We use the crystallographic orientations of quartz crystals, as determined with EBSD, to provide new evidence for the formation of clustered quartz crystals during magma crystallization. Vinalhaven is dominated by granite, with minor porphyry that formed when granite remelted during input of coeval basalt. CL zoning suggests that most quartz clusters in granite and porphyry formed by synneusis, the “swimming together” of preformed crystals. In granite, most quartz pairs in clusters have random orientations—only about 10% have parallel or Esterel twin orientations. Porphyry has fewer quartz clusters, and all pairs have approximately parallel or Esterel twin orientations. CL zoning of quartz pairs in porphyry indicates that they attached prior to a major remelting event. Interpretation of the Vinalhaven quartz clusters leads us to propose that oriented synneusis occurs during crystal accumulation on a magma chamber floor. During hindered settling, some quartz crystals should have come into contact along their dipyramidal faces. Once in contact, continued settling and loss of interstitial melt may have rotated some quartz crystals such that lattices on their dipyramidal faces matched—producing parallel and Esterel twin orientations and creating strong bonds between pairs. Only a small proportion of pairs with matched dipyramidal faces formed in the granite and, during rejuvenation to produce porphyry, only these oriented pairs survived. Hence, the presence of oriented synneusis in a plutonic rock may demonstrate a history of crystal accumulation.  相似文献

The formation of crystal clusters by synneusis (magmatic sintering) affects a wide range of magmatic systems from olivine clusters in komatiite to quartz clusters in high-silica granite. A common feature of synneusis in any mineral phase is the alignment of neighbouring crystals in certain lower-energy orientation relationships. However, the underlying mechanisms involved with both the alignment of crystals in lower-energy orientations and the binding of crystal clusters are not well understood. In the absence of mechanisms that bind crystals together upon contact, the same hydrodynamic forces that may bring crystals together can in theory also serve to disaggregate clusters. Here I use cathodoluminescence imaging and crystal orientation data from quartz clusters in high-silica granite to show that i) rapid crystalline neck growth along attachment surfaces and ii) grain rotation are two mechanisms that reduce the grain boundary energy of crystal clusters while increasing clusters’ shear strength. The continued crystallization of sintered phases as the magmatic body cools further cements crystal pairs and resists cluster disaggregation. Together these mechanisms underpin both the formation and preservation of large crystal clusters in dynamic magmatic environments.  相似文献

The structure function for phase fluctuations on spatial scales from 106 to 1017 m is constructed using data on diffractive and refractive scintillation of pulsars, scattering angles, variations in pulse arrival times, and differences in dispersion measures observed for close pairs of pulsars in globular clusters. For distances R>1 kpc (a sample of pulsars with DM≥30 pc/cm3), the fluctuations in the interstellar electron density on scales from 106 to 1014 m are well described by a Kolmogorov spectrum with index 11/3. Analysis of variations in the dispersion measures for close pairs of pulsars in globular clusters indicates an outer turbulence scale of L 0=1015 m. The relative level of turbulent fluctuations is determined for the interstellar plasma, and the important role of turbulence in the energy balance is demonstrated.  相似文献

Quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory, have been used to study the distribution of iron impurities in sphalerite (ZnS) at compositions ranging from 3.125 to 12.5 mol% FeS. Our results show that iron is most easily incorporated by direct substitution onto the zinc site and that energies for solution reactions involving FeS are exothermic when the system is zinc deficient. Furthermore, there appears to be a small driving force for the formation of bound Fe-Fe pairs at low iron concentrations, though there is no particular preference found for larger clusters of iron. The influence of iron on the sphalerite cell parameter is shown to be sensitive to the presence of Fe-Fe pairs and to the degree of sample non-stoichiometry.  相似文献

An inverse Monte Carlo (MC) method was developed to determine the distribution of octahedral cations (Al3+, Fe3+, and Mg2+) in bentonite illite–smectite (I–S) samples (dioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicates) using FT–IR and 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopies. FT–IR allows determination of the nature and proportion of different cation pairs bound to OH groups measuring the intensities of OH-bending bands. 27Al MAS NMR data provide information about cation configuration because 27Al MAS NMR intensity depends on Fe distribution. MC calculations based on FT–IR data alone show Fe segregation by short-range ordering (Fe clusters within 9 to 15?Å from a given Fe atom). Fe segregation increases with illite proportion. MC calculations based on IR and 27Al NMR simultaneously yield similar configurations in which Fe clusters are smaller. The latter calculations fail to build appropriate cation distributions for those samples with higher number of illite layers and significant Fe content, which is indicative of long-range Fe ordering that cannot be detected by FT–IR and 27Al MAS NMR. The proportion of Mg–Mg pairs is negligible in all samples, and calculations, in which the number of Mg atoms, as second neighbours, is minimised, create appropriate configurations.  相似文献

