From an analysis of the interstellar extinction we conclude that interstellar grains are of three main kinds: graphite spheres of radii 0.02 m making up 10% of the total grain mass, small dielectric spheres of radius about 0.04 m making up 25% of the mass, and hollow dielectric cylinders containing metallic iron with diameters of 2/3 m making up 45% of the mass. The remaining 20% consists of other metals and metal oxides. The main dielectric component of the grains appears to be comprised of organic material.  相似文献

The implications of the recently reported 237 ms pulsed TeV gamma-ray signal from Geminga with respect to system energetics and gamma-ray emission mechanisms are discussed. Using the reported flux values in the MeV-GeV range from the EGRET and COMPTEL experiments and the published results on TeV emission, the derived emission spectrum of Geminga in the MeV-TeV energy range is shown to suggest a spectral break at 2 GeV, with the differential exponent changing from a value of –1.50 upto 2 GeV to a value of –2.7 in the TeV range.  相似文献

A model of -bursts is considered that treats the flares of neutron stars as a result of convectiveoscillation instability associated with the stars having strong internal magnetic fields ( 1013 to 1014 G). In the context of this model only sufficiently old (104 to 107 yr), drastically cooled-down neutron stars may be sources of -bursts. The paper shows that major characteristics of a -burster in the Supernova N 49 remnant (energy release during burst up to 1044 erg, age 104 yr, burst-to-burst interval (I to 3)×106s; rotation period P=8 s) may be explained under the assumption that the mass of the neutron star is about 0.14M · while its mean magnetic field strength is 1.5×1014 G abd 1013 G within the star and on its surface, respectively. The High-Energy Transient Experiment (HETE) is designed for the multiwavelengths study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in UV, X-ray and gamma-ray range with three scientific instruments. The X-ray instrument, Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM), consists of four units of one-dimensional position sensitive gas proportional counters and two perpendicularly oriented one-dimensional coded apertures. The WXM has a wide FOV of 1.5 steradian together with the capability to locate GRBs with 10 arcmin accuracy, and covers photon energies of 2 to 25 keV with an energy resolution of typically 18 % at 6 keV, measuring wide band spectra together with the gamma-ray spectrometer (FREGATE). The coded X-ray image will be deconvolved on board and the GRB location will be provided to the UV camera within 1 sec . GRB locations will also be broadcast in real time to ground-based observers for follow-up observations.  相似文献

We discuss some fundamental aspects of Earth history as predicted by what has come to be called coherent rather than stochastic catastrophism. The latter essentially seeks to provide an understanding of terrestrial evolution in terms of occasional kilometre-plus impactors from the asteroid belt whereas the former recognises a far more complex extraterrestrial regime arising from the streams of sub-kilometre and kilometre-plus debris due to the disintegration of successive giant comets in sub-Jovian orbits. Periodicities of 15 Myr during the later Phanerozoic (i.e. 250 to 0 Myr BP) and 200 yr during the Holocene (i.e. 10,000 to 0 yr 1313) are likely fundamental signatures in the terrestrial record relating to the action of past and present giant cornets respectively.  相似文献

Charged dust grains of radiia3×10–63×10–5 cm may acquire relativistic energy (>1018 eV) in the intergalactic medium. In order to attain relativistic energy, dust grains have to move in and out (scattering) of the magnetic field of the medium. A relativistic grain of radiusa10–5 cm with Lorentz factor 103 approaching the Earth will break up either due to electrostatic charge or due to sputtering about 150100 km, and may scatter solar photons via a fluorescence process. Dust grains may also melt into droplets in the solar vicinity and may contribute towards observed gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

The baryon-symmetric domain cosmology (BSDC) of Steckeret al. (1971) have explained the diffuse -ray background. However, evidence has shown that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are likely contributors to the diffuse -ray background, so there are some problems with the original formulations. We have reviewed the original formulations and have modified the expressions for the matter temperature and the redshifts at which the cosmic radiation from the BSDC becomes significantly absorbed. In this way, we show that the cosmic radiation from the BSDC agrees remarkably with the cosmic X-ray background from 1 keV to 100 keV. We have also shown that AGNs contribute significantly to the cosmic background beyond 100 keV. Therefore, we have arrived at a consistent model in which the BSDC model and AGN model together can explain the cosmic background from 1 keV to 1 MeV.  相似文献

