Understanding the process of volcanic lateral collapse, which may be governed by numerous possible factors, can be significantly improved by identifying the role of each factor. Here we test the perturbation induced in a volcano by tectonic normal faulting in the basement, magma inflation and multiple flank deformation, based on fieldwork and analogue experiments. Ollagüe Volcano (Chile‐Bolivia) provides a good example of a sector collapse with exposed substrate extensional tectonics, and our experiments have been done with conditions consistent with field data. Results show that none of the possible tectonic conditions led to complete lateral failure; in agreement also with the field data, sector collapse of the model cone occurred only when a shallow magmatic intrusion within the volcano was reproduced. Sub-volcanic intrusive networks, of which cone sheets are recognised as a major constituent, partially control volcano growth and eruption style. The accepted cone sheet model is that these confocally dipping intrusions originate from an unexposed central magma chamber through dip-parallel magma flow. However, the emplacement mechanism of cone sheets remains poorly understood. The ∼58 Ma cone sheet swarm of Ardnamurchan, NW Scotland, offers an excellent opportunity to further resolve the emplacement dynamics of cone sheets, through studying magma flow, and their importance in volcanic edifice construction. Structural measurements and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analyses have constrained a lateral magma flow pattern, consistently oriented NW–SE, in the majority of the Ardnamurchan cone sheets. Field observations also highlight the importance of host rock structure and interference between competing local and regional stress fields in controlling intrusion geometry. Our observations suggest cone sheet formation may be linked to laterally propagating NW–SE trending regional dykes, sourced from laterally adjacent magmatic systems (likely the Palaeogene Mull Central Complex), which are deflected around the central complex by stress field interference. Implicitly, edifice construction and potential eruption precursors observed at a volcano may instigate, or result from, magmatic activity in laterally adjacent volcanic systems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper shows that although volcanoes can be aligned along transcurrent faults, their growth can in reality be controlled by secondary structures that have a different orientation and kinematics. Assessing the relationships between local structures and volcano growth can be very useful for the evaluation of volcanic hazards and for economic purposes such as geothermal and hydrogeological exploration. In the north-western Bicol Volcanic Arc (Luzon, Philippines) the Quaternary Labo and Caayunan volcanoes are aligned with the NW-striking transcurrent Philippine Fault System. They are exceptional examples of composite volcanoes mostly comprising lava domes, where regional tectonic structures and hydraulic radial fracturing have alternated to control volcano growth. Field data and analogue modelling demonstrate that apical depressions affecting the domes reflect the geometry of magma-feeding fractures. These data, together with alignments of domes and hot springs and other structural information, suggest that magma rose at depth along the NW-striking transcurrent faults, but that in the uppermost crust magma rose along NE-striking fractures parallel to the greatest principal stress.  相似文献

For the first time, about 30 volcanic formations of the back-arc Payun Matru volcanic field (Payun Matru volcanic field, Argentina, 36°S, 69°W) have been sampled for K–Ar geochronology and geochemistry in order to reconstruct the eruptive history of this key province in the Andean back-arc. The Payun Matru volcanic field has been built since final Pleistocene until present with ages ranging from 280 ± 5 to 7 ± 1 ka. Erupted lavas belong to calc-alkaline series, with characteristics of both arc and intraplate magmas. From previous studies, three main units are distinguished: (1) a basaltic field (Los Volcanes), which covers a large surface of the Payun Matru volcanic field, composed of strombolian cones and associated lava flows emitted from 300 ka to Holocene times, (2) the stratovolcano Payun, with intermediate compositions, built around 265 ka, and (3) the shield volcano Payun Matru s.s. characterized by trachytic compositions and a large summit caldera. The earlier stages of the Payun Matru volcano are not dated, but we constrain the major explosive event, related to the eruption of a widespread ignimbrite and to the formation of the caldera, between 168 ± 4 ka (internal wall of caldera) and 82 ± 1 ka (flow within the caldera). Based on the geochemical similarities of the ignimbrite and the upper lava flow of the pre-caldera cone, we suggest that the age of this event is most probably at the older end of this interval. Numerical modeling using a GIS program has been used to reconstruct the morphological evolution for Payun Matru volcano before and after the caldera collapse. The ancient edifice could be modeled as a flattened cone, 2300 m high, with a volume of about 240 km3. The ignimbrite eruption associated with the Payun Matru caldera formation could be related to the regional tectonic environment, which is characterized by multiple Plio-Pleistocene extensional stages during the last 5 Myr. The evolution of the Nazca plate subduction from a flat slab to a normal dip induced an input of fluid mobile elements and asthenosphere plume-like mantle source beneath the Patagonian lithosphere, which yields the observed intraplate signature. We also interpret this geodynamic evolution as the influence of extensive processes in the upper crust leading to caldera-forming eruptions as observed throughout this province.  相似文献

