A massive vapour cloud explosion occurred at the Buncefield fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead, UK, in the morning of 2005 December 11. The explosion was the result of an overflow from one of the storage tanks with the release of over 300 tons of petrol and generating a vapour cloud that spread over an area of 80 000 m2, before being ignited. Considerable damage was caused in the vicinity of the explosion and a total of 43 people were injured. The explosion was detected by seismograph stations in the UK and the Netherlands and by infrasound arrays in the Netherlands. We analysed the seismic recordings to determine the origin time of 06:01:31.45 ±0.5 s (UTC) from P -wave arrival times. Uncertainties in determination of origin time from acoustic arrival times alone were less than 10 s. Amplitudes of P -, Lg and primary acoustic waves were measured to derive decay relationships as function of distance. From the seismic amplitudes we estimated a yield of 2–10 tons equivalent to a buried explosion. Most seismic stations recorded primary and secondary acoustic waves. We used atmospheric ray tracing to identify the various travel paths, which depend on temperature and wind speed as function of altitude, leading to directional variation. Refracted waves were observed from the troposphere, stratosphere and thermosphere with a good match between observed and calculated traveltimes. The various wave types were also identified through array processing, which provides backazimuth and slowness, of recordings from an infrasound array in the Netherlands. The amplitude of stratospheric refracted acoustic waves recorded by the array microbarometers was used to estimate a yield of 21.6 (±5) tons TNT equivalent. We have demonstrated through joint seismo-acoustic analysis of the explosion that both the seismic velocity model and the atmospheric model are sufficient to explain the observed traveltimes.  相似文献

We present the results of Rayleigh wave and Love wave phase velocity tomography in the western United States using ambient seismic noise observed at over 250 broad-band stations from the EarthScope/USArray Transportable Array and regional networks. All available three-component time-series for the 12-month span between 2005 November 1 and 2006 October 31 have been cross-correlated to yield estimated empirical Rayleigh and Love wave Green's functions. The Love wave signals were observed with higher average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than Rayleigh wave signals and hence cannot be fully explained by the scattering of Rayleigh waves. Phase velocity dispersion curves for both Rayleigh and Love waves between 5 and 40 speriod were measured for each interstation path by applying frequency–time analysis. The average uncertainty and systematic bias of the measurements are estimated using a method based on analysing thousands of nearly linearly aligned station-triplets. We find that empirical Green's functions can be estimated accurately from the negative time derivative of the symmetric component ambient noise cross-correlation without explicit knowledge of the source distribution. The average traveltime uncertainty is less than 1 s at periods shorter than 24 s. We present Rayleigh and Love wave phase speed maps at periods of 8, 12, 16,and 20 s. The maps show clear correlations with major geological structures and qualitative agreement with previous results based on Rayleigh wave group speeds.  相似文献

Traveltime computation methods for strongly heterogeneous 3-D media developed during recent years are well suited for earthquake location. We present here a new method based on the traveltime algorithm of Podvin-Lecomte, related to the inverse problem formulation of Tarantola & Valette. The Podvin-Lecomte method, based on the Huygens principle, is very robust and allows arbitrary surface topography and station placement even for borehole instruments. First arrival traveltimes are computed for each of the recording stations using a fine 3-D velocity mesh (up to 106 cells on a workstation). The traveltime grid allows the use of the Tarantola & Valette formulation, which enables a full non-linear approach. The solution is given as a 3-D probability density function of hypocentre coordinates, which accounts for the arrival time measurements as well as a priori information for the location, the accuracy of both the arrival time readings and the computation of the theoretical traveltimes. This powerful method called 3DGRIDLOC gives the location of the induced seismicity of the gas field of Lacq (France) using 443 520 cells of a 3-D velocity mesh and the observations from nine recording stations, one of which is located at the bottom of a 3880 m deep borehole. Location of synthetic foci as well as more than 500 actual earthquakes shows the real advantages of this new method versus the classical HYPO71. A new insight into the induced seismicity is now possible: induced seismicity may occur as far away as 10 km from the gas reservoir and involve a much greater volume of rock than expected using earlier locations.  相似文献