Spherically symmetric, steady-state, optically thick accretion onto a nonrotating black hole with the mass of is studied. The gas accreting onto the black hole is assumed to be a fully ionized hydrogen plasma withn 0=108 cm–3 andT 0=104 K far from the black hole, and a new approximate expression for the Eddington factor is introduced. The luminosity is estimated to beL=1.875×1033 erg s–1, which primarily arises from the optical surface (1) ofT104 K. The accretion flow is characterized by 1 and (v/c)10. In the optically thin region, the flow remains isothermal, and the increase of temperature occurs at 1. The radiative equilibrium is strictly realized at (v/c)10.  相似文献

The structure of rotating magnetic polytropes is considered in Roche approximation. Investigation of the influence of poloidal as well as toroidal magnetic fields on the conditions of the beginning of matter outflow due to rotational instability is carried out. The influence of the turbulent convection and twisting of magnetic force-lines on the time of smoothing of differential rotation is considered. The estimate of the magneto-turbulence energy generated by differential rotation is presented. Both maximum possible energy output and duration of the quasi-statical evolution phase up to the appearance of hydrodynamic instability due to the effects of general relativity are calculated for supermassive magnetic polytropes of index three with uniform or differential rotation. The radius-mass relation is obtained for supermassive differentially-rotating magnetic polytropes referring to the longest part of the quasi-statistical evolution stage; some consequences are pointed out, including the period-luminosity relation.The evolution of the considered models of supermassive rotating magnetic polytropes with different character of rotation and different geometry of a magnetic field is discussed.The results obtained are summarized in the last section.

We use a simple equation of state, in which the adiabatic index depends on opacity and ionization and we integrate the dynamical and thermodynamical equations for the gravitational collapse of a typical solar composition protocloud, up to the virialization of the energies. Following the evolution of the thermal energy and ionization fraction, violent bounces are obtained at the sudden hardening of the equation of state, when the material becomes ionized.We also suggest a mechanism to explain the onset of protostellar winds.We introduce radiation losses in the model, and integrate again the modified equations, studying the evolution of a 1.1M protocloud. The object's effective temperature stays in a confined small zone of the IR region throughout its fast (40 yr) evolution and its luminosity oscillates and decreases from 5000L to 500L . The radius starts from 35 AU and shrinks down to 140R , before a physical instability gives birth to a strong shock wave with consequent mass loss.  相似文献

Geomagnetic disturbances have been identified with respect to their sources for 1977–1983. The disturbance level was found using the daily planetary index A p. High-amplitude ( 50), mean-amplitude (24) and low-amplitude ( 12) disturbances are caused by solar flares of importance 1, coronal holes, and filament cavities, respectively. The ranges of probable amplitudes of disturbances of different nature and their relative number are found from Poisson random distributions of amplitudes.  相似文献

Charged particle acceleration is considered by a radiation flux from a star or hot spot in X-ray pulsars. It is shown that for any distance from the star there exists the upper velocity limit up to which a particle can be accelerated by radiation. This critical velocity does not depend on the luminosity of the spot. Near the hot spot surface the critical velocityv0.65c. These results are applied to plasma acceleration inX-ray pulsars. The mechanism is advanced, of -ray generation in the course of plasma accretion, onto a neutron star. It is shown that in the presence of a large magnetic field and high luminosity of the spot the relativistic electron-position avalanche may appear. The optical depth of the electron-positron cloud achieves the value of order one. The X-ray quanta emitted by the spot are scattered by relativistic (2.6) electron-positron pairs and are transformed into -radiation. Hard quanta with energy 1 MeV leave the generation region in the narrow cone 0.25.  相似文献

The life-time of the star on AGB is approximately 6 × 104 yr. We divide it into front half and back half of AGB (including to optical Mira variable and OH/IR star) according to their evolution character. The observations show that the star has non-pulsation, but constant mass loss rate ( 5 × 10–7 M yr–1) on front half of AGB. Its circumstellar envelope is formed. When the star has pulsation on back half of AGB, its mass loss rate is relative with time, and increases gradually. In this time the star is on the stage of optical Mira variable. When the mass loss rate reaches the value of 3 × 10–6 M yr–1, the star evoluted from the stage of optical variable into the stage of radio bright OH/IR star. On the end of AGB the mass loss rate reaches 10–4 M yr–1. (Band and Habing 1983, Hermen and Habing 1985).  相似文献

