Melt inclusions were studied by various methods, including electron and ion microprobe analysis, to determine the compositions of melts and mechanisms of formation of rare-metal peralkaline granites of the Khaldzan Buregtey massif in Mongolia. Primary crystalline and coexisting melt inclusions were found in quartz from the rare-metal granites of intrusive phase V. Among the crystalline inclusions, we identified potassium feldspar, albite, tuhualite, titanite, fluorite, and diverse rare-metal phases, including minerals of zirconium (zircon and gittinsite), niobium (pyrochlore), and rare earth elements (parisite). The observed crystalline inclusions reproduce almost the whole suite of major and accessory minerals of the rare-metal granites, which supports the possibility of their crystallization from a magmatic melt. Melt inclusions in quartz from these rocks are completely crystallized. Their daughter mineral assemblage includes quartz, microcline, aegirine, arfvedsonite, polylithionite, a zirconosilicate, pyrochlore, and a rare-earth fluorocarbonate. The melt inclusions were homogenized in an internally heated gas vessel at a temperature of 850°C and a pressure of 3 kbar. After the experiments, many inclusions were homogeneous and consisted of silicate glass. In addition to silicate glass, some inclusions contained tiny quench zircon crystals confined to the boundary of inclusions, which indicates that the melts were saturated in zircon. In a few inclusions, glass coexisted with a CO2 phase. This allowed us to estimate the content of CO2 in the inclusion as 1.5 wt %. The composition of glasses from the homogeneous melt inclusions is similar to the composition of the rare-metal granites, in particular, with respect to SiO2 (68–74 wt %), TiO2 (0.5–0.9 wt %), FeO (2.2–4.6 wt %), MgO (0.02 wt %), and Na2O + K2O (up to 8.5 wt %). On the other hand, the glasses of melt inclusions appeared to be strongly depleted compared with the rocks in CaO (0.22 and 4 wt %, respectively) and Al2O3 (5.5–7.0 and 9.6 wt %, respectively). The agpaitic index is 1.1–1.7. The melts contain up to 3 wt % H2O and 2–4 wt % F. The trace element analysis of glasses from homogenized melt inclusions in quartz showed that the rare-metal granites were formed from extensively evolved rare-metal alkaline melts with high contents of Zr, Nb, Th, U, Ta, Hf, Rb, Pb, Y, and REE, which reflects the metallogenic signature of the Khaldzan Buregtey deposit. The development of unique rare metal Zr–Nb–REE mineralization in these rocks is related to the prolonged crystallization differentiation of melts and assimilation of enclosing carbonate rocks.

The results of study of chemical composition, mineral-forming medium, P-T conditions of crystallization, and the age characteristics of subvolcanic felsic rocks that are spatially associated with rare-metal granite massifs in the ore units of Transbaikalia (Sherlovaya Gora, Khangilay, Bukuka, Belukha, and Shumilovka) give grounds for defining cogenetic volcanoplutonic associations. These associations within the studied region consist of rare-metal granites, ongonites, rhyolites, ongorhyolites, and trachyrhyodacites, which have much in common, but also many differences. The common chemical features of these rocks are their peraluminium signature, low mafic index and basicity, as well as enrichment (as compared to crust) in trace lithophile elements (Li, Rb, Nb, Ta, Sn, W, and F), the low contents of Zr, REE, and Sr, and the similar distribution of trace and refractory elements. At the same time, these rocks differ in the proportions of sodium and potassium, levels of concentrations of lithophile trace and refractory elements, REE distribution patterns, P-T regimes of crystallization, and the volatile composition. The composition of melts from all types of the studied rocks and trace element distribution between melts and rocks were studied on the basis of ion-microprobe analysis of rehomogenized glasses of melt inclusions in quartz. The highest concentrations of lithophile trace elements in the melt, including Cs (up to 300 ppm), Rb (up to 1002 ppm), U (up to 42 ppm), and Th, were found in the trachyrhyodacites of the Bukuka-Belukha ore unit; in terms of Li content this melt is comparable with the Ary-Bulak ongonites (690 and 715 ppm Li, respectively), and differ by an order of magnitude in the contents of refractory and rare-earth elements (total REE 94.4 and 5.44 ppm, respectively), which is indicative of a lower differentiation degree of this melt as compared to ongonites. Potassic rhyolites are peculiar in the low content of lithophile trace elements, but residual melt reveals notable enrichment in Li (up to 130 ppm) and Nb (up to 120 ppm). The accumulation of U in the residual melt of the trachyrhyodacitic and rhyolitic magmas of Eastern Transbaikalia may indicate their high potential for postmagmatic uranium ore formation. Isotope-geochronological studies (Rb-Sr isotope system) of the Sherlovaya Gora ore unit showed that the entire complex of volcanoplutonic association (granites, ongonites, rhyolites, and ongorhyolites) formed almost simultaneously within an interval of 4 Ma: from 145.7 ± 1.3 Ma at IRSr = 0.70507 ± 20 and MSWD = 0.48 to 141.5 ± 1.0 Ma at IRSr = 0.70359 ± 63 Ma and MSWD = 0.24. A spatial association of the subvolcanic rock complex with rare-metal granite massifs, their formation within a common age interval, geochemical features, and P-T conditions of crystallization suggest that they are genetically related but were derived from variably evolved sources, which originated from a single protolith under the action of mantle plume that existed beneath Central Asia at that time (Yarmolyuk and Kovalenko, 2003).

