Methylmercury (MeHg) and total Hg (THg) concentrations in soil profiles were monitored in the Thur River basin (Alsace, France), where a chlor-alkali plant has been located in the city of Vieux-Thann since the 1930s. Three soil types were studied according to their characteristics and location in the catchment: industrial soil, grassland soil and alluvial soil. Contamination of MeHg and THg in soil was important in the vicinity of the plant, especially in industrial and alluvial soil. Concentrations of MeHg reached 27 ng g−1 and 29,000 ng g−1 for THg, exceeding the predictable no effect concentration. Significant ecotoxicological risk exists in this area and remedial actions on several soil types are suggested. In each type of soil, MeHg concentrations were highest in topsoil, which decreased with depth. Concentrations of MeHg were negatively correlated with soil organic matter and total S, particularly when MeHg concentrations exceeded 8 ng g−1. Under these conditions, MeHg concentrations in soil seemed to be influenced by THg, soil organic matter and total S concentrations. It was found that high MeHg/THg ratios (near 2%) in soil were mainly related to the combined soil environmental conditions such as low THg concentrations, low organic C/N ratios (<11) and relatively low pH (5–5.5). Nevertheless, even when the MeHg/THg ratio was low (∼0.04%), MeHg and THg concentrations were elevated, up to 13 ng g−1 and to 29,000 ng g−1, respectively. Thus, both THg and MeHg concentrations should be taken into account to assess potential environmental risks of Hg.  相似文献

Concentrations of total Hg and methylmercury (MMHg) in riparian soil, mine-waste calcine, sediment, and moss samples collected from abandoned Hg mines in Wanshan district, Guizhou province, China, were measured to show regional dispersion of Hg-contamination. High total Hg and MMHg concentrations obtained in riparian soils from mined areas, ranged from 5.1 to 790 mg kg−1 and 0.13 to 15 ng g−1, respectively. However, total Hg and MMHg concentrations in the soils collected from control sites were significantly lower varying from 0.1 to 1.2 mg kg−1 and 0.10 to 1.6 ng g−1, respectively. Total Hg and MMHg concentrations in sediments varied from 90 to 930 mg kg−1 and 3.0 to 20 ng g−1, respectively. Total Hg concentrations in mine-waste calcines were highly elevated ranging from 5.7 to 4400 mg kg−1, but MMHg concentrations were generally low ranging from 0.17 to 1.1 ng g−1. Similar to the high Hg concentrations in soil and sediments, moss samples collected from rocks ranged from 1.0 to 95 mg kg−1 in total Hg and from 0.21 to 20 ng g−1 in MMHg. Elevated Hg concentrations in mosses suggest that atmospheric deposition might be an important pathway of Hg to the local terrestrial system. Moreover, the spatial distribution patterns of Hg contamination in the local environment suggest derivation from historic Hg mining sites in the Wanshan area.  相似文献

Elemental Hg–Au amalgamation mining practices are used widely in many developing countries resulting in significant Hg contamination of surrounding ecosystems. The authors examined for the first time Hg contamination in air, water, sediment, soil and crops in the Tongguan Au mining area, China, where elemental Hg has been used to extract Au for many years. Total gaseous Hg (TGM) concentrations in ambient air in the Tongguan area were significantly elevated compared to regional background concentrations. The average TGM concentrations in ambient air in a Au mill reached 18,000 ng m−3, which exceeds the maximum allowable occupational standard for TGM of 10,000 ng m−3 in China. Both total and methyl-Hg concentrations in stream water, stream sediment, and soil samples collected in the Tongguan area were elevated compared to methyl-Hg reported in artisanal Au mining areas in Suriname and the Amazon River basin. Total Hg concentrations in vegetable and wheat samples ranged from 42 to 640 μg kg−1, all of which significantly exceed the Chinese guidance limit for vegetables (10 μg kg−1) and foodstuffs other than fish (20 μg kg−1). Fortunately, methyl-Hg was not significantly accumulated in the crops sampled in this study, where concentrations varied from 0.2 to 7.7 μg kg−1.  相似文献