High-frequency body waves recorded by a temporary seismic array across the surface rupture trace of the 1992 Landers, California, earthquake were used to determine fault-zone structures down to the seismogenic depth. We first developed a technique to use generalized ray theory to compute synthetic seismograms for arbitrarily oriented tabular low-velocity fault-zone models. We then generated synthetic waveform record sections of a linear array across a vertical fault zone. They show that both arrival times and waveforms of P and S waves vary systematically across the fault due to transmissions and reflections from boundaries of the low-velocity fault zone. The waveform characteristics and arrival-time patterns in the record sections allow us to locate the boundaries of the fault zone and to determine its P - and S -wave velocities independently as well as its depth extent. Therefore, the trade-off between the fault-zone width and velocities can be avoided. Applying the method to the Landers waveform data reveals a low-velocity zone with a width of 270–360 m and a 35–60 per cent reduction in P and S velocities relative to the host rock. The analysis suggests that the low-velocity zone extends to a depth of ∼7 km. The western boundary of the low-velocity zone coincides with the observed main surface rupture trace.  相似文献

Seismic tomography has been one of the primary tools to image the interior of the earth and other elastic structures. To date the inversions of compressional ( P ) and shear ( S ) wave speeds have been carried out separately under the assumption that P traveltimes are affected only by the P wave speed of the elastic media and S traveltimes by the S wave speed. Using numerical and analytical solutions, we show that for finite-frequency seismic waves, S wave speed perturbations may have significant effects on P waveforms. This suggests that when waveform-derived traveltime and amplitude anomalies are used in tomographic inversions, the P -wave measurements should be related to not only P wave speed perturbations but also S wave speed perturbations.  相似文献

A tomographic inversion technique that inverts traveltimes to obtain a model of the subsurface in terms of velocities and interfaces is presented. It uses a combination of refraction, wide-angle reflection and normal-incidence data, it simultaneously inverts for velocities and interface depths, and it is able to quantify the errors and trade-offs in the final model. The technique uses an iterative linearized approach to the non-linear traveltime inversion problem. The subsurface is represented as a set of layers separated by interfaces, across which the velocity may be discontinuous. Within each layer the velocity varies in two dimensions and has a continuous first derivative. Rays are traced in this medium using a technique based on ray perturbation theory, and two-point ray tracing is avoided by interpolating the traveltimes to the receivers from a roughly equidistant fan of rays. The calculated traveltimes are inverted by simultaneously minimizing the misfit between the data and calculated traveltimes, and the roughness of the model. This 'smoothing regularization' stabilizes the solution of the inverse problem. In practice, the first iterations are performed with a high level of smoothing. As the inversion proceeds, the level of smoothing is gradually reduced until the traveltime residual is at the estimated level of noise in the data. At this point, a minimum-feature solution is obtained, which should contain only those features discernible over the noise.
The technique is tested on a synthetic data set, demonstrating its accuracy and stability and also illustrating the desirability of including a large number of different ray types in an inversion.  相似文献

Seismic traveltimes and amplitudes in reflection-seismic data show different dependences on the geometry of reflection interfaces, and on the variation of interval velocities. These dependences are revealed by eigenanalysis of the Hessian matrix, defined in terms of the Fréchet matrix and its adjoint associated with different norms chosen in the model space. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the Hessian clearly show that for reflection tomographic inversion, traveltime and amplitude data contain complementary information. Both for reflector-geometry and for interval-velocity variations, the traveltimes are sensitive to the model components with small wavenumbers, whereas the amplitudes are more sensitive to the components with high wavenumbers. The model resolution matrices, after the rejection of eigenvectors corresponding to small eigenvalues, give us some insight into how the addition of amplitude information could potentially contribute to the recovery of physical parameters.
In order to cooperatively invert seismic traveltimes and amplitudes simultaneously, we propose an empirical definition of the data covariance matrix which balances the relative sensitivities of different types of data. We investigate the cooperative use of both data types for, separately, interface-geometry and 2-D interval-velocity variations. In both cases we find that cooperative inversions can provide better solutions than those using traveltimes alone. The potential benefit of including amplitude-data constraints in seismic-reflection traveltime tomography is therefore that it may be possible to resolve the known ambiguity between the reflector-depth uncertainty and the interval-velocity uncertainty better.  相似文献

We investigate the sensitivity of finite-frequency body-wave observables to mantle anisotropy based upon kernels calculated by combining adjoint methods and spectral-element modelling of seismic wave propagation. Anisotropy is described by 21 density-normalized elastic parameters naturally involved in asymptotic wave propagation in weakly anisotropic media. In a 1-D reference model, body-wave sensitivity to anisotropy is characterized by 'banana–doughnut' kernels which exhibit large, path-dependent variations and even sign changes. P -wave traveltimes appear much more sensitive to certain azimuthally anisotropic parameters than to the usual isotropic parameters, suggesting that isotropic P -wave tomography could be significantly biased by coherent anisotropic structures, such as slabs. Because of shear-wave splitting, the common cross-correlation traveltime anomaly is not an appropriate observable for S waves propagating in anisotropic media. We propose two new observables for shear waves. The first observable is a generalized cross-correlation traveltime anomaly, and the second a generalized 'splitting intensity'. Like P waves, S waves analysed based upon these observables are generally sensitive to a large number of the 21 anisotropic parameters and show significant path-dependent variations. The specific path-geometry of SKS waves results in favourable properties for imaging based upon the splitting intensity, because it is sensitive to a smaller number of anisotropic parameters, and the region which is sampled is mainly limited to the upper mantle beneath the receiver.  相似文献