Arguments in favor of magmatic or metasomatic genesis of the Katugin rare-metal ore deposit are discussed. The geological and mineralogical features of the deposit confirm its magmatic origin: (1) the shape of the ore-bearing massif and location of various types of granites (biotite, biotite–amphibole, amphibole, and amphibole–aegirine); (2) the geochemical properties of the massif rocks corresponding to A type granite (high alkali content (up to 12.3% Na2O + K2O), extremely high FeO/MgO ratio (f = 0.96–1.00), very high content of the most incoherent elements (Rb, Li, Y, Zr, Hf, Ta, Nb, Th, U, Zn, Ga, and REE) and F, and low concentrations of Ca, Mg, Al, P, Ba, and Sr); (3) Fe–F-rich rock-forming minerals; (4) no previously proposed metasomatic zoning and regular replacement of rock-forming minerals corresponding to infiltration fronts of metasomatism. The similar ages of the barren (2066 ± 6 Ma) and ore-bearing (2055 ± 7 Ma) granites along with the features of the ore mineralization speak in favor of the origin of the ore at the magmatic stage of the massif’s evolution. The nature of the ore occurrence and the relationships between the ore minerals support their crystallization from F-rich aluminosilicate melt and also under melt liquation into aluminosilicate and fluoride (and/or aluminofluoride) fractions.

The Late Paleozoic intraplate magmatism of the Selenga-Vitim structural zone of the Baikal region (Khamar-Daban Range) produced granitoids of different geochemical types: palingenic calc-alkaline granitoids, subalkaline monzogranites, and rare-metal Li-F granitoids and their subvolcanic analogues. Subalkaline and rare-metal granitoids occur in the periphery of the Late Paleozoic magmatic zone. Rare metal granite magmatism is manifested in this region as nearly N-S trending intrusive-dike belts comprising multiphase intrusions (Kharagul, Urugudei, and Bitu-Dzhida massifs) with an exposed area of ∼10 km2 and an age of formation from 311 to 321 Ma and series of accompanying dikes. The early phases of the intrusions are made up of biotite granites usually with fluorite, which are changed during the late stage by typical topazbearing rare-metal amazonite-albite granites. In the subvolcanic facies, thicker subalkaline dikes of monzonite porphyry, granite porphyry, and elvan are changed by ongonites, topaz rhyolites, and topazites, which occasionally serve as cement in eruptive and fluid-explosive breccias. The development of multiphase intrusions from early biotite granites to late amazonite-albite granites with Li-F mica was accompanied by an increase in SiO2 and, especially, Na2O contents, whereas the level of (FeO + Fe2O3), CaO, and K2O declined. Geochemical evolution includes an increase in the same direction in the contents of F, Li, Rb, Cs, Sn, Be, Ta, and Pb and a decrease in Ba, Sr, Zn, Zr, Th, and U. Similar evolution is also characteristic of the subvolcanic rocks, which emphasizes the genetic relation of the whole intrusive-dike complex of the Khamar-Daban province. Significant differences were detected in the distribution of K, Ba, Sr, and Zr between the calc-alkaline granitoids and rare-metal Li-F granites. The continental crust-normalized patterns of the raremetal granites show positive anomalies for Li, Rb, Nb, and Pb. The rare-metal Li-F granites could not be produced by palingenesis only, and their formation required specific conditions causing extensive accumulation of characteristic trace elements. During the evolution of granite melts, Li, Rb, Ta, Nb, Sn, W, and F are extensively accumulated in late intrusive phases, which indicates an important role of the processes of magmatic and fluid-magmatic differentiation during their formation. The composition and isotope geochemical characteristics of the supposed magma source material correspond to the ancient Precambrian continental crust with a mean model age of more than 1200 Ma.

