We use the method introduced by Karami & Mohebi (2007), and Karami & Teimoorinia (2007) which enable us to derive the orbital parameters of the spectroscopic binary stars by the nonlinear least squares of observed vs. curve fitting (o-c). Using the measured experimental data for radial velocities of the four double-lined spectroscopic binary systems PV Pup, HD 141929, EE Cet and V921 Her, we find both the orbital and the combined spectroscopic elements of these systems. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained using the method of Lehmann-Filhés.  相似文献

We present initial results from a Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet imaging survey of stars known to have hot white dwarf companions which are unresolved from the ground. The hot companions, discovered through their EUV or UV emission, are hidden by the overwhelming brightnesses of the primary stars at visible wavelengths. Out of 17 targets observed, we have resolved eight of them with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, using various ultraviolet filters. Most of the implied orbital periods for the resolved systems are hundreds to thousands of years, but in at least three cases (56 Persei, ζ Cygni and RE J1925−566) it should be possible to detect the orbital motions within the next few years, and they may eventually yield new dynamically determined masses for the white dwarf components. The 56 Persei and 14 Aurigae systems are found to be quadruple and quintuple, respectively, including the known optical components as well as the newly resolved white dwarf companions. The mild barium star ζ Cygni, known to have an 18-year spectroscopic period, is marginally resolved. All of these newly resolved Sirius-type binaries will be useful in determining gravitational redshifts and masses of the white dwarf components.  相似文献

We discuss the properties of 137 cataclysmic variables (CVs) which are included in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data base, and for which accurate orbital periods have been measured. 92 of these systems are new discoveries from SDSS and were followed-up in more detail over the past few years. 45 systems were previously identified as CVs because of the detection of optical outbursts and/or X-ray emission, and subsequently re-identified from the SDSS spectroscopy. The period distribution of the SDSS CVs differs dramatically from that of all the previously known CVs, in particular it contains a significant accumulation of systems in the orbital period range 80–86 min. We identify this feature as the elusive 'period minimum spike' predicted by CV population models, which resolves a long-standing discrepancy between compact binary evolution theory and observations. We show that this spike is almost entirely due to the large number of CVs with very low accretion activity identified by SDSS. The optical spectra of these systems are dominated by emission from the white dwarf photosphere, and display little or no spectroscopic signature from the donor stars, suggesting very low mass companion stars. We determine the average absolute magnitude of these low-luminosity CVs at the period minimum to be  〈 Mg 〉= 11.6 ± 0.7  . Comparison of the SDSS CV sample to the CVs found in the Hamburg Quasar Survey and the Palomar Green Survey suggests that the depth of SDSS is the key ingredient resulting in the discovery of a large number of intrinsically faint short-period systems.  相似文献

We present the results of a radial-velocity study of seven Am stars (HD 3970, 35035, 93946, 151746, 153286, 204751 and 224002) observed at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP) and the Cambridge Observatories with CORAVEL instruments. We find that these systems are single-lined spectroscopic binaries whose orbital elements are determined for the first time. Among this sample, HD 35035 and 153286 have long periods, with   P = 2.8  and 9.5 yr, respectively, which is rather unusual for Am stars. Four systems have orbits with large eccentricities (with   e ≥ 0.4  ). Physical parameters are inferred from this study for the primaries of those systems.
We then investigate the influence of tidal interaction, which has already led to the synchronism of the primaries and/or to the circularization of the orbits of some systems belonging to this sample. We extend this study to the list of 33 objects studied in this series of papers and derive values of the critical fractional radii   r = R / a   for circularization and synchronization of Am-type binaries. We find that the stars with   r ≳ 0.15  are orbiting on circular orbits and that synchronism is likely for all components with   r ≳ 0.20  .  相似文献