We report on more than 100 earthquake waveform doublets in five subduction zones, including an earthquake nest in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Each doublet is presumed to be a pair of earthquakes that repeat at essentially the same location. These doublets are important for studying earthquake physics, as well as temporal changes of the inner core. Particularly, our observation from one South Sandwich Islands (SSI) doublet recorded at station INK in Canada shows an inner core traveltime change of ∼0.1 s over ∼6 yr, confirming the inner-core differential motion occurring beneath Central America. Observations from one Aleutian Islands doublet, recorded at station BOSA in South Africa, and from one Kuril Islands doublet, recorded at station BDFB in Brazil, show an apparent inner core traveltime change of ∼0.1 s over ∼7 yr and ∼6 yr, respectively, providing evidence for the temporal change of inner core properties beneath Central Asia and Canada, respectively. On the other hand, observations from one Tonga–Fiji–Solomon Islands doublet, recorded at station PTGA in Brazil, and from one Bucaramanga doublet, recorded at station WRAB in Australia and station CHTO in Thailand, show no/little temporal change (no more than 0.005 s yr−1, if any) of inner core traveltimes for the three corresponding ray paths for which the path in the inner core is nearly parallel to the equatorial plane. Such a pattern of observations showing both presence and possible absence of inner-core traveltime change can be explained by the geometry and relative directions of ray path, lateral velocity gradient and inner-core particle motion due to an eastward super-rotation of a few tenths of a degree per year.  相似文献

Summary Microphones and seismographs were co-located in arrays on Skidaway Island, Georgia, for the launchings of Apollo 13 and 14, 374 km to the south. Simultaneous acoustic and seismic waves were recorded for both events at times appropriate to the arrival of the acoustic waves from the source. Significant comparisons of the true signals are (1) the acoustic signal is relatively broadband compared to the nearly monochromatic seismic signal; (2) the seismic signal is much more continuous than the more pulse-like acoustic signal; (3) ground loading from the pressure variations of the acoustic waves is shown to be too small to account for the seismic waves; (4) the measured phase velocities of both acoustic and seismic waves across the local instrument arrays differ by less than 6 per cent and possibly 3 per cent if experimental error is included. It is concluded that the seismic waves are generated by resonant coupling to the acoustic waves along some 10 km of path on Skidaway Island. The thickness of unconsolidated sediment on the island is appropriate to a resonant ground wave frequency of 3.5 to 4 Hz, as observed. Under appropriate conditions, ground wave observations may prove more effective means of detecting certain aspects of acoustic signals in view of the filtering of wind noise and amplification through resonance.  相似文献

Summary. The phase velocity dispersion of fundamental mode Rayleigh waves (period range 13–127 s) is determined by the interstation method for three profiles that traverse the North Sea region of northwest Europe. The resulting observations have been combined to produce a regional phase velocity curve with 95 per cent confidence intervals, which belongs to the aseismic continental platform category of Knopoff.
Inversions of the regional phase velocity curve by the'Hedgehog'method indicate that the North Sea region is characterized by an upper mantle low-velocity zone of S -wave velocity 4.35–4.45 km/s between depths of approximately 85–200 km.  相似文献

The elastic-wave equation is used to construct sensitivity kernels relating perturbations in elastic parameters to traveltime deviations. Computation of the functions requires a correlation of the forward-propagating seismic wavefield with a backward propagation of the residual wavefield. The computation of the wavefields is accomplished using a finite difference algorithm and is efficiently executed on a CM-2 parallel processor. The source and receiver locations have maximum sensitivity to velocity structure. The sensitivity kernels or wavepaths are well suited for transmission traveltime inversion such as cross-borehole tomography and vertical seismic profiling. Conventional ray tomography and wavepath tomography are applied to a set of P -wave arrival times, from a cross-borehole experiment at Kesterson, California. Because the wavepaths have increased sensitivity near the source and receiver there are differences in resolution of the velocity structure. Both techniques recover the same relative variations in velocity where the coverage is adequate. The wavepath solution is more laterally continuous and the dominant variation is vertical, as is expected for the layered sediments in this region.  相似文献