By the example of the Orlovka massif of Li-F granites in Eastern Transbaikalia, the major- and trace-element (Li, Be, B, Ta, Nb, W, REE, Y, Zr, and Hf) compositions of the parental melt and the character of its variations during the formation of the differentiated rock series were quantitatively estimated for the first time on the basis of electron and ion microprobe analysis and Raman spectroscopy of rehomogenized glasses of melt inclusions in quartz. It was shown that the composition of the Orlovka melt corresponded to a strongly evolved alumina-saturated granitoid magma (A/CNK = 1.12–1.55) rich in normative albite, poor in normative quartz, and similar to ongonite melts. This magma was strongly enriched in water (up to 9.9 ± 1.1 wt %) and fluorine (up to 2.8 wt %). Most importantly, this massif provided the first evidence for high B2O3 contents in melts (up to 2.09 wt %). The highest contents of trace elements were observed in the melt from pegmatoid bodies in the amazonite granites of the border zone: up to 5077 ppm Li, 6397 ppm Rb, 313 ppm Cs, 62 ppm Ta, 116 ppm Nb, and 62 ppm W. Compared with the daughter rock, the Orlovka melt was depleted at all stages of formation in SiO2 (by up to 6 wt %), Na2O (by up to 2.5 wt %), and, to a smaller extent, in Ti, Fe, Mg, Sr, and Ba, but was enriched in Mn, Rb, F, B, and H2O.

The Zr/Hf ratio as a fractionation indicator of rare-metal granites
The Zr-Hf geochemical indicator, i.e., the Zr/Hf ratio (in wt %) in granitic rocks is proposed to be used as the most reliable indicator of the fractionation and ore potential of rare-metal granites. It was empirically determined that the fractional crystallization of granitic magma according to the scheme granodiorite → biotite granite → leucogranite → Li-F granite is associated with a decrease in the Zr/Hf ratio of the granites. The reason for this is the stronger affinity of Hf than Zr to granitic melt. This was confirmed by experiments on Zr and Hf distribution between granitic melt and crystals of Hf-bearing zircon (T = 800°C, P= 1 kbar). The application of the Zr/Hf indicator was tested at three classic territories of rare-metal granites: eastern Transbaikalia, central Kazakhstan, and the Erzgebirge in the Czech Republic and Germany. The reference Kukul’bei complex of rare-metal granites in eastern Transbaikalia (J3) is characterized by a uniquely high degree of fractionation of the parental granitic melt, with the granites and their vein derivatives forming three intrusive phases. The biotite granites of phase 1 are barren, the leucogranites of phase 2 are accompanied by greisen Sn-W mineral deposits (Spokoininskoe and others), and the final dome-shaped stocks of amazonite Li-F granites of phase 3 host (in their upper parts) Ta deposits of the “apogranite” type: Orlovka, Etyka, and Achikan. The Kukul’bei Complex includes also dikes of ongonites, elvanes, amazonite granites, and miarolitic pegmatites. All granitic rocks of the complex are roughly coeval and have an age of 142±0.6 Ma. The Zr/Hf ratio of the rocks systematically decreases from intrusive phase 1 (40–25) to phases 2 (20–30) and 3 (10–2). Compared to other granite series, the granites of the Kukul’bei Complex are enriched in Rb, Li, Cs, Be, Sn, W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Bi, and F but are depleted in Mg, Ca, Fe, Ti, P, Sr, Ba, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zr, REE, and Y. From earlier to later intrusive phases, the rocks become progressively more strongly enriched or depleted in these elements, and their Zr/Hf ratio systematically decreases from 40 to 2. This ratio serves as a reliable indicator of genetic links, degree of fractionation, and rare-metal potential of granites. Greisen Sn, W, Mo, and Be deposits are expected to accompany granites with Zr/Hf < 25, whereas granites related to Ta deposits should have Zr/Hf < 5.

