Mayall Ⅱ = G1 is one of the most luminous globular clusters (GCs) in M31. Here, we determine its age and mass by comparing multicolor photometry with theoretical stellar population synthesis models. Based on far- and near-ultraviolet GALEX photometry, broad-band UBVRI, and infrared JHKs 2MASS data, we construct the most extensive spectral energy distribution of G 1 to date, spanning the wavelength range from 1538 to 20 000A. A quantitative comparison with a variety of simple stellar population (SSP) models yields a mean age which is consistent with G1 being among the oldest building blocks of M31 and having formed within ~1.7 Gyr after the Big Bang. Irrespective of the SSP model or stellar initial mass function adopted, the resulting mass estimates (of order 10^7M⊙) indicate that GI is one of the most massive GCs in the Local Group. However, we speculate that the cluster's exceptionally high mass suggests that it may not be a genuine GC. Our results also suggest that G1 may contain, on average, (1.65±0.63) × 10^2L⊙ far-ultraviolet-bright, hot, extreme horizontal-branch stars, depending on the adopted SSP model. In addition, we demonstrate that extensive multi-passband photometry coupled with SSP analysis enables one to obtain age estimates for old SSPs that have similar accuracies as those from integrated spectroscopy or resolved stellar photometry, provided that some of the free parameters can be constrained independently.  相似文献

The age of the Galactic halo is a critical parameter that can constrain the origin of the stellar halo.In general, the Galactic stellar halo is believed to be very old. However, different independent measurements and techniques based on various types of stars are required so that the age estimates of the Galactic halo are accurate, robust, and reliable. In this work, we provide a novel approach to determine the age of the halo with turn-off stars. We first carefully select 63 field halo turn-off stars from the literature. Then, we compare them with the GARSTEC model, which takes the process of atomic diffusion into account in the B- V vs. metallicity plane. Finally, we run Monte Carlo simulations to consider the uncertainty of the color index and obtain the age of 10.5 ± 1.5 Gyr. This result is in agreement with previous studies. Future works are needed to collect more turn-off samples with more accurate photometry to reduce the uncertainty of the age.  相似文献

The motion of baryonic components of the Milky Way is governed by both luminous and dark matter content of the Galaxy. Thus, the dynamics of Milky Way globular clusters(GCs) can be used as tracers to infer the mass model of the Galaxy up to a large radius. In this work, we apply the directly observable line-of-sight velocities to test if the dynamics of the GC population are consistent with an assumed axisymmetric gravitational potential of the Milky Way. For this, we numerically compute the phase space distribution of the GC population where the orbits are either oriented randomly or co-/counter-rotating with respect to the stellar disk. Then we compare the observed position and line-of-sight velocity distribution of~150 GCs with those of the models. We found that, for the adopted mass model, the co-rotating scenario is the favored model based on various statistical tests. We do the analysis with and without the GCs associated with the progenitors of early merger events. This analysis can be extended in the near future to include precise and copious data to better constrain the Galactic potential up to a large radius.  相似文献

Using multi-band photometric images of M51 and its companion NGC 5195 from ultraviolet to optical and infrared,we investigate spatially resolved stellar population properties of this interacting system with stellar population synthesis models. The observed infrared excess(IRX)is used to constrain dust extinction.Stellar mass is also inferred from the model fitting.By fitting observed spectral energy distributions(SEDs)with synthetical ones,we derive two-dimensional distributions of stellar age, metallicity, dust extinction and stellar mass.In M51,two grand-designed spiral arms extending from the bulge show young age, rich metallicity and abundant dust. The inter-arm regions are filled with older, metalpoorer and less dusty stellar populations.Except for the spiral arm extending from M51 into NGC 5195,the stellar population properties of NGC 5195 are quite featureless.NGC 5195 is much older than M51,and its core is very dusty with AV up to 1.67 mag and dense in stellar mass surface density. The close encounters might drive the dust in the spiral arm of M51 into the center of NGC 5195.  相似文献

