Rocket measurements of absolute intensities in the solar X-ray spectrum on November 4, 1964 around 16:35 UT yield the following results : 1.8·10-2 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 44–60 Å); and 1.5·10-3 erg cm-2 sec-1 (wavelength band 8–15Å). These values were obtained under nearly quiet minimum conditions of the sun.  相似文献

Measurements of electron concentrations in the ionosphere, between 100 and 250 km altitude, were used to compute the increase in solar ionizing radiation during two flares on 21 and 23 May 1967. Since the altitude of maximum absorption of the solar energy (approximately unit optical depth) depends on the wavelength of the radiation, it is possible to estimate separately the energy enhancement in different portions of the spectrum. An ionizing energy flux increase of nearly 5 erg cm–2 sec–1 was observed on 21 May, while on the 23rd, the increase was over 7 erg cm–2 sec–1. In both flares, most of the absolute increase occurred in the 20–205 Å region of the spectrum, although the relative increase was much larger at the shorter wavelengths.  相似文献

Scanning spectrometer measurements in the range 1310–270 Å, observed from the satellite OSO 3, are reported for the solar flare of 2114 UT March 27, 1967. This flare was a long lasting sequence of bursts with EUV spectra consisting of enhanced lines and recombination continua normally emitted from the chromosphere and chromosphere-corona transition region, with unusually small increases in lines normally emited from the corona. An EUV flare spectrum is presented and suggested as one example for interpreting broadband observations of EUV bursts. Any broadband continuum other than known recombination continua contributed less than 6 % of the meassured line and hydrogen recombination continua in the range 270–1310 Å. The ratio of photon flux of Ciii 1176 Å to that of Ciii 977 Å was 0.86, which suggests an ambient density in the region of emission greater than 1012 cm-3 at temperatures near 60000 K.  相似文献

Comparison of computed radiative energy losses of several new empirical chromospheric models with heating by shock wave dissipation gives information on the frequency and strength of shock waves in the solar chromosphere. A mechanical flux of around 2.5 × 106 erg/cm2 sec is found for the base of the chromosphere. The shocks are weak and the wave period is around 10 sec.  相似文献

An experiment has been performed to search for the existence of a flux of solar neutrons at the earth using a detector sensitive to neutrons in the energy region 20–120 MeV. The instrument was carried by balloon to an atmospheric depth of 4 g/cm2, from Palestine, Texas on the morning of November 2, 1967 and flown through sunrise and for about 7 hours into the day. Numerous flares of importance 1B or less occurred during the float period. By comparison of night and day counting rates we have deduced that the upper limit to the continuous emission of solar neutrons at the earth is 2 × 10–2 neutrons/cm2 sec in the above energy region. Using a theoretical form for the neutron differential energy spectrum we have expressed this result as an upper limit differential solar neutron flux. If neutrons were emitted in association with any of the small flares then the maximum flux at the earth was less than 4 × 10–2 neutron/cm2 sec in the same energy region. The minimum detectable flux with the present instrument is therefore well below the predicted flux from a 3B flare (e.g., Nov. 12, 1960) of 550 neutrons/cm2 sec.  相似文献

Skylab EUV observations of an active region near the solar limb were analyzed. Both cool (T < 106 K) and hot (T > 106 K) loops were observed in this region. For the hot loops the observed intensity variations were small, typically a few percent over a period of 30 min. The cool loops exhibited stronger variations, sometimes appearing and disappearing in 5 to 10 min. Most of the cool material observed in the loops appeared to be caused by the downward flow of coronal rain and by the upward ejection of chromospheric material in surges. The frequent EUV brightenings observed near the loop footpoints appear to have been produced by both in situ transient energy releases (e.g. subflares) and the infall/impact of coronal rain. The physical conditions in the loops (temperatures, densities, radiative and conducting cooling rates, cooling times) were determined. The mean energy required to balance the radiative and conductive cooling of the hot loops is approximately 3 × 10–3 erg cm–3 s–1. One coronal heating mechanism that can account for the observed behavior of the EUV emission from McMath region 12634 is heating by the dissipation of fast mode MHD waves.  相似文献