The data obtained on melt and fluid inclusions in minerals of granites, metasomatic rocks, and veins with tin ore mineralization at the Industrial’noe deposit in the southern part of the Omsukchan trough, northeastern Russia, indicate that the melt from which the quartz of the granites crystallized contained globules of salt melts. Silicate melt inclusions were used to determine the principal parameters of the magmatic melts that formed the granites, which had temperatures at 760–1020°C, were under pressures of 0.3–3.6 kbar, and had densities of 2.11–2.60 g/cm3 and water concentrations of 1.7–7.0 wt %. The results obtained on the fluid inclusions testify that the parameters of the mineral-forming fluids broadly varied and corresponded to temperatures at 920–275°C, pressures 0.1–3.1 kbar, densities of 0.70–1.90 g/cm3, and salinities of 4.0–75.0 wt % equiv. NaCl. Electron microprobe analyses of the glasses of twelve homogenized inclusions show concentrations of major components typical of an acid magmatic melt (wt %, average): 73.2% SiO2, 15.3% Al2O3, 1.3% FeO, 0.6% CaO, 3.1% Na2O, and 4.5% K2O at elevated concentrations of Cl (up to 0.51 wt %, average 0.31 wt %). The concentrations and distribution of some elements (Cl, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Br, Rb, Sr, and Sn) in polyphase salt globules in quartz from both the granites and a mineralized miarolitic cavity in granite were assayed by micro-PIXE (proton-induced X-ray emission). Analyses of eight salt globules in quartz from the granites point to high concentrations (average, wt %) of Cl (27.5), Fe (9.7), Cu (7.2), Mn (1.1), Zn (0.66), Pb (0.37) and (average, ppm) As (2020), Rb (1850), Sr (1090), and Br (990). The salt globules in the miarolitic quartz are rich in (average of 29 globules, wt %) Cl (25.0), Fe (5.4), Mn (1.0), Zn (0.50), Pb (0.24) and (ppm) Rb (810), Sn (540), and Br (470). The synthesis of all data obtained on melt and fluid inclusions in minerals from the Industrial’noe deposit suggest that the genesis of the tin ore mineralization was related to the crystallization of acid magmatic melts. Our database of published contents of volatile, major, and trace elements in melt inclusions in minerals and quenched glasses of volcanic rocks was used to calculate the mean compositions of alkaline and subalkaline melts of ocean islands. The data array included ~10300 determinations from more than 200 publications. The alkaline basic melts (mean Na2O + K2O is 4.75 wt %) are strongly enriched compared with the subalkaline melts (mean Na2O + K2O is 2.70 wt %) in volatile components (0.96 and 0.37 wt % H2O, 650 and 190 ppm Cl, 1480 and 320 ppm F, and 930 and 530 ppm S, respectively) and many trace elements. For instance, the alkaline and subalkaline melts contain 31.8 and 7.2 ppm Rb, 50.1 and 9.6 ppm Nb, and 39.9 and 5.7 ppm La, respectively. Such relations were not observed for V, Cr, Co, Cu, Ga, and Sc. As to the major elements, the alkaline melts show significantly higher contents of Ti, Fe, and P, but lower contents of Si and Mg compared with the subalkaline melts. The enrichment of the alkaline melts in many trace elements compared with the subalkaline melts is retained also in silicic melts. The distribution of trace elements suggests a higher contribution of pyroxenite material during the formation of alkaline melts.

The South Dehgolan pluton, in NW Iran was emplaced into the Sanandaj–Sirjan magmatic–metamorphic zone. This composite intrusion comprises three main groups: (1) monzogabbro–monzodiorite rocks, (2) quartz monzonite–syenite rocks, and (3) a granite suite which crops out in most of the area. The granites generally show high SiO2 content from 72.1%–77.6 wt.% with diagnostic mineralogy consisting of biotite and amphibole along the boundaries of feldspar–quartz crystals which implies anhydrous primary magma compositions. The granite suite is metaluminous and distinguished by high FeOt/MgO ratios (av. 9.6 wt.%), typical of ferroan compositions with a pronounced A‐type affinity with high Na2O + K2O contents, high Ga/Al ratios, enrichment in Zr, Nb, REE, and depletion in Eu. The quartz monzonite–syenites show intermediate SiO2 levels (59.8%–64.5 wt.%) with metaluminous, magnesian to ferroan characteristics, intermediate Na2O + K2O contents, enrichment in Zr, Nb, REE, Ga/Al, and depletion in Eu. The monzogabbro–monzodiorites show overall lower SiO2 content (48.5%–55.9 wt.%) with metaluminous and calc‐alkaline compositions, relatively lower Na2O + K2O contents, low Ga/Al ratios, and FeOt/MgO (av. 1.6 wt.%) ratios, low abundances of Zr, Nb, and lower REE element concentrations relative to the granites and quartz monzonite–syenites. These geochemical differences among the three different rocks suites are likely to indicate different melt origins. We suggest that the South Dehgolan pluton resulted from a change in the geodynamic regime, from compression to extension in the Sanandaj–Sirjan zone during Mesozoic subduction of the Neo‐Tethys oceanic crust beneath the Central Iranian microcontinent.

