionary history, involving either selectivebinary mixing of lower-crustal granulites and a nephelinitemagma, or incremental batch melting of a depleted source andsubsequent crustal contamination.  相似文献

Mantle peridotites of the External Liguride (EL) units (NorthernApennines) represent slices of subcontinental lithospheric mantleemplaced at the surface during early stages of rifting of theJurassic Ligurian Piemontese basin. Petrological, ion probeand isotopic investigations have been used to unravel the natureof their mantle protolith and to constrain the timing and mechanismsof their evolution. EL peridotites are dominantly fertile spinelIherzolites partly recrystallizfd in the plagiodase Iherzplitestability field Clinopyroxenes stable in thespinel-facies assemblagehave nearly fiat REE patterns (CeN/SmN=06–08) at (10–16)C1and high Na, Sr, Ti and Zr contents. Kaersutitic-Ti-pargasiticamphiboles also occur in the spinel-facies assemblage. TheirLREE-depleted REE spectra and very low Sr, Zr and Ba contentsindicate that they crystallized from hydrous fluids with lowconcentrations of incompatible elements. Thermometric estimateson the spinelfacies parageneses yield lithospheric equilibriumtemperatures in the range 1000–1100C, in agreement withthe stability of amphibole, which implies T<1100C. Sr andNd isotopic compositions, determined on carefully handpickedclinopyroxene separates, plot within the depleted end of theMORB field (87Sr/86Sr=070222–070263; 143Nd/144Nd=0513047–0513205)similar to many subcontinental orogenic spinel Iherzolites fromthe western Mediterranean area (e.g. Ivrea Zpne and Lanzfl N).The interpretation of the EL Iherzolites as subcontinental lithosphericmantle is reinforced by the occurrence of one extremely depletedisotopic composition (87Sr/86Sr=0701736; 143Nd/144Nd=0513543).Sr and Nd model ages, calculated assuming both CHUR and DM mantlesources, range between 24 Ga and 780 Ma. In particular, the12-Ga Sr age and the 780-Ma Nd age can be regarded as minimumages of differentiation. The transition from spinel-to plagioclase-faciesassemblage, accompanied by progressive deformation (from granularto tectonite-mylonite textures), indicate that the EL Iherzolitesexperienced a later, subsolidus decompressional evolution, startingfrom subcontinental lithospheric levels. Sm/Nd isochrons onplagioclase-clinopyroxene pairs furnish ages of 165 Ma. Thisearly Jurassic subsolidus decompressional history is consistentwith uplift by means of denudation in response to passive andasymmetric lithospheric extension. This is considered to bethe most suitable geodynamic mechanism to account for the exposureof huge bodies of subcontinental lithospheric mantle duringearly stages of opening of an oceanic basin. *Corresponding author. Hawaiian volcanoes, dominantly shields of tholeiitic basalt, form as the Pacific Plate migrates over a hotspot in the mantle. As these shields migrate away from the hotspot, highly alkaliclavas, forming the rejuvenated stage of volcanism, may eruptafter an interval of erosion lasting for 0·25–2·5Myr. Alkalic lavas with geochemical characteristics similarto rejuvenated- stage lavas erupted on the sea floor north ofOahu along the Hawaiian Arch. The variable Tb/Yb, Sr/Ce, K/Ce,Rb/La, Ba/La, Ti/Eu and Zr/Sm ratios in lavas forming the NorthArch and the rejuvenated-stage Honolulu Volcanics were controlledduring partial melting by residual garnet, clinopyroxene, Fe–Tioxides and phlogopite. However, the distinctively high Ba/Thand Sr/Nd ratios of lava forming the North Arch and HonoluluVolcanics reflect source characteristics. These characteristicsare also associated with shield tholeiitic basalt; hence theyarise from the Hawaiian hotspot, which is interpreted to bea mantle plume. Inversion of the batch melting equation usingabundances of highly incompatible elements, such as Th and La,requires enriched sources with 10–55% clinopyroxene and5–25% garnet