Solar soft X-rays have historically been inaccurately modeled in both relative variations and absolute magnitudes by empirical solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance models. This is a result of the use of a limited number of rocket data sets which were primarily associated with the calibration of the AE-E satellite EUV data set. In this work, the EUV91 solar EUV irradiance model has been upgraded to improve the accuracy of the 3.0 to 5.0 nm relative irradiance variations. The absolute magnitude estimate of the flux in this wavelength range has also been revised upwards. The upgrade was accomplished by first digitizing the SOLRAD 11 satellite 4.4 to 6.0 nm measured energy flux data set, then extracting and extrapolating a derived 3.0 to 5.0 nm photon flux from these data, and finally by performing a correlation between these derived data and the daily and 81-day mean 10.7 cm radio flux emission using a multiple linear regression technique. A correlation coefficient of greater than 0.9 was obtained between the dependent and independent data sets. The derived and modeled 3.0 to 5.0 nm flux varies by more than an order of magnitude over a solar cycle, ranging from a flux below 1×108 to a flux greater than 1×109 photons cm–2 s–1. Solar rotational (27-day) variations in the flux magnitude are a factor of 2. The derived and modeled irradiance absolute values are an order of magnitude greater than previous values from rocket data sets related to the calibration of the AE-E satellite.  相似文献

Broadband sensors aboard the Naval Research Laboratory's SOLRAD 11 satellites measured solar emission in the 0.5 to 3 Å, 1 to 8 Å, 8 to 20 Å, 100 to 500 Å, 500 to 800 Å, and 700 to 1030 Å bands between March 1976 and October 1979. Measurements of EUV and soft X-ray emission from a large number of solar flares were obtained. Although solar flare measurements in the soft X-ray bands are continuously made and used as a standard of a flare's geophysical significance, direct measurements of flare EUV emission are quite rare. We present measurements of the X-ray and EUV emission from several flares with special emphasis on the relative EUV response associated with flares in different categories determined by 1 to 8 Å soft X-ray flux. An example of a flare exhibiting an impulsive (nonthermal) phase is included.Proceedings of the 14th ESLAB Symposium on Physics of Solar Variations, 16–19 Semptember 1980, Scheveningen, The Netherlands.  相似文献

Properties of solar-flare EUV flashes measured via a type of ionospheric event, called a sudden frequency deviation (SFD), are presented. SFD's are sensitive to bursts of radiation in the 1–1030 Å wavelength range. He ii 303.8 Å, O v 629.7 Å, HL 972.5 Å and C iii 977.0 Å have essentially the same impulsive time dependence as the 1–1030 Å flash responsible for SFD's. Soft X-rays (2–20 Å) and certain EUV lines have a much slower time dependence than the 1–1030 Å flash. Most SFD's have some fine structure, but marked quasi-periodicity in EUV flashes is quite rare. EUV flashes are closely associated with hard X-ray bursts, white-light emission, microwave radio bursts and small bright impulsive kernels in the H flare. The intensity of EUV flashes depends on the central meridian distance of the H flare location; the intensity decreases at the limb. The total energy radiated in the 10–1030 Å flash for the largest events observed is about 1031 ergs.  相似文献

All four large EUV bursts (peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancements 2 ergs cm–2 s–1 at 1 AU as deduced from sudden frequency deviations), for which there were available concurrent white light observations of at least fair quality, were detected as white light flares. The rise times and maxima of the white light emissions coincided with rise times and maxima of the EUV bursts. The frequency of strong EUV bursts suggests that white light flares may occur at the rate of five or six per year near sunspot maximum. All of the white light flare areas coincided with intense bright areas of the H flares. These small areas appeared to be sources of high velocity ejecta in H. The white light flares occurred as several knots or patches of 2 to 15 arc-sec diameter, with bright cores perhaps less than 2 arc-sec diameter (1500 km). They preferred the outer penumbral borders of strong sunspots within 10 arc-sec of a longitudinal neutral line in the magnetic field. The peak continuum flux enhancement over the 3500–6500 Å wavelength range is about the same order of magnitude as the peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancement.  相似文献