A new catalog of 8382 close quasar-galaxy pairs is presented. The catalog was composed using published catalogs of quasars and active galactic nuclei containing 11358 objects, as well as the LEDA catalog of galaxies, which contains on the order of 100 thousand objects. Based on these new data, the dependence of the number of pairs on a=z G /z Q is analyzed, where z G and z Q are the redshifts of the galaxy and quasar, respectively, revealing an excess of pairs with a<0.1 and a>0.9. This means that the galaxies in pairs are preferably located close to either the observer or the quasar and avoid intermediate distances along the line of sight to the quasar. Computer simulations demonstrate that it is not possible to explain this number of pairs with the observed distribution in a as the result of chance positional coincidences with a uniform spatial distribution of galaxies. Data on globular clusters show that the excess of pairs with a<0.1 and a>0.9 is consistent with the hypothesis that we are observing distant compact objects that are strongly gravitationally lensed by transparent lenses with a King mass distribution located in the halos of nearby galaxies. The Hubble diagram for galaxies and quasars is presented. Observational tests of the mesolensing hypothesis are formulated.  相似文献

“Earthquake chains” are clusters of moderate-size earthquakes which extend over large distances and are formed by statistically rare pairs of events that are close in space and time (“neighbors”). Earthquake chains are supposed to be precursors of large earthquakes with lead times of a few months. Here we substantiate this hypothesis by mass testing it using a random earthquake catalog. Also, we study stability under variation of parameters and some properties of the chains. We found two invariant parameters: they characterize the spatial and energy scales of earthquake correlation. Both parameters of the chains show good correlation with the magnitudes of the earthquakes they precede. Earthquake chains are known as the first stage of the earthquake prediction algorithm reverse tracing of precursors (RTP) now tested in forward prediction. A discussion of the complete RTP algorithm is outside the scope of this paper, but the results presented here are important to substantiate the RTP approach.  相似文献

Misorientation analysis quantifies microstructural features in tectonites, metamorphic and igneous rocks, and allows hypotheses on their formation to be tested. The misorientation between two lattices can be expressed by a rotation axis and rotation angle. For lattices with symmetry, it is conventional to take the minimum angle that enables one lattice to be rotated into the other. For a group of lattice measurements two types of misorientation distribution can be calculated. Selecting random pairs of grains gives the random-pair misorientation distribution. Selecting neighbouring pairs gives the neighbour-pair misorientation distribution. The forms of both distributions are visualised using histograms or cumulative frequency diagrams. They are strongly influenced by any overall crystallographic preferred orientation and by intrinsic crystal symmetry. In many rocks, the random-pair misorientation distribution and neighbour-pair misorientation distribution are statistically significantly different (quantified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test). Differences between the random-pair misorientation distribution and neighbour-pair misorientation distribution imply that adjacent grains have physically interacted or are inherited from a precursor microstructure. Interactions include (1) reduction in surface energy by lattice alignment. We show this may have occurred in garnet clusters in schist, and olivine in a cumulate. It is well-known in metals and may be a common geological process. (2) Nucleation, where those nuclei have influenced the orientation of adjacent nuclei. (3) Mechanical rotations of facetted grains in compacting crystal mushes, so that faces become parallel. (4) Growth twinning. Inheritance includes (1) subgrain rotation recrystallisation in tectonites deforming by crystal plastic processes. (2) Mechanical and transformation-related twinning. (3) Domainal microstructures, e.g. where grains have formed from a few large original grains, may give rise to spurious correlations when the orientation data cover more than one domain. With this proviso, misorientation analysis can be used to investigate many important microstructural processes.  相似文献

Bangalore and Hyderabad are two important examples of Indian clusters. We present the results of study the 2D distribution of galaxies in 254 rich open galaxy clusters. The clusters have no concentration to the center, so all kinds of substructures are clearly seen. Regular linear substructures in galaxy clusters were described in Rood & Sastry scheme of morphological types according to positions of 10 brightest galaxies. Another types of regular substructures were missed. Our study fills the lacuna. We have found about 25% of clusters in our data set having four kinds of regular substructures, beyond founded before linear ones. New kinds of regular substructures are: crossing and divaricating filaments or X and Y-type peculiarities, as well as curved strips and short dense chains. We suppose the distribution of dark matter in founded galaxy clusters with substructures have corresponded regular peculiarities. Hot gas distribution in these clusters must be observed distorted X-ray halo. We suppose also the clusters will evolve in the different ways.  相似文献

Results of a study of the kinematic and chemical properties of globular clusters of the Milky Way based on data from the Gaia DR2 catalog and meaurements with the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. A new method for dividing globular clusters into Galatic subsystems based on the elements of their Galactic orbits is proposed. Samples of globular clusters belonging to the bar/bulge, thick disk, and halo of the Milky Way are obtained. The mean metallicities of the globular clusters in various subsystems are calculated. The mean metallicities of globular clusters of the thick disk and halo display statistically significant differences. At the same time, no statistically significant differences are present between the mean metallicities of halo globular clusters moving in the direction of rotation of the Galactic disk and those moving in the retrograde direction. This argues against the suggestion that retrograde and prograde globular clusters have different origins.

