Robert Howard 《Solar physics》1983,82(1-2):437-437
A series of digitized synoptic observations of solar magnetic and velocity fields has been carried out at the Mount Wilson Observatory since 1967. In recent studies (Howard and LaBonte, 1980; LaBonte and Howard, 1981), the existence of slow, large-scale torsional (toroidal) oscillations of the Sun has been demonstrated. Two modes have been identified. The first is a travelling wave, symmetric about the equator, with wave number 2 per hemisphere. The pattern-alternately slower and faster than the average rotation-starts at the poles and drifts to the equator in an interval of 22 years. At any one latitude on the Sun, the period of the oscillation is 11 years, and the amplitude is 3 m s-1. The magnetic flux emergence that is seen as the solar cycle occurs on average at the latitude of one shear zone of this oscillation. The amplitude of the shear is quite constant from the polar latitudes to the equator. The other mode of torsional oscillation, superposed on the first mode, is a wave number 1 per hemisphere pattern consisting of faster than average rotation at high latitudes around solar maximum and faster than average rotation at low latitudes near solar minimum. The amplitude of the effect is about 5 m s-1. For the first mode, the close relationship in latitude between the activity-related magnetic flux eruption and the torsional shear zone suggests strongly that there is a close connection between these motions and the cycle mechanism. It has been suggested (Yoshimura, 1981; Schüssler, 1981) that the effect is caused by a subsurface Lorentz force wave resulting from the dynamo action of magnetic flux ropes. But, this seems unlikely because of the high latitudes at which the shear wave is seen to originate and the constancy of the magnitude of the shear throughout the life time of the wave.  相似文献

The results of very low frequency (VLF) wave amplitude measurements carried out at the low latitude station Varanasi (geom. lat. 14°55′N, long. 154°E), India during solar flares are presented for the first time. The VLF waves (19.8 kHz) transmitted from the NWC-transmitter, Australia propagated in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide to long distances and were recorded at Varanasi. Data are analyzed and the reflection height H′ and the sharpness factor β are evaluated. It is found that the reflection height decreases whereas sharpness factor increases with the increase of solar flare power. The H′ is found to be higher and β smaller at low latitudes than the corresponding values at mid and high latitudes. The sunspot numbers were low during the considered period 2011–2012, being the rising phase of solar cycle 24 and as a result cosmic rays may impact the D-region ionosphere. The increased ionization from the flare lowers the effective reflecting height, H′, of the D-region roughly in proportion to the logarithm of the X-ray flare intensity from a typical mid-day unperturbed value of about 71–72 km down to about 65 km for an X class flare. The sharpness (β) of the lower edge of the D-region is also significantly increased by the flare but reaches a clear saturation value of about 0.48 km?1 for flares of magnitude greater than about X1 class.  相似文献

From experimental data concerning thermal solar tides, we show that they account for the average diurnal variations of the 557.7 nm atomic oxygen nightglow intensity at 100 km altitude for different latitudes. We point out that this result can be applied to the average diurnal variation of emissions of other constituents such as Na, OH, O2.  相似文献

Radial intensity scars of a Voyager 2 high phase angle image of Titan have been inverted to yield vertical extinction profiles at 1° intervals around the limb. A detached haze layer with peak particle number densities ~0.2 cm?3 exists at all latitudes south of ~45°N, and at an altitude of 300–350 km. The optical depth 0.01 level lies at a radius of 2932 ± 5 km at the equator and at a radius of 2915 ± 10 km over the poles (altitudes of 357 ± 5 and 340 ± 10 km, respectively). In addition to the haze layer at 300–350 km, there is a small enhancement in the extinction at ~450 km which exists at all latitudes between 75°S and ~60°N.  相似文献

From rocket and radar-meteor wind observations, annual and semi-annual components of the zonal flow are derived for latitudes N at heights between 60 and 130 km. Height regions of maximum and minimum amplitude are described with reference to changes in phase. The annual components decrease with height throughout the mesosphere and, after a reversal of phase, enhance to 25 m/sec at 100 ± 5 km. The semi-annual components have maximum amplitudes of 25 m/sec over a wide range of latitude in two height regions at 90 and 120 km and in a limited range of latitude (near 50°) at 65 km.

