Detrital zircons are important proxies for crustal provenance and have been widely used in tracing source characteristics and continental reconstructions. Southern Peninsular India constituted the central segment of the late Neoproterozoic supercontinent Gondwana and is composed of crustal blocks ranging in age from Mesoarchean to late Neoproterozoic–Cambrian. Here we investigate detrital zircon grains from a suite of quartzites accreted along the southern part of the Madurai Block. Our LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating reveals multiple populations of magmatic zircons, among which the oldest group ranges in age from Mesoarchean to Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2980–1670 Ma, with peaks at 2900–2800 Ma, 2700–2600 Ma, 2500–2300 Ma, 2100–2000 Ma). Zircons in two samples show magmatic zircons with dominantly Neoproterozoic (950–550 Ma) ages. The metamorphic zircons from the quartzites define ages in the range of 580–500 Ma, correlating with the timing of metamorphism reported from the adjacent Trivandrum Block as well as from other adjacent crustal fragments within the Gondwana assembly. The zircon trace element data are mostly characterized by LREE depletion and HREE enrichment, positive Ce, Sm anomalies and negative Eu, Pr, Nd anomalies. The Mesoarchean to Neoproterozoic age range and the contrasting petrogenetic features as indicated from zircon chemistry suggest that the detritus were sourced from multiple provenances involving a range of lithologies of varying ages. Since the exposed basement of the southern Madurai Block is largely composed of Neoproterozoic orthogneisses, the data presented in our study indicate derivation of the detritus from distal source regions implying an open ocean environment. Samples carrying exclusive Neoproterozoic detrital zircon population in the absence of older zircons suggest proximal sources in the southern Madurai Block. Our results suggest that a branch of the Mozambique ocean might have separated the southern Madurai Block to the north and the Nagercoil Block to the south, with the metasediments of the khondalite belt in Trivandrum Block marking the zone of ocean closure, part of which were accreted onto the southern Madurai Block during the collisional amalgamation of the Gondwana supercontinent in latest Neoproterozoic–Cambrian.

We report here U–Pb electron microprobe ages from zircon and monazite associated with corundum- and sapphirine-bearing granulite facies rocks of Lachmanapatti, Sengal, Sakkarakkottai and Mettanganam in the Palghat–Cauvery shear zone system and Ganguvarpatti in the northern Madurai Block of southern India. Mineral assemblages and petrologic characteristics of granulite facies assemblages in all these localities indicate extreme crustal metamorphism under ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) conditions. Zircon cores from Lachmanapatti range from 3200 to 2300 Ma with a peak at 2420 Ma, while those from Mettanganam show 2300 Ma peak. Younger zircons with peak ages of 2100 and 830 Ma are displayed by the UHT granulites of Sengal and Ganguvarpatti, although detrital grains with 2000 Ma ages are also present. The Late Archaean-aged cores are mantled by variable rims of Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic ages in most cases. Zircon cores from Ganguvarpatti range from 2279 to 749 Ma and are interpreted to reflect multiple age sources. The oldest cores are surrounded by Palaeoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic rims, and finally mantled by Neoproterozoic overgrowths. In contrast, monazites from these localities define peak ages of between 550 and 520 Ma, with an exception of a peak at 590 Ma for the Lachmanapatti rocks. The outermost rims of monazite grains show spot ages in the range of 510–450 Ma.While the zircon populations in these rocks suggest multiple sources of Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic age, the monazite data are interpreted to date the timing of ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism in southern India as latest Neoproterozoic to Cambrian in both the Palghat–Cauvery shear zone system and the northern Madurai Block. The data illustrate the extent of Neoproterozoic/Cambrian metamorphism as India joined the Gondwana amalgam at the dawn of the Cambrian.

