A two-shell moment method with three stream division of the radiation field has been suggested for solving radiative transfer problems in a non-grey extended dust shell surrounding a central star. The results computed are found to be of comparable accuracy with those of Unno and Kondo, obtained by generalized Eddington approximation. A more simplified approximation has been put forward for an optically thin medium.  相似文献

We have calculated the circumstellar extinction curves produced by dust grains which absorb and scatter the stellar radiation in the shells of pre-main-sequence stars. A Monte Carlo method was used to model the radiative transfer in non-spherical shells. The dependence on the particle size distribution and the dust shell parameters has been examined. The application of the theoretical results to explain the extinction and polarization of the Herbig Be star HD 45677 shows that the dust shell is not disk-like and that very small grains are absent in it.  相似文献

Radiation interacts with matter via exchange of energy and momentum. When matter is moving with a relativistic velocity or when the background space–time is strongly curved, rigorous relativistic treatment of hydrodynamics and radiative transfer is required. Here, we derive fully general relativistic radiation hydrodynamic equations from a covariant tensor formalism. The equations can be applied to any three-dimensional problems and are rather straightforward to understand compared to the comoving frame-based equations. The current approach is applicable to any space–time or coordinates, but in this work we specifically choose the Schwarzschild space–time to show explicitly how the hydrodynamic and the radiation moment equations are derived. Some important aspects of relativistic radiation hydrodynamics and the difficulty with the radiation moment formalism are discussed as well.  相似文献

Velocity fields in line formation regions strongly affect the line polarization. The conventionally used observer's frame method of solving the polarized transfer equation becomes expensive and inaccurate for partial redistribution problems, when large amplitude velocity fields have to be considered in the observer's frame. An alternative method of solution is the comoving frame method. Partial redistribution problems are solved using comoving frame formalism for line polarization caused by resonance scattering.  相似文献

We present an algorithm for solving the radiative transfer problem on massively parallel computers using adaptive mesh refinement and domain decomposition. The solver is based on the method of characteristics which requires an adaptive raytracer that integrates the equation of radiative transfer. The radiation field is split into local and global components which are handled separately to overcome the non-locality problem. The solver is implemented in the framework of the magneto-hydrodynamics code FLASH and is coupled by an operator splitting step. The goal is the study of radiation in the context of star formation simulations with a focus on early disc formation and evolution. This requires a proper treatment of radiation physics that covers both the optically thin as well as the optically thick regimes and the transition region in particular. We successfully show the accuracy and feasibility of our method in a series of standard radiative transfer problems and two 3D collapse simulations resembling the early stages of protostar and disc formation.  相似文献

Equations of fully general relativistic radiation hydrodynamics in Kerr space–time are derived. While the interactions between matter and radiation are introduced in the comoving frame, the derivatives used when describing the global evolutions of both the matter and the radiation are given in the Boyer–Lindquist frame (BLF) which is a frame fixed to the coordinate describing the central black hole. Around a rotating black hole, both the matter and the radiation are influenced by the frame-dragging effects due to the black hole's rotation. As a fixed frame, we use the locally non-rotating reference frame (LNRF) which is one of the orthonormal frame. While the special relativistic effects such as beaming effects are introduced by the Lorentz transformation connecting the comoving frame and the LNRF, the general relativistic effects such as frame dragging and gravitational redshift are introduced by the tetrads connecting the LNRF and the BLF.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of magnetic fields and radiative protostellar feedback on the star formation process using self-gravitating radiation magnetohydrodynamical calculations. We present results from a series of calculations of the collapse of  50 M  molecular clouds with various magnetic field strengths and with and without radiative transfer. We find that both magnetic fields and radiation have a dramatic impact on star formation, though the two effects are in many ways complementary. Magnetic fields primarily provide support on large scales to low-density gas, whereas radiation is found to strongly suppress small-scale fragmentation by increasing the temperature in the high-density material near the protostars. With strong magnetic fields and radiative feedback, the net result is an inefficient star formation process with a star formation rate of  ≲10  per cent per free-fall time that approaches the observed rate, although we have only been able to follow the calculations for 1/3 of a free-fall time beyond the onset of star formation.  相似文献