Susceptibility of intrusion-related landslides in an active volcano was evaluated coupling the landslide susceptibility estimation by random forest (RF), and the probabilistic volcanic vent opening distribution, as proxy for magma injection, using the QVAST tool. In order to develop and test the method proposed here, the RF/QVAST approach was adopted for Stromboli volcano (Southern Italy) since it experienced moderate to huge instability events, it is geomorphologically prone to instability events, and it is affected by active intense volcanic activity that can produce slope instability. The main destabilizing factors of the volcanic flanks are the slope, the aspect, the terrain roughness, the land cover and the litho-technical features of the outcropping rocks. Estimation of volcanic susceptibility shows that the areas with high probability of new vent opening are located in the north-western unstable volcano flank (Sciara del Fuoco), in the volcano summit and the north-eastern volcano flank coherent with the possible re-activation of the eruptive fissures related to the regional tectonic setting. The areas with higher probability of intrusion-related landslides are located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco, while the rest of the island show moderate to low probability of intrusion-related landslide occurrence.  相似文献

广西北海涠洲岛是我国最大的第四纪火山岩海岛。近些年来随着我国核电事业的不断发展,涠洲岛火山最后喷发时代和对区域核电厂址的潜在火山灾害,受到了国内外地学界和核电工业界的广泛关注。我们通过对涠洲岛南部地区射汽岩浆喷发的基浪堆积物的野外地质地貌考察,研究了火山喷发物的岩性特征、沉积结构和堆积规模。同时,对系统采集于不同堆积部位的喷发物样品和上覆的黄土样品进行了电子自旋共振(ESR)年代测试分析,结合前人光释光(OSL)测年结果,得出涠洲岛火山最后一次喷发的时间为晚更新世晚期至全新世早期,距今约13~33ka。  相似文献

Summary  The Stromboli island, in the Aeolian archipelago (Italy), is one of the most active volcanoes in Europe. In the last 13,000 years, its growth has been complicated by four sector collapses affecting the NW flank, the latest of which resulting in the formation of Sciara del Fuoco (SdF) horseshoe-shaped depression. Slope instability phenomena are represented not only by giant deep-seated gravitational slope deformations, but also by more frequent large landslides, such as occurred in December 2002–January 2003, and shallow landslides, involving loose or weakly cemented deposits, that constitute a natural hazard and affect residential and tourists safety. It is noteworthy that in volcanic environment the instability factors are manifold and much more complex than in other non-volcanic contexts. This paper deals with the Stromboli NW flank instability, and focuses on the effects of magma pressure in the feeding system. Two main objectives have been pursued: (1) to test a methodological approach, in order to evaluate a complex instability process; (2) to contribute to the understanding of volcano deformation and collapse mechanisms and associated hazard. A numerical model was developed by the Finite Difference Method and the FLAC 4.0 code, considering a cross-section of the entire volcano, orthogonal to the SdF and including both subaerial and submerged slopes. The stability of the volcano was analysed under gravity alone, and by introducing the magma pressure effect, both related to magmastatic and overpressure components. The results indicate that gravity alone is not sufficient to affect the stability of the volcano slopes, nor is the magmastatic pressure component. If an excess magma pressure component is introduced, instability is produced in accordance with field evidences and recent slope dynamics. 通过十万大山盆地内地震剖面资料和TM遥感图象的地质构造解译,结合重力资料和野外地质观察及构造分析,阐述了十万大山前陆冲断推覆构造的发育特征和前陆盆地的构造演化。前陆冲断推覆构造由3个不同的构造变形带组成:卷入海西和印支期花岗岩体的逆冲断裂带、充填中生代陆相沉积并发生构造滑脱的前陆盆地和对应于华南准地台的前陆腹地。冲断推覆构造的形成和演化是与中、晚古生代钦州海槽晚二叠世的褶皱回返和中生代相继的构造复活密切联系的,它经历了3期主要构造应力作用事件:晚二叠世海西运动晚幕为冲断推覆构造的雏形期,晚三叠世印支运动晚幕的近SN向挤压是陆相前陆盆地的发育期;早白垩世末期燕山运动主幕NW—SE向挤压是现今十万大山前陆冲断推覆构造的成型期。  相似文献

