ABSTRACT The Black Sea contains immense gas accumulations. Exploration of gas accumulations is geologically and economically important because migration of methane in sediments may cause massive slope failures and the methane seeps may indicate deeper hydrocarbon reservoirs. Human activity both in and on the seafloor (oil industry) and natural activity (earthquakes, cyclones) trigger mechanisms for seafloor failure and gas release that may have a local and possibly global environmental impact. Recently, sonar and high‐resolution seismic surveys were carried out to obtain information about the effects of gas and gas‐filled sediments throughout the Turkish margin of the Eastern Black Sea, and shallow gas was detected on the subbottom profiler records. It continues about 25–65 m below the sea floor and is marked by bright and cloudy spots, sometimes pockmarks and acoustic voids. The lower section of the Turkish shelf is an extensive pockmarked plateau. The pockmarks are seen as circular structures with high backscattering on the sonar records.  相似文献

Six closely spaced sediment cores taken below the carbonate compensation depth penetrated fine silty muds and entered sandy sediment at 10–12 m below the seafloor. Foraminiferal assemblages and δ8O analyses on planktonic foraminifera indicated that the surface muds down to 2 m are Holocene and derived from local promontories above the CCD. Below these sediments are about 6 m of clays deposited during the late Wisconsin. These are unfossiliferous and have a possible northern source suggested by the higher chlorite content. Sandy sediments below 9 m in the cores contain well preserved benthic foraminifera from the Scotian Shelf. Glacial δ18O values on planktonic tests indicate the sandy sediments are most likely of latest Wisconsin age. Thus during the recent interglacial, the sand fraction of the southern Sohm Abyssal Plain sediments is mostly locally derived, but during glacial periods the sediments have a distant northern source containing quartz sand that was initially deposited on the Scotian Shelf 1,500 km to the north.  相似文献

Gas hydrate is exposed on the sea floor and is buried in shallow sediments in the off-Joetsu area at the eastern margin of the Sea of Japan. Sediment cores recovered from topographic highs of the Joetsu Knoll and Umitaka Spur show pockmarks and mounds formed by gas hydrate dissociation, but those from the Un-named ridge have no such topographic features. All topographic highs and pockmarks mainly comprise bioturbated layers interbedded with thinly laminated (TL) layers, which are common Sea of Japan sediments. Recovered sediments are, however, mostly disturbed by submarine landslides, showing tilted horizons, faults, slump folds, and breccia, except that from the Un-named ridge. The timing of events is well constrained by identification of the number of TL layers in some sediment cores. Landslides occurred both during the cold glacial period of the late MIS3 to the last glacial maximum (LGM) and during the warm interglacial period of the post-LGM. All were caused by the explosive rise of gas hydrate formed at very shallow depths of the sea bottom by the supply of gas from the depth of the gas hydrate stability zone through gas chimney passages developed under the pockmarks. Seismic activity demands consideration as a factor because the off-Joetsu area is tectonically active.  相似文献

Surface sediments from the Outer Continental Shelf of Alaska were analyzed for hydrocarbons as part of an environmental survey sponsored by NOAA/BLM. Sediments were collected from the proposed oil lease areas of Beaufort Sea, southeastern Bering Sea, Norton Sound, Navarin Basin, Gulf of Alaska, Kodiak Shelf and lower Cook Inlet. Data on normal and branched alkanes and di- and triterpenoids from capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/ MS) indicate that the area displays little evidence of petroleum hydrocarbons (i.e., seeps) except at a few isolated stations. Beaufort Sea sediments have the highest hydrocarbon budget, whereas Kodiak Shelf sediments have the lowest. The molecular markers of the hydrocarbons are of a mixed marine autochthonous and terrestrial allochthonous origin. Norton Sound and Cook Inlet sediments contain the highest levels of terrigenous lipids and Kodiak Shelf the lowest. The abundance of alkenes implies that relatively low oxidizing conditions exist in some of the depositional areas studied, suggesting that extraneous petroleum hydrocarbons introduced into these sediments would be expected to have a relatively long residence time. The distribution of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) is complex and shows a pyrolytic origin. The data on perylene strongly favor the hypothesis that it is “performed” from terrigenous precursors and transported into the marine environment with no apparent in situ generation. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons of diagenetic origin are probably dominant in Gulf of Alaska and Kodiak Shelf sediments.Two stations, north of Kalgin Island, in lower Cook Inlet and one in southeastern Bering Sea show typical weathered petroleum distribution of n-alkanes and triterpenoids. Probable pathways of transport and fate of petroleum hydrocarbons in case of an oil spill are also briefly discussed.  相似文献