Semi-analytic models of galaxy formation are powerful tools to study the evolution of a galaxy population in a cosmological context. However, most models overpredict the number of lowmass galaxies at high redshifts and the colors of model galaxies are not right in the sense that low-mass satellite galaxies are too red and centrals are too blue. The recent version of the L-Galaxies model by Henriques et al.(H15) is a step forward to solve these problems by reproducing the evolution of stellar mass function and the overall fraction of red galaxies. In this paper we compare the two model predictions of L-Galaxies(the other is Guo et al., G13) to SDSS data in detail. We find that in the H15 model the red fraction of central galaxies now agrees with the data due to their implementation of strong AGN feedback, but the stellar mass of centrals in massive halos is now slightly lower than what is indicated by the data. For satellite galaxies, the red fraction of low-mass galaxies(log M*/M⊙ 10)also agrees with the data, but the color of massive satellites(10 log M*/M⊙ 11) is slightly bluer. The correct color of centrals and the bluer color of massive satellites indicate that quenching in massive satellites is not strong enough. We also find that there are too many red spirals and less bulge-dominated galaxies in both H15 and G13 models. Our results suggest that additional mechanisms, such as more minor mergers or disk instability, are needed to slightly increase the stellar mass of the central galaxy in massive galaxies, mainly in the bulge component, and bulge dominated galaxies will be quenched not only by minor mergers, but also by some other mechanisms.  相似文献

Eclipsing binaries provide a unique opportunity to determine fundamental stellar properties. In the era of wide-field cameras and all-sky imaging surveys, thousands of eclipsing binaries have been reported through light curve classification, yet their basic properties remain unexplored due to the extensive efforts needed to follow them up spectroscopically. In this paper we investigate three M2-M3 type double-lined eclipsing binaries discovered by cross-matching eclipsing binaries from the Catalina Sky Survey with spectroscopically classified M dwarfs from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey data release one and two. Because these three M dwarf binaries are faint, we further acquire radial velocity measurements using GMOS on the Gemini North telescope with R ~4000, enabling us to determine the mass and radius of individual stellar components. By jointly fitting the light and radial velocity curves of these systems, we derive the mass and radius of the primary and secondary components of these three systems, in the range between 0.28–0.42 M⊙and 0.29–0.67 R⊙, respectively. Future observations with a high resolution spectrograph will help us pin down the uncertainties in their stellar parameters, and render these systems benchmarks to study M dwarfs, providing inputs to improving stellar models in the low mass regime, or establishing an empirical mass-radius relation for M dwarf stars.  相似文献

Utilizing a Bz K-selection technique, we obtain 14 550 star-forming galaxies(sB z Ks) and 1763 passive galaxies(p Bz Ks) at z ~ 2 from the K-selected(KAB 22.5) catalog in the COSMOS/Ultra VISTA field. The differential number counts of sB z Ks and p Bz Ks are consistent with the results from the literature.Compared to the observed results, semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution provide too few(many) galaxies at the high(low) mass end. Moreover, we find that the star formation rate and stellar mass of sB z Ks follow the relation of the main sequence. Based on HST/Wide Field Camera 3 F160 W imaging, we find a wide range of morphological diversities for sB z Ks, from diffuse to early-type spiral structures, with relatively high M20, large size and low G, while p Bz Ks have elliptical-like compact morphologies with lower M20, smaller size and higher G, indicating a more concentrated and symmetric spatial extent of stellar population distribution in p Bz Ks than sB z Ks. Furthermore, the sizes of p Bz Ks(sB z Ks) at z ~ 2 are on average two to three(one to two) times smaller than those of local early-type(late-type) galaxies with similar stellar mass. Our findings imply that the two classes have different evolution models and mass assembly histories.  相似文献

The amount of 56Ni produced in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion is probably the most important physical parameter underlying the observed correlation of SN Ia lumi-nosities with their light curves. Based on an empirical relation between the 56Ni mass and the light curve parameter △m15, we obtained rough estimates of the 56Ni mass for a large sample of nearby SNe Ia with the aim of exploring the diversity in SN Ia. We found that the derived 56Ni masses for different SNe Ia could vary by a factor of ten (e.g., MNi = 0.1 - 1.3 M⊙),which cannot be explained in terms of the standard Chandraseldaar-mass model (with a 56Ni mass production of 0.4 - 0.8 M⊙). Different explosion and/or progenitor models are clearly required for various SNe Ia, in particular, for those extremely nickel-poor and nickel-rich producers. The nickel-rich (with MNi 0.8 M⊙) SNe Ia are very luminous and may have massive progenitors exceeding the Chandrasekhar-mass limit since extra progenitor fuel is required to produce more 56Ni to power the light curve. This is also consistent with the find-ing that the intrinsically bright SNe Ia prefer to occur in stellar environments of young and massive stars. For example, 75% SNe Ia in spirals have △m15 < 1.2 while this ratio is only 18% in E/S0 galaxies. The nickel-poor SNe Ia (with MNi < 0.2 M⊙) may invoke the sub-Chandrasekhar model, as most of them were found in early-type E/S0 galaxies dominated by the older and low-mass stellar populations. This indicates that SNe Ia in spiral and E/S0 galaxies have progenitors of different properties.  相似文献

