Potsdam sandstone from quarries and outcrops near 19th‐century glassworks sites in Redwood, NY, and Saranac, NY, Mallorytown, ON, and Como and Hudson, QC, commonly contains _97% silica, so in terms of its purity can compete with other historical producers of silica sand (e.g., Cheshire quartzite, MA; southern New Jersey sand). Exploratory analysis of trace element data using multidimensional scaling (MDS) shows that geographically distinct sources of Potsdam sandstone can be distinguished from one another and from competing sources of silica sand, particularly in terms of high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Y, Ti, Zr), the rare earth elements, and radioactive elements (U, Th), and this geochemical signature is carried through to the glass it was used to manufacture. Other trace elements (e.g., Ba, Sr, Rb) are concentrated in various batch ingredients (e.g., limestone, alkali fluxes). The Hf/Nb, La/Ce, Nb/Th, and La/Zr ratios for each type of glass and nearby Potsdam sandstone sources cluster together in distinct fields on MDS plots. These data confirm the use of Potsdam sandstone in these important historical glassworks, and show that except for material sampled from neighboring communities (Mallorytown and Redwood), trace elements can be used to identify specific sources of silica historically used by the glassmaking industry. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Skeletal remains from two California cemeteries bracketing a severe drought that began around 1200 yr B.P. are analyzed to determine drought-related quality of life changes in Native Americans. Cemetery 1 predates the drought at 2895±160 yr B.P. to 1845±90 yr B.P. and Cemetery 2 dates it at 1100±90 yr B.P. to 1220±200 yr B.P. Quality of life was assessed through femoral computerized tomography scan measures of cortical thickness, age at adult death, and pathology/trauma frequency. After controlling for age and sex differences, changes from Cemetery 1 to Cemetery 2 showed decreases in cortical thickness and age at death and increases in pathology and trauma frequency.  相似文献

Coping with floods in the city of Dresden,Germany   总被引:5,自引:2,他引:3  
During August 2002 and again in March 2005 as well as in April 2006 the city of Dresden was hit by floods. The flood in 2002 was an extreme event, only comparable to flooding in 1862 and 1890 in Dresden. The flood discharge in 2006 was the second highest discharge since 1940 at the Dresden gauge although its return period was only about 15 years. This special situation enables a comparison of the preparedness of authorities and households in the flood endangered city of Dresden in 2002 after a long period of relatively low flood discharges and in 2005/2006 just a few years after a severe flood event. Before August 2002, the flood risk awareness and flood preparedness of authorities and households in Dresden was low. The inundation channels and the Elbe riverbed had not been maintained well. Just 13% of the households had undertaken building precautionary measures. The severe flood situation as well as the low flood preparedness led to tremendous damage, e.g., losses to residential buildings amounted to 304 million €. After 2002, the municipal authorities in Dresden developed a new flood management concept and many households were motivated to undertake precautionary measures. Building precautionary measures had been actually undertaken by 67% of the households before the floods in 2005 and 2006. Flood damage was significantly lower, due to the less severe flood situations and the much better preparedness. It is an important challenge for the future to keep preparedness at a high level also without recurrent flood experiences.  相似文献

神华集团在我国CO2地下埋藏的潜在目标区(鄂尔多斯盆地)实施的CO2注入工程仍存在有关其注入层之上泥岩盖层安全性方面的争议.通过对与神华集团CO2注入井相邻且钻遇地层系统、岩石组合一致的JX井三叠系延长组(位于注入层之上)的研究预测一旦CO2透过盖层后的再续固碳能力.研究层位岩屑样品类型主要为长石砂岩和岩屑长石砂岩,其次为岩屑砂岩和岩屑石英砂岩;其物源区岩石类型主要为长英质火山岩、其次为中性火山岩及少量富含石英的沉积岩,具中性斜长岩成分特征;其上段(466~534 m)及下段(666~958 m)砂岩母岩受到弱-中等化学蚀变,并可能经历了再旋回过程;中段(534~666 m)砂岩母岩未受化学蚀变影响,并可能为第一次旋回沉积物.作为潜在的CO2再续固碳场所,延长组砂岩具有实现CO2矿物圈闭的物质条件及形成片钠铝石、方解石、铁白云石和菱铁矿等固碳矿物的潜力.  相似文献