Calculated temperatures and log densities are discussed in terms of amplitude and phase as functions of height and latitude. Below 100 km a comparison is made with temperature amplitudes derived from independent temperature data. Above 100 km the annual temperature variation maximizes at 115 km and is particularly large at high latitudes (exceeding 50°K). On the other hand, the semi-annual component increases rapidly with height between 110 and 120 km at all latitudes maximizing at the 120 km level, where amplitudes exceed 25°K at high and low latitudes and 10°K at mid-latitudes. The annual component of log density, like the temperature variation, is largest at high latitudes up to 125 km. The semi-annual variation has a minimum at 110–115 km, above which amplitudes increase with height, reaching 5–12 per cent at 130 km according to latitude. The phases at and near 130 km for the annual and semi-annual density variations are very close to those found at greater heights from satellite orbits and amplitudes could be readily extrapolated to agree with those in the satellite region.  相似文献

The ozone height profile in the Arctic, at the end of the winter, has been measured up to an altitude of 100 km using a combined solar occultation and 1.27 μ oxygen emission technique. The typical two layer structure has been observed with a high altitude minimum near 80 km and a maximum at 86 km. The measured concentration in this ozone bulge was 5.1 × 107cm?3, typical of that measured at 52°N for the summer months. It is suggested that this reduced ozone concentration may have been associated with a stratospheric warming event that was in progress at the time of the measurement.  相似文献

Geomagnetic pulsations recorded on the ground are the signatures of the integrated signals from the magnetosphere. Pc3 geomagnetic pulsations are quasi-sinusoidal variations in the earth’s magnetic field in the period range 10–45 seconds. The magnitude of these pulsations ranges from fraction of a nT (nano Tesla) to several nT. These pulsations can be observed in a number of ways. However, the application of ground-based magnetometer arrays has proven to be one of the most successful methods of studying the spatial structure of hydromagnetic waves in the earth’s magnetosphere. The solar wind provides the energy for the earth’s magnetospheric processes. Pc3–5 geomagnetic pulsations can be generated either externally or internally with respect to the magnetosphere. The Pc3 studies undertaken in the past have been confined to middle and high latitudes. The spatial and temporal variations observed in Pc3 occurrence are of vital importance because they provide evidence which can be directly related to wave generation mechanisms both inside and external to the magnetosphere. At low latitudes (L < 3) wave energy predominates in the Pc3 band and the spatial characteristics of these pulsations have received little attention in the past. An array of four low latitude induction coil magnetometers were established in south-east Australia over a longitudinal range of 17 degrees at L = 1.8 to 2.7 for carrying out the study of the effect of the solar wind velocity on these pulsations. Digital dynamic spectra showing Pc3 pulsation activity over a period of about six months have been used to evaluate Pc3 pulsation occurrence. Pc3 occurrence probability at low latitudes has been found to be dominant for the solar wind velocity in the range 400–700 km/s. The results suggest that solar wind controls Pc3 occurrence through a mechanism in which Pc3 wave energy is convected through the magnetosheath and coupled to the standing oscillations of magnetospheric field lines.  相似文献

Observations from the high resolution spherical electrostatic analyzer experiment aboard ISIS 1 have been used to study large amplitude irregularities at low latitudes in the tipside ionosphere. The irregularities appeared as plasma depletions near the magnetic equator and were observed up to satellite apogee (3500 km). The altitude local time distribution of the depletions was such that those at altitudes greater than 2000 km were found only in the post-midnight sector. This result agrees with the predictions of a model for plasma bubbles drifting under the influence of gravity-buoyancy forces. Evidence is presented that the initial steep gradients observed at low altitudes are reduced by anomalous diffusion due to drift waves.  相似文献

Photographs of the OH nightglow in the infra-red between 758 and 895 nm frequently show one or two regular wave systems. Three examples are presented. In the first one, obtained during the night of 13–14 July 1975, a parallax determination provided a value of 85?1+2 km for the height of the emissive layer. A major wave system extended during the 3.5 hr of the night over the field of view of the cameras, with an extension of 1000 × 1000 km over Germany and East of France. As many as 20 wave-crests were visible on the photographs, aligned in a direction 30° west from North. Some of these structures were 600 km long. The wavelength was comprised between 40 and 50 km. The horizontal velocity was equal to 14.5 ms?1, eastwards. In the second example, during the night of 9–10 November 1974, two wave systems were present over Spain. A major one, in the direction N-S, had a wavelength of 30 km and a very low velocity. A second one showed crests in the W-E direction, with wavelengths of 70 km and a velocity of 17 m?1 southwards. A third example, obtained from photographs taken at the European Southern Observatory showed a similar wave display over Argentina during the night of 10–11 January 1975.  相似文献