Mercury concentrations were determined in stream sediments from the Camaquã River Basin, located in the shield region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The resulting geochemical data show that overbank floodplain deposits exhibit higher concentrations than sediments collected from the active channel bed. In addition, higher Hg concentrations were measured in the fine(<63 μm) sediment fraction of the samples. Total Hg concentrations in the fine fraction of active stream sediments from Lavras do Sul County, which have been influenced by past gold mining activities, have decreased during the last five years to values ≤142 ng g−1. However, in a settling pond containing abandoned mine wastes, the Hg concentration of a bulk sample remained exceptionally high (5220 ng g−1). Preliminary speciation results show that Hg0 is the predominant species in most of the samples. This was the form of Hg released by the gold amalgamation activities in the area, and appears to be relatively stable under the existing Eh and pH conditions.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an important co-existing elemental component of the mineral matrix of mercury (Hg) ore deposits. The hazards associated with Se contamination of the aquatic ecosystems in Hg mining areas; however, are often overlooked by environmental researchers due to a preoccupation with Hg. Selenium may also pose a long-term risk to the local ecosystem, and further complicate the situation as Se may also play an important antagonistic role against Hg. Furthermore, most studies on Se pollution have focused only on total Se, whereas the toxicity, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation of Se in aquatic ecosystems is primarily determined by its site-specific individual species. In this study, the concentrations of total Se, inorganic Se (tetravalent and hexavalent), and organic Se were determined in water samples collected from 41 typical sites selected in rivers, tributaries, and springs in Wanshan, China, where Hg and Se co-occur due to historic Hg mining and retorting activities. Se concentrations were observed to decrease with distance from mine-waste calcines, which indicated that mine-waste calcines may be significant sources of the elevated Se in the rivers, especially in downstream areas within 8 km from the mine-waste calcines. The concentration of total aqueous Se throughout the study area was highly variable (3.8 ± 6.0 μg L−1) and on average was one order of magnitude greater than that in natural river systems worldwide (0.1–0.3 μg L−1). The majority of the Se was hexavalent (3.1 ± 4.9 μg L−1; 65%), followed by tetravalent (0.53 ± 0.86 μg L−1; 15%) and organic forms (0.85 ± 1.5 μg L−1; 20%), possibly due to the generally alkaline conditions. Se concentrations in some sampling sites exceeded certain recommended limit of values. However, the existing criteria for Se in aquatic system are mainly based on total Se and the recommended limit of values in different countries or organizations are inconsistent with one another. Therefore, the need to consider Se speciation rather than only total Se is highlighted for future studies.  相似文献

Even casual observations of continental hot springs reveal that photosynthesis has its limits. In an effort to explore the transition to photosynthesis, field measurements of temperature and pH were made at 996 hot spring locations at Yellowstone National Park ranging from 14° to 94 °C and pH from 0.8 to 9.7. In addition, sulfide measurements were made in 426 of these locations showing concentrations up to 8820 μg L? 1 total sulfide. These data indicate that the previously established upper temperature (73–75 °C) for the transition to photosynthesis is reached in many basic hot springs, but that the transition occurs at lower temperature with decreasing pH below ~ 6.5. As an example, no strong evidence for photosynthesis was found above 45 °C at pH ~ 2. In several locations, photosynthesis appears to be suppressed despite temperatures and pH values that permit photosynthesis elsewhere. Sulfide concentrations may be responsible for the suppression of photosynthesis at these sites. Total sulfide concentrations were observed to decrease downstream in hot spring outflow channels. Abiotic processes (degassing, oxidation, mineral precipitation, etc.) are too slow to account for these decreases, suggesting an explanation from microbial sulfide oxidation that is supported by field experiments. Microbial sulfide oxidation may determine the ultimate suitability of some hot springs for microbial photosynthesis.  相似文献