The Petroglyphs of Cheonjeon-ri in the area of Ulsan Metropolitan City in the southeastern part of the Republic of Korea represent outstanding cultural property of the country. The rock carvings—discovered about 40 years ago—provide valuable information on the life of the ancient people of different periods. In 1973, the petroglyphs were designated Korean National Treasure. Apparently, the petroglyphs have suffered damage from weathering such as loss of stone material, current detachment of stone material and deposits on the stone surface. The protection of this masterpiece of historic rock carving has become an important concern in the country. Geoscientific studies were carried out, targeted to stone analysis and to characterization and rating of weathering damage. The diagnostic studies combined laboratory analysis of representative unweathered and weathered stone material and in situ investigation by means of profile measurements at the carvings, mapping of weathering forms, ultrasonic measurements and rebound hardness measurements. Methodology and results of the material and damage diagnosis are presented. The results on type and extent of damage in combination with deduced risk prognosis reveal a considerable threat to the historical site of Cheonjeon-ri due to weathering and they indicate the need of intervention for monument preservation.  相似文献

Schistous rock can be considered—in a first approximation—as cross‐anisotropic linear elastic material. The determination of the corresponding material constants on the basis of the laboratory investigation of rock samples often fails, as the extraction of appropriate cores proves to be unfeasible (the cores disintegrate if the schistosity is pronounced). In this paper a new method is presented to determine the material constants of a linear elastic cross‐anisotropic rock on the basis of cavity expansion field tests, e.g. with a radial jack. To this purpose, an analytic approximation for the deformation of a hydrostatically loaded cylindrical cavity in cross‐anisotropic rock is derived which serves to the inverse analysis of the material parameters. 武陵源峰林是一种新被认识的峰林地貌类型。出于它是以千姿百态、形神兼备的石峰石柱密集,幽峡深壑纵横交错,并衬托以密茂的植被和碧清的溪湖之胜驰名于世,经联合国教科文组织批准列入世界自然遗产名录,成为世界级的重点保护地区。因其所构成的岩石、成因和产生的大地构造历史背景和发育环境具有自己的特色,遂在地貎学上饶有研究价值。在亚洲大地构造图中,武陵源位于东亚壳体南段,云贵地洼区的湘西黔东地穹列的东北端。构成上述峰林的岩石为时代属于晚泥盆世的地台构造层的石英砂岩。这种砂岩为本区地台阶段和缓期的产物,由于它所具有的稳定区型沉积建造特征所决定,其物质组份单纯,粒度和园度也分选性好,质地致密坚硬;同时又因其所在的部位受中生代地洼阶段造山运动的褶皱作用影响较弱,且他于一个宽展型向斜层轴部的末端,岩层产状尚保持平缓,而垂直节理及断层却十分发育,遂于第四纪新构造运动期内上升过程中,在风化、水蚀及重力的综合作用配合下,形成了这样奇丽的峰林景色。  相似文献

Physical, chemical and biogenic weathering considerably threatens all historic stone monuments. Microorganisms, though inconspicuous, are key players of stone surface colonization and penetration. This study highlights eukaryotic microbial communities on dimension stone surfaces from two representative monuments of the “cultural landscape corridor” in the Saale–Unstrut area. The historical buildings were erected from local Triassic limestone and sandstone and are prone to various deteriorative mechanisms. Generally, trebouxiophyceaen algae and ascomycete fungi dominate among the latter dematiaceous fungi and lichen fungi are abundant. Inside the stone substratum, ascomycetes, mosses and even large soil organisms (tardigrades) are present. This may be taken as a hint for the formation of pores with large radii, which are “risk indicators” for progressive weathering and degradation of the rock matrix.  相似文献

针对红山窑膨胀红砂岩具有微膨胀、易软化、易风化的特点,采用扫描电子显微镜、X射线衍射仪、MTS815.03岩石力学刚性电液伺服试验机等先进的设备为测试手段,对3种不同风化程度的膨胀红砂岩湿化过程进行观察和机理分析,从试验和机理两方面探讨膨胀红砂岩的湿化性,从而进一步阐明红砂岩膨胀性、裂隙化具有本质的区别。试验结果表明:(1) 中风化红砂岩干燥时抗压强度为5.85 MPa,饱和试样为0.20 MPa,岩石本身强度随吸水率增加而明显下降,具有强烈的软化作用;(2) 膨胀红砂岩的湿化性随胶结系数的减小而愈加强烈,与红砂岩风化程度(埋深)无关。这些研究成果对红山窑水利枢纽工程红砂岩地基开挖易裂以及边坡表层溜坍预治具有较大的指导意义。  相似文献