for North Arch lavas. The 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Ndratios in lavas forming the North Arch and Honolulu Volcanicsare consistent with mixing between the Hawaiian plume and adepleted component related to mid-ocean ridge basalts. Specifically, the enrichment of incompatible elements coupled with low 87Sr/86Srand high 143Nd/144Nd relative to bulk Earth ratios is best explainedby derivation from depleted lithosphere recently metasomatizedby incipient melt (<2% melting) from the Hawaiian plume. In this metasomatized source, the incompatible element abundances,as well as Sr and Nd isotopic ratios, are controlled by incipientmelts. In contrast, the large range of published 187Os/188Osdata (0·134–0·176) reflects heterogeneitycaused by various proportions of pyroxenite veins residing ina depleted peridotite matrix. Vico volcano has erupted potassic and ultrapotassic magmas, ranging from silica-saturated to silica-undersaturated types,in three distinct volcanic periods over the past 0·5Myr. During Period I magma compositions changed from latiteto trachyte and rhyolite, with minor phono-tephrite; duringPeriods II and III the erupted magmas were primarly phono-tephriteto tephri-phonolite and phonolite; however, magmatic episodesinvolving leucite-free eruptives with latitic, trachytic andolivine latitic compositions also occurred. In Period II, leucite-bearingmagmas (87Sr/86Srinitial = 0·71037–0·71115)were derived from a primitive tephrite parental magma. Modellingof phonolites with different modal plagioclase and Sr contentsindicates that low-Sr phonolitic lavas differentiated from tephri-phonoliteby fractional crystallization of 7% olivine + 27% clinopyroxene+ 54% plagioclase + 10% Fe–Ti oxides + 4% apatite at lowpressure, whereas high-Sr phonolitic lavas were generated byfractional crystallization at higher pressure. More differentiatedphonolites were generated from the parental magma of the high-Srphonolitic tephra by fractional crystallization of 10–29%clinopyroxene + 12–15% plagioclase + 44–67% sanidine+ 2–4% phlogopite + 1–3% apatite + 7–10% Fe–Tioxides. In contrast, leucite-bearing rocks of Period III (87Sr/86Srinitial= 0·70812–0·70948) were derived from a potassictrachybasalt by assimilation–fractional crystallizationwith 20–40% of solid removed and r = 0·4–0·5(where r is assimilation rate/crystallization rate) at differentpressures. Silica-saturated magmas of Period II (87Sr/86Srinitial= 0·71044–0·71052) appear to have been generatedfrom an olivine latite similar to some of the youngest eruptedproducts. A primitive tephrite, a potassic trachybasalt andan olivine latite are inferred to be the parental magmas atVico. These magmas were generated by partial melting of a veinedlithospheric mantle sources with different vein–peridotite/wall-rockproportions, amount of residual apatite and distinct isolationtimes for the veins.  Petrological and chemical variations, as well as oxygen and strontium isotopic data are presented for metagabbros from the Romanche and Vema fracture zones. These rocks were affected by several types and degrees of alterations ranging from slight hydrothermal alteration to complete amphibolitization. Five major kinds of alteration processes ranging from late-magmatic deuteric alteration (stage I) to low temperature (<150 °C) alteration (stage V) were identified. Water-rock interactions between 300 and 650 °C are the most dominant interactions resulting in the most prevailing secondary mineralogical assemblages which characterize the amphibolite and/or greenschist facies (amphibole ± plagioclase ± epidote ± titanite ± chlorite ± prehnite). Hydrothermal alteration of these gabbroic rocks results in isotopic exchanges between rocks and seawater-derived fluids. These exchanges lead to decrease of gabbroic δ18O toward values as low as +3.9‰, and larger Sr isotopic variations than other oceanic gabbroic rocks (87Sr/86Sr