A model of the ferromagnetic origin of magnetic fields of neutron stars is considered. In this model, the magnetic phase transition occurs inside the core of neutron stars soon after formation. However, owing to the high electrical conductivity the core magnetic field is initially fully screened. We study how this magnetic field emerges for an outside observer. After some time, the induced field that screens the ferromagnetic field decays enough to uncover a detectable fraction of the ferromagnetic field. We calculate the time-scale of decay of the screening field and study how it depends on the size of the ferromagnetic core. We find that the same fractional decay of the screening field occurs earlier for larger cores. We conjecture that weak fields of millisecond pulsars, B ∼108–109 G, could be identified with ferromagnetic fields of unshielded fraction ε ∼10−4–10−3 resulting from the decay of screening fields by a factor 1− ε in ∼108 yr since their birth.  相似文献

We present measurements of the angular correlation function of galaxies selected from a B J ∼23.5 multicolour survey of two 5°×5° fields located at high galactic latitudes. The galaxy catalogue of ∼4×105 galaxies is comparable in size to catalogues used to determine the galaxy correlation function at low redshift. Measurements of the z ∼0.4 correlation function at large angular scales show no evidence for a break from a power law, although our results are not inconsistent with a break at ≳15 h−1 Mpc. Despite the large fields-of-view, there are large discrepancies between the measurements of the correlation function in each field, possibly caused by dwarf galaxies within z ∼0.11 clusters near the South Galactic Pole.
Colour selection is used to study the clustering of galaxies from z ∼0 to z ∼0.4. The galaxy correlation function is found to depend strongly on colour, with red galaxies more strongly clustered than blue galaxies by a factor of ≳5 at small scales. The slope of the correlation function is also found to vary with colour, with γ∼1.8 for red galaxies and γ∼1.5 for blue galaxies. The clustering of red galaxies is consistently strong over the entire magnitude range studied, although there are large variations between the two fields. The clustering of blue galaxies is extremely weak over the observed magnitude range, with clustering consistent with r 0∼2 h−1 Mpc. This is weaker than the clustering of late-type galaxies in the local Universe, and suggests that galaxy clustering is more strongly correlated with colour than morphology. This may also be the first detection of a substantial low-redshift galaxy population with clustering properties similar to faint blue galaxies.  相似文献

We argue that the first stars may have spanned the conventional mass range rather than be identified with the very massive objects  (∼100–103 M)  favoured by numerical simulations. Specifically, we find that magnetic field generation processes acting in the first protostellar systems suffice to produce fields that exceed the threshold for magneto-rotational instability (MRI) to operate, and thereby allow the MRI dynamo to generate equipartition-amplitude magnetic fields on protostellar mass scales below  ∼50 M  . Such fields allow primordial star formation to occur at essentially any metallicity by regulating angular momentum transfer, fragmentation, accretion and feedback in much the same way as occurs in conventional molecular clouds.  相似文献

We address the degree and rapidity of generation of small-scale power over the course of structure formation in cosmologies where the primordial power spectrum is strongly suppressed beyond a given wavenumber. We first summarize the situations where one expects such suppressed power spectra and point out their diversity. We then employ an exponential cut-off, which characterizes warm dark matter (WDM) models, as a template for the shape of the cut-off and focus on damping scales ranging from 106 to  109  h −1 M  . Using high-resolution simulations, we show that the suppressed part of the power spectrum is quickly (re)generated and catches up with both the linear and the non-linear evolution of the unsuppressed power spectrum. From   z = 2  onwards, a power spectrum with a primordial cut-off at  109  h −1 M  becomes virtually indistinguishable from an evolved cold dark matter (CDM) power spectrum. An attractor such as that described in Zaldarriaga, Scoccimarro & Hui for power spectra with different spectral indices also emerges in the case of truncated power spectra. Measurements of   z ∼ 0  non-linear power spectra at  ∼100  h −1 kpc  cannot rule out the possibility of linear power spectra damped below  ∼109  h −1 M  . Therefore, WDM or scenarios with similar features should be difficult to exclude in this way.  相似文献