Velocity estimation remains one of the main problems when imaging the subsurface with seismic reflection data. Traveltime inversion enables us to obtain large-scale structures of the velocity field and the position of seismic reflectors. However, as the media currently under study are becoming more and more complex, we need to know the finer-scale structures. The problem is that below a certain range of velocity heterogeneities, deterministic methods become difficult to use, so we turn to a probabilistic approach. With this in view, we characterize the velocity field as a random field defined by its first and second statistical moments. Usually, a seismic random medium is defined as a homogeneous velocity background perturbed by a small random field that is assumed to be stationary. Thus, we make a link between such a random velocity medium (together with a simple reflector) and seismic reflection traveltimes. Assuming that the traveltimes are ergodic, we use 2-D seismic reflection geometry to study the decrease in the statistical traveltime fluctuations as a function of the offset (the source–receiver distance). Our formulae are based on the Rytov approximation and the parabolic approximation for acoustic waves. The validity and the limits are established for both of these approximations in statistically anisotropic random media. Finally, theoretical inversion procedures are developed for the horizontal correlation structure of the velocity heterogeneities for the simplest case of a horizontal reflector. Synthetic seismograms are then computed (on particular realizations of random media) by simulating scalar wave propagation via finite difference algorithms. There is good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results.  相似文献

Teleseismic P waves passing through low-wave-speed bodies in the mantle are refracted, causing anomalies in their propagation directions that can be measured by seismometer arrays. Waves from earthquakes in the eastern Pacific and western North America arriving at the NORSAR array in Norway and at seismic stations in Scotland pass beneath the Iceland region at depths of ∼ 1000–2000 km. Waves arriving at NORSAR have anomalous arrival azimuths consistent with a low-wave-speed body at a depth of ∼ 1500 km beneath the Iceland–Faeroe ridge with a maximum diameter of ∼250 km and a maximum wave-speed contrast of ∼ 1.5 per cent. This agrees well with whole-mantle tomography results, which image a low-wave-speed body at this location with a diameter of ∼ 500 km and a wave-speed anomaly of ∼ 0.5 per cent, bearing in mind that whole-mantle tomography, because of its limited resolution, broadens and weakens small anomalies. The observations cannot resolve the location of the body, and the anomaly could be caused in whole or in part by larger bodies farther away, for example by a body imaged beneath Greenland by whole-mantle tomography.  相似文献

The inverse tomography method has been used to study the P - and S -waves velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle underneath Iran. The method, based on the principle of source–receiver reciprocity, allows for tomographic studies of regions with sparse distribution of seismic stations if the region has sufficient seismicity. The arrival times of body waves from earthquakes in the study area as reported in the ISC catalogue (1964–1996) at all available epicentral distances are used for calculation of residual arrival times. Prior to inversion we have relocated hypocentres based on a 1-D spherical earth's model taking into account variable crustal thickness and surface topography. During the inversion seismic sources are further relocated simultaneously with the calculation of velocity perturbations. With a series of synthetic tests we demonstrate the power of the algorithm and the data to reconstruct introduced anomalies using the ray paths of the real data set and taking into account the measurement errors and outliers. The velocity anomalies show that the crust and upper mantle beneath the Iranian Plateau comprises a low velocity domain between the Arabian Plate and the Caspian Block. This is in agreement with global tomographic models, and also tectonic models, in which active Iranian plateau is trapped between the stable Turan plate in the north and the Arabian shield in the south. Our results show clear evidence of the mainly aseismic subduction of the oceanic crust of the Oman Sea underneath the Iranian Plateau. However, along the Zagros suture zone, the subduction pattern is more complex than at Makran where the collision of the two plates is highly seismic.  相似文献

We develop a systematic approach to the phase identification of late-arriving groups in 2-D seismic data. Waveforms in the same traveltime branch are grouped, and synthetic traveltimes for all phases are calculated using an initial approximation to the 2-D structure. For each group, we identify the two synthetic phases providing the smallest RMS residuals. If their ratio is less than some predetermined threshold, then the group's phase is ambiguous and both assignments must be tested by traveltime inversion. If there are n unidentified groups, we construct 2 n phase tables and perform a traveltime inversion on every plausible phase assignment. The phase table that provides the highest value of the posterior probability density is taken as correct, and a 2-D velocity model is constructed from the data. This approach is shown to be effective and efficient on both simulated and real data. In addition, the residuals associated with late-arriving groups provide a means of identifying deficiencies in the initial model.  相似文献