We report new geological, mineralogical, geochemical and geochronological data about the Katugin Ta-Nb-Y-Zr (REE) deposit, which is located in the Kalar Ridge of Eastern Siberia (the southern part of the Siberian Craton). All these data support a magmatic origin of the Katugin rare-metal deposit rather than the previously proposed metasomatic fault-related origin. Our research has proved the genetic relation between ores of the Katugin deposit and granites of the Katugin complex. We have studied granites of the eastern segment of the Eastern Katugin massif, including arfvedsonite, aegirine-arfvedsonite and aegirine granites. These granites belong to the peralkaline type. They are characterized by high alkali content (up to 11.8 wt% Na2O + K2O), extremely high iron content (FeO1/(FeO1 + MgO) = 0.96–1.00), very high content of most incompatible elements – Rb, Y, Zr, Hf, Ta, Nb, Th, U, REEs (except for Eu) and F, and low concentrations of CaO, MgO, P2O5, Ba, and Sr. They demonstrate negative and CHUR-close εNd(t) values of 0.0…−1.9. We suggest that basaltic magmas of OIB type (possibly with some the crustal contamination) represent a dominant part of the granitic source. Moreover, the fluorine-enriched fluid phases could provide an additional source of the fluorine. We conclude that most of the mineralization of the Katugin ore deposit occurred during the magmatic stage of the alkaline granitic source melt. The results of detailed mineralogical studies suggest three major types of ores in the Katugin deposit: Zr mineralization, Ta-Nb-REE mineralization and aluminum fluoride mineralization. Most of the ore minerals crystallized from the silicate melt during the magmatic stage. The accessory cryolites in granites crystallized from the magmatic silicate melt enriched in fluorine. However, cryolites in large veins and lens-like bodies crystallized in the latest stage from the fluorine enriched melt. The zircons from the ores in the aegirine-arfvedsonite granite have been dated at 2055 ± 7 Ma. This age is close to the previously published 2066 ± 6 Ma zircon age of the aegirine-arfvedsonite granites, suggesting that the formation of the Katugin rare-metal deposit is genetically related to the formation of peralkaline granites. We conclude that Katugin rare-metal granites are anorogenic. They can be related to a Paleoproterozoic (∼2.05 Ga) mantle plume. As there is no evidence of the 2.05 Ga mantle plume in other areas of southern Siberia, we suggest that the Katugin mineralization occurred on the distant allochtonous terrane, which has been accreted to Siberian Craton later.

ABSTRACT

The results of SHRIMP U-Pb ages and in situ Hf isotope of zircons from three granites in the southern Manzhouli region of northeast China, provide new data to understand the subduction process of Mongol-Okhotsk Plate beneath the Erguna massif. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology results yield an age of 265.5 Ma (middle Permian) for fine-grained monzogranite. Rocks from the Early–Middle Triassic are mainly granodiorite (247.4 ± 4.6 and 249.3 ± 4.9 Ma), the granites are with SiO2 = 60.0–77.4 wt.%, Al2O3 = 12.3–16.8wt.% and Na2O/K2O = 0.7–1.9. Chemically, they are metaluminous to peraluminous and belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series. Enrichments in the large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Ba, and K) and depletions in the high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti) are typical for these rock types. The monzogranite (~265 Ma) and granodiorite (~247 Ma) contain zircons with εHf(t) values of 6.3–8.5 and 5.1–7.9, yielding TDM2 model ages of 888–752 and 958–774 Ma, respectively. These geochemical and zircon Hf isotopic data indicate that primary magmas for Middle Permian–Early Triassic granites crystallized from primary magmas generated by Neoproterozoic crustal materials, formed in an active continental margin setting. The andesite of the Gegenaobao formation is similar with the Izu–Bonin–Mariana arc, relating to subduction initiation. Based on the characteristics of exposed rocks and zircon U-Pb ages of andesite and granitoid rocks in the study area, we conclude the onset subduction of Mongol-Okhotsk Plate beneath the Erguna massif may occur at early-middle Permian.