We study the effect of large-scale tangled magnetic fields on the galaxy two-point correlation function in the redshift space. We show that (i) the magnetic field effects can be comparable to the gravity-induced clustering for present magnetic field strength   B 0≃ 5 × 10−8 G  , (ii) the absence of this signal from the present data gives an upper bound   B 0≲ 3 × 10−8 G  and (iii) the future data can probe the magnetic fields of  ≃10−8 G  . A comparison with other constraints on the present magnetic field shows that they are marginally compatible. However, if the magnetic fields corresponding to   B 0≃ 10−8 G  existed at the last scattering surface, they will cause unacceptably large cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies.  相似文献

We present measurements of the clustering properties of galaxies in the field of redshift range 0.5 ≲ z ≲ 1.5 Ultra Steep Spectrum radio sources selected from the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey and the National Radio Astronomy Observatories Very Large Array Sky Survey. Galaxies in these USS fields were identified in deep near-infrared observations, complete down to   K s= 20  , using the IRIS2 instrument at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We used the redshift distribution of   K s < 20  galaxies taken from Cimatti et al. (2002) to constrain the correlation length r 0. We find a strong correlation signal of galaxies with   K s < 20  around our USS sample. A comoving correlation length   r 0= 14.0 ± 2.8  h −1 Mpc  and γ= 1.98 ± 0.15 are derived in a flat cosmological model universe.
We compare our findings with those obtained in a cosmological N -body simulation populated with galform semi-analytic galaxies. We find that clusters of galaxies with masses in the range   M = 1013.4–14.2  h −1 M  have a cluster–galaxy cross-correlation amplitude comparable to those found between the USS hosts and galaxies. These results suggest that distant radio galaxies are excellent tracers of galaxy overdensities and pinpoint the progenitors of present day rich clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lyα emitting galaxies at redshifts   z ∼ 9  : the ' z equals nine' (ZEN) survey. We have obtained deep VLT Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera observations in the narrow J -band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835 and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant Universe and permit a sensitive test for the presence of very high redshift galaxies. We search for   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies displaying a significant narrow-band excess relative to accompanying J -band observations that remain undetected in Hubble Space Telescope ( HST )/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) optical images of each field. No sources consistent with this criterion are detected above the unlensed 90 per cent point-source flux limit of the narrow-band image,   F NB= 3.7 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2  . To date, the total coverage of the ZEN survey has sampled a volume at   z ∼ 9  of approximately 1700 comoving Mpc3 to a Lyα emission luminosity of  1043 erg s−1  . We conclude by considering the prospects for detecting   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies in light of both observed galaxy properties at   z < 7  and simulated populations at   z > 7  .  相似文献

We present extensive tests of the fast action method (FAM) for recovering the past orbits of mass tracers in an expanding universe from their redshift-space coordinates at the present epoch. The tests focus on the reconstruction of present-day peculiar velocities using mock catalogues extracted from high-resolution N -body simulations. The method allows for a self-consistent treatment of redshift-space distortions by direct minimization of a modified action for a cosmological gravitating system. When applied to ideal, volume-limited catalogues, FAM recovers unbiased peculiar velocities with a one-dimensional, 1σ error of ∼220 km  s−1  , if velocities are smoothed on a scale of  5 h −1  Mpc. Alternatively, when no smoothing is applied, FAM predicts nearly unbiased velocities for objects residing outside the highest density regions. In this second case the 1σ error decreases to a level of ∼150 km  s−1  . The correlation properties of the peculiar velocity fields are also correctly recovered on scales larger than  5 h −1  Mpc. Similar results are obtained when FAM is applied to flux-limited catalogues mimicking the IRAS PSC z survey. In this case FAM reconstructs peculiar velocities with similar intrinsic random errors, while velocity–velocity correlation properties are well reproduced beyond scales of  ∼8 h −1  Mpc. We also show that FAM provides better velocity predictions than other, competing methods based on linear theory or the Zel'dovich approximation. These results indicate that FAM can be successfully applied to presently available galaxy redshift surveys such as IRAS PSC z .  相似文献