ratios shift to 0.7029–0.7051). Calculation of a chemical budget indicates that metagabbros are hydrated and enriched in Fe and probably in Mg and Cl, while Si, Ca and Ti are released to the hydrothermal fluids. In addition to metamorphic recrystallization and geochemical transformation, hydrothermal alteration of oceanic gabbros contributes to the control of the global ocean geochemistry. New compositional data and petrogenetic models are presentedfor pre-Upper Miocene volcanism in the northern Puna of Argentina(22°S–24°S). Two phases of volcanism producedsmall dome complexes of mainly silicic andesite to low-SiO2rhyolite. The Upper Oligocene–Lower Miocene phase (UOLM,20–17 Ma), produced two distinct groups of rocks. TheUOLM-1 group is metaluminous and mainly andesitic, with isotopiccompositions like those of the recent arc (87Sr/86SrT  相似文献

This paper presents field, geochemical and isotopic (Sr, Nd,Pb) results on basalts from the Antipodes, Campbell and ChathamIslands, New Zealand. New 40Ar/39Ar age determinations alongwith previous K–Ar dates reveal three major episodes ofvolcanic activity on Chatham Island (85–82, 41–35,5 Ma). Chatham and Antipodes samples comprise basanite, alkaliand transitional basalts that have HIMU-like isotopic (206Pb/204Pb>20·3–20·8, 87Sr/86Sr <0·7033,143Nd/144Nd >0·5128) and trace element affinities(Ce/Pb 28–36, Nb/U 34–66, Ba/Nb 4–7). Thegeochemistry of transitional to Q-normative samples from CampbellIsland is explained by interaction with continental crust. Thevolcanism is part of a long-lived (100 Myr), low-volume, diffusealkaline magmatic province that includes deposits on the Northand South Islands of New Zealand as well as portions of WestAntarctica and SE Australia. All of these continental areaswere juxtaposed on the eastern margin of Gondwanaland at >83Ma. A ubiquitous feature of mafic alkaline rocks from this regionis their depletion in K and Pb relative to other highly incompatibleelements when normalized to primitive mantle values. The inversionof trace element data indicates enriched mantle sources thatcontain variable proportions of hydrous minerals. We proposethat the mantle sources represent continental lithosphere thathost amphibole/phlogopite-rich veins formed by plume- and/orsubduction-related metasomatism between 500 and 100 Ma. Thestrong HIMU signature (206Pb/204Pb >20·5) is consideredto be an in-grown feature generated by partial dehydration andloss of hydrophile elements (Pb, Rb, K) relative to more magmaphileelements (Th, U, Sr) during short-term storage at the base ofthe lithosphere. The 1800 Kaupulehu flow on Hualalai Volcano, Hawaii, containsabundant xcnoliths of dunitc, wehrlite, and olivine clinopyroxenitewith minor gabbro, troctolite, anorthosite, and wcbstcrite. The petrography and mineral compositions of 41 dunite, wehrlite, and olivine clinopyroxenite xenoliths have been studied, andclinopyroxene separates from eight of these have been analyzedfor Ba, K, Rb, Sr, rare earth elements, 87Sr/86Sr, and 143Nd/144Nd.Temperatures of equilibration obtained by olivine-spinel andpyroxene geothermometry range from 1000 to 1200 C. Mineralogicaldata combined with published fluid inclusion data indicate depthsof origin in the range of 8–30 km. The rarity of orthopyroxene, the presence of Fe-rich olivine(Fo8189) and clinopyroxene (Fs512), and the occurrenceof high TiO2 in spinel (0.9–2.8 wt.%) and clinopyroxene(035–1.33 wt%) all indicate that the xenoliths are cumulates, not residues from partial fusion. The separated clinopyrox-eneshave 87Sr/86Sr (0-70348.0-70367) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.51293–0.51299)values that are different from Sr and Nd isotope ratios of Pacificabyssal basalts (>0.7032 and >0-5130, respectively). Also, clinopyroxenes and spinels in the xenoliths have generally higherTiO2 contents (>O.35 and >0.91 wt.