Total dissolved and total particulate Hg mass balances were estimated during one hydrological period (July 2001–June 2002) in the Thur River basin, which is heavily polluted by chlor-alkali industrial activity. The seasonal variations of the Hg dynamics in the aquatic environment were assessed using total Hg concentrations in bottom sediment and suspended matter, and total and reactive dissolved Hg concentrations in the water. The impact of the chlor-alkali plant (CAP) remains the largest concern for Hg contamination of this river system. Upstream from the CAP, the Hg partitioning between dissolved and particulate phases was principally controlled by the dissolved fraction due to snow melting during spring high flow, while during low flow, Hg was primarily adsorbed onto particulates. Downstream from the CAP, the Hg partitioning is controlled by the concentration of dissolved organic and inorganic ligands and by the total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations. Nevertheless, the particulate fluxes were five times higher than the dissolved ones. Most of the total annual flux of Hg supplied by the CAP to the river is transported to the outlet of the catchment (total Hg flux: 70 μg m−2 a−1). Downstream from the CAP, the bottom sediment, mainly composed of coarse sediment (>63 μm) and depleted in organic matter, has a weak capacity to trap Hg in the river channel and the stock of Hg is low (4 mg m−2) showing that the residence time of Hg in this river is short.  相似文献

We report the presence of coenzyme factor 430 (F430), a prosthetic group of methyl coenzyme M reductase for archaeal methanogenesis, in the deep sub-seafloor biosphere. At 106.7 m depth in sediment collected off Shimokita Peninsula, northwestern Pacific, its concentration was estimated to be at least 40 fmol g sediment−1 (i.e. 36 pg g−1 wet sediment). This is about three orders of magnitude lower than typical concentrations of archaeal intact polar lipids in similar sub-seafloor sediments. On the basis of the concentration of F430 in methanogens and conversion to biomass composed of typical sub-seafloor microbial cells, we estimated that ca. 2 × 106 cells g−1 could be methanogens in the deeply buried marine sediment.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are formed and released unintentionally from anthropogenic sources. The high persistence of PCDD/Fs results in the concentrations of these contaminants in environment decreasing only very slowly. Two transport pathways, air and water, carry PCDD/Fs into all regions of the world. Recently, more frequent extreme weather events, such as storms and floods, have been projected to occur as a result of global warming. Extreme weather events have a documented impact on the remobilization and subsequent bioavailability of POPs. In this study, three specific episodes, namely winter monsoon, southeast biomass burning and tropical cyclone (typhoon) events, which influence the environmental fate and transport of PCDD/Fs in Taiwan, were evaluated based on a climate change scenario. During the winter (northeast) monsoon period, the temperature and relative humidity observed in northern Taiwan decreases sharply. During this time, the quantity of PCDD/Fs adsorbed onto suspended particles, as observed at background sites, was found to increase from 300 ± 127 to 630 ± 115 pg I-TEQ g-TSP−1, which is even higher than that measured in Taipei City (438 ± 80 pg I-TEQ g-TSP−1). Hence, the winter monsoon not only brings cold air but also transports air pollutants and dust over long distances from mainland China to Taiwan. During the 2010 Southeast Asia biomass burning events (2010/3/22–3/28), the level of atmospheric PCDD/Fs were measured in central Taiwan (Mt. Lulin) and in the source region of northern Thailand (Chiang Mai); this revealed that the variations in atmospheric PCDD/F concentrations at these two sites followed a similar pattern. On 25 March 2010, the atmospheric PCDD/F concentration increased dramatically from 1.43 to 6.09 fg I-TEQ m−3 at Mt. Lulin and from 7.64 to 12.1 fg I-TEQ m−3 in northern Thailand. However, the atmospheric PCDD/F concentration decreased dramatically 1 day after the biomass burning event. Based on the measurements from a dated sediment core collected at a reservoir in northern Taiwan, the sharp increases in input fluxes of PCDD/Fs and mineral-derived elements levels in 1990 (20 ng I-TEQ m−2 year−1), 2001 (17 ng I-TEQ m−2 year−1), 2004 (16 ng I-TEQ m−2 year−1) and 2005 (15 ng I-TEQ m−2 year−1) seem to be a result of a deep turbid layer formed upstream due to landslides and/or mud flows during the typhoon season. This finding demonstrates the effect of typhoon events on the long-term remobilization of PCDD/Fs as well as supporting the hypothesis that such events would have the potential to remobilize pollutants that have been deposited previously.  相似文献