This paper introduces a unique industrial configuration that has emerged in Beijing, where three economic clusters in the biomedical industry, originally established as industrial/research parks, have developed parallel to each other. This configuration of multiple co-located clusters of the same industry, which has not been discussed before, raises the question of whether the industrial/research parks are competing for the same resources, or whether they are complementary to each other and can collectively be viewed as a new type of industrial configuration. The paper conceptualizes a framework of multiple clusters in mega-city regions that distinguishes between collaborating and competing clusters and presents initial empirical evidence for the Beijing case. As such, this research aims to unravel the phenomenon of multiple clusters in mega-city regions and to understand the complex spatial interrelationships that exist within and beyond multiple co-located clusters in the same industry.  相似文献

A catalog of Galactic globular clusters has been compiled and used to analyze relations between the chemical and kinematic parameters of the clusters. The catalog contains positions, distances, luminosities, metallicites, and horizontal-branch morphology indices for 157 globular clusters, as well as space velocities for 72 globular clusters. For 69 globular clusters, these data are suppleented with the relative abundances of 28 chemical elements produced in various nuclear-synthesis processes, taken from 101 papers published between 1986 and 2018. The tendency for redder horizontal branches in lowmetallicity accreted globular clusters is discussed. The discrepancy between the criteria for cluster membership in the thick-disk and halo subsystems based on chemical and kinematic properties is considered. This is manifest through the fact that all metal-rich ([Fe/H] > ?1.0) clusters are located close to the center and plane of the Galaxy, regardless of their kinematic membership in particular Galaxy subsystems. An exception is three accreted clusters lost by a dwarf galaxy in Sagittarius. At the same time, the fraction of more distant clusters is high among metal-poorer clusters in any kinematically selected Galactic subsystem. In addition, all metal-rich clusters whose origins are related to the same protogalactic cloud are located in the [Fe/H]–[α/Fe] diagram considerably higher than the strip populated with field stars. All metal-poor clusters (most of them accreted) populate the entire width of the strip formed by high-velocity (i.e., presumably accreted) field stars. Stars of dwarf satellite galaxies (all of them being metal-poor) are located in this diagram much lower than accreted field stars. These facts suggest that all stellar objects in the accreted halo are remnants of galaxies with higher masses than those in the current environment of the Galaxy. Differences in the relative abundances of α-process elements among stellar objects of the Galaxy and surrounding dwarf satellite galaxies confirmthat the latter have left no appreciable stellar traces in the Galaxy, with the possible exception of the low-metallicity cluster Rup 106, which has low relative abundances of α-process elements.

This paper is an effort to address some of the main considerations pertaining to foreign firm activity in clusters and the use of Porter’s clusters in geographic research. Three methodological questions related to the behavior of firms in and outside of Porter’s clusters are explored based on results generated from a survey of Korean subsidiaries in the US. Results indicate that firms within and outside of clusters do exhibit differences vis-à-vis their levels of autonomy from their HQ firms. No differences were found across firms located outside of clusters. Subsidiaries in clusters report much lower levels of autonomy in planning and inventory control, and higher levels of autonomy for information sharing and cost control. The hiring practices of subsidiaries in the US suggest that Korean firms are concentrating on hiring qualified managers from US competitors and US firms with which they had a previous relationship. In stark contrast to hiring practices in Korea, subsidiaries are not hiring significant numbers of managers with advanced degrees from universities or from the government.  相似文献

The kinematics of stars in open-cluster models are investigated. The central regions of these model clusters are fairly “cool, ” leading to gravitational instability in the cluster cores. A temporary virilization is observed in the model clusters, during which an appreciable fraction of the fluctuation energy of the cluster is temporarily transformed into the kinetic energy of the peculiar motions of stars. The duration of this stage can reach ∼108 yr. The origins of this temporary virialization of the model clusters are discussed. The instability of the intrinsic fluctuations of the phase density in the centers of six clusters and model clusters is investigated. Several new regions of unstable phase-density fluctuations are found, in addition to those already known. The observed and model clusters can move toward a stable equilibrium state when the density of the cluster core both decreases and increases. The structure of regions of instability of the phase-density fluctuations in the centers of the six clusters is studied. Resonance curves for the amplitudes of steady-state phase-density fluctuations in the center of NGC 6705 are constructed. Analysis of the structure of the regions of instability indicates an appreciable rate of fluctuation-energy loss due to relaxation effects. The instability increments and widths of regions of instability fall off with increasing distance of the cluster from the Galactic center. An important role in the formation of regions of instability may be played by resonances between the frequency of the orbital motion of the cluster in the Galaxy and the frequencies of intrinsic phase-density fluctuations in the centers of the clusters considered.  相似文献