%, respectively) thantheir counterparts in abyssal cumulates (<0.40 and <0.70wt%,respectively). These differences indicate that the xenolithsare not a normal component of oceanic crust. Because the xenoliths and alkalic to transitional Hualalai lavashave similar values for Cr/(Cr + Al) and Cr/(Cr + Al + Fe3+)of spinels, 87Sr/86Sr of clinopyroxenes, and whole-rock 3He/4He,we conclude that the xenoliths are cumulates from such magmas.Multiple parental magmas for the xenoliths are indicated byslightly heterogeneous 87Sr/86Sr of clinopyroxene separates.Depths of formation of the xenoliths are estimated to be {smalltilde}8–30 km. Extensive crystallization of olivine in the absence of pyroxenesand plagioclase is a characteristic and prominent feature ofHawaiian tholeiitic magmatism. Dunite xenoliths crystallizedfrom alkalic magmas have previously been reported from MaunaKea Volcano (Atwill & Garcia, 1985) and Loihi Seamount (Clague,1988). Our finding of an alkalic signature for dunite xenolithsfrom a third Hawaiian volcano, Hualalai, shows that early olivinecrystallization should be considered a characteristic not justof Hawaiian tholeiitic magmatism but also of Hawaiian alkalicmagmatism.  相似文献

The Baikal Rift is a zone of active lithospheric extension adjacentto the Siberian Craton. The 6–16 Myr old Vitim VolcanicField (VVF) lies approximately 200 km east of the rift axisand consists of 5000 km3 of melanephelinites, basanites, alkaliand tholeiitic basalts, and minor nephelinites. In the volcanicpile, 142 drill core samples were used to study temporal andspatial variations. Variations in major element abundances (e.g.MgO = 3·3–14·6 wt %) reflect polybaric fractionalcrystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase. 87Sr/86Sri(0·7039–0·7049), 143Nd/144Ndi (0·5127–0·5129)and 176Hf/177Hfi (0·2829–0·2830) ratiosare similar to those for ocean island basalts and suggest thatthe magmas have not assimilated significant amounts of continentalcrust. Variable degrees of partial melting appear to be responsiblefor differences in Na2O, P2O5, K2O and incompatible trace elementabundances in the most primitive (high-MgO) magmas. Fractionatedheavy rare earth element (HREE) ratios (e.g. [Gd/Lu]n > 2·5)indicate that the parental magmas of the Vitim lavas were predominantlygenerated within the garnet stability field. Forward major elementand REE inversion models suggest that the tholeiitic and alkalibasalts were generated by decompression melting of a fertileperidotite source within the convecting mantle beneath Vitim.Ba/Sr ratios and negative K anomalies in normalized multi-elementplots suggest that phlogopite was a residual mantle phase duringthe genesis of the nephelinites and basanites. Relatively highlight REE (LREE) abundances in the silica-undersaturated meltsrequire a metasomatically enriched lithospheric mantle source. Results of forward major element modelling suggest that meltingof phlogopite-bearing pyroxenite veins could explain the majorelement composition of these melts. In support of this, pyroxenitexenoliths have been found in the VVF. High Cenozoic mantle potentialtemperatures (1450°C) predicted from geochemical modellingsuggest the presence of a mantle plume beneath the Baikal RiftZone. Numerous minette dykes intersect the Precambrian crystallinebasement of Schirmacher Oasis, East Antarctica. This study presentsnew Sr, Nd, Pb and O isotope data for 11 minette samples fromfour different dykes. The samples are characterized by relativelyhigh 87Sr/86Sr (0·7077–0·7134), 207Pb/204Pb(15·45–15·55) and 208Pb/204Pb (37·8–39·8),combined with low 143Nd/144Nd (  相似文献

Mildly peralkaline rhyolites of the Olkaria Volcanic Complex, located in the Kenyan sector of the East African rift valley, have low Sr concentrations and elevated Rb/Sr ratios (Sr 1·3–2ppm; 87Rb/86Sr = 748–1769) that potentially allow theresolution of time differences on the order of 1 ka by conventionalSr isotope determination. Because of their young eruption ages(  相似文献