In order to investigate the mechanism of As release to anoxic ground water in alluvial aquifers, the authors sampled ground waters from 3 piezometer nests, 79 shallow (<45 m) wells, and 6 deep (>80 m) wells, in an area 750 m by 450 m, just north of Barasat, near Kolkata (Calcutta), in southern West Bengal. High concentrations of As (200–1180 μg L−1) are accompanied by high concentrations of Fe (3–13.7 mg L−1) and PO4 (1–6.5 mg L−1). Ground water that is rich in Mn (1–5.3 mg L−1) contains <50 μg L−1 of As. The composition of shallow ground water varies at the 100-m scale laterally and the metre-scale vertically, with vertical gradients in As concentration reaching 200 μg L−1 m−1. The As is supplied by reductive dissolution of FeOOH and release of the sorbed As to solution. The process is driven by natural organic matter in peaty strata both within the aquifer sands and in the overlying confining unit. In well waters, thermo-tolerant coliforms, a proxy for faecal contamination, are not present in high numbers (<10 cfu/100 ml in 85% of wells) showing that faecally-derived organic matter does not enter the aquifer, does not drive reduction of FeOOH, and so does not release As to ground water.Arsenic concentrations are high (≫50 μg L−1) where reduction of FeOOH is complete and its entire load of sorbed As is released to solution, at which point the aquifer sediments become grey in colour as FeOOH vanishes. Where reduction is incomplete, the sediments are brown in colour and resorption of As to residual FeOOH keeps As concentrations below 10 μg L−1 in the presence of dissolved Fe. Sorbed As released by reduction of Mn oxides does not increase As in ground water because the As resorbs to FeOOH. High concentrations of As are common in alluvial aquifers of the Bengal Basin arise because Himalayan erosion supplies immature sediments, with low surface-loadings of FeOOH on mineral grains, to a depositional environment that is rich in organic mater so that complete reduction of FeOOH is common.  相似文献

This paper reports the abundance of elemental S in drain sediments associated with acid sulfate soils. The sediments exhibited near-neutral pH (5.97–7.27), high concentrations of pore-water Fe2+ (1.37–15.9 mM) and abundant oxalate-extractable Fe (up to 4300 μmol g−1). Maximum acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) concentrations in each sediment profile were high (118–1019 μmol g−1), with AVS often exceeding pyrite-S. Elemental S occurred at concentrations of 13–396 μmol g−1, with the higher concentrations exceeding previous concentrations reported for other sedimentary systems. Up to 62% of reduced inorganic S near the sediment/water interface was present as elemental S, due to reaction between AVS and oxidants such as O2 and Fe(III). Significant correlation (r = 0.74; P < 0.05) between elemental S and oxalate-extractable Fe(III) is indicative of elemental S formation by in situ oxidation of AVS. The results indicate that AVS oxidation in near-surface sediments is dynamic in acidified coastal floodplain drains, causing elemental S to be a quantitatively important intermediate S fraction. Transformations of elemental S may therefore strongly influence water quality in ASS landscapes.  相似文献