Abstract— A model for emplacement of deposits of impact craters is presented that explains the size range of Martian layered ejecta craters between 5 km and 60 km in diameter in the low and middle latitudes. The impact model provides estimates of the water content of crater deposits relative to volatile content in the aquifer of Mars. These estimates together with the amount of water required to initiate fluid flow in terrestrial debris flows provide an estimate of 21% by volume (7.6 × 107km3) of water/ice that was stored between 0.27 and 2.5 km depth in the crust of Mars during Hesperian and Amazonian time. This would have been sufficient to supply the water for an ocean in the northern lowlands of Mars. The existence of fluidized craters smaller than 5 km diameter in some places on Mars suggests that volatiles were present locally at depths less than 0.27 km. Deposits of Martian craters may be ideal sites for searches for fossils of early organisms that may have existed in the water table if life originated on Mars.  相似文献

On the basis of a ray tracing method the propagation and the attenuation of an auroral infrasonic wave are studied. Relations between the direct and reflected waves recorded at the Syowa Station, Antarctica, are clarified with regard to; (1) the delay time, (2) the intensity ratio, and (3) trace velocities. The time required for a wave to travel from the source to the ground is calculated as a function of a source altitude. The retardation time of the wave arrival behind the zenith crossing of the source current is deduced. A method is proposed for estimating the altitude of a source current from the retardation and a trace velocity of the wave. It is concluded that the existence of a supersonic equatorward motion of an electrojet which continues for a certain distance is necessary for the observation of auroral infrasonic waves. This distance must exceed at least 60 km equatorwards from the zenith to enable the direct wave to be observed and with total length of 930 km to enable the reflected wave to be observed. From these conditions it is also concluded that the infrasonic wave is not seen in mid latitudes and the reflected wave is a rare phenomenon.  相似文献

Models are developed to describe the photochemistry of ozone on Mars. Catalytic reactions involving H, OH and HO2 play a major role at low latitudes where they ensure a vertical column density for O3 of less than 2 × 10?4 cm atm. The source for odd hydrogen (H + OH + HO2) is relatively smaller at high latitudes in winter due to the small concentrations of H2O present there at that time. Odd hydrogen is also efficiently removed from the high-latitude winter atmosphere by condensation of H2O2. The role of catalytic chemistry is reduced accordingly and the vertical column density of O3 may be as large as 5.7 × 10?3 cm atm in accord with earlier observations carried out by Barth and co-workers with instruments on Mariner 9.  相似文献

We describe an assimilation of thermal profiles below about 40 km altitude and total dust opacities into a general circulation model (GCM) of the martian atmosphere. The data were provided by the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) on board the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft. The results of the assimilation are verified against an independent source of contemporaneous data represented by radio occultation measurements with an ultra-stable radio oscillator, also aboard MGS. This paper describes a comparison between temperature profiles retrieved by the radio occultation experiments and the corresponding profiles given by both an independent, carefully tuned GCM simulation and by an assimilation of TES observations performed over the period of time from middle, northern summer in martian year 24, corresponding to May 1999, until late, northern spring in martian year 27, corresponding to August 2004. This study shows that the assimilation of TES measurements improves the overall agreement between radio occultation observations and the GCM analysis, in particular below 20 km altitude, where the radio occultation measurements are known to be most accurate. Discrepancies still remain, mostly during the global dust storm of year 2001 and at latitudes around 60° N in northern winter-early spring. These are the periods of time and locations, however, for which discrepancies between TES and radio occultation profiles are also shown to be the largest. Finally, a further direct validation is performed, comparing stationary waves at selected latitudes and time of year. Apart from biases at high latitudes in winter time, data assimilation is able to represent the correct wave behaviour, which is one major objective for martian assimilation.  相似文献