The use of the correlation of microtremor records is on its way to develop into a common tool to estimate local shear wave velocity structure. For this reason, the establishment of the conditions for the correct use of this method and its limitations when applied to real data is becoming increasingly important. In addition to the use of frequency domain spatial correlation technique [the Spatial Autocorrelation (SPAC) method], the use of time domain correlation to obtain the Green's function of the medium is rapidly gaining presence. We explore the use of microtremor correlation techniques in the time domain to determine local velocity structure and compare with previous results obtained with the same data using SPAC. Our data come from three experiments carried out in Parkway and Wainuiomata valleys in New Zealand, using broad-band portable stations. Interstation distances range from 5 m to 2.1 km, and our results are useful in the frequency band from 0.1 to 7 Hz. Frequency domain correlation requires an isotropic microtremor field, a condition that need not be satisfied in the time domain. Two station correlations provide useful results due to the temporal stationarity and isotropy, in average, of the microtremor wavefield. This manifests itself in the symmetry of the temporal correlation functions with respect to zero time. Our results show that the local velocity structure and the interstation distance are the key factors conditioning the frequency range where surface wave dispersion can be correctly measured either in frequency or time domains. We confirm that, when the interstation distance becomes much larger than the dominant wavelengths, only the correlation in time domain is useful. All our results indicate that the signal obtained in the correlation of vertical component microtremors is due to the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves, which appears as the most stable propagation mode, without any indication of body waves.  相似文献

Local earthquakes in the vicinity of the Alaskan Peninsula's Shumagin Islands often produce arrivals between the main P and S arrivals not predicted by standard traveltime tables. Based on traveltime and polarization, these anomalous arrivals appear to be from P -to- S conversions at the surface of the subducted Pacific Plate beneath the recording stations. The P -to- S conversion occurs at the top of a low-velocity layer which extends to at least 150 km depth and is 8 ˜ 2 per cent slower than the overlying mantle. The slab is ˜ 7 per cent faster than the mantle. The low-velocity layer contains the foci of the earthquakes in the upper plane of the double seismic zone and confines PS ray paths to lie within it. These observations indicate that layered structures persist to positions well past the surface location of the volcanic front. Reactions forming high-pressure minerals do not yield slab-like velocities until beyond the point that subduction zone magma genesis occurs. If the subducted oceanic crust forms the layer, it is subducted essentially intact.  相似文献

This paper presents a geometrically based algorithm for computing synthetic seismograms for energy transmitted through a 3-D velocity distribution. 3-D ray tracing is performed to compute the traveltimes and geometrical spreading (amplitude). The formulations of both kinematic and dynamic ray-tracing systems are presented. The two-point ray-tracing problem is solved by systematically updating the initial conditions and adjusting the ray direction until the ray intersects the specified endpoint. The amount of adjustment required depends on the derivatives of the position with respect to the given starting angles between consecutive rays. The algorithm uses derivatives to define the steepest-descent direction and to update the initial directions. The convergence rate depends on the complexity of the model.
Test seismograms compare favourably with those from a 2-D asymptotic ray theory algorithm and a 3-D Gaussian-beam algorithm. The algorithm is flexible in modelling arbitrary source and recorder geometries for various smoothly varying 3-D velocity distributions. The algorithm is further tested by simulating surface-to-tunnel vibroseis field data. Shear waves as well as compressional waves may be approximately included. Application of the algorithm to a data set from the Rainier Mesa of the Nevada Test Site produced a good fit to the transmitted (first arrival) traveltimes and amplitudes, with approximately 15 per cent variation in the local 3-D velocity.  相似文献

A 3-D P -velocity map of the crust and upper mantle beneath the southeastern part of India has been reconstructed through the inversion of teleseismic traveltimes. Salient geological features in the study region include the Archean Dharwar Craton and Eastern Ghat metamorphic belt (EGMB), and the Proterozoic Cuddapah and Godavari basins. The Krishna–Godavari basin, on the eastern coastal margin, evolved in response to the Indo–Antarctica breakup. A 24-station temporary network provided 1161 traveltimes, which were used to model 3-D P -velocity variation. The velocity model accounts of 80 per cent of the observed data variance. The velocity picture to a depth of 120 km shows two patterns: a high velocity beneath the interior domain (Dharwar craton and Cuddapah basin), and a lower velocity beneath the eastern margin region (EGMB and coastal basin). Across the array velocity variations of 7–10 per cent in the crust (0–40 km) and 3–5 per cent in the uppermost mantle (40–120 km) are observed. At deeper levels (120–210 km) the upper-mantle velocity differences are insignificant among different geological units. The presence of such a low velocity along the eastern margin suggests significantly thin lithosphere (<100 km) beneath it compared to a thick lithosphere (>200 km) beneath the eastern Dharwar craton. Such lithospheric thinning could be a consequence of Indo–Antarctica break-up.  相似文献