A search for evidence of colliding winds is undertaken among the four certain Magellanic Cloud WC/WO spectroscopic binaries found in the companion Paper I, as well as among two Galactic WC/WO binaries of very similar subtype. Two methods of analysis, which allow the determination of orbital inclination and parameters relating to the shock cone from spectroscopic studies of colliding winds, are attempted. In the first method, Lührs' spectroscopic model is fitted to the moderately strong C  iii 5696-Å excess line emission arising in the shock cone for the stars Br22 and WR 9. The four other systems show only very weak C  iii 5696-Å emission. Lührs' model follows well the mean displacement of the line in velocity space, but is unable to reproduce details in the line profile and fails to give a reliable estimate of the orbital inclination. In the second method, an alternative attempt is also made to fit the variation of more global quantities, full width at half-maximum and radial velocity of the excess emission, with phase. This method also gives satisfactory results in a qualitative way, but shows numerical degeneracy with orbital inclination. Colliding wind effects on the very strong C  iv 5808-Å Wolf–Rayet emission line, present in all six binaries, are also found to behave qualitatively as expected. After allowing for line enhancement in colliding wind binaries, it now appears that all Magellanic Cloud WC/WO stars occupy a very narrow range in spectral subclass: WC4/WO3.  相似文献

We present the results of a radial‐velocity study of nine new faint SB1 spectroscopic binaries with composite spectra: HD 137975‐6, 177984, HDE 226489, 231613‐4, 255387‐8, 256138‐9, 264997‐8, 276787 and 293041‐2. The observations were made at Haute‐Provence and Cambridge observatories with CORAVEL instruments between 1982 and 2006. From the radial‐velocity measurements of the cool components, we derive the orbital elements of those spectroscopic binaries for the first time. Using all the available data, we propose a model for each system that describes the nature of the individual components, with an estimation of the angular separation and orbital inclination. Finally we discuss the rotation–revolution synchronism of the cool components. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We present the results of a radial‐velocity study of eight southern SB1 spectroscopic binaries with composite spectra: HD 34318‐9, HD 47579‐80, HD 70442‐3, HD 74946‐7, HD 102171‐2, HD 120901‐2, HD 168701‐2, and HD 174191‐2. The observations were made at Haute‐Provence observatory with the CORAVEL instrument between 1982 and 2006. From the radial‐velocity measurements of the cool components, we derive the orbital elements of those spectroscopic binaries. Using all the available data, we obtain an estimation of the orbital inclination and the angular separation of the two components. Finally we discuss the rotation‐revolution synchronism of the cool components. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The orbital elements of three red‐giant single‐lined spectroscopic binaries, HR 1304, HR 1908 and HD 126947, are presented. They are obtained from observations made with two photoelectric spectrometers of CORAVEL type, the first located at the Observatoire de Haute‐Provence and the second at the Cambridge Observatories. HR 1304 and HR 1908 are known to be chromospherically active stars and to have high spatial velocities; HD 126947 is an intrinsic variable newly detected by Hipparcos. The three systems have long orbital periods: 1.9, 3.2 and 7.7 yr for HR 1304, HR 1908 and HD 126947, respectively. From the orbital elements that we determined and other data available in the literature, we deduce some information about the unseen companions and their separations with respect to the primaries. Finally we discuss the rotation–revolution synchronism and conclude that one star, HR 1908, may have reached the state of pseudo‐synchronism, despite of its long orbital period. From radial velocities determined in high signal-to-noise digital spectra, we report the discovery that the brightest component of the binary system HD 150136 is of spectral type O3. We also present the first double-lined orbital solution for this binary. Our radial velocities confirm the previously published spectroscopic orbital period of 2.6 d. He  ii absorptions appear double at quadratures, but single lines of N  v and N  iv visible in our spectra define a radial velocity orbit of higher semi-amplitude for the primary component than do the He  ii lines. From our orbital analysis, we obtain minimum masses for the binary components of 27 and  18 M  . The neutral He absorptions apparently do not follow the orbital motion of any of the binary components, thus they most probably arise in a third star in the system.  相似文献