The importance of the Baffin-Labrador region is explained in terms of the channelling through this area of the mass flux of meltwater from the Laurentide Ice Sheet and the probable effects of this on the thermohaline circulation of the North Atlantic. The chronology of glaciation and deglaciation in the region is summarised. Reference is made to recent marine records from the Baffin Shelf. Isotopic changes recorded in foraminiferal assemblages obtained from marine sediments in the Baffin Shelf-Labrador Sea area indicate the timing and possible magnitude of meltwater fluxes during the period 14.0-11.0 ka BP.  相似文献

南海北部陆坡工程地质环境复杂,并分布有大量油气资源,对该区海底沉积物的物理力学性质的研究是不可缺少的研究工作。本文利用2015年6月于"实验3"号科考船南海北部航次获得的箱式样和柱状样样品,在室内进行了含水率、天然密度、比重、微型扭力十字板以及微型贯入试验和压缩试验,获得了该处沉积物的粒度分布特征及物理力学性质参数。研究表明,南海北陆坡架表层沉积物类型以粉砂质黏土和黏土质粉砂为主,具有较高的含水率和较低的湿密度,抗剪强度、贯入阻力、压缩性等力学性质较差。沉积物的各项土工参数随深度呈现一定规律性的变化,且沉积环境、粒度成分和沉积年代等因素对其存在一定影响。  相似文献

Detailed reviews of multichannel seismic reflection, sparker, chirp and multibeam data that were collected on the southern Marmara Sea shelf revealed various shallow gas indicators and related sedimentary structures, including enhanced reflections, seismic chimneys, acoustic blanking, bright spots, pockmarks, mound-like features and seeps. Seismic attribute analyses were applied to characterise the existence of gas-bearing sediments. The distribution of shallow gas indicators provides important insights into their origin and the geological factors that control them. Prominent gas accumulations and seeps are observed along the profiles that cross the branches of the central segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone, which indicates that the gas seeps are controlled by active faulting. This indicates that the faults act as conduits through the sedimentary column. The dense occurrences of gas directly off the river mouths along the shallow bays provide clues about the organic-rich carbon content of the sediments and biogenic methane generation. In some areas, the gas-related acoustic anomalies are mostly located in the upper sediments below the marine unit, which indicates that the gas emissions in these areas were terminated as a result of the increased overburden pressure after the Holocene sea level rise and the deposition of the marine unit.  相似文献

As the majority of the data on Quaternary sediments from the North Sea Basin are seismostratigraphical, we analysed the Elsterian Swarte Bank Formation, the Late Saalian Fisher Formation and the Late Weichselian (Dimlington Stadial) Bolders Bank Formation in order to determine genesis and provenance. The Swarte Bank Formation is a subglacial till containing palynomorphs from the Moray Forth and the northeastern North Sea, and metamorphic heavy minerals from the Scottish Highlands. The Fisher Formation was sampled from the northern and central North Sea. In the north, it is interpreted as a subglacial till, with glaciomarine sediments cropping out further south. These sediments exhibit a provenance signature consistent with the Midland Valley of Scotland, the Eocene of the North Sea Basin, the Grampian Highlands and northeast Scotland. The Bolders Bank Formation is a subglacial till containing palynomorphs from the Midland Valley of Scotland, northern Britain, and a metamorphic heavy‐mineral suite indicative of the Grampian Highlands, Southern Uplands and northeast Scotland. These data demonstrate that there was repeated glaciation of the North Sea Basin during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, with ice sheets originating in northern Scotland. Earlier studies have shown that an unusual C27 triterpane is abundant in sediments from the Norwegian Continental Shelf and the North Sea. This compound was assigned the tentative structures 24,28,30-trisnormoretane or 25,28,30-trisnormoretane, but we have now shown from detailed retention time measurements and a reinterpretation of the mass spectral data that its correct structure is 17α(H),18α (H),21β(H)-25,28,30-trisnorhopane. Two other triterpanes, 25,28,30-trisnormoretane and 28,30-bisnormoretane, have also been identified as minor constituents of extracts of sediments from the North Sea. Possible origins for these compounds are discussed.  相似文献