泥质砂岩属于黏土岩,具有典型的遇水软化特征。在泥质砂岩富水地层中进行隧道开挖是地下工程的一个挑战性问题。研究了围岩软化与未软化条件下泥质砂岩地层中输水隧洞的稳定性和支护时间。首先,介绍了泥质砂岩遇水软化的力学试验结果;然后,采用基于Hoek-Brown强度准则的岩体参数评价方法,评估泥质砂岩在围岩软化与未软化条件下的力学参数;再后,以兰州水源地引水隧洞为依托工程,采用数值模拟方法对泥质砂岩隧洞软化与未软化工况的围岩稳定性进行了计算分析,得出泥质砂岩遇水软化对隧洞安全性存在显著影响;最后,采用位移收敛法,研究了泥质砂岩软化与未软化工况中,保障隧洞施工安全的合理支护时机。研究表明,泥质砂岩未软化工况中,可考虑隧道围岩初期支护在距掌子面4~5 m位置实施;而在泥质砂岩遇水软化工况中,初期支护建议在掌子面开挖后立刻支护。研究成果可为泥质砂岩地层隧洞的安全施工提供依据。  相似文献

20世纪50年代初期以来,沉积物重力流研究得到沉积学家们的广泛重视,特别是自60年代末期,与沉积物重力流密切相关的水下扇研究成为沉积学领域的热点。通过对国内外大量沉积物重力流及水下扇研究成果的总结,结合我国中新生代陆相断陷盆地水下扇发育的特点,将水下扇的组成岩相划分为基质支撑砾岩相,颗粒支撑砾岩相,砾质砂岩相,块状砂岩相,经典浊积岩相。水下扇的形成机制系重力流成因。内扇以杂基支撑,颗粒支撑砾岩组合为特征;中扇以砾质砂岩、块状砂岩组合为特征;外扇以CDE序及DE序经典浊积岩发育为特征。  相似文献

Landslides are the most established geological hazards in the frontal fold–thrust belt of Northwestern Himalaya comprising of Siwaliks and Murree strata. The continuous rainfall from 2 to 6 September, 2014 caused a massive landslide at village Sadal in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir state. The landslide occurred in the early morning of September 6, 2014, destroying entire Sadal habitation comprising 45 houses, and killing 41 people and more than 500 domestic animals. Google earth images of pre and post-landslide events along with the field measurements show the kinematics of upper and lower parts of the slide. Horizontal and vertical components of displacement and mode of failure suggest the landslide as of complex nature. The shallow subsurface geophysical imaging through Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey shows the failure plane composed of friable mudstone bed underlain by massive mudstone and overlain by cross-bedded sandstone. The depth of debris material above the failure plane ranges from 6 m at Site S1a-b to 10 m at Site-S2b and 20 m at Site S3a. The velocity analysis of Site-3 shows four thick layers represented from bottom to surface by L1—sandstone (V?=?0.16 m/ns, travel time?=?356.36 ns), L2—mudstone (V?=?0.17 m/ns, travel time?=?288.48 ns), L3—massive mudstone (V?=?0.19 m/ns, travel time 220.68 ns), and L4—cross-laminated sandstone (V?=?0.20 m/ns, travel time?=?77.58 ns) overlaying the failure plane. The study shows the landslide occur along the western limb of a fold identified during the present work. We mapped an old landslide on the same limb which shows 5–6 m-thick subsurface debris material with thick rock fragments involved in the landslide process. The detailed geological and geophysical investigations suggest that both the landslides were triggered by extreme rain fall events.  相似文献

膝状挠曲破碎带是某水电站坝基的主要工程地质问题。破碎带岩性为完整性较差的碎裂、碎屑软弱砂岩,并呈现孔隙式胶结接触,其工程力学特性对坝基变形和稳定存在巨大影响。基于破碎带砂岩组织结构疏松、含水率较高、物理力学性能较差等特点,首先开展了基本物理特性试验分析,认为岩石微细观结构复杂、渗透特性较好,属小孔隙率砂岩。其次,开展了室内常规和现场力学特性试验研究;最后,在宏观力学参数确定的基础上,探讨了破碎带对工程作用的响应及影响。结果表明,破碎带岩石内部结构破坏严重,矿物成分主要为石英、长石、绢云母等,化学成分以SiO2为主,但化学侵蚀并不显著。常规剪切曲线呈现出明显的4阶段特征,三轴压缩试验破坏机制为塑性剪切破坏,表现出强度低、延性扩容明显、出现屈服平台等特征,且碎裂岩强度略高于碎屑岩;现场试验表明岩体变形均匀,变形模量较低,处于60~630 MPa;地基承载力处于0.8~2.3 MPa。研究成果对该水电站坝基工程有重要的参考价值。  相似文献