The 'All Sky Automated Survey' (ASAS) photometric observations of LS 1135, an O-type single-lined binary (SB1) system with an orbital period of 2.7 d, show that the system is also eclipsing performing a numerical model of this binary based on the Wilson–Devinney method. We obtained an orbital inclination     . With this value of the inclination, we deduced masses   M 1∼ 30 ± 1 M  and   M 2∼ 9 ± 1 M  , and radii   R 1∼ 12 ± 1 R  and   R 2∼ 5 ± 1 R  for primary and secondary components, respectively. Both the components are well inside their respective Roche lobes. Fixing the T eff of the primary to the value corresponding to its spectral type (O6.5V), the T eff obtained for the secondary component corresponds approximately to a spectral type of B1V. The mass ratio   M 2/ M 1∼ 0.3  is among the lowest known values for spectroscopic binaries with O-type components.  相似文献

We present simultaneous high-resolution optical spectroscopy and X-ray data of the X-ray binary system GR Mus (XB 1254–690), obtained over a full range of orbital phases. The X-ray observations are used to re-establish the orbital ephemeris for this source. The optical data include the first spectroscopic detection of the donor star in this system through the use of the Doppler Tomography technique on the Bowen fluorescence blend (∼4630–4650 Å). In combination with an estimate for the orbital parameters of the compact object using the wings of the He  ii λ4686 emission line, dynamical mass constraints of  1.20 ≤ M X /M≤ 2.64  for the neutron star and  0.45 ≤ M 2/M≤ 0.85  for the companion are derived.  相似文献

The orbital period modulation, observed in close binary systems with late-type secondary stars, is considered in the framework of a general model that allows us to test the hypothesis proposed by Applegate. It relates the orbital period variation to the modulation of the gravitational quadrupole moment of their magnetically active secondary stars produced by angular momentum exchanges within their convective envelopes. By considering the case of RS CVn binary systems, it is found that the surface angular velocity variation of the secondary component required by Applegate's hypothesis is between 4 and 12 per cent, i.e. too large to be compatible with the observations and that the kinetic energy dissipated in its convection zone ranges from 4 to 43 times that supplied by the stellar luminosity along one cycle of the orbital period modulation. Similar results are obtained for other classes of close binary systems by applying a scaling relationship based on a simplified internal structure model. The effect of rapid rotation is briefly discussed finding that it is unlikely that the rotational quenching of the turbulent viscosity may solve the discrepancy. Therefore, the hypothesis proposed by Applegate is not adequate to explain the orbital period modulation of close binary systems with a late-type secondary.  相似文献

An investigation of the orbital period changes of the neglected eclipsing binaries, RY Aqr, SZ Her, RV Lyr and V913 Oph, is presented based on all published minima times. Although the explanation of magnetic activity on the surface of the secondaries of the studied Algols is still open, the preferred light‐time effect due to the unseen components around the systems seems more plausible in explaining the tilted sinusoidal variations with relatively high‐amplitudes. The minimal mass values of possible tertiary components have been estimated to be about 1.06, 0.25, 0.78 and 2.85 M for RY Aqr, SZ Her, RV Lyr and V913 Oph, respectively and the results indicate that their contributions to the total light of the eclipsing pairs are measurable with high accuracy photometric and spectroscopic data, if they exist. Applegate's (1992) model has been discussed as an alternative mechanism assuming that the cooler components have magnetic cycles. It is found that the model parameters of RY Aqr and V913 Oph are consistent with the required values in Applegate's model. In addition to the first detailed orbital study on these systems, a statistical survey on the character of the OC variations of classical Algols has revealed that about 50 percent of the systems show cyclic behavior. This means that the presence of possible third bodies around classical Algols should be tested with careful analysis using new data. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We have investigated the long-term X-ray variability, defined as the root-mean-square (rms) of the All Sky Monitor Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (ASM RXTE ) light curves, of a set of galactic Be/X-ray binaries and searched for correlations with system parameters, such as the spin period of the neutron star and the orbital period and eccentricity of the binary. We find that systems with larger rms are those harbouring fast-rotating neutron stars, low eccentric and narrow orbits. These relationships can be explained as the result of the truncation of the circumstellar disc. We also present an updated version of the Hα equivalent width–orbital period diagram, including sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This diagram provides strong observational evidence of the interaction of neutron star with the circumstellar envelope of its massive companion.  相似文献