Using high-resolution HST/Wide Field Camera 3 F125 W imaging from the CANDELS-COSMOS field, we report the structural and morphological properties of extremely red objects(EROs) at z ~ 1. Based on the UVJ color criteria, we separate EROs into two types: old passive galaxies(OGs) and dusty star-forming galaxies(DGs). For a given stellar mass, we find that the mean size of OGs(DGs) is smaller by a factor of ~ 2(1.5) than that of present-day early-type(late-type) galaxies at a rest-frame optical wavelength. We derive the average effective radii of OGs and DGs, corresponding to 2.09 ± 1.13 kpc and 3.27 ± 1.14 kpc, respectively. Generally, the DGs are heterogeneous, with mixed features including bulges, disks and irregular structures, with relatively high M20, large size and low G. By contrast, OGs have elliptical-like compact morphologies with lower M20, smaller size and higher G, indicating a more concentrated and symmetric spatial extent of the stellar population distribution in OGs than DGs. These findings imply that OGs and DGs have different evolutionary processes, and that the minor merger scenario is the most likely mechanism for the structural properties of OGs. However, the size evolution of DGs is possibly due to the secular evolution of galaxies.  相似文献

Based on MaNGA integral field unit(IFU) spectroscopy we search 60 AGN candidates, which have stellar masses M_*≤5 × 10~9 M_⊙ and show AGN ionization signatures in the BPT diagram. For these AGN candidates,we derive the spatially resolved stellar population with the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT and measure the gradients of the mean stellar age and metallicity. We find that the gradients of mean stellar age(metallicity) of individual AGN-host dwarfs are diverse in 0-0.5 Re,0.5-1 Re and 0-1 Re.However, the overall behavior of the mean stellar age(metallicity) profiles tend to be flat,as the median values of the gradients are close to zero.We further study the overall behavior of the mean stellar age(metallicity) by plotting the co-added radial profiles for the AGN sample and compare with a control sample with similar stellar mass.We find that the median values of light-weighted mean stellar ages of the AGN sample are as old as 2-3 Gyr within 2 Re,which are about 4-7 times older than those of the control sample.Meanwhile, most of the AGN candidates are low-level AGNs,as only eight sources have L_([O)_(Ⅲ])10~(39.5) erg s~(-1).Hence,the AGNs in dwarf galaxies might accelerate the evolution of galaxies by accelerating the consumption of the gas, resulting in an overall quenching of the dwarf galaxies, and the AGNs also become weak due to the lack of gas.The median values of mass-weighted mean stellar age of both samples within 2 Re are similar and as old as about 10 Gyr,indicating that the stellar mass is mainly contributed by old stellar populations. The gradients of co-added mean stellar metallicity for both samples tend to be negative but close to zero, and the similar mean stellar metallicity profiles for both samples indicate that the chemical evolution of the host galaxy is not strongly influenced by the AGN.  相似文献

A model for contact binary systems is presented, which incorporates the following special features: a) The energy exchange between the components is based on the understand-ing that the energy exchange is due to the release of potential, kinetic and thermal energies of the exchanged mass. b) A special form of mass and angular momentum loss occurring in contact binaries is losses via the outer Lagrangian point. c) The effects of spin, orbital rota-tion and tidal action on the stellar structure as well as the effect of meridian circulation on the mixing of the chemical elements are considered. d) The model is valid not only for low-mass contact binaries but also for high-mass contact binaries. For illustration, we used the model to trace the evolution of a massive binary system consisting of one 12M and one 5M star. The result shows that the start and end of the contact stage fall within the semi-detached phase during which the primary continually transfers mass to the secondary. The time span of the contact stage is short and the mass transfer rate is very large. Therefore, the contact stage can be regarded as a special part of the semi-detached phase with a large mass transfer rate. Both mass loss through the outer Lagrangian point and oscillation between contact and semi-contact states can occur during the contact phase, and the effective temperatures of the primary and the secondary are almost equal.  相似文献