大兴安岭火山岩带北段呼中火山岩区,在中-晚侏罗世时期,最大主压应力轴方向为NW266°~316°,早白垩世最大主压应力轴为NE12°~50°,显示侏罗纪与白垩纪应力场的应力状态是截然不同的,但都处于拉张环境下。中-晚侏罗世由于NNE-SSW向的拉伸应力场的作用,在本区北部发生构造岩浆活动,形成了上黑龙江断陷盆地如NWW向展布的劲涛-蒙克山中基性火山喷发带,派生的NEE向张扭性应力使前中生代基底构造重新活动,形成大面积火山喷发。而早白垩世在NE-SW向拉伸应力场作用下,"额尔古纳地块"东部形成拗陷带,火山基底构造为NE-NNE向。   相似文献

五台山绿岩带中 ,与变质火山 沉积岩系直接相关的金矿化分布广泛 ,具有多种成矿和控矿机制。但就两种主要类型金矿———剪切带型金矿和铁建造型金矿的时空分布、地质特征和赋存的构造部位来看 ,它们都明显地与剪切变形 (韧性的或脆性的 )所产生的构造 热液活化作用有关 ,具显著的构造控矿意义。区域构造分析表明 ,五台山绿岩带的构造格架是一个多级和多期褶皱与断裂的组合 ,总的构造样式是一个紧闭程度向中心增强的复式倒转向形。它们是在北西 南东向挤压作用下递进变形的结果。在这一区域应力场作用下 ,处于不同构造部位的岩石发生变形分解作用 ,从而在紧闭褶皱的翼部产生一系列剪切变形带 ,构成了五台山绿岩带构造控矿机制。本文将以两类绿岩金矿的典型矿床为例 ,对这一控矿构造机制进行全面分析。  相似文献

本文所指的晚第四纪包括晚更新世和全新世。内蒙东部晚第四纪火山活动强烈,北起大兴安岭北部的鄂伦春诺敏河火山群、经阿尔山-柴河、锡林浩特-阿巴嘎火山群,南抵察右后旗乌兰哈达火山群,断续延伸约1000km,分布着约390余座大小不一、形态各异的火山,构成了内蒙东部壮观的北北东向第四纪火山喷发带。火山类型包括玛珥式、夏威夷式、斯通博利式、亚布里尼式和冰岛式,以斯通博利式最为发育。爆破式火山作用包括射汽、射汽-岩浆爆发和岩浆爆发。火山岩类型主要为碱性玄武岩及其火山碎屑物(岩),火山岩具初期裂谷构造属性。火山活动主体受北北东向基底断裂控制,但就具体火山群而言,又多处于北东和北西向基底深断裂交会处。区内新构造与火山活动密切相关,深部岩浆的上侵,可能是控制本区新构造活动的主因。尤其是全新世火山的空间展布,显示了内蒙东部新构造的活动性。  相似文献

探讨了中国西北地区大型叠合含油气盆地的主要特征 ,研究表明 ,在中国西北叠合盆地发展演化过程中 ,构造变革和构造耦合起着主导作用。构造变革包括大地构造格局的转变、沉积区和剥蚀区的转换、盆地类型的转换、大型区域性不整合的出现以及发生盆地构造反转等 ,这种构造变革具有多期性。叠合盆地构造耦合的方式主要涉及深部和浅部构造的耦合和盆山耦合等。盆山转换、盆山过渡带深部浅部构造的耦合、盆地沉降与造山带隆升耦合以及不同方向构造的耦合 ,反映了盆山耦合的多样性和复杂性。中国西北叠合盆地构造特征主要表现为构造的分层性、分带性、分段性、交叉性以及区域构造应力场的多变性 ,喜马拉雅运动对于中国西北叠合盆地最后的构造改造以及构造定型起着重要的制约作用。  相似文献