The Anakie Metamorphic Group is a complexly deformed, dominantly metasedimentary succession in central Queensland. Metamorphic cooling is constrained to ca 500 Ma by previously published K–Ar ages. Detrital‐zircon SHRIMP U–Pb ages from three samples of greenschist facies quartz‐rich psammites (Bathampton Metamorphics), west of Clermont, are predominantly in the age range 1300–1000 Ma (65–75%). They show that a Grenville‐aged orogenic belt must have existed in northeastern Australia, which is consistent with the discovery of a potential Grenville source farther north. The youngest detrital zircons in these samples are ca 580 Ma, indicating that deposition may have been as old as latest Neoproterozoic. Two samples have been analysed from amphibolite facies pelitic schist from the western part of the inlier (Wynyard Metamorphics). One sample contains detrital monazite with two age components of ca 580–570 Ma and ca 540 Ma. The other sample only has detrital zircons with the youngest component between 510 Ma and 700 Ma (Pacific‐Gondwana component), which is consistent with a Middle Cambrian age for these rocks. These zircons were probably derived from igneous activity associated with rifting events along the Gondwanan passive margin. These constraints confirm correlation of the Anakie Metamorphic Group with latest Neoproterozoic ‐ Cambrian units in the Adelaide Fold Belt of South Australia and the Wonominta Block of western New South Wales.

Early Paleozoic evolution of the northern Gondwana margin is interpreted from integrated in situ U-Pb and Hf-isotope analyses on detrital zircons that constrain depositional ages and provenance of the Lancang Group, previously assigned to the Simao Block, and the Mengtong and Mengdingjie groups of the Baoshan Block. A meta-felsic volcanic rock from the Mengtong Group yields a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 462 ± 2 Ma. The depositional age for the previously inferred Neoproterozoic Lancang and Mengtong groups is re-interpreted as Early Paleozoic based on youngest detrital zircons and meta-volcanic age. Detrital U-Pb zircon analyses from the Baoshan Block define three distinctive age peaks at older Grenvillian (1200–1060 Ma), younger Grenvillian (~ 960 Ma) and Pan-African (650–500 Ma), with εHf(t) values for each group similar to coeval detrital zircons from western Australia and northern India. This suggests that the Baoshan Block was situated in the transitional zone between northeast Greater India and northwest Australia on the Gondwana margin and received detritus from both these cratons. The Lancang Group yields a very similar detrital zircon age spectrum to that of the Baoshan Block but contrasts with that for the Simao Block. This suggests that the Lancang Group is underlain by a separate Lancang Block. Similar detrital zircon age spectra suggest that the Baoshan Block and the Lancang Block share common sources and that they were situated close to one another along the northern margin of East Gondwana during the Early Paleozoic. The new detrital zircon data in combination with previously published data for East Gondwana margin blocks suggests the Early Paleozoic Proto-Tethys represents a narrow ocean basin separating an “Asian Hun superterrane” (North China, South China, Tarim, Indochina and North Qiangtang blocks) from the northern margin of Gondwana during the Late Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic. The Proto-Tethys closed in the Silurian at ca. 440–420 Ma when this “Asian Hun superterrane” collided with the northern Gondwana margin. Subsequently, the Lancang Block is interpreted to have separated from the Baoshan Block during the Early Devonian when the Paleo-Tethys opened as a back-arc basin.

In an attempt to elucidate the pre-Variscan evolution history of the various geological units in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Massif, we have analysed zircons from 12 rocks (mainly orthogneisses) by means of SHRIMP, conventional multi-grain and single-grain U–Pb isotope-dilution/mass-spectrometry. Two of the orthogneisses studied represent Cadomian metagranitoids that formed at ca. 610 Ma (Spitz gneiss) and ca. 580 Ma (Bittesch gneiss). A metagranite from the Thaya batholith also gave a Cadomian zircon age (567±5 Ma). Traces of Neoproterozoic zircon growth were also identified in several other samples, underlining the great importance of the Cadomian orogeny for the evolution of crust in the southern Bohemian Massif. However, important magmatic events also occurred in the Early Palaeozoic. A sample of the Gföhl gneiss was recognised as a 488±6 Ma-old granite. A tonalite gneiss from the realm of the South Bohemian batholith was dated at 456±3 Ma, and zircon cores in a Moldanubian metagranitic granulite gave similar ages of 440–450 Ma. This Ordovician phase of magmatism in the Moldanubian unit is tentatively interpreted as related to the rifting and drift of South Armorica from the African Gondwana margin. The oldest inherited zircons, in a migmatite from the South Bohemian batholith, yielded an age of ca. 2.6 Ga, and many zircon cores in both Moravian and Moldanubian meta-granitoid rocks gave ages around 2.0 Ga. However, rocks from the Moldanubian unit show a striking lack of zircon ages between 1.8 and 1.0 Ga, reflecting an ancestry from Armorica and the North African part of Gondwana, respectively, whereas the Moravian Bittesch gneiss contains many inherited zircons with Mesoproterozoic and Early Palaeoproterozoic ages of ca. 1.2, 1.5 and 1.65–1.8 Ga, indicating a derivation from the South American part of Gondwana.