Intense (? 10 mVm?1) electrostatic plasma waves near the upper hybrid frequency have been observed between ± 50° magnetic latitude during spacecraft plasmapause crossings. We present wave growth rate and three-dimensional convective amplification calculations which suggest how intense upper hybrid (IUH) events can occur over such a wide range of latitudes. The effects of wave refraction are shown to be crucial to the proper calculation of convective amplification. We first calculate upper hybrid wave growth for an IUH event at 10° MLAT during which a complete electron distribution function with a loss cone feature was measured simultaneously with the waves. We show that a parallel density gradient may be necessary to account for the observed amplification. Without such a density gradient, the dipole magnetic field gradient would quickly refract the wave vector component parallel to the local field lines out of the unstable region in wave vector space. Upon mapping the distribution function observed at 10° MLAT to other latitudes by conserving the electrons' magnetic moments, we then find that the mapped distribution could produce large amplification at higher latitudes only if there is an appropriate parallel density gradient. At the equator, the long magnetic field gradient scale length enables large amplitudes to be attained without a density gradient. The results of our UH ray tracing analysis are related to theories and observations of magnetospheric continuum radiation.  相似文献

Stellar ultraviolet light near 2500 Å is attenuated in the Earth's upper atmosphere due to strong absorption in the Hartley continuum of ozone. The intensity of stars in the Hartley continuum region has been monitored by the University of Wisconsin stellar photometers aboard the OAO-2 satellite during occultation of the star by the Earth's atmosphere. These data have been used to determine the ozone number density profile at the occultation tangent point. The results of approximately 12 stellar occultations, obtained in low latitudes, are presented, giving the nighttime vertical number density profile of ozone in the 60- to 100-km region. The nighttime ozone number density has a bulge in its vertical profile with a peak of 1 to 2×108 cm?3 at approximately 83 km and a minimum near 75 km. The shape of the bulge in the ozone number density profile shows considerable variability with no apparent seasonal or solar cycle change. The ozone profiles obtained during a geomagnetic storm showed little variation at low latitudes.  相似文献

We report the results of three-year long observations of OH masers at 1665 MHz in the W3(OH) source carried out with the 32-m antenna of Svetloe Radio Astronomical Observatory. We found that the strongest activity during the period from December 2011 through March 2012 was exhibited by the region at radial velocity ?46.2km s?1. The region showed no activity in the ensuing time. The most striking outburst was the event that occurred on January 23, 2013 at UT 03:27. At that time the flux of the region increased by a factor of seven in 90 s, and then decreased down to the initial level. Such a time scale yields the upper estimate of 0.18 AU (2.7 × 1012 cm) for the linear size of the maser dot. In 2013–2014 intensity variations were found the ?47.6 and ?45.1km s?1 components with time scales on the order of 10 hours and anticorrelated behavior of the left- and right-hand polarization fluxes. This is the first time that such phenomena have been found in the behavior of OH maser emission, and they cannot be explained by any existing models of maser variability.  相似文献

New radar images obtained from the Arecibo Observatory (resolution 1.5–4.0 km) for portions of the southern hemisphere of Venus show that: the upland of Phoebe Regio contains the southern extension of Devana Chasma, a rift zone extending 4200 km south from Theia Mons and interpreted as a zone of extension; Alpha Regio, the only large region of tessera within the imaged area, is similar to tessera mapped elsewhere on the planet and covers a smaller percentage of the surface than that observed in the northern high latitudes; the upland made of Ushas, Innini and Hathor Montes consists of three distinct volcanic constructs; Themis Regio is mapped as an ovoid chain of radar-bright arcuate single and double ring structures, edifices and bright lineaments. This area is interpreted as a region of mantle upwelling and on the basis of apparent split and separated features, a zone of localized faulting and extension. Linear zones of deformation in Lavinia Planitia are characterized by lineament belts that are often locally elevated, are similar to ridge belts mapped in the northern high latitudes and are interpreted to be characterized mainly by compression; radar-bright lava complexes within Lavinia Planitia are unique to this part of the planet and are interpreted to represent areas of eruption of high volumes of extremely fluid lava; the upland of Lada Terra is bound to the north by a linear deformation zone interpreted as extensional, is characterized by large ovoids and coronae, is interpreted to be associated with an area of mantle upwelling, and is in contrast to the northern high latitude highland of Ishtar Terra. Regions of plains in the southern hemisphere cover about 78%; of the mapped area and are interpreted to be volcanic in origin. Located within the area imaged (10–78 S) are 52 craters interpreted to be of impact origin ranging from 8 to 157 km in diameter. On the basis of an overall crater density of 0.94 craters/106 km2, it is determined that the age of this part of the Venus surface is similar to the 0.3 to 1.0 billion year age calculated for the equatorial region and northern high latitudes. The geologic characteristics of the portion of the Venus southern hemisphere imaged by Arecibo are generally similar to those mapped elsewhere on the planet. This part of the planet is characterized by widespread volcanic plains, large volcanic edifices, and zones of linear belt deformation. The southern hemisphere of Venus differs from northern high latitudes in that tessera makes up only a small percentage of the surface area and the ovoid chain in Themis Regio is unique to this part of the planet. On the basis of the analysis presented here, the southern hemisphere of Venus is interpreted to be characterized by regions of mantle upwelling on a variety of scales (ovoids, region made up of Ushas, Innini and Hathor Montes), upwelling and extension (Themis Regio) and localized compression (lineament belts in Lavinia Planitia).  相似文献