Gravitational lensing magnifies the observed flux of galaxies behind the lens. We use this effect to constrain the total mass in the cluster Abell 1689 by comparing the lensed luminosities of background galaxies with the luminosity function of an undistorted field. Under the assumption that these galaxies are a random sample of luminosity space, this method is not limited by clustering noise. We use photometric redshift information to estimate galaxy distance and intrinsic luminosity. Knowing the redshift distribution of the background population allows us to lift the mass/background degeneracy common to lensing analysis. In this paper we use nine filters observed over 12 h with the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope to determine the redshifts of 1000 galaxies in the field of Abell 1689. Using a complete sample of 146 background galaxies we measure the cluster mass profile. We find that the total projected mass interior to 0.25  h −1 Mpc is M 2D(<0.25  h −1 Mpc)=(0.48±0.16)×1015  h −1 M, where our error budget includes uncertainties from the photometric redshift determination, the uncertainty in the offset calibration and finite sampling. This result is in good agreement with that found by number-count and shear-based methods and provides a new and independent method to determine cluster masses.  相似文献

The cluster 3C 129 is classified as a rich cluster. An analysis of the properties of the cluster 3C 129 from ROSAT PSPC and HRI, Einstein IPC, and EXOSAT ME observations is presented. The mean temperature from a joint fit of the ROSAT PSPC and EXOSAT ME data is 5.5(±0.2) keV. The luminosity is 0.6×1044 erg s−1 in 0.2–2.4 keV and 2.7×1044 erg s−1 in 0.2–10 keV. We find a cooling flow with a rate of ∼84 M yr−1. The central gas density is 6×10−3 cm−3, and the ICM mass is 3.6×1013 M. The total cluster mass is ∼5×1014 M. The X-ray morphology shows an east–west elongation, which is evidence for a recent merger event. The radio source 3C 129.1 is located near the X-ray centre. Another cluster member galaxy (the radio galaxy 3C 129) is a prototype of head-tailed radio galaxies, and is located in the west part of the cluster. The tail points along the gradient of intracluster gas pressure. There are no significant point X-ray sources associated with the AGNs of the two radio galaxies.  相似文献

We use high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the spatial correlation between weak  ( N H  i < 1015 cm−2)  Lyα absorbers and gas-rich galaxies in the local Universe. We confirm that Lyα absorbers are preferentially expected near gas-rich galaxies and that the degree of correlation increases with the column density of the absorber. The real-space galaxy auto-correlation is stronger than the cross-correlation (correlation lengths   r 0,gg= 3.1 ± 0.1 Mpc  h −1  and   r 0,ag= 1.4 ± 0.1 Mpc  h −1  , respectively), in contrast with the recent results of Ryan-Weber, and the auto-correlation of absorbers is very weak. These results are robust to the presence of strong galactic winds in the hydrodynamical simulations. In redshift space, a further mismatch arises since at small separations the distortion pattern of the simulated galaxy–absorber cross-correlation function is different from the one measured by Ryan-Weber. However, when sampling the intergalactic medium along a limited number of lines-of-sight, as in the real data, uncertainties in the cross-correlation estimates are large enough to account for these discrepancies. Our analysis suggests that the statistical significance of difference between the cross-correlation and auto-correlation signal in current data sets is ∼1σ only.  相似文献

Early reionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM), which is favoured from the WMAP temperature–polarization cross-correlations, contests the validity of the standard scenario of structure formation in the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogony. It is difficult to achieve early enough star formation without rather extreme assumptions such as a very high escape fraction of ionizing photons from protogalaxies or a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF). Here, we propose an alternative scenario that additional fluctuations on small scales induced by primordial magnetic fields trigger early structure formation. We found that ionizing photons from Population III stars formed in dark haloes can easily reionize the Universe by   z ≃ 15  if the strength of primordial magnetic fields is between 0.7 and  1.5 × 10−9 G  .  相似文献