Using various methods of melt inclusion investigation, including electron and ion microprobe techniques, we estimated the composition, evolution, and formation conditions of melts producing the trachydacites and pantellerites of the Late Paleozoic bimodal volcanic association of Dzarta-Khuduk, Central Mongolia. Primary crystalline and melt inclusions were detected in anorthoclase from trachydacites and quartz from pantellerites and pantelleritic tuffs. Among the crystalline inclusions, we identified hedenbergite, fluorapatite, and pyrrhotite in the trachydacites and F-arfvedsonite, fluorite, ilmenite, and the rare REE diorthosilicate chevkinite in the pantellerites. Melt inclusions in anorthoclase from the trachydacites are composed of glass, a gas phase, and daughter minerals (F-arfvedsonite, fluorite, villiaumite, and anorthoclase rim on the inclusion wall). Melt inclusions in quartz from the pantellerites are composed of glass, a gas phase, and a fine-grained salt aggregate consisting of Li, Na, and Ca fluorides (griceite, villiaumite, and fluorite). Melt inclusions in quartz crystalloclasts from the pantelleritic tuffs are composed of homogeneous silicate glasses. The phenocrysts of the trachydacites and pantellerites crystallized at temperatures of 1060–1000°C. During thermometric experiments with quartz-hosted melt inclusions from the pantellerites, the formation of immiscible silicate and salt (fluoride) melts was observed at a temperature of 800°C. Homogeneous melt inclusions in anorthoclase from the trachydacites have both trachydacite and rhyolite compositions (wt %): 68–70 SiO2, 12–13 Al2O3, 0.34–0.74 TiO2, 5–7 FeO, 0.4–0.9 CaO, and 9–12 Na2O + K2O. The agpaitic index ranges from 0.92 to 1.24. The glasses of homogenized melt inclusions in quartz from the pantellerites and pantelleritic tuffs have rhyolitic compositions. Compared with the homogeneous glasses trapped in anorthoclase of the trachydacites, quartz-hosted inclusions from the pantellerites show higher SiO2 (72–78 wt %) and lower Al2O3 contents (7.8–10.0 wt %). They also contain 0.14–0.26 wt % TiO2, 2.5–4.9 wt % FeO, 9–11 wt % Na2O + K2O, and 0.9–0.15 wt % CaO and show an agpaitic index of 1.2–2.05. Homogeneous melt inclusions in quartz from the pantelleritic tuffs contain 69–72 wt % SiO2. The contents of other major components, including TiO2, Al2O3, FeO, and CaO, are close to those in the homogeneous glasses of quartzhosted melt inclusions in the pantellerites. The contents of Na2O + K2O are 4–10 wt %, and the agpaitic index is 1.0–1.6. The glasses of melt inclusions from each rock group show distinctive volatile compositions. The H2O content is up to 0.08 wt % in anorthoclase of the trachydacites, 0.4–1.4 wt % in quartz of the pantellerites, and up to 5 wt % in quartz of the pantelleritic tuffs. The content of F in the glasses of melt inclusions in the phenocrysts of the trachydacites is no higher than 0.67 wt %, and up to 1.4–2.8 wt % in quartz from the pantellerites. The Cl content is up to 0.2 wt % in the glasses of melt inclusions in the minerals of the trachydacites and up to 0.5 wt % in the glasses of quartz-hosted melt inclusions from the pantellerites. The investigation of trace elements in the homogenized glasses of melt inclusions in minerals showed that the trachydacites and pantellerites were formed from strongly evolved rare-metal alkaline silicate melts with high contents of Li, Zr, Rb, Y, Hf, Th, U, and REE. The analysis of the composition of homogeneous melt inclusions in the minerals of the above rocks allowed us to distinguish magmatic processes resulting in the enrichment of these rocks in trace and rare earth elements. The most important processes are the crystallization differentiation and immiscible separation of silicate and fluoride salt melts. It was also shown that all the melts studied evolved in spatially separated magma chambers. This caused the differences in the character of melt evolution between the trachydacites and pantellerites. During the final stages of differentiation, when the magmatic system was saturated with respect to ore elements, Na-Ca fluoride melts were separated and extracted considerable amounts of Li.