We present a combined Sr, Nd, Pb and Os isotope study of lavasand associated genetically related megacrysts from the Biu andJos Plateaux, northern Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL). Comparisonof lavas and megacrysts allows us to distinguish between twocontamination paths of the primary magmas. The first is characterizedby both increasing 206Pb/204Pb (19·82–20·33)and 87Sr/86Sr (0·70290–0·70310), and decreasingNd (7·0–6·0), and involves addition of anenriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle-derived melt. Thesecond contamination path is characterized by decreasing 206Pb/204Pb(19·82–19·03), but also increasing 87Sr/86Sr(0·70290–0·70359), increasing 187Os/188Os(0·130–0·245) and decreasing Nd (7·0–4·6),and involves addition of up to 8% bulk continental crust. Isotopicsystematics of some lavas from the oceanic sector of the CVLalso imply the involvement of a continental crustal component.Assuming that the line as a whole shares a common source, wepropose that the continental signature seen in the oceanic sectorof the CVL is caused by shallow contamination, either by continent-derivedsediments or by rafted crustal blocks that became trapped inthe oceanic lithosphere during continental breakup in the Mesozoic. The Miocene–Quaternary Jemez Mountains volcanic field(JMVF), the site of the Valles caldera, lies at the intersectionof the Jemez lineament, a Proterozoic suture, and the CenozoicRio Grande rift. Parental magmas are of two types: K-depletedsilica-undersaturated, derived from the partial melting of lithosphericmantle with residual amphibole, and tholeiitic, derived fromeither asthenospheric or lithospheric mantle. Variability insilica-undersaturated basalts reflects contributions of meltsderived from lherzolitic and pyroxenitic mantle, representingheterogeneous lithosphere associated with the suture. The Kdepletion is inherited by fractionated, crustally contaminatedderivatives (hawaiites and mugearites), leading to distinctiveincompatible trace element signatures, with Th/(Nb,Ta) and La/(Nb,Ta)greater than, but K/(Nb,Ta) similar to, Bulk Silicate Earth. These compositions dominate the mafic and intermediate lavas, and the JMVF is therefore derived largely, and perhaps entirely, from melting of fertile continental Jemez lineament lithosphereduring rift-related extension. Significant variations in Pband Nd isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb = 17·20–18·93;143Nd/144Nd = 0·51244–0·51272) result fromcrustal contamination, whereas 87Sr/86Sr is low and relativelyuniform (0·7040–0·7048). We compare theeffects of contamination by low-87Sr/86Sr crust with assimilationof high-87Sr/86Sr granitoid by partial melting, with Sr retainedin a feldspathic residue. Both models satisfactorily reproducethe isotopic features of the rocks, but the lack of a measurableEu anomaly in most JMVF mafic lavas is difficult to reconcilewith a major role for residual plagioclase during petrogenesis. Whole rock Rb–Sr measurements were made on associatedbasic and acid intrusives and extrusives from the northern andsouthern ends of the Lebombo monocline with a view to determineif the acid rocks came from the mantle or from the crust. Inthe south, in Swaziland (now called Ngwame) and Zululand, rhyolitesand granophyres (age 202 14 m.y.) have an initial Si87–Sr86ratio of 0.7042 0.0005; in the north, in the Nuanetsi syncline, rhyolites (age 206 13 m.y.) and granites from ring complexes(age 177 7 m.y.) have initial ratios of 0.7081 0.0008 and0.7085 0.0007, respectively. The initial ratios of the basicrocks, basalts and gabbros, vary in both areas and have a rangefrom 0.7042 to 0.7125 which can be explained by crustal contamination. The low initial ratios and isotopic homogeneity of the acidmagmas over long distances (160 km) in Swaziland and Zululandare interpreted as implying that they were derived from themantle.  相似文献