The concentration and the role of colloids in the transport of elements in the vicinity of a fossil reactor at Bangombé, Gabon, were assessed. Colloid sampling was conducted in seven boreholes around and in the extinguished natural reactor. The ground waters are of Na–Mg–Ca–HCO3 type, with variable salinities, pH 4.6–6.8 and anaerobic Eh values. Filtered ground water and colloid samples were taken from the reactor and the surroundings. Filtered fluids and colloid samples collected on membranes and resuspended in solution were analysed by ICP-MS and ICP-AES in order to examine the element association in the colloid phase within the size range 3000 to 400 to 50 nm. The colloid concentrations for the size 400 to 50 nm range from 80 to 300 ng ml−1. They consist of silica particles associated with ferrihydrite coated with organics. Trace element results show that metals including Pb, Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Bi, Th and U are associated to various degrees with the colloid phase. The distribution ratios of these trace elements between the water and the colloid phase (Kp) were experimentally determined. The high Pb distribution ratios of 10+7 ml g−1 are specifically discussed. Values range from 10+6 to 10+5 ml g−1for the trivalent elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce,  , Bi). For uranium, a Kp of the order of 10+5 ml g−1 may be calculated and compared with data gained using the surface complexation model. These Kp values suggest that the uranium is partially sorbed or associated with ground water colloids. Measurements from the reactor zone show that about 2–4% of the uranium is associated with the colloid phase, which contributes partially to the uranium transport. The rather low colloid concentrations are due to the relatively high concentrations of Ca, Mg and Na in these quasi-neutral waters. These soluble elements contribute to the attachment of the colloids, restricting their transport. This indicates that the colloid phase may not be an important transport medium for the radionuclides in the Bangombé system if their association is reversible. The Bangombé colloid results are compared with those studied for other systems.  相似文献

Salts and brines have very low rare earth element (REE, La-Lu) concentrations. Thus, there is less knowledge of possible transfer of REE patterns during salt dissolution in water-rock interaction. REE levels in both media are close to or rather below limit of detection of commonly used methods. By dissolving salt samples in water followed by REE pre-concentration, REE contents of about 6.2 to 322 ng g−1 were measured for four samples from the Merkers salt mine, Germany. These salts previously were identified to consist mainly of carnallite, halite and/or sylvite. Assuming congruent dissolution, REE patterns of brines and salts differ. Thus, a more complex interaction with (secondary) phases and complexation of REE should be taken into account to explain REE patterns in brines.  相似文献

To understand the geochemical cycle of Hg in hypereutrophic freshwater lake, two sampling campaigns were conducted in Lake Taihu in China during May and September of 2009. The concentrations of unfiltered total Hg (unfTHg) were in the range of 6.8–83 ng L−1 (28 ± 18 ng L−1) in the lake water and total Hg in the sediment was 12–470 ng g−1, both of which are higher than in other background lakes. The concentration of unfTHg in ∼11% of the lake water samples exceeded the second class of the Chinese environmental standards for surface water of 50 ng L−1 (GB 3838-2002), indicating that a high ecological risk is posed by the Hg in Lake Taihu. However, the concentrations of unfiltered total MeHg (unfMeHg) were relatively low in the lake water (0.14 ± 0.05 ng L−1, excluding two samples with 0.81 and 1.0 ng L−1). Lake sediment MeHg varied from 0.2–0.96 ng g−1, with generally low ratios of MeHg/THg of <1%. The low concentrations of TMeHg in the lake water may have resulted from a strong uptake by the high primary productivity and the demethylation of MeHg in oxic conditions. In addition, contrary to the results of previous research conducted in deep-water lakes and reservoirs, the low concentrations of MeHg and low ratio of MeHg/THg in the lake sediment indicates that the net methylation of Hg was not accelerated by the elevated organic matter load created by the eutrophication of Lake Taihu. The results also showed that sediments were a source of THg and MeHg in the water. Higher diffusion fluxes of THg and MeHg may be partly responsible for the higher concentrations of THg in the lake water in May, 2009.  相似文献