长白山天池火山老虎洞期火山活动发生在更新世晚期白头山组碱性粗面岩喷发之后,火山活动的产物主要为玄武岩质火山碎屑岩和少量玄武岩质或粗面岩质熔岩;老虎洞组火山岩的稀土元素地球化学特征介于早期玄武岩和气象站组碱流岩两者之间,将二者有机地联系在一起,使整个天池火山岩的演化趋势更加清晰。老虎洞组火山岩的存在充分证明了天池火山的粗面岩类与该区早期的大量玄武岩具有成因联系。长白山天池火山活动的成因并非简单地用西太平洋板块的俯冲作用所能解释的。  相似文献

This paper focuses on the recent tectonic evolution of the Bay of Naples with the aim of exploring the connection between local tectonics and volcanism. We reprocessed the seismic reflection dataset acquired in the area in the late 1973. The new processing was highly successful in obtaining a decisive strong reduction of random noise, removal of coherent noise and reduction of spatial aliasing. Classical interpretative schemes and complex attributes of seismic traces were used to reconstruct fault kinematics and reflector patterns. The results show that the faults affecting the Bay of Naples exhibit prevailing NE structural strikes, with the exception of the Pozzuoli Caldera where NW patterns are also common. Many faults are subvertical and show seismic evidence of volcanic activity along them. A main alignment of conjugate NE–SW faults, named here as “Magnaghi–Sebeto line”, intersects several submarine volcanic banks and separates the bay into two sectors, characterized by important geological, geophysical and petrochemical differences. The structural configuration of the bay may reflect the occurrence of either oblique extension or a transfer zone of the NW–SE fault system, along which, in the Campanian–Lucanian Apennine chain, great vertical displacements occur.  相似文献

本文简述近些年中国年轻火山岩的铀钍非平衡研究进展.中国东部(五大连池,天池,镜泊湖,龙岗,大兴安岭,海南岛)的年轻火山岩都显示显著的230Th过剩,表明岩浆来源于含石榴子石的深部地幔,并且部分熔融速率低.其中五大连池主要来自深部(≥75km)的岩石圈地幔,天池、镜泊湖、龙岗和大兴安岭岩浆主要来自软流圈地幔,而海南岛火山岩则显示下地慢特征.中国东部年轻火山岩中U-Th非平衡并没有显示俯冲的太平洋板块对年轻火山岩的物质贡献.我们近来发现年轻火山岩中含有锆石.长白山天池火山岩千年喷发的碱流岩中的锆石U-Th等时线年龄为7~10ka.腾冲马鞍山的锆石表面U-Th等时线年龄为55ka,而锆石内部年龄是90ka.锆石年龄可能表明,相对于腾冲马鞍山的小喷发,大喷发的长白山天池火山岩浆滞留年龄短.长白山天池火山的很短的滞留时间表明其存在危险性.  相似文献

宁芜火山岩盆地是长江中下游成矿带的重要组成部分,盆地内广泛产出玢岩型铁矿床。为探讨宁芜火山岩盆地深部结构,作者完成了三条穿越宁芜火山岩盆地的深反射地震剖面。三条剖面的长度不一,NW01剖面长度42km,NW02长56.3km,NW03长27.1km。三条剖面的排列长度都为720道,采样间隔2ms,记录长度16s。因为本文的主要研究对象是宁芜火山岩盆地上地壳的结构特征,因此只用了总记录长度的前4s数据。通过本次研究揭示了宁芜矿集区的上地壳精细结构、岩浆和断裂系统的空间展布形态。不仅验证了以往对盆地的部分认识,而且给出了新的认识。(1)发现了直接控制盆地火山-岩浆活动的南东和北西边界断裂并非人们经常认为的两大基底深断裂:方山-南陵断裂和长江断裂带,而是北西向F1和南东向F2断裂;(2)宁芜火山岩盆地以马鞍山-薛津断裂为界向北北东方向滑脱,造成了盆地南西高北东低的隆凹构造格局;(3)阐明了就位于盆地下方的为火山-岩浆活动提供补给和热源的岩浆房的空间展布特征;(4)清晰地厘定了盆地内的断裂系统,其中最主要的断裂是隐伏于宁芜火山岩盆地深部的控制深部岩浆活动的盆中基底断裂(BCF),控制着深部岩浆岩的空间展布格局并对宁芜火山岩盆地的地层和断裂系统有强烈地改造作用。本文的发现为宁芜火山岩盆地深部结构认识、成矿预测及成矿动力学分析提供了可借鉴的证据。  相似文献