We present new U–Pb isotopic age data for detrital zircons from 16 deformed sandstones of the Ross Supergroup in north Victoria Land, Antarctica. Zircon U/Th ratios primarily point to dominantly igneous parent rocks with subordinate contributions from metamorphic sources. Comparative analysis of detrital zircon age populations indicates that inboard stratigraphic successions (Wilson Terrane) and those located outboard of the East Antarctic craton (the Bowers and Robertson Bay terranes) have similar ~ 1200–950 Ma (Mesoproterozoic–Neoproterozoic) and ~ 700–490 Ma (late Neoproterozoic–Cambrian, Furongian) age populations. The affinity of the age populations of the sandstones to each other, as well as Gondwana sources and Pacific-Gondwana marginal stratigraphic belts, challenges the notion that the outboard successions form exotic terranes that docked with Gondwana during the Ross orogeny and instead places the terranes in proximity to each other and within the peri-Gondwana realm during the late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian. The cumulative zircon age suite from north Victoria Land yields a polymodal age spectra with a younger, primary 700–480 Ma age population that peaks at ~ 580 Ma. Cumulative analysis of zircons with elevated U/Th ratios (> 20) indicating metamorphic heritage yield ~ 657–532 Ma age probability peaks, which overlap with the younger dominantly igneous zircon population. The data are interpreted to give important new evidence that is consistent with ongoing convergent arc magmatism by ~ 626 Ma, which provided the dominant zircon-rich igneous rocks and subordinate metamorphic rocks. Maximum depositional ages as young as ~ 493–481 Ma yielded by deformed sequences in the outboard Bowers and Robertson Bay terrane samples provide new support for late Cambrian to Ordovician deformation in outboard sectors of the orogen, consistent with tectonic models that call for cyclic phases of contraction along the north Victoria Land sector of the Ross–Delamerian orogen.

The provenance of Neoproterozoic to Early Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in the Sierras Pampeanas has been established using U–Pb SHRIMP age determination of detrital zircons in twelve metasedimentary samples, with supplementary Hf and O isotope analyses of selected samples. The detrital zircon age patterns show that the western and eastern sectors of the Sierras Pampeanas are derived from different sources, and were juxtaposed during the Early Cambrian ‘Pampean’ collision orogeny, thus defining initiation of the supercontinent stage of southwestern Gondwana. The Western Sierras Pampeanas (WSP), which extend northwards to the southern Puna (Antofalla) and the Arequipa Massif (Peru), constitute a single large continental basement of Paleoproterozoic age — the MARA block — that was reworked during the Grenvillian orogeny. The MARA block probably extends eastwards to include the Río Apa block (southern Brazil), but in this case without a Mesoproterozoic overprint. Detrital zircons from the WSP and Antofalla yield age peaks between 1330 and 1030 Ma, remarkably similar to the range of ages in the Grenville province of eastern Laurentia. The WSP Neoproterozoic sedimentary cover to this basement shows the same 1330–1030 component, but also includes important 1430–1380 Ma zircons whose juvenile Hf and O isotopic signatures strongly suggest derivation from the Grenville and the Southern Granite–Rhyolite provinces of eastern Laurentia. In contrast the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas metasedimentary rocks have a typically bimodal detrital zircon pattern with peaks at ca. 1000 and 600 Ma, which respectively indicate sources in the Natal–Namaqua belt and the East African orogen and/or the Dom Feliciano belt of SE Brazil and Uruguay. Sedimentary rocks in the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas and Patagonia deposited during the Late Early Cambrian–Early Ordovician interval, after the Pampean orogeny, have detrital patterns common to many sectors along the Terra Australis orogen, reflecting increasingly dominant input to the Paleozoic basins from the Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian orogenic belts of the Gondwana margin.