黄平凹陷上震旦统—三叠系为碳酸盐岩与碎屑岩交互沉积,厚度达5000~6000m,曾具有较好的油气成藏过程。主要有三套烃源岩,即震旦系陡山沱组黑色碳质泥页岩,为"好"烃源岩;下寒武统九门冲组炭质泥页岩和灰岩,以及下寒武统变马冲组—耙榔组泥页岩、炭质泥岩,均为"较好"烃源岩。含油气层主要为下寒武统九门冲组石灰岩、变马冲组—耙榔组砂岩、志留系翁项群二段砂岩和三段泥岩中的砂岩夹层。盖层分布广,厚度大,封盖性好。生储盖组合重复出现,油源、构造的配置关系很好,具有较好的油气保存条件。近期的浅层地震资料表明,虎庄背斜和鱼洞向斜分别可是寻找深层天然气和浅层油气的远景构造。  相似文献

The rate of sandstone weathering in the semi-arid climate of the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia has been estimated from observations of gravestone weathering in the area. The gravestone data points to two distinct stages in the weathering process. The first stage covering the first century of exposure is characterised by a relatively low recession rate of 0.5 mm/100 years. This is followed by a second stage in which the rate of weathering increases sharply to ca 2.5 mm/100 years. The non-linear nature of the weathering trends over time suggests that during the first century of exposure, structural changes took place within the sandstone material, which lay the foundation for accelerated weathering after further exposure. Laboratory trials were also conducted to identify the effectiveness of different weathering processes in the decay of sandstone in this region. Of the four processes examined, only the freeze–thaw cycle produced a significant degree of mass loss and is therefore most likely a strong contributor to the weathering of sandstone in this region.  相似文献

The theoretical and engineering significance for studying the rheological properties of rock (or rock mass)are briefly dealt with .The preliminary study of the rheological properties of the sandstone of an engineering project is made and the experimental results of rheological deformation are shown .The ultimate loading capacities and long-term strength indices at different deformation stages are primarily determined .It is pointed out that due to the obvious relationship between the flow rate and the load ,which is (?u (t) )/?r≠0 along the radial direction of the sample ,as shown by this test ,additional flow shear stress may be developed within the material .Although this shear stress may be very small in magnitude ,it can still be regarded as a simple example of stress redistribution caused by the flow in the material  相似文献

Desert varnish of pristine sandstone and petroglyph surfaces from Takabart Kabort (Naturalistic Bubaline Art School) and Alamas (Tanzina Art School) can be well classified by their (SiO2+Al2O3):MnO2, Al2O3:SiO2, and P2O5:CaO ratios. Specific ratios are due to the occurrence of clay minerals like illite, kaolinite, smectite, and feldspar, quartz, carbonates like calcite and dolomite, manganese oxyhydroxides, and apatite. Their occurrence corresponds to the local origin and composition of the primary aeolian material.

In general, the analyzed desert varnish shows lamination patterns characterized by alternating MnO2-rich and -poor layers (25 wt% MnO2) at rather constant iron oxyhydroxide content (6 wt% Fe2O3). Varnish on non-engraved surfaces exhibits three MnO2-rich layers, whereas varnish-coated petroglyphs reveal minor lamination patterns corresponding to the dating of petroglyphs by rock art. The older Naturalistic Bubaline Art School petroglyphs (about 6–4 ka BP) and the younger Tazina Art School petroglyphs (about 3.8–3 ka BP) contain only two and one MnO2-rich layer, respectively. It is assumed that the occurrence of such microlaminations is caused by climate changes in North Africa. Three humid periods are discerned from the Terminal Pleistocene to Holocene in the literature. Such periods are suitable to induce manganese accumulation by biotic and abiotic processes. Accordingly, the distinct lamination patterns gained from this study verify the dating of petroglyphs by rock art. From another point of view, classification of the above petroglyphs may be provided by analyses of microlaminations independently on cultural historical aspects.  相似文献

针对干湿循环作用下岩石强度劣化引发工程岩体稳定性控制问题,以山西忻州保德煤矿8煤顶板中粒长石石英砂岩为例,对砂岩进行有机硅材料改性试验。通过单轴压缩试验研究改性前、后砂岩经历不同干湿循环作用后的强度损伤劣化规律,采用电泳法对比分析改性前、后砂岩表面ζ电位变化规律,并探讨了有机硅材料改性砂岩的改性机制。结果表明,(1)改性后砂岩的单轴抗压强度、弹性模量和变形模量明显提高,单轴抗压强度提高21.7%,弹性模量提高22.2%,变形模量提高23%;(2)受干湿循环作用砂岩强度劣化效应明显,随干湿循环次数增多,砂岩单轴抗压强度、弹性模量和变形模量均呈负指数关系降低;(3)有机硅材料对砂岩表面的电性有较大影响,随着岩样悬浮液p H值的降低,砂岩表面的负电性逐渐减弱至不带电,最后变为正电。  相似文献