We present the results of collapse calculations for uniformly rotating, prolate clouds performed using the numerical method: smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The clouds considered are isothermal, prolate spheroids with different axial ratios ( a/b ), and with different values of β, the ratio of the rotational to gravitational energy. Small density perturbations are added to the clouds, and different initial perturbation spectra are studied. All of the clouds considered are strongly unstable to gravitational contraction, and so collapse to form a spindle configuration. Such a linear structure is unstable to fragmentation, so that the clouds break up into a number of subcondensations. The long-term evolution of the system is then determined by the angular momentum possessed by these fragments.
It is found that a number of the calculations performed result in the formation of orbitally stable binary systems, composed of two rotationally supported discs in orbit about their common centre of mass. Tidal interactions during closest approach, close three-body interactions and the continued accretion of material with high specific angular momentum are all found to increase the orbital separation during these calculations, ensuring that the systems do not merge at later times. The calculations are therefore relevant to the problem of binary star formation, though the systems produced tend to have large orbital separations and periods. One of the strong points of the models presented, however, is their ability to produce systems with a range of mass ratios and orbital eccentricities, without the explicit inclusion of biases in the initial conditions.  相似文献

We examine the proposal that the subset of neutron-star and black-hole X-ray binaries that form with Ap or Bp star companions will experience systemic angular-momentum losses due to magnetic braking, not otherwise operative with intermediate-mass companion stars. We suggest that for donor stars possessing the anomalously high magnetic fields associated with Ap and Bp stars, a magnetically coupled, irradiation-driven stellar wind can lead to substantial systemic loss of angular momentum. Hence, these systems, which would otherwise not be expected to experience 'magnetic braking', evolve to shorter orbital periods during mass transfer. In this paper, we detail how such a magnetic braking scenario operates. We apply it to a specific astrophysics problem involving the formation of compact black-hole binaries with low-mass donor stars. At present, it is not understood how these systems form, given that low-mass companion stars are not likely to provide sufficient gravitational potential to unbind the envelope of the massive progenitor of the black hole during a prior 'common-envelope' phase. On the other hand, intermediate-mass companions, such as Ap and Bp stars, could more readily eject the common envelope. However, in the absence of magnetic braking, such systems tend to evolve to long orbital periods. We show that, with the proposed magnetic braking properties afforded by Ap and Bp companions, such a scenario can lead to the formation of compact black-hole binaries with orbital periods, donor masses, lifetimes and production rates that are in accord with the observations. In spite of these successes, our models reveal a significant discrepancy between the calculated effective temperatures and the observed spectral types of the donor stars. Finally, we show that this temperature discrepancy would still exist for other scenarios invoking initially intermediate-mass donor stars, and this presents a substantial unresolved mystery.  相似文献

We report the results of a spectroscopic and polarimetric study of the massive, hydrogen-rich WN6h stars R144 (HD 38282 = BAT99-118 = Brey 89) and R145 (HDE 269928 = BAT99-119 = Brey 90) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Both stars have been suspected to be binaries by previous studies (R144: Schnurr et al.; R145: Moffat). We have combined radial-velocity (RV) data from these two studies with previously unpublished polarimetric data. For R145, we were able to establish, for the first time, an orbital period of 158.8 d, along with the full set of orbital parameters, including the inclination angle i , which was found to be   i = 38°± 9°  . By applying a modified version of the shift-and-add method developed by Demers et al., we were able to isolate the spectral signature of the very faint line companion star. With the RV amplitudes of both components in R145, we were thus able to estimate their absolute masses. We find minimum masses   M WRsin3 i = 116 ± 33 M  and   M Osin3 i = 48 ± 20 M  for the WR and the O component, respectively. Thus, if the low-inclination angle were correct, resulting absolute masses of the components would be at least 300 and  125 M  , respectively. However, such high masses are not supported by brightness considerations when R145 is compared to systems with known very high masses such as NGC 3603-A1 or WR20a. An inclination angle close to  90°  would remedy the situation, but is excluded by the currently available data. More and better data are thus required to firmly establish the nature of this puzzling, yet potentially very massive and important system. As to R144, however, the combined data sets are not sufficient to find any periodicity.  相似文献