The newly-discovered Donglufang Moe Cu porphyry-skarn deposit is located in the southern Yidun Terrane, southeast Tibet, with more than 80 million tonnes(Mt) of reserves(grading 0.15 wt.% Mo and0.48 wt.% Cu) hosted in Triassic strata and Late Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry. Ree Os dating of molybdenum ore yielded a weighted mean age of 84.9 ± 1.0 Ma and an isochron age of 85.2 ± 0.6 Ma.LA-ICP-MS Ue Pb dating of zircons from the granodiorite porphyry yielded206 Pb/238 U ages ranging from 87.4 Ma to 84.2 Ma with a weighted mean206 Pb/238 U age of 85.1 ±0.5 Ma, indicating a temporal linkage between granitic magmatism and Moe Cu mineralization. Geochemical analyses show that the granodiorite porphyries are I-type granites with Si O_2 contents of 64.3 -66.7 wt.%. These rocks are typically metaluminous with high K_2 O/Na_2 O ratios, low Mg O(1.32 -1.56 wt.%), Cr(5.6 -12.9 ppm), Ni(3.79 -10.81 ppm), Mg#(43 -52) values, and high Sr(304 -844 ppm), Sr/Y(21.2 -50.8) and La/Yb ratios(37.0 -60.1). They are enriched in light rare-earth elements(LREE) relative to heavy rare-earth elements(HREE), with slightly negative Eu anomalies, and are enriched in Th, U and large ion lithophile elements(LILE, e.g., K and Rb), and depleted in high field strength elements(HFSE, e.g., Nb, Ta, P and Ti). They also show negative zircon εHf(t) values(-6.7 to -2.3) and negative whole rock εNd(t) values(à5.2 to-4.3), as well as old Hfe Nd model ages, indicating the magmas were derived from a thickened ancient lower crust within the garneteamphibolite facies. Considering the tectonic evolution of the Yidun Terrane, geochemical characteristics of granodiorite porphyry, and the ages of mineralization obtained in this study. We suggest that the Donglufang deposit was formed in a post-collisional setting, which has a genetic relationship with the emplacement of the granodiorite porphyry. The present study provide key information for the exploration of the Late Cretaceous metallogeny in the Yidun Terrane.

The Xingmeng Orogenic Belt evolved through a long-lived orogeny involving multiple episodes of subduction and accretion. However, there is a debate on its tectonic evolution during the Late Paleozoic. Here, we report geochemical, geochronological, and isotopic data from strongly peraluminous granites and gabbro-diorites from the Sunidzuoqi–Xilinhot region. Zircon U–Pb ages suggest that the intrusive rocks were emplaced during the Early Carboniferous (333–322 Ma). The granites exhibit geochemical characteristics similar to S-type granites, with high SiO2 (72.34–76.53 wt.%), Al2O3 (12.45–14.65 wt.%), and A/CNK (1.07–1.16), but depleted Sr, Nb, and Ta contents. They exhibit positive εNd(t) and εHf(t) values (?0.3 to 2.8 and 2.7–5.7, respectively) and young Nd and Hf model ages (TDM2(Nd)=853–1110 Ma and TDM2(Hf)=975–1184 Ma), suggesting that they may be the partial melting products of heterogeneous sources with variable proportions of pelite, psammite, and metabasaltic rocks. The meta-gabbro-diorites from the Maihantaolegai pluton have low SiO2 (47.06–53.49 wt.%) and K2O (0.04–0.99 wt.%) contents, and demonstrate slight light rare earth element (REE) depletion in the chondrite-normalized REE diagrams. They have high zircon εHf(t) values (14.41–17.34) and young Hf model ages (TDM2(Hf)= 230–418 Ma), indicating a more depleted mantle source. The variations of the Sm/Yb and La/Sm ratios can thus be used to assess the melting degree of the mantle source from 5% to 20%, suggesting a quite shallow mantle melting zone. We propose that the petrogenesis and distribution of the strongly peraluminous granites and gabbro-diorites, as well as the tectonic architecture of the region, can be explained by a ridge subduction model. Based on these results, and previous studies, we suggest a southward ridge subduction model for the Sunidzuoqi–Xilinhot region.

Comprehensive geochemical and geochronological studies were carried out for two-mica granites of the Biryusa block of the Siberian craton basement. U-Pb zircon dating of the granites yielded an age of 1874 ± 14 Ma. The rocks of the Biryusa massif correspond in chemical composition to normally alkaline and moderately alkaline high-alumina leucogranites. By mineral and petrogeochemical compositions, they are assigned to S-type granites. The low CaO/Na2O ratios (< 0.3), K2O - 5 wt.%, CaO < 1 wt.%, and high Rb/Ba (0.7-1.9) and Rb/Sr (3.9-6.8) ratios indicate that the two-mica granites resulted from the melting of a metapelitic source (possibly, the Archean metasedimentary rocks of the Biryusa block, similar to the granites in £Nd(t) value) in the absence of an additional fluid phase. The granite formation proceeded at 740-800 °C (zircon saturation temperature). The age of the S-type two-mica granites agrees with the estimated ages of I- and A-type granitoids present in the Biryusa block. Altogether, these granitoids form a magmatic belt stretching along the zone of junction of the Biryusa block with the Paleoproterozoic Urik-Iya terrane and Tunguska superterrane. The granitoids are high-temperature rocks, which evidences that they formed within a high-temperature collision structure. It is admitted that the intrusion of granitoids took place within the thickened crust in collision setting at the stage of postcollisional extension in the Paleoproterozoic. This geodynamic setting was the result of the unification of the Neoarchean Biryusa continental block, Paleoproterozoic Urik-Iya terrane, and Archean Tunguska superterrane into the Siberian craton.