An analysis of the longitudinal distribution of gamma rays from SAS-II data has been carried out using the available information on the gas distribution in the Galaxy. The overall distribution of cosmic rays in the galactic plane can be represented by an exponential function in galactocentric distance with a scale length of 8 kpc upto the solar circle and 10 kpc beyond. There is no evidence for a large gradient of the cosmic ray intensity in the outer parts of the Galaxy. The local emissivities of gamma rays in the energy regionsE >100 MeV and 35 MeV<E <100 MeV are (1.73±0.27)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) and (2.40±0.41)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) respectively. The contribution of °-decay gamma rays is 80% forE >100 MeV and 20% at lower energies. The electron spectrum required by this analysis has a power law spectral index of about –2.7 below a few hundred MeV. The observed gas distribution towards the galactic centre would predict a gamma-ray flux larger than observed. It is suggested that the molecular gas in the central region may be in the form of dense coudlets, in which low evergy cosmic rays do not penetrate; in this case the centre should be seen as a strong source only at high energies. An analysis of the radio sky survey map of the Galaxy at 408 MHz shows thatB varies with a scale-length of 40 kpc; no significance can be attached to the apparent deviation from the equipartition of energy densities between cosmic rays and magnetic field. The derived local emissivity is (1.46±0.28)×10–40 W/((m3 Hz), which corresponds toB 5 G. The surface brightness of radio and gamma-ray emissions in the Galaxy decreases from the centre with scale-lengths 6 kpc and 7 kpc respectively. No positive correlation can be noticed with either co-rotation radius or pattern speed, when compared with external spiral galaxies.  相似文献

Some particular solutions of the restricted three-body problem which determine outgoing or incoming orbits near libration points are considered. The solutions are obtained in the form of absolutely convergent Liapounov series. It is proved that these asymptotic solutions are plane curves situated in the orbital plane of the primaries. Each family of asymptotic solutions for every collinear point consists of four solutions which are the separatrices of a saddle point. The angles of inclination of the separatrices are determined.

A spectral analysis of the time series of daily values of 12 parameters, namely, ten solar radio emissions in the range 275–1755 MHz, 2800 MHz solar radio flux, and sunspot numbers for six continuous intervals of 132 values each during June 1997–July 1999 showed considerable differences from one interval to the next, indicating a nonstationary nature. A 27-day periodicity was noticed in Interval 2 (26.8 days), 3 (27.0 days), 5 (25.5 days), 6 (27.0 days). Other periodicities were near 11.4, 12.3, 13.3, 14.5, 15.5, 16.5, 35, 40, 50–70 days. Periodicities were very similar in a large vertical span of the coronal region corresponding to 670–1755 MHz. Above this region, the homogeneity disappeared. Below this region, there were complications and distortions due to localized solar surface phenomena.  相似文献

We present a model of prompt high-energy particle acceleration during two-current-loop collisions. By investigating test proton and test electron motions in the electromagnetic field derived from the MHD equations, we found that high-energy particle acceleration occurs only in the case ofY-type, loop-loop collisions. The results depend strongly on the plasma and initial position of the test particle. When the plasma increases, the particle acceleration rate decreases. The particles near the edge of the collision region can be accelerated to higher energy than the ones inside it. It has been shown that both protons and electrons can be accelerated to 10 GeV within 0.001 s and 5 MeV within 10–6 s, respectively. In the case ofY-type loop-loop collisions, one may expect that high-energy gamma-ray and neutrons will be generated from interaction between high-energy particles and the low atmospheric plasma.  相似文献

A possibility of developing the analytical theory of perturbed motion for a balloon-satellite influenced by solar radiation pressure force is analysed here on the basis of the limit case modification of the two fixed centers problem whose force-field is a superposition of the Newtonian central field and a homogeneous one. Such an approach enables us in the intermediate orbit already to take into account the effect of a constant force, all coordinates of a satellite being expressed as functions of some monotonically increasing variable by means of inversion of elliptic quadratures. The relations between canonical constants of the intermediate orbit and a quasikeplerian elements coinciding in the absence of solar radiation pressure with keplerian ones are derived. The numerical results and illustrating the perturbations in the radius-vector of the intermediate orbit of a balloon-satellite of the Echo-I type are given.
