A paper recently published by Bartelt and Buser (hereafter identified as “the authors”) aims to clarify relationships between granular dilatancy and dispersive pressure and to question the effective stress principle and its application to shallow granular avalanches (Bartelt and Buser in Act Geotech 11:549–557, 2). The paper also criticizes our own recent work, which utilizes the concepts of evolving dilatancy and effective stress to model the initiation and dynamics of water-saturated landslides and debris flows. Here we first explain why we largely agree with the authors’ views of dilatancy and dispersive pressure as they apply to depth-integrated granular avalanche models, and why we disagree with their views of effective stress and pore-fluid pressure. We conclude by explaining why the authors’ characterization of our recently developed D-Claw model is inaccurate.  相似文献

A paper recently published by Camargo et al. (Acta Geotech 11(6):1369–1383, 2016) (hereafter identified as “the authors”) presented the numerical limit analysis method (NLA) to compute the safety factor and collapse mechanism of three-dimensional (3D) slopes. For NLA, the authors employed the discrete three-dimensional lower bound formulation with pore water pressure consideration and Drucker–Prager yield criterion, and cast a slope problem as a second-order conic programming problem. The developed program was implemented in MATLAB and validated through three examples of slope problems, and was applied to solve a large-scale 3D slope problem of a failure case study. The discussion of this article focuses on the formulation of the developed 3D NLA and static admissibility of stress field solutions obtained from NLA.  相似文献

The authors (Lloret-Cabot et al. in Acta Geotech 1–23, 2017) applied the glasgow coupled model (GCM), originally proposed by Wheeler et al. (Géotechnique 53(1):41–54, 2003), to the simulation of several experimental tests that involve transition between saturated and unsaturated states. The authors show qualitatively, but not quantitatively, predictions of GCM for shrinkage during air drying of normally consolidated samples (Fig. 13) under low mechanical stress conditions, without presenting the material parameters. The discussers, who have worked with GCM to model multilayer deposition of tailings/soft soils (Qi in Numerical investigation for slope stability of expansive soils and large strain consolidation of soft soils. Doctoral dissertation, University of Ottawa, 2017; Qi et al. in J Geotech Geoenviron Eng 143(7):04017018, 2017, Qi et al. J Geotech Geoenviron Eng 143(7):04017019, 2017), have made quantitative predictions of similar cases. Satisfactory simulations of such cases using GCM are sensitive to the selection of the coupling parameters k1 and k2. By considering an alternative analytical form of GCM, an analytical procedure can be derived for calibrating the coupling parameters for problems involving virgin drying.  相似文献

The paper studied by Daga and Deo (2008) considers the feasibility of using genetic programming (GP) for estimating wind from waves by inverse modeling. The paper includes some problems about the fundamental aspects and use of the proposed GP approach for the aim of their study. In this discussion, some controversial points of the paper are given.  相似文献

Despite a missing definition of equivalence of mathematical models or methods by Zhang et al. (Math Geosci, 2013), an “equivalence” (Zhang et al., Math Geosci, 2013, p. 6,7,8,14) of modified weights-of-evidence (Agterberg, Nat Resour Res 20:95–101, 2011) and logistic regression does not generally exist. Its alleged proof is based on a previously conjectured linear relationship between weights of evidence and logistic regression parameters (Deng, Nat Resour Res 18:249–258, 2009), which does not generally exist either (Schaeben and van den Boogaart, Nat Resour Res 20:401–406, 2011). In fact, an extremely simple linear relationship exists only if the predictor variables are conditionally independent given the target variable, in which case the contrasts, i.e., the differences of the weights, are equal to the logistic regression parameters. Thus, weights-of-evidence is the special case of logistic regression if the predictor variables are binary and conditionally independent given the target variable.  相似文献

Conclusions The calibration by Blundy and Holland is not a calibration of the reaction albite + tremolite = edenite + 4quartz, because the AlIV content of amphiboles is a combined result of substitutions. The requirements for a calibration of any of these substitutions are: (1) an amphibole-activity model unequivocally accounting for each substitution and (2) a data-set, wherein all amphiboles are buffered by the same assemblages.  相似文献