Neutrinos play an important role in stellar evolution. They are produced by nuclear reactions or thermal processes. Using the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics(MESA), we study stellar neutrino luminosity with different masses. The neutrino luminosities of stars with different initial masses at different evolutionary stages are simulated. We find that the neutrino flux of a star with 1 M⊙mass at an evolutionary age of 4.61 × 10~9 yr is consistent with that of the Sun. In general, neutrinos are produced by nuclear reactions, and the neutrino luminosity of stars is about one or two magnitudes lower than the photo luminosity. However, neutrino luminosity can exceed photo luminosity during the helium flash which can occur for stars with a mass lower than 8 M_⊙. Although the helium flash does not produce neutrinos, plasma decay, one of the thermal processes, can efficiently make neutrinos during this stage. Due to the high mass-loss rate, a star with a mass of 9 M_⊙does not undergo the helium flash. Its neutrinos mainly originate from nuclear reactions until the end of the AGB stage. At the end of the AGB stage, its neutrino luminosity results from plasma decay which is triggered by the gravitational energy release because of the stellar core contracting.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the analysis of the stellar system HIP 101227 to determine the actual number of components in the system, and their properties. We use dynamical modeling and complex spectrophotometric(involving atmospheric modeling) techniques with recent data, to determine the physical properties and orbital solution for the system, respectively, with better accuracy than past studies. Based on our analysis, we found that the system is more consistent with being a quadruple rather than a binary or a triple system as suggested by previous studies. The total mass of the system determined from our SED analysis is 3.42 ± 0.20 M, which is distributed almost equally between the four stars. The stars are found to be zero-age main sequence stars; i.e., at the last stage of pre-main sequence, with age less than 200 Myr and spectral types K0. All four stars have very similar physical characteristics, suggesting that the fragmentation process is the most likely theory for the formation and evolution of the system.  相似文献

We build a sample of 298 spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies at redshift z~2,selected in the z850-band from the GOODS-MUSIC catalog.By utilizing the rest frame 8μm luminosity as a proxy of the star formation rate(SFR),we check the accuracy of the standard SED-fitting technique, finding it is not accurate enough to provide reliable estimates of the physical parameters of galaxies. We then develop a new SED-fitting method that includes the IR luminosity as a prior and a generalized Calzetti law with a variable RV.Then we exploit the new method to re-analyze our galaxy sample, and to robustly determine SFRs,stellar masses and ages.We find that there is a general trend of increasing attenuation with the SFR.Moreover,we find that the SFRs range between a few to 103M yr 1,the masses from 109to 4×1011M,and the ages from a few tens of Myr to more than 1 Gyr.We discuss how individual age measurements of highly attenuated objects indicate that dust must have formed within a few tens of Myr and already been copious at≤100 Myr.In addition,we find that low luminosity galaxies harbor,on average, significantly older stellar populations and are also less massive than brighter ones;we discuss how these findings and the well known‘downsizing’scenario are consistent in a framework where less massive galaxies form first, but their star formation lasts longer. Finally,we find that the near-IR attenuation is not scarce for luminous objects, contrary to what is customarily assumed;we discuss how this affects the interpretation of the observed M/L ratios.  相似文献

In this second paper of our series, we estimate the age of 41 star clusters, which were detected by Melnick & D'odorico in the nearby spiral galaxy M33, by comparing the integrated photometric measurements with theoretical stellar population synthesis models of Bruzual & Chariot. Also, we calculate the mass of these star clusters using the theoretical M/Lv ratio. The results show that, these star clusters formed continuously in M33 from ~ 7×106 - 1010 years and have masses between ~ 103 and 2×106 M⊙. M33 frames were observed as a part of the BATC Multicolor Survey of the sky in 13 intermediate-band niters from 3800 to 10 OOOA. The relation between age and mass confirms that the sample star cluster masses systematically decrease from the oldest to the youngest.  相似文献