In 49 samples of groundwater, sampled in Muzaffargarh District of south-western Punjab, central Pakistan, concentrations of As exceeded the World Health Organisation provisional guideline value, and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), of 10 μg L−1 in 58% of samples and reached up to 906 μg L−1. In this semi-arid region canal irrigation has lead to widespread water-logging, and evaporative concentration of salts has the potential to raise As concentrations in shallow groundwater well above 10 μg L−1. In fact, in rural areas, concentrations stay below 25 μg L−1 because As in the oxic shallow groundwater, and in recharging water, is sorbed to aquifer sediments. In some urban areas, however, shallow groundwater is found to contain elevated levels of As. The spatial distribution of As-rich shallow groundwater indicates either direct contamination with industrial or agricultural chemicals, or some other anthropogenic influence. Geochemical evidence suggests that pollutant organics from unconfined sewage and other sources drives reduction of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) releasing sorbed As to shallow groundwater. The situation is slightly less clear for seven wells sampled which tap deeper groundwater, all of which were found with >50 μg L−1 As. Here As concentrations seem to increase with depth and differing geochemical signatures are seen, suggesting that As concentrations in older groundwater may be governed by different processes. Other data on parameters of potential concern in drinking water are discussed briefly at the end of the paper.  相似文献

Total Hg concentrations and Hg speciation were determined in bottom sediments of Marano lagoon to investigate the consequences of Hg phases on fish farms and shellfish cultivation areas. Mercury phases were separated into cinnabar (HgS) and non-cinnabar compounds, via a thermo-desorption technique, in surface and core sediments; both of which had been contaminated by industrial wastes and mining activity residues. The former are due to an industrial complex, which has been producing cellulose, chlor-alkali and textile artificial fibres since 1940. Processing and seepage wastewaters, which were historically discharged into the Aussa-Corno river system and therefore into the lagoon, have been significantly reduced since 1984 due to the construction of wastewater treatment facilities. The second source is the Isonzo River, which has been the largest contributor of Hg into the northern Adriatic Sea since the 16th century due to Hg mining at the Idrija mine (western Slovenia). Red cinnabar (HgS) derived from the mining area is mostly stable and insoluble under current environmental conditions. In contrast, organically bound Hg, such as Hg bound to humic acids, has the potential to be transformed into bioavailable Hg compounds (for example, methylmercury). The presence of the two Hg forms permitted each Hg source to be quantified. It also allowed the areas with the highest risk of Hg contamination from Hg-rich sediment to be identified; thus potentially avoiding the transfer of Hg from the sediment into the water column and eventually into living biota. The results show that Hg Enrichment Factors in bottom sediments exceed values of 10 and cinnabar dominates the central sector near the main tidal channel where tidal flux is more effective. Non-cinnabar compounds were found to be enriched in fine grained material and organic matter. In fact, up to 98% of total Hg at the Aussa-Corno river mouth and in the inner margin of the basin occurred in an organic form. This evidence, combined with the high contents of total Hg (4.1–6.6 μg g−1 and EF > 10) measured in surface sediments, suggest that Hg in Marano lagoon is involved in biogeochemical transformations (e.g., methylation).  相似文献

The role of the major biogeochemical processes in Hg cycling at the sediment–water interface was investigated in the Grado Lagoon (Northern Adriatic Sea). This wetland system has been extensively contaminated from the Idrija Hg Mine (Slovenia) through the Isonzo River suspended load carried by tidal fluxes. Three approaches were used to study the sediment–water exchange of total Hg (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), reactive Hg (RHg) and dissolved gaseous Hg (DGHg): (1) estimation of diffusive fluxes from porewater and overlying water concentrations, (2) measurements of benthic fluxes using a deployed light benthic chamber in situ and (3) measurements of benthic fluxes during oxic–anoxic transition with a laboratory incubation experiment. The THg solid phase, ranging between 9.5 and 14.4 μg g−1, showed slight variability with depth and time. Conversely, MeHg contents were highest (up to 21.9 ng g−1) at the surface; they tended to decrease to nearly zero concentration with depth, thus suggesting that MeHg production and accumulation occur predominantly just below the sediment–water interface. Porewater MeHg concentrations (0.9–7.9 ng L−1, 0.15–15% of THg) varied seasonally; higher contents were observed in the warmer period. The MeHg diffusive fluxes (up to 17 ng m−2 day−1) were similar to those in the nearby Gulf of Trieste [Covelli, S., Horvat, M., Faganeli, J., Brambati, A., 1999. Porewater distribution and benthic flux of mercury and methylmercury in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea). Estuar. Coast. Shelf Sci. 48, 415–428], although the lagoon sediments contained four-fold higher THg concentrations. Conversely, the THg diffusive fluxes in the lagoon (up to 110 ng m−2 day−1) were one- to two-fold higher than those previously estimated for the Gulf of Trieste. The diurnal MeHg benthic fluxes were highest in summer at both sites (41,000 and 33,000 ng m−2 day−1 at the fishfarm and in the open lagoon, respectively), thus indicating the influence of temperature on microbial processes. The diurnal variations of dissolved THg and especially MeHg were positively correlated with O2 and inversely with DIC, suggesting an important influence of benthic photosynthetic activities on lagoon benthic Hg cycling, possibly through the production of organic matter promptly available for methylation. The results from the dark chamber incubated in the laboratory showed that the regeneration of dissolved THg was slightly affected by the oxic–anoxic transition. Conversely, the benthic flux of MeHg was up to 15-fold higher in sediments overlain by O2 depleted waters. In the anoxic phase, the MeHg fluxes proceeded in parallel with Fe fluxes and the methylated form reached approximately 100% of dissolved THg. The MeHg is mostly released into overlying water (mean recycling efficiency of 89%) until the occurrence of sulphide inhibition, due to scavenging of the available Hg substrate for methylation. The results suggest that sediments in the Grado Lagoon, especially during anoxic events, should be considered as a primary source of MeHg for the water column.  相似文献