Some line identifications in solar disk and limb spectra are proposed on the basis of recent laboratory and theoretical results reported in the literature, including allowed lines of Mgi and Fexiv in the EUV spectrum and an expected forbidden line of Fexvii near 1190 Å.  相似文献

The frequency of the occurrence of the tangential discontinuity (TD) was investigated at thirteen interacting regions (the leading edges) of the solar wind, where each averaged value of the total pressure reaches very much higher values, ranging from 3 × 10?10 to 12 × 10?10 erg/m3, than the non-interacting regions (the troughs or the high velocity regions, ?2 × 10?10 erg/cm3).The present result that the degree of the occurrence is considerably higher in the interacting region than in the non-interacting region was confirmed to be consistent with our previous result. It was discovered that the occurrence frequency at the interacting region increases when strong interaction has occurred.  相似文献

Sudden phase anomalies (SPA's) observed in the phase of GBR 16 kHz VLF signals during the years 1977 to 1983 have been analysed in the light of their associated solar X-ray fluxes in the 0.5–4 Å and 1–8 Å bands. An attempt has been made to investigate the solar zenith angle () dependence of the integrated solar X-ray flux for producing SPA's. It is deduced from the observations for < 81° that the phase deviation increases linearly as a whole with increasing solar X-ray fluxes in these two bands. The threshold X-ray flux needed to produce a detectable SPA effect has been estimated to be 1.6 × 10–4 ergcm–2 s–1 and 1.8 × 10–3 ergcm–2 s–1 in the 0.5–4 Å and 1–8 Å bands, respectively. For both bands the average cross section for all atmospheric constituents at a height of 70 km is almost equal to the absorption cross section for the 3 Å X-ray emission.  相似文献

Umbral spectra are shown to contain an absorption feature attributable to the Tl i transition 6p 2 P°3/2–7s 2 S 1/2 at 5350 Å. Analysis of the umbral spectrum suggests a solar abundance in the 0.72< log N(Tl)T<1.10 on the standard scale log N(H) = 12.00. Unidentified blends limit the accuracy of the abundance determination.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility of an additional acceleration of the high speed solar wind by whistler waves propagating outward from a coronal hole. We consider a stationary, spherically symmetric model and assume a radial wind flow as well as a radial magnetic field. The energy equation consists of (a) energy transfer of the electron beam which excites the whistler waves, and (b) energy transfer of the whistler waves described by conservation of wave action density. The momentum conservation equation includes the momentum transfer of two gases (a thermal gas and an electron beam). The variation of the temperature is described by a polytropic law. The variation of solar wind velocity with the radial distance is calculated for different values of energy density of the whistler waves. It is shown that the acceleration of high speed solar wind in the coronal hole due to the whistler waves is very important. We have calculated that the solar wind velocity at the earth's orbit is about equal to 670 km/sec (for wave energy density about 10?4 erg cm?3 at 1.1R⊙). It is in approximate agreement with the observed values.  相似文献