How low surface brightness galaxies(LSBGs)form stars and assemble stellar mass is one of the most important questions related to understanding the LSBG population. We select a sample of 381 HI bright LSBGs with both far ultraviolet(FUV)and near infrared(NIR)observations to investigate the star formation rate(SFR)and stellar mass scales, and the growth mode.We measure the FUV and NIR radii of our sample, which represent the star-forming and stellar mass distribution scales respectively. We also compare the FUV and H band radius-stellar mass relation with archival data,to identify the SFR and stellar mass structure difference between the LSBG population and other galaxies.Since galaxy HI mass has a tight correlation with the HI radius,we can also compare the HI and FUV radii to understand the distribution of HI gas and star formation activities. Our results show that most of the HI selected LSBGs have extended star formation structure. The stellar mass distribution of LSBGs may have a similar structure to disk galaxies at the same stellar mass bins, but the star-forming activity of LSBGs happens at a larger radius than the high surface density galaxies, which may help to identify the LSBG sample from the wide-field deep u band image survey. The HI is also distributed at larger radii, implying a steeper(or not)Kennicutt-Schmidt relation for LSBGs.  相似文献

Based on the star formation histories of galaxies in halos with different masses, we develop an empirical model to grow galaxies in dark matter halos. This model has very few ingredients, any of which can be associated with observational data and thus be efficiently assessed. By applying this model to a very high resolution cosmological N-body simulation, we predict a number of galaxy properties that are a very good match to relevant observational data. Namely, for both centrals and satellites, the galaxy stellar mass functions up to redshift z ≈ 4 and the conditional stellar mass functions in the local universe are in good agreement with observations. In addition, the two point correlation function is well predicted in the different stellar mass ranges explored by our model. Furthermore, after applying stellar population synthesis models to our stellar composition as a function of redshift, we find that the luminosity functions in the 0.1_u,0.1_g,0.1_r,0.1_i and 0.1_z bands agree quite well with the SDSS observational results down to an absolute magnitude at about –17.0. The SDSS conditional luminosity function itself is predicted well. Finally, the cold gas is derived from the star formation rate to predict the HI gas mass within each mock galaxy. We find a remarkably good match to observed HI-to-stellar mass ratios. These features ensure that such galaxy/gas catalogs can be used to generate reliable mock redshift surveys.  相似文献

This paper is the third in our series of papers devoted to the investigation of X-ray emission from OB stars. In our two previous papers,we study the high-resolution X-ray spectra of 32 O stars and 25 B stars to investigate the correlations between the properties of X-ray emission and stellar parameters. We checked if the X-ray hardness and post-shock plasma temperature grow with increasing stellar magnetic field, mass loss rate and terminal wind velocity. Our previous analysis of high-resolution spectra showed that the correlations are weak or even absent. In the present paper,we analyzed low-resolution X-ray spectra, using model-independent X-ray hardness values for checking the above mentioned dependencies. We establish that X-ray luminosities L_X weakly depend on the stellar magnetic field. At the same time,Lx ∝ M~(0.5) and L_X ∝ E_(kin)~(0.5),where M is the mass loss rate and E_(kin) is the kinetic energy of the wind. The X-ray luminosities decrease with growing magnetic confinement parameter η.We also argue that there is an additional(probably non-thermal) component contributed to the stellar X-ray emission.  相似文献

The stellar halo is one of the major components in the Milky Way. Research on its age can provide critical constraints on the origin of the stellar halo and further on the formation of our Galaxy. So far, different approaches and samples have been used to estimate the age of the Galactic halo. In our previous paper, we carefully selected 63 field halo turn-off stars within 1 kpc from the literature using a kinematic approach, then estimated the age of the halo. In this following work, we not only update the data from LAMOST DR4 and Gaia DR1, but also try a different method to select a clean halo sample by combining the metallicity and orbital parameters. Then we compare this halo turn-off sample with the GARSTEC model in the B-V vs. metallicity plane. After Monte Carlo simulations are performed, the age is estimated to be 10.5±1.4 Gyr, highly consistent with our previous result and other studies. However, due to the limited common sources between LAMOST DR4 and Gaia DR1, the final sample in this paper is still quite small. The estimated age will be more robust with the much larger Gaia DR2.  相似文献