The sedimentary cover section of the North Kara Shelf had been subdivided based on extensive seismic data, and seismic correlation was carried out. The predominant role of Upper Riphean-Middle Paleozoic rocks has been corroborated. A series of relatively deepwater basins filled with primarily terrigenous fly-schoid rocks up to 7–9 km in thickness existed in the Late Riphean-Vendian at the place of the shelf. In the Cambrian, isolated basins merged into a wide and shallow-water basin as a result of the Baikalian reactivation in southeast Severnaya Zemlya and probably in Taimyr. After the pre-Ordovician hiatus, a vast sedimentation basin with a regressive section was formed on the shelf from Ordovician to Late Devonian. Shallow-water marine and near-shore carbonate and carbonate-terrigenous sequences accumulated in this basin and gave way to continental and less frequent near-shore, marine, variegated, and red beds in the Devonian. The thickness of the Ordovician-Devonian sequence reaches 6 km. Since the Mid-Carboniferous, block emergence and deep erosion of Ordovician-Devonian complexes have occurred in the north Kara shelf as a result of Hercynian events in northern Taimyr, Severnaya Zemlya, and in the southern Kara Sea. No Permian-Triassic rifts existed on the North Kara Shelf. At that time, the shelf was an area of erosion. The thickness of the Middle Carboniferous-Cretaceous sequence was insignificant and gradually increased toward Barents Sea troughs. The newly formed Svyataya Anna and Voronin troughs arose due to opening of the Eurasia Basin of the Arctic Ocean. The terrane concept has been subjected to criticism. The available data show that a large epi-Grenvillian continental block existed, and the North Kara region was part of it. Collision of the northern continent with the Paleosiberian Platform in the Late Paleozoic resulted in the formation of the Hercynian fold arc to the south of the North Kara Shelf, and an inverted orogenic arch arose at the place of shelf basin. The individual geological features that distinguish the North Kara Shelf from the Barents Sea troughs and the South Kara Syneclise are emphasized. The ancient pre-Riphean basement, a system of Late Riphean-Vendian relatively deepwater troughs and basins, Hercynian tectonic inversion, deep erosion of the most uplifted part of the arch, and significant block motions are the distinguishing features of the North Kara Shelf.  相似文献

Lake Rotoiti formed 11 850–20 000 years ago when lava flows dammed the drainage system through the Okataina caldera, one of the major rhyolitic centres of the intracontinental, back-arc, Taupo Volcanic Zone of North Island, New Zealand. The lake morphology reflects this complex origin, with remnants of the old caldera rim, the lava dam and relict river system being preserved. High resolution seismic reflection profiles (7 kHz) show the drowned river system channelled inflowing water into the lake basin, scouring and depositing sediments and maintaining an active sublacustrine channel in the former river valley. Airfall tephras are preserved in lake sediments. The tephrachronology, established from the surrounding catchments, can be correlated with the siesmic stratigraphy for eight major eruptions over the last 11 850 years. Hydrothermal fields underlying the lake generate gaseous sediments which mask seismic penetration. This is indistinguishable from seismic masking caused by biogenic gas accumulation within the sediments. Venting of hydrothermal gases at the surface creates pockmarks. From the seismic stratigraphy beneath pockmarks seven stages of pockmark genesis have been identified which show pockmarks grow, decay, migrate and persist over several thousand years.  相似文献

The distributions of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd and Co have been determined in a section across the Scotian Shelf into the Atlantic Slope water. Significant differences in concentration exist for most of the trace metals between the four water masses in the section. Depletions of trace metal concentration in the highly productive Atlantic Slope water relative to the underlying Central Atlantic water are thought to be due to biological activity.The distributions of Fe and Mn are strongly related to the distribution of suspended particulate matter. The concentrations of Fe and Mn, extracted from the suspended matter on the Scotian Shelf, are considerably higher than those in the non-detrital fraction of the underlying sediments. This suggests that post-depositional changes cause the loss of both elements from the non-detrital fraction of the particles. Whereas Mn shows major nearshore increases in concentration related to continental runoff, nearshore Fe concentrations are largely controlled by particulate matter distribution. Continental runoff does not appear to have much influence upon the distributions of the other trace metals.  相似文献