The present study aims mainly to delineate and outline the regional subsurface structural and tectonic framework of the buried basement rocks of Abu El Gharadig Basin, Northern Western Desert, Egypt. The potential field data (Bouguer gravity and total intensity aeromagnetic maps) carried out in the Abu El Gharadig Basin had been analyzed together with other geophysical and geological studies. The execution of this study is initiated by transformation of the total intensity aeromagnetic data to the reduced to pole (RTP) magnetic map. This is followed by applying several transformation techniques and various filtering processes through qualitative and quantitative analyses on both of the gravity and magnetic data. These techniques include the qualitative interpretation of gravity, total intensity magnetic and RTP magnetic maps. Regional–residual separation is carried out using the power spectrum. Also, the analytic signal and second vertical derivative techniques are applied to delineate the hidden anomalies. Aeromagnetic anomalies in the area reflect significant features on the basement tectonics, on the deep-seated structures and on the shallow-seated ones. Major faults and intrusions in the area are indicated to be mainly along the NE–SW, NW–SE, ENE–WSW and E–W directions. The Bouguer gravity map indicates major basement fracturing, as well as variations in the sedimentary basins and ridges and subsequent tectonic disturbances. The most obvious anomalous trends on the gravity map, based on their frequencies and amplitudes, are along the NE–SW, ENE–WSW, E–W and NW–SE trends. The main of Abu EL Gharadig Basin depositional center does not show sharp variations, because of the homogeneity of the marine rocks and the great basement depths.  相似文献

应用高精度铀系不平衡TIMS法测定了吉林长白山天池火山岩锥体中上部的11个熔岩、浮岩样品的年龄,并据此划分出晚更新世、全新世以来6个喷发活动期次,分别为:>350ka、70ka、18-25ka、10ka、4-5ka和1-0.75ka。此外,还介绍了铀系不平衡法火山岩年代学的基本原理和试验流程,讨论了样品封闭等问题。  相似文献

The plateau east of the Nile Valley at El Minia, Egypt, has been chosen for the siting of El Minia El Gedida city. Problems of underground caves suggested the need for integral geological, geotechnical and environmental hazard studies to examine the suitability of the area as a building site.Geologically, the area is formed of a thick sequence of Middle Eocene fossiliferous limestones and chalk with some layers of sandy, cherty and marly limestones. These rocks have heterogeneous physical and mechanical properties and fall within the weak to very weak range of limestones. Their mode of failure is almost of the brittle type developing extension, wedge and single shear type fractures. The mechanical properties are controlled by their physical, geological and mineralogical properties. They increase with density and dolomite content and decrease with porosity and calcite content. Empirical equations for some of these relations as well as the relation between field measures of rebound index and compressive strength are presented.Both regional and detailed structural analyses revealed the presence of major and minor normal faults and fractures trending in NW and NE directions. The NW faults are dominant. They define the topographic escarpments in the area. Most of the caves are aligned along major faults of this trend. Faults, fracture distribution and structural hazard maps of the area are presented. Paleostress tectonic analysis of these fractures suggests that the NW and NE faults are extensional due to tectonic stress which changes from normal to parallel to the Red Sea at different geologic times starting in post Middle Eocene. The similarity of this paleotectonic setting to present Red Sea tectonics points out the possibility of future rejuvenation of these faults.Topographically, the area lies in shallow surface drainage basins. The topographical risk is increased by fracturing and it should be considered if the area is subjected to a long period of heavy rainfall. Radiometrically, El Minia El Gedida city represents one of the lowest natural radioactivity areas within the safe limits recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).  相似文献