We have obtained spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy of the Venus nightside on 15 nights over three observing seasons. We use the depth of the CO absorption band at 2.3 μm to map the two-dimensional distribution of CO across both hemispheres. Radiative transfer models are used to relate the measured CO band depth to the volume mixing ratio of CO. The results confirm previous investigations in showing a general trend of increased CO abundances at around 60° latitude north and south as compared with the equatorial regions. Observations taken over a few nights generally show very similar CO distributions, but significant changes are apparent over longer periods. In past studies it has been assumed that the CO latitudinal variation occurs near 35 km altitude, at which K-band sensitivity to CO is greatest. By modeling the detailed spectrum of the excess CO at high latitudes we show that it occurs at altitudes around 45 km, much higher than has previously been assumed, and that there cannot be significant contribution from levels of 36 km or lower. We suggest that this is most likely due to downwelling of CO-rich gas from the upper atmosphere at these latitudes, with the CO being removed by around 40 km through chemical processes such as the reaction with SO3.  相似文献

The three-dimensional structure of Saturn's intense equatorial jet from latitudes 8° N to 20° S is revealed from detailed measurements of the motions and spectral reflectivity of clouds at visible wavelengths on high resolution images obtained by the Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) in 2004 and early 2005. Cloud speeds at two altitude levels are measured in the near infrared filters CB2 and CB3 matching the continuum (effective wavelengths 750 and 939 nm) and in the MT2 and MT3 filters matching two methane absorption bands (effective wavelengths 727 and 889 nm). Radiative transfer models in selective filters covering an ample spectral range (250-950 nm) require the existence of two detached aerosol layers in the equator: an uppermost thin stratospheric haze extending between the pressure levels ∼20 and 40 mbar (tropopause level) and below it, a dense tropospheric haze-cloud layer extending between 50 mbar and the base of the ammonia cloud (between ∼1 and 1.4 bar). Individual cloud elements are detected and tracked in the tropospheric dense haze at 50 and 700 mbar (altitude levels separated by 142 km). Between latitudes 5° N and 12° S the winds increase their velocity with depth from 265 m s−1 at the 50 mbar pressure level to 365 m s−1 at 700 mbar. These values are below the high wind speeds of 475 m s−1 measured at these latitudes during the Voyager era in 1980-1981, indicating that the equatorial jet has suffered a significant intensity change between that period and 1996-2005 or that the tracers of the flow used in the Voyager images were rooted at deeper levels than those in Cassini images.  相似文献

Seismic data from the Apollo Passive Seismic Network stations are analyzed to determine the velocity structure and to infer the composition and physical properties of the lunar interior. Data from artificial impacts (S-IVB booster and LM ascent stage) cover a distance range of 70–1100 km. Travel times and amplitudes, as well as theoretical seismograms, are used to derive a velocity model for the outer 150 km of the Moon. TheP wave velocity model confirms our earlier report of a lunar crust in the eastern part of Oceanus Procellarum. The crust is about 60 km thick and may consist of two layers in the mare regions. Possible values for theP-wave velocity in the uppermost mantle are between 7.7 km s–1 and 9.0 km s–1. The 9 km s–1 velocity cannot extend below a depth of about 100 km and must decrease below this depth. The elastic properties of the deep interior as inferred from the seismograms of natural events (meteoroid impacts and moonquakes) occurring at great distance indicate that there is an increase in attenuation and a possible decrease of velocity at depths below about 1000 km. This verifies the high temperatures calculated for the deep lunar interior by thermal history models.Paper presented at the Lunar Science Institute Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Moon and Planets, January 10–12, 1973.  相似文献