The burst component of the solar X-ray flux in the soft wavelength range 2 < < 12 Å observed from Explorer 33 and Explorer 35 from July 1966 to September 1968 was analyzed. In this period 4028 burst peaks were identified. The differential distributions of the temporal and intensity parameters of the bursts revealed no separation into more than one class of bursts. The most frequently observed value for rise time was 4 min and for decay time was 12 min. The distribution of the ratio of rise to decay time can be represented by an exponential with exponent -2.31 from a ratio of 0.3 to 2.7; the maximum in this distribution occurred at a ratio of 0.3. The values of the total observed flux, divided by the background flux at burst maximum, can be represented by a power law with exponent -2.62 for ratios between 1.5 and 32. The distribution of peak burst fluxes can be represented by a power law with exponent - 1.75 over the range 1–100 milli-erg (cm2 sec)–1. The flux time integral values are given by a power law with exponent -1.44 over the range 1–50 erg cm–2.The distribution of peak burst flux as a function of H importance revealed a general tendency for larger peak X-ray fluxes to occur with both larger H flare areas and with brighter H flares. There is no significant dependence of X-ray burst occurrence on heliographic longitude; the emission thus lacks directivity. The theory of free-free emission by a thermal electron distribution was applied to a composite quantitative discussion of hard X-ray fluxes (data from Arnoldy et al., 1968; Kane and Winckler, 1969; and Hudson et al., 1969) and soft X-ray fluxes during solar X-ray bursts. Using bursts yielding measured X-ray intensities in three different energy intervals, covering a total range of 1–50 keV, temperatures and emission measures were derived. The emission measure was found to vary from event to event. The peak time of hard X-ray events was found to occur an average of 3 min before the peak time of the corresponding soft X-ray bursts. Thus a changing emission measure during the event is also required. A free-free emission process with temperatures of 12–39 × 106K and with an emission measure in the range 3.6 × 1047 to 2.1 × 1050 cm–3 which varies both from event to event and within an individual event is required by the data examined. Now at Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray propagation in the vicinity of 1 kpc from the Sun is considered. The data on the 1012–1015 eV particle anisotropy, on 1012 eV electron spectrum, and on temporal cosmic-ray variations are analyzed. The diffusion coefficientD(1012–1013 eV)=1029–1030 cm2s–1 inferred from the analysis coincides with its standard value in the large-halo model withh=15 kpc. The total power of cosmic-ray generation, about 3×1049 erg per SN in the proton component and about 1048 erg per SN in the electron component, typical of the galactic diffusion model is in agreement with the obtained parameters of local sources.  相似文献

This study is based on a set of ten solar rocket spectra well exposed for photometry photographed on July 27, 1966 by Purcell, Snider, and Tousey. The photometry of the far UV continuum illustrates the transition of the solar temperature minimum at 1700 Å in the solar spectrum - (a) the continuum intensity decreases by 30–50% between 1700 Å and the1 D limit of silicon at 1682 Å, and (b) the equivalent brightness temperature shows minimum values throughout the spectral range 1540–1682 Å, which average just under 4700 ± 100K.The minimum UV brightness temperature is 300K higher than the far infrared measurement of the solar minimum temperature, and possible reasons for this are discussed.Brightness temperatures measured in prominent CO band heads and in the aluminum 1937 Å auto-ionization line also are given.  相似文献

A plastic scintillator counter with anticoincidence screen has been flown in two 4-hour balloon flights, at a floating altitude of 3.2 and 3.5 mb, during day-and night-time respectively. Comparison between the day-and night-time counting-rates gives an upper limit of 10–2n/cm2 sec above 45 MeV for the continuous emission flux. This upper limit is compared with those derived from other experiments in function of the neutron energy spectrum assumed, and also with the expected continuous emission deduced from solar proton fluxes reported in non-flare conditions. It is concluded that with present experimental techniques, non-flare solar neutron emission can be detected only if the proton fluxes observed represent less than 10–3 of the protons accelerated in the sun. This research has been sponsored in part by the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories through the European Office of Aerospace Research, OAR, USAF under contract F 61052-68-C-050.0  相似文献

Recent atomic data have been used to analyze a solar flare spectrum obtained with the Goddard Space Flight Center's grating spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite. There exist in the wavelength region 90–200 Å strong lines from each of the ions Fe xviii-Fe xxiv. The Fe xxi lines can be used as an electron density diagnostic for the 107 K plasma. From our analysis of a particular flare, we find a steep positive slope in the emission measure between 106.5 and 107.2 K and an electron density of 4 × 1011 cm–3 at 107 K. We emphasise the need for high spectral and spatial resolution observations of solar flares in this wavelength region, which has to date been largely neglected.  相似文献