Overall petrologic and geochemical data indicate that the early Paleozoic magmatism in the Olkhon area of the Baikal Region exhibits diverse types of granitoids, whose time of formation is estimated at a narrow age interval of 500-465 Ma. This magmatism was responsible for the formation of both autochthonous gneiss-migmatite-granitoid suites (Sharanur complex) and multiphase intrusions (Aya complex) emplaced into the upper horizons of the continental crust. In major-element chemistry, K2O/Na2O values, and rare-element composition the migmatite-plagiogranites and calc-alkaline and subalkaline granitoids of the Sharanur complex are similar to the host gneisses and schists, as they were likely derived from melting of the ancient metamorphic substratum of the Olkhon series. In new isotope-geochemical characteristics (ICP MS method) the Sharanur granitoids are close to the first-phase biotite granites of the Aya massif, whose further geochemical evolution was governed mainly by intrachamber magmatic differentiation leading to the production of second-phase leucogranites enriched in HREE and HFSE (in particular, Ta and Nb) and depleted in Sr, Ba, Eu, Li, and LREE. The origin of the autochthonous and intrusive granitoids is related to early Paleozoic collision events within the Olkhon metamorphic terrane, while the formation of syncollisional granitoids is best explained by both melting of the crust protolith (Sharanur complex) and magmatic differentiation (multiphase Aya intrusion). All mineralogical and geochemical characteristics indicate that these granitoids are distinguished from rare-metal pegmatoid granites and Li-F and Rb-Be-Nb pegmatites, whose vein bodies crosscut the granitoids, and are regarded as middle Paleozoic rocks, which mark the transition to within-plate magmatism in the Baikal Region.

Crystalline and melt inclusions were studied in large (up to 2 cm across) dipyramidal quartz phenocrysts from Miocene dacites in the area of the Rosia Montana Au-Ag deposit in Romania. Data were obtained on the homogenization of fluid inclusions and the composition of crystalline inclusions and glasses in more than 40 melt inclusions, which were analyzed on a electron microprobe. The minerals identified in the crystalline inclusions are plagioclase (An 51–62), orthoclase, micas (biotite and phengite), zircon, magnetite (TiO2 = 2.8 wt %), and Fe sulfide. Two types of the melts were distinguished when studying the glasses of the melt inclusions. Type 1 of the melts is unusual in composition. The average composition of 20 inclusions is as follows (wt %): 76.1 SiO2, 0.39 TiO2, 6.23 Al2O3, 4.61 FeO, 0.09 MnO, 1.64 MgO, 3.04 CaO, 2.79 Na2O, 3.79 K2O (Na2O/K2O = 0.74), 0.07 P2O5, 0.02 Cl. The composition of type 2 of the melts is typical of acid magmas. The average of 23 inclusion analyses is (wt %) 79.3 SiO2, 0.16 TiO2, 10.27 Al2O3, 0.63 FeO, 0.08 MnO, 0.29 MgO, 1.83 CaO, 3.56 Na2O, 2.79 K2O (Na2O/K2O = 1.28), 0.08 P2O5, 0.05 Cl. The compositions of these melts significantly differ in concentrations of Ti, Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, and K. The high analytical totals of the analyses (close to 100 wt %, more specifically 98.9 and 99.0 wt %, respectively) testify that the melts were generally poor in water. Two inclusions of type 1 and two inclusions of type 2 were analyzed on an ion probe, and their analyses show remarkable differences in the concentrations of certain trace elements. These concentrations (in ppm) are for the melts of types 1 and 2, respectively, as follows: 10.0 and 0.69 for Be, 29.3 and 5.7 for B, 6.4 and 1.4 for Cr, 146 and 6.9 for V, 74 and 18 for Cu, 92 and 29 for Rb, 45 and 15 for Zr, 1.7 and 0.6 for Hf, 10.3 and 2.3 for Pb, and 52 and 1.3 for U. The Th/U ratio of these two melt types are also notably different: 0.04 and 0.19 for type 1 and 2.0 and 2.9 for type 2. These data led us to conclude that the magmatic melts were derived from two different sources. Our data on the melts of type 1 testify that the magmatic chamber was contaminated with compositionally unusual crustal rocks (perhaps, sedimentary, metamorphic, or hydrothermal rocks enriched in Si, Fe, Mg, U, and some other components). This can explain the ore-forming specifics of magmatic chambers in the area.