Bioremediation is widely used to improve ground soil by introducing calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Shear wave velocity (Vs) is usually adopted to evaluate effect but the microscopic mechanism is unclear. The discrete element method (DEM), a promising tool for simulating the behaviors of cohesive and noncohesive materials, was used in this study to simulate Vs evolution and wave propagation path of sand reinforced by calcite precipitates. Two basic calcite precipitate forms are proposed for representing individual calcite precipitation (CaCO3-P) and calcite aggregation (CaCO3-C). Contact cementation between adjacent sand grain pairs was the primary association pattern for calcite precipitates at a low calcite content. At a higher calcite content, the preferential shear wave propagation pathway is the clusters cemented by CaCO3-C. With calcite content increasing from 0 to 9%, the coordination number and average contact force increased. Vs increased from 169.73 to 2132.64 m/s but had high variability due to the spatial distribution. The results suggest that the calibrated DEM model can elucidate the microscopic mechanisms and evaluate the enhancement effect of microorganism-reinforced soil.

The influence of structural defects on the polymorphic transformations in quartz was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance and electron microscopy. It was established that the kinetics of the accumulation of the clusters of the β-phase depends on isomorphic impurities in quartz. It was confirmed that germanium ions and vacancies in quartz participate in the formation of the clusters. Obtained results allow the assumption that the amount of germanium required to preserve clusters increases with increasing temperature and vice versa. An explanation is presented for experimentally observed decomposition of clusters during artificial heating of some quartz samples. It was found that the clusters of the β-phase are autonomous units, i.e. may exist independently of host crystalline structure of quartz. The possible mechanism of influence of Ge impurity on the temperature of α-β-transition in quarts is discussed.  相似文献

Cluster analysis groups samples, but does not generally show gradations between clusters. To illustrate these relationships, principal-coordinate analysis and multidimensional scaling can be employed, but these methods may not be appropriate due to structural distortion. A minimum spanning tree (MST) computes a point-to-point path through the original matrix, and clusters are mapped on the MST diagram. The MST linkages, therefore, provide a natural continuum between the clusters, without distortion. Forty-six Silurian Tonoloway Limestone samples were analyzed for 16 sedimentary features indicative of subaerial exposure. Cluster analysis identified nine clusters which were reduced to five final, ordered groups by MST.  相似文献

The Himalayan fold-thrust belt has been visited by many disastrous earthquakes (magnitude > 6) time and again. This active collisional orogen bordering Indian subcontinent in the north remains a potential seismic threat of similar magnitude in the adjoining countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and China. Though earthquake forecasting is riddled with all conjectures and still not a proven presumption, identifying likely source zones of such disastrous earthquakes would be an important contribution to seismic hazard assessment. In this study, we have worked out spatio-temporal clustering of earthquakes (Mb ?? 4.5; 1964?C2006) in the Himalayas. ??Point density?? spatial statistics has helped in detecting 22 spatial seismicity clusters. Earthquake catalog is then treated with a moving time-distance window technique (inter-event time 35 days and distance 100 ± 20 km) to bring out temporal clusters by recognizing several foreshock-main shock-aftershock (FMA) sequences. A total of 53 such temporal sequences identified in the process are confined within the 22 spatial clusters. Though each of these spatio-temporal clusters deserves in-depth analysis, we short-listed only eight such clusters that are dissected by active tectonic discontinuities like MBT/MCT for detail study. Spatio-temporal clusters have been used to constrain the potential source zones. These eight well-defined spatio-temporal clusters demonstrate recurrent moderate to large earthquakes. We assumed that the length of these clusters are indicating the possible maximum rupture lengths and thus empirically estimated the maximum possible magnitudes of eight clusters that can be generated from them (from west to east) as 8.0, 8.3, 8.2, 8.3, 8.2, 8.4, 8.0 and 7.7. Based on comparative study of the eight cluster zones contemplating with their temporal recurrences, historical seismic records, presence of intersecting faults and estimated magnitudes, we have guessed the possibility that Kangra, East Nepal, Garhwal and Kumaun?CWest Nepal clusters, in decreasing order of earthquake threat, are potential source zones for large earthquakes (??7.7 M) in future.  相似文献