Marine gas hydrate and cold-seep systems, which maintain a large amount of methane in the seabed, may critically impact the geochemical and ecological characteristics of the deep-sea sedimentary environment. However, it remains unclear whether marine sediments associated with gas hydrate harbor novel microbial communities that are distinct from those from typical marine sediments. In this study, microbial community structures thriving in sediments associated with and without gas hydrate in the eastern Japan Sea were characterized by 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses. Uncultivated bacterial lineages of candidate division JS1 and a novel group NT-B2 were dominant in the sediments from gas hydrate-associated sites. Whereas, microbial populations from sites not associated with gas hydrate were mainly composed of Bacteroidetes, Nitrospirales, Chlamydiales, Chlorobiales, and yet-uncultured bacterial lineages of OD1 and TM06. The good correlation between the dominance of JS1 and NT-B2 and the association of gas hydrate could be attributed to the supply of more energetically favorable energy sources in gas-rich fluids from the deep subsurface than refractory organic matter of terrigenous and diatomaceous origin.  相似文献

Recent interpretation of seismic sections and free-air gravity anomalies in offshore northern Taiwan reveals that the southern Taiwan–Sinzi Folded Zone began to form in late Middle Miocene, though it was mainly constructed in the Late Pliocene with strong reverse faulting and folding. Two westward progradational sequences were deposited in the shelf basin with sediments supplied from the southern Taiwan–Sinzi Folded Zone and the southern Ryukyu Arc. These two structures are displaced by several northwest-striking dextral strike–slip faults that were active in the early Quaternary when the clockwise-rotated southern Ryukyu Arc and the folded southern Taiwan–Sinzi Folded Zone were broken. It is believed that recent extension in the southern Okinawa Trough started in the early Quaternary because uplift on the southern Taiwan–Sinzi Folded Zone continued to latest Pliocene–early Quaternary. Paleogene–Miocene sediments of the East China Sea Shelf in the western part of the southern Okinawa Trough Basin are interpreted to indicate that the East China Sea Shelf Basin extended to the east of the southern Taiwan–Sinzi Folded Zone.  相似文献

晚更新世末期中国陆架的古环境与北美洲和欧洲都不相同,前者发育了劳伦泰德冰原,后者出现了斯堪狄纳维亚冰原;亚洲大陆不但未生成大陆冰源,反而出现规模更大、范围更广的沙漠和黄土分布区(也包括中国陆架的大部分地区)。最后冰期结束以后,北美和欧洲的大陆冰盖逐渐融化,给北美和欧洲的陆架提供足够的水源,当地地壳的回弹又加大了河流的冲刷能力,而一旦大陆冰原的冰完全消融以后,这些通过和流入陆架的河流,又失去了径流。全新世海侵发生以后,在那里的陆架区,自然会留下许多埋藏古河道的遗迹。中国陆架沉积环境(特别是北方陆架区)则以干旱和寒冷为特征。在冰期最盛时的中国陆架不仅得不到大陆冰盖的保护,出露了的陆架反而要遭受风暴的吹蚀作用。所以风力吹蚀作用是晚更新世末期中国陆架的基本动力。因此,最后冰期最盛时的中国陆架区发生沙漠化沉积及其衍生沉积是其最重要特征,据目前所知:陆架沙漠化的主要沉积类型有(1)漫长的风蚀基面;(2)大面积的混杂堆积;(3)“休止角型”沉积结构;和(4)典型的埋藏沙丘沉积。  相似文献

南海北部陆坡区存在着有利天然气水合物的成藏条件,综合调查及钻探结果揭示南海北部陆坡区蕴藏着丰富的天然气水合物资源,天然气水合物多发育在构造活动复杂地区,同时也是灾害地质因素高发区,潜在的灾害地质因素对水合物的赋存及商业开发是极大的威胁。本文基于广州海洋地质调查局多年来在南海北部天然气水合物发育区采集的大量2D、3D、浅地层剖面及多波束测深资料对南海北部水合物发育区进行海底灾害地质研究,对研究区地形地貌特征、灾害地质因素类型、特征、成因及分布特征进行了综合分析,同时阐述了灾害地质因素与水合物的形成与分解之间的关系,研究结果对南海北部陆坡区天然气水合物区成矿预测、试采井布置及未来灾害风险评价提供了基础数据和决策依据。  相似文献