Emission of phosphine, a gaseous form of P, is presently considered a potential pathway of the P biogeochemical cycle in aquatic sediments. This study investigated the emission fluxes of phosphine and its potential production mechanisms in the intertidal marshes of the Yangtze Estuary. It is shown that the relatively high emission fluxes of phosphine were measured in warm seasons, with the values of 3.85–24.9 ng m?2 h?1 and 4.21–36.5 ng m?2 h?1 in August and September, respectively. In contrast, lower fluxes of phosphine appeared in May (1.23–6.32 ng m?2 h?1) and January (0.21–0.91 ng m?2 h?1). Also, the fluxes of phosphine were generally higher in the freshwater marsh, compared with the brackish marsh. The spatio-temporal pattern of phosphine emissions was observed to be mainly associated with sediment structure, temperature and salinity. Meanwhile, the significant correlations of phosphine emissions with sedimentary P and alkaline phosphatase activities reflect that phosphine probably derives from the microbial transformations of PO4 and organic P. In addition, it is estimated that approximately 1.08 × 106 g of phosphine is released annually from sediments into the pelagic water of the Yangtze Estuary. Therefore, it is concluded that phosphine emissions may be an important internal source of P, making a significant contribution to the occurrence of algal blooms especially during warm seasons.  相似文献

Mercury is emitted to the air from Hg-enriched and low Hg-containing (natural background) substrates. Emitted Hg can be geogenic, or can be derived from the re-emission of Hg that was previously deposited to the soil from the atmosphere. Atmospheric Hg can be derived from natural and/or anthropogenic sources and can be deposited by wet or dry processes. It is important to understand the relative magnitude of emission, deposition, and re-emission of Hg associated with terrestrial ecosystems with natural background soil Hg concentrations because these landscapes cover large terrestrial surface areas. This information is also important for developing biogeochemical mass balances, assessing the impacts of atmospheric Hg sources, and predicting the effectiveness of regulatory controls at local, regional, and global scales. The major focus of this paper is to discuss air–substrate Hg exchange for low Hg-containing soils (<0.1 μg Hg g−1) from two areas in Nevada and one in Oklahoma, USA. Data collected with field and laboratory gas exchange systems are presented. Results indicate that in order to adequately characterize substrate–air Hg exchange, diel and seasonal data must be collected under a variety of environmental conditions. Field and laboratory data showed that dry deposition of gaseous Hg to substrates with low Hg concentrations is an important process. Environmental parameters important in influencing emissions include soil water content, incident light, temperature, atmospheric oxidants, and air Hg concentrations. There are synergistic and antagonistic effects between these parameters complicating prediction of flux.  相似文献