In France, the Devonian–Carboniferous Variscan orogeny developed at the expense of continental crust belonging to the northern margin of Gondwana. A Visean–Serpukhovian crustal melting has been recently documented in several massifs. However, in the Montagne Noire of the Variscan French Massif Central, which is the largest area involved in this partial melting episode, the age of migmatization was not clearly settled. Eleven U–Th–Pbtot. ages on monazite and three U–Pb ages on associated zircon are reported from migmatites (La Salvetat, Ourtigas), anatectic granitoids (Laouzas, Montalet) and post-migmatitic granites (Anglès, Vialais, Soulié) from the Montagne Noire Axial Zone are presented here for the first time. Migmatization and emplacement of anatectic granitoids took place around 333–326 Ma (Visean) and late granitoids emplaced around 325–318 Ma (Serpukhovian). Inherited zircons and monazite date the orthogneiss source rock of the Late Visean melts between 560 Ma and 480 Ma. In migmatites and anatectic granites, inherited crystals dominate the zircon populations. The migmatitization is the middle crust expression of a pervasive Visean crustal melting event also represented by the “Tufs anthracifères” volcanism in the northern Massif Central. This crustal melting is widespread in the French Variscan belt, though it is restricted to the upper plate of the collision belt. A mantle input appears as a likely mechanism to release the heat necessary to trigger the melting of the Variscan middle crust at a continental scale.

The Yunkai Terrane is one of the most important pre-Devonian areas of metamorphosed supracrustal and granitic basement rocks in the Cathaysia Block of South China. The supracrustal rocks are mainly schist, slate and phyllite, with local paragneiss, granulite, amphibolite and marble, with metamorphic grades ranging from greenschist to granulite facies. Largely on the basis of metamorphic grade, they were previously divided into the Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic Gaozhou Complex, the early Neoproterozoic Yunkai ‘Group’ and early Palaeozoic sediments. Granitic rocks were considered to be Meso- and Neoproterozoic, or early Palaeozoic in age. In this study, four meta-sedimentary rock samples, two each from the Yunkai ‘Group’ and Gaozhou Complex, together with three granite samples, record metamorphic and magmatic zircon ages of 443–430 Ma (Silurian), with many inherited and detrital zircons with the ages mainly ranging from 1.1 to 0.8 Ga, although zircons with Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic ages have also been identified in several of the samples. A high-grade sillimanite–garnet–cordierite gneiss contains 242 Ma metamorphic zircons, as well as 440 Ma ones. Three of the meta-sedimentary rocks show large variations in major element compositions, but have similar REE patterns, and have tDM model ages of 2.17–1.91 Ga and εNd (440 Ma) values of −13.4 to −10.0. Granites range in composition from monzogranite to syenogranite and record tDM model ages of 2.13–1.42 Ga and εNd (440 Ma) values of −8.4 to −1.2. It is concluded that the Yunkai ‘Group’ and Gaozhou Complex formed coevally in the late Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic, probably at the same time as weakly to un-metamorphosed early Palaeozoic sediments in the area. Based on the detrital zircon population, the source area contained Meso- to Neoproterozoic rocks, with some Archaean material. Palaeozoic tectonothermal events and zircon growth in the Yunkai Terrane can be correlated with events of similar age and character known throughout the Cathaysia Block. The lack of evidence for Palaeo- and Mesoproterozoic rocks at Yunkai, as stated in earlier publications, means that revision of the basement geology of Cathaysia is necessary.