Surface sediments from 20 stations on the Scotian Shelf, collected on a transect from Halifax to Emerald Bank and around Sable Island, have been analyzed for hydrocarbon content and composition by gas chromatography and fluorescence spectrophotometry. Some samples were taken near abandoned exploratory drilling sites in the Sable Island area. Hydrocarbons appear to be mainly derived from biogenic terrestrial sources as evidenced by an inverse correlation of concentration with increasing distance from the mainland and a strong odd carbon preference in the n-alkanes. Contribution from petroleum sources, while minor, was most noticeable between Halifax and Emerald Bank. There is also evidence that the hydrocarbon composition at abandoned exploratory drilling sites has been slightly altered.  相似文献

通过对南海陆坡地区中新世以来沉积物的一些属性和特征的研究,获得了下面的初步认识:(1)南海陆坡有几个沉积速率较高的地区, 如东沙一带、西沙海槽、中建南地区,以及南沙西南部和西北部(曾母、万安盆地);(2)大洋钻探钻井资料的研究表明,中新世与早上新世为高碳酸盐比值的低速堆积期,而近200万a以来为低碳酸盐比值的高速堆积期,上新世晚期至全新世沉积物以粘土质粉砂和粉砂质粘土为最主要成分;(3)南海不同时期的沉积速率不同,全新世为沉积速率最高的时期,其次为更新世;上新世和中新世为沉积速率较低的时期。南海利于气体水合物存藏的沉积可能为全新世和更新世的沉积;(4)对南海晚第四纪以来沉积物的综合研究表明南海陆坡的A区(东沙附近)、B区(西沙海槽)、D区(南海西部、越南以东)等地区可能利于气体水合物的形成和分布;而E区(南沙西南部)、F区(南沙中上部)和G区(南沙海槽)则是气体水合物调查值得关注的地区。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Understanding fluid flow structures in a rifted basin may enhance our knowledge of their origination and evolution. Through geochemical analysis and seismic interpretation, different fluid flow features are identified in the central depression of Qiongdongnan basin, northern South China Sea. These structures include mud diapir, gas chimney, hydrothermal pipes, faults, blowout pipes, and associated extrusions. Mud diapirs are primarily located on the slope belts, whereas gas chimneys are on the basement highs in the southwest of the study area. Their distribution appears closely controlled by tectonic stress field and overpressure, the later is caused by hydrocarbon generation and compaction disequilibrium. High sediment overloading, weak post-rift tectonic activity, and high average geothermal gradient may contribute to the compaction disequilibrium. The occurrence of gas chimneys on the basement high suggests that lateral transportation and relief of overpressure is a significant factor. Distribution of broad hydrothermal pipes is related with the thinning continental crust and pre-existing boundary faults in the central depression. They are probably attributed to intruded sills dissolution and were caused by hydrothermal fluids vertically. Geochemical data from gas reservoirs analysis indicates that mud diapirs and gas chimneys are critical pathways for thermogenic gases, whereas hydrothermal pipes and part of the faults may act as pathways of both thermogenic and inorganic gases. The blowout pipes mainly occur in the northwestern central depression near the continental slope, where fluid flows ascend gradually from a series of Pliocene-current prograding wedge-formed units with a hydraulic fracture in shallow. Hundreds of seafloor pockmarks and mounds associated with blowout pipes located above the NE-SW elongated Pliocene-Quaternary slope-break belts. These extrusive structures indicate that fluids ascend through blowout pipes and were expelled at the present seabed. Our results indicate that fluid flow structures are probably responsible for fluid activities and must be taken into account when assessing the hydrocarbon potential, geologic hazard, and benthic ecosystem.  相似文献

沟槽及其成因是近年来沉积学和古海洋学的研究热点。本研究基于珠江口盆地荔湾凹陷内的高精度三维地震资料,在研究区早中新世地层中首次识别出延伸千米的沟槽。这些沟槽形成时研究区位于远离陆架坡折的深水盆地,其走向大致平行于早中新世南海北部陆架坡折走向,可细分为4个亚区,形态呈直线形、拱形或似波痕状,几何学参数在不同分区各有特点。另外,在部分沟槽底部具有规模较大的条带状高振幅异常,可能对应粗粒沉积或富含天然气。根据沟槽特征推测其成因可能与盆内广布的中层水环流影响下的底流活动有关。古地貌控制下的早中新世古底流,通过其水体对海底产生侵蚀进而形成侵蚀沟槽。此研究不仅有助于南海北部超深水区的油气勘探,同时可为南海早中新世古海洋学研究提供新证据。  相似文献