HD 179821 is an evolved star of unknown progenitor mass range (either post-asymptotic giant branch or post-red supergiant) exhibiting a double-peaked spectral energy distribution (SED) with a sharp rise from ∼8 to  20 μm  . Such features have been associated with ejected dust shells or inwardly truncated circumstellar discs. In order to compare SEDs from both systems, we employ a spherically symmetric radiative transfer code and compare it to a radiative, inwardly truncated disc code. As a case study, we model the broad-band SED of HD 179821 using both codes. Shortward of 40 μm, we find that both models produce equivalent fits to the data. However, longward of 40 μm, the radial density distribution and corresponding broad range of disc temperatures produce excess emission above our spherically symmetric solutions and observations. For HD 179821, our best fit consists of a   T eff= 7000 K  central source characterized by  τ V ∼ 1.95  and surrounded by a radiatively driven, spherically symmetric dust shell. The extinction of the central source reddens the broad-band colours so that they resemble a   T eff= 5750 K  photosphere. We believe that HD 179821 contains a hotter central star than previously thought. Our results provide an initial step towards a technique to distinguish geometric differences from spectral modelling.  相似文献

To explain the effects of the ultraviolet (UV) background radiation on the collapse of pre-galactic clouds, we implement a radiation–hydrodynamical calculation, combining one-dimensional spherical hydrodynamics with an accurate treatment of the radiative transfer of ionizing photons. Both absorption and scattering of UV photons are explicitly taken into account. It turns out that a gas cloud contracting within the dark matter potential does not settle into hydrostatic equilibrium, but undergoes run-away collapse even under the presence of the external UV field. The cloud centre is shown to become self-shielded against ionizing photons by radiative transfer effects before shrinking to the rotation barrier. Based on our simulation results, we further discuss the possibility of H2 cooling and subsequent star formation in a run-away collapsing core. The present results are closely relevant to the survival of subgalactic Population III objects as well as to metal injection into intergalactic space.  相似文献

The coupled set of equations of hydrodynamics and radiative transfer is derived for small disturbances in a plane, grey atmosphere. Only radiative transfer is taken into account in the energy equation; dynamical effects of radiation are ignored. A mean stationary radiative flux through the photosphere is taken into account. The radiative transfer equation is used by assuming the Eddington approximation, moreover, an exponential height profile of the temperature and an analytical opacity formula are supposed. For this model we obtained an asymptotic solution for plane nonadiabatic acoustic waves and radiation waves. The approach provides a detailed discussion of the interaction of nonadiabatic p‐modes and radiation waves in a realistic model of the photosphere of a solar‐like star.  相似文献

A general expression for the gravity darkening of the tidally and non-uniformly rotating Roche components of close binary systems is used to calculate the uniform rotational effects on line profiles in an expanding atmosphere. We consider a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) two-level atom approximation in an extended atmosphere, and use Von Zeipel's theorem for the incident radiation at the maximum optical depth  (τ=τmax)  in the atmosphere. These calculations are performed with uniform rotational velocities of 1, 4 and 8 mtu (mean thermal units). It is found that rotation dilutes the radiation field which is similar to the expansion velocity.
We also study rotational aspects, which make the outer layers of the star distorted. The equation of line transfer is solved in the comoving frame of the expanding atmosphere of the primary using complete redistribution in the line. We use a linear law for the velocity of expansion such that the density varies as r −3, where r is the radius of the star, satisfying the law of conservation of mass. It is found that rotation broadens the line profile, and P-Cygni-type line profiles are obtained.  相似文献

The comoving-frame equation of radiative transfer and moment equations are derived in orthogonal, curvilinear coordinates, inclusive of terms of orderv/c. The equation of radiative transfer, which contains the terms due to the effect of curvature of coordinate lines explicitly as well as those of Doppler shift and aberration, is the generalization of Castor's equation for spherical symmetry and of Buchler's equation for Cartesian coordinates. The moment equations agree with Buchler's.  相似文献

In this paper, the Combined Operational Method developed by Busbridge (1961) in connection with the radiative transfer problems in plane-parallel atmospheres has been extended to similar problems in isotropic scattering, homogeneous spherical media. The relevant auxiliary equation has been formulated, the scattering function defined and the integro-differential equation for such function deduced. For a medium having radial distribution of source in addition to the incident flux at the outer surface, the integro-differential equations for source function and emergent intensity have been established.  相似文献