We study the implications of primordial magnetic fields for the thermal and ionization history of the post-recombination era. In particular, we compute the effects of dissipation of primordial magnetic fields owing to ambipolar diffusion and decaying turbulence in the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the collapsing haloes, and compute the effects of the altered thermal and ionization history on the formation of molecular hydrogen. We show that, for magnetic field strengths in the range  2 × 10−10≲ B 0≲ 2 × 10−9 G  , the molecular hydrogen fraction in IGM and collapsing halo can increase by a factor of 5 to 1000 over the case with no magnetic fields. We discuss the implication of the increased molecular hydrogen fraction on the radiative transfer of ultraviolet photons and the formation of first structures in the universe.  相似文献

We compute the continuous part of the ideal-magnetohydrodynamic (ideal-MHD) frequency spectrum of a polar mountain produced by magnetic burial on an accreting neutron star. Applying the formalism developed by Hellsten & Spies, extended to include gravity, we solve the singular eigenvalue problem subject to line-tying boundary conditions. This spectrum divides into an Alfvén part and a cusp part. The eigenfunctions are chirped and anharmonic with an exponential envelope, and the eigenfrequencies cover the whole spectrum above a minimum ωlow. For equilibria with accreted mass  1.2 × 10−6≲ M a/M≲ 1.7 × 10−4  and surface magnetic fields  1011≲ B */G ≲ 1013, ωlow  is approximately independent of   B *  , and increases with M a. The results are consistent with the Alfvén spectrum excited in numerical simulations with the zeus-mp solver. The spectrum is modified substantially by the Coriolis force in neutron stars spinning faster than ∼100 Hz. The implications for gravitational-wave searches for low-mass X-ray binaries are considered briefly.  相似文献

We present a sample of eight extended X-ray sources detected in the wide-field (∼2.3 deg2), bright (2–10 ks) XMM–Newton /2dF survey, reaching a flux limit of  ∼2 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2  . Of these, seven are identified as secure X-ray clusters in the soft 0.3–2 keV band using a standard wavelet algorithm on either the PN or the MOS images. Spectroscopic or photometric redshifts are available for five clusters, spanning a range between 0.12 and 0.68. The X-ray spectral fittings show temperatures between 1 and 4.6 keV, characteristic of poor clusters and groups of galaxies. We derive for the first time the XMM–Newton cluster number count  log  N –log  S   distribution albeit with poor statistics. Both the  log  N –log  S   and the luminosity–temperature relation are in good agreement with previous ROSAT results.  相似文献

Assuming that the dark matter is entirely made up of neutralinos, we re-visit the role of their annihilation on the temperature of diffuse gas in the high-redshift universe  ( z > 10)  , before the formation of luminous structures. We consider neutralinos of particle mass 36 and 100 GeV. The former is able to produce  ∼7  e e +  particles per annihilation through the fremionic channel, and the latter ∼53 particles assuming a purely bosonic channel. High-energy   e e +  particles up-scatter the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons into higher energies via the inverse-Compton scattering. The process produces a power-law   e e +  energy spectrum of index −1 in the energy range of interest, independent of the initial energy distribution. The corresponding energy spectrum of the up-scattered photons is a power law of index −1/2, if absorption by the gas is not included. The scattered photons photoheat the gas by releasing electrons which deposit a fraction (14 per cent) of their energy as heat into the ambient medium. For uniformly distributed neutralinos, the heating is insignificant. The effect is greatly enhanced by the clumping of neutralinos into dense haloes. We use a time-dependent clumping model which takes into account the damping of density fluctuations on mass-scales smaller than  ∼10−6 M  . With this clumping model, the heating mechanism boosts the gas temperature above that of the CMB after a redshift of   z ∼ 30  . By   z ≈ 10  , the gas temperature is nearly 100 times its temperature when no heating is invoked. Similar increase is obtained for the two neutralino masses considered.  相似文献

Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underlying density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSC z ) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find b O,I≈1.21±0.06 and b C,I≈4.3±0.8, in agreement with other recent studies. Finally, there is an excellent one-to-one correspondence of the PSC z and Abell/ACO cluster dipole profiles, once the latter is rescaled by b C,I, out to at least ∼150  h −1 Mpc.  相似文献

The theory of polar magnetic burial in accreting neutron stars predicts that a mountain of accreted material accumulates at the magnetic poles of the star, and that, as the mountain spreads equatorward, it is confined by, and compresses, the equatorial magnetic field. Here, we extend previous, axisymmetric, Grad–Shafranov calculations of the hydromagnetic structure of a magnetic mountain up to accreted masses as high as   M a= 6 × 10−4 M  , by importing the output from previous calculations (which were limited by numerical problems and the formation of closed bubbles to   M a < 10−4 M  ) into the time-dependent, ideal-magnetohydrodynamic code zeus-3d and loading additional mass on to the star dynamically. The rise of buoyant magnetic bubbles through the accreted layer is observed in these experiments. We also investigate the stability of the resulting hydromagnetic equilibria by perturbing them in zeus-3d . Surprisingly, it is observed that the equilibria are marginally stable for all   M a≤ 6 × 10−4 M  ; the mountain oscillates persistently when perturbed, in a combination of Alfvén and acoustic modes, without appreciable damping or growth, and is therefore not disrupted (apart from a transient Parker instability initially, which expels <1 per cent of the mass and magnetic flux).  相似文献

A total of 235 active galactic nuclei (AGN) from two different soft X-ray surveys [the ROSAT Deep Survey (DRS) and the ROSAT International X-ray Optical Survey (RIXOS)] with redshifts between 0 and 3.5 are used to study the clustering of X-ray selected AGN and its evolution. A 2σ significant detection of clustering of such objects is found on scales < 40–80 h −1 Mpc in the RIXOS sample, while no clustering is detected on any scales in the DRS sample. Assuming a single power-law model for the spatial correlation function (SCF), quantitative limits on the AGN clustering have been obtained: a comoving correlation length 1.5 ≲  r 0 ≲ 3.3  h −1 Mpc is implied for comoving evolution, while 1.9 ≲  r 0 ≲ 4.8 for stable clustering and 2.2 ≲  r 0 ≲ 5.5 for linear evolution. These values are consistent with the correlation lengths and evolutions obtained for galaxy samples, but imply smaller amplitude or faster evolution than recent ultraviolet and optically selected AGN samples. We also constrain the ratio of bias parameters between X-ray selected AGN and IRAS galaxies to be ≲ 1.7 on scales ≲ 10  h −1 Mpc, a somewhat smaller value than is inferred from local large-scale dynamical studies.  相似文献

We present a state-of-the-art scenario for newly born magnetars as strong sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the early days after formation. We address several aspects of the astrophysics of rapidly rotating, ultra-magnetized neutron stars (NSs), including early cooling before transition to superfluidity, the effects of the magnetic field on the equilibrium shape of NSs, the internal dynamical state of a fully degenerate, oblique rotator and the strength of the electromagnetic torque on the newly born NS. We show that our scenario is consistent with recent studies of supernova remnant surrounding Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs) in the Galaxy that constrains the electromagnetic energy input from the central NS to be  ≤ 1051  erg. We further show that if this condition is met, then the GW signal from such sources is potentially detectable with the forthcoming generation of GW detectors up to Virgo cluster distances where an event rate ∼1 yr−1 can be estimated. Finally, we point out that the decay of an internal magnetic field in the 1016 G range couples strongly with the NS cooling at very early stages, thus significantly slowing down both processes: the field can remain this strong for at least 103 yr, during which the core temperature stays higher than several times 108 K.  相似文献