Recent observations have revealed that damped Lyα clouds (DLAs) host star formation activity. In order to examine if such star formation activity can be triggered by ionization fronts, we perform high-resolution hydrodynamics and radiative transfer simulations of the effect of radiative feedback from propagating ionization fronts on high-density clumps. We examine two sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation field to which high-redshift ( z ∼ 3) galaxies could be exposed: one corresponding to the UV radiation originating from stars within the DLA, itself, and the other corresponding to the UV background radiation. We find that, for larger clouds, the propagating I-fronts created by local stellar sources can trigger cooling instability and collapse of significant part, up to 85 per cent, of the cloud, creating conditions for star formation in a time-scale of a few Myr. The passage of the I-front also triggers collapse of smaller clumps (with radii below ∼4 pc), but in these cases the resulting cold and dense gas does not reach conditions conducive to star formation. Assuming that 85 per cent of the gas initially in the clump is converted into stars, we obtain a star formation rate of  ∼0.25 M yr−1 kpc−2  . This is somewhat higher than the value derived from recent observations. On the other hand, the background UV radiation which has harder spectrum fails to trigger cooling and collapse. Instead, the hard photons which have long mean free-path heat the dense clumps, which as a result expand and essentially dissolve in the ambient medium. Therefore, the star formation activity in DLAs is strongly regulated by the radiative feedback, both from the external UV background and internal stellar sources and we predict quiescent evolution of DLAs (not starburst-like evolution).  相似文献

We study the mathematical character of the angular moment equations of radiative transfer in spherical symmetry and conclude that the system is hyperbolic for general forms of the closure relation found in the literature. Hyperbolicity and causality preservation lead to mathematical conditions allowing us to establish a useful characterization of the closure relations. We apply numerical methods specifically designed to solve hyperbolic systems of conservation laws (the so-called Godunov-type methods) to calculate numerical solutions of the radiation transport equations in a static background. The feasibility of the method in all regimes, from diffusion to free-streaming, is demonstrated by a number of numerical tests, and the effect of the choice of the closure relation on the results is discussed.  相似文献

A general Monte Carlo relaxation method has been formulated for the computation of physically self-consistent model stellar atmospheres. The local physical state is obtained by solving simultaneously the equations of statistical equilibrium for the atomic and ionic level populations, the kinetic energy balance equation for the electron gas to obtain the electron temperature, and the equation of radiative transfer. Anisotropic Thomson scattering is included in the equation of transfer and radiation pressure effects are included in the hydrostatic equation. The constraints of hydrostatic and radiative equilibrium are enforced. Local thermodynamic equilibrium (L.T.E.) is assumed as a boundary condition deep in the atmosphere. Elsewhere in the atmosphere L.T.E. is not assumed. The statistical equilibrium equations are solved with no assumptions made concerning detailed balance for the bound-bound radiative processes. The source function is formulated in microscopic detail. All atomic processes contributing to the absorption and emission of radiation are included. The kinetic energy balance equation for the electron gas is formulated in detail. All atomic processes by which kinetic energy is gained and lost by the electron gas are included. The method has been applied to the computation of a model atmosphere for a pure hydrogen early-type star. An idealized model of the hydrogen atom with five bound levels and the continuum was adopted. The results of the trial calculation are discussed with reference to stability, accuracy, and convergence of the solution.Contribution No. 385 from the Kitt Peak National Observatory.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Based on numerical three-dimensional radiative line transfer calculations H emission line profiles of circumstellar Be star envelopes have been derived. The results show that the socalled winebottle-type emission line profiles can be explained by the combination of rotational broadening and non-coherent scattering in optically thick Keplerian disks. In a further calculation the stellar wind model of Be star envelopes has been re-investigated assuming an additional expansion component in the velocity field. The resulting asymmetric winebottle-type profiles and asymmetric shell-type emission lines with blue-shifted central depressions are in contradiction with the observed line shapes. It is concluded that isotropic stationary outflows are not suitable to explain observed asymmetric emission line profiles of Be stars.  相似文献

An accurate numerical method is presented for the solution of the transfer equations in a plane-parallel atmosphere in which scattering occurs according to Rayleigh's law. Some results are given for the polarization and limb darkening of both integrated and monochromatic radiation emerging from grey atmospheres with various ratios of scattering to absorption. The method is equally applicable to non-grey atmospheres.  相似文献

The thermosolutal instability of a radiating two-component plasma, in a porous medium in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field, is examined with respect to the effects of collision frequency and radiative transfer. A combination of the Bestman and Chandrasekar methods is used to solve the eigenvalue problem with two-dimensional disturbances for the case of stationary convection. Radiation present on the onset of instability is found to have a destabilizing effect for even a very small radiation parameter, of the order(0.1). concentration gradient on the other hand has a stabilizing effect on the system. The effect of collision on the onset of stationary cells diminishes for the optical thin non-grey plasma-near equilibrium. This is of paramount importance in cosmic ray physics, as the interaction between the ionized and neutral gas components represents a state which often exists in the universe.  相似文献
