The peculiar δ Del-variable ? Puppis (F6IIp) has been analysed on nine UV high-resolution spectra in the region of Mgii h- and k-lines. This analysis has shown: (1) The Mgii emission is present during the whole pulsation period and increases with increasing luminosity. Maximum emission fluxes seem to occur at phases 0.96–0.12. (2) The phase shift between intensity maxima of Caii and Mgii chromospheric emissions is probably about 0.26. Moreover, it seems that the phase shift between ? Pup and the Cepheid β Dor is longer for the Mgii emission (~0.44) than for the Caii one (~0.27). (3) Violet-red asymmetries are present in emission components. Moreover, the violet component K1V has always an intensity higher than the red one K1R. (4) The averaged radial velocity (RV) curve obtained from three metallic lines is in agreement with that obtained in the optical region. The RV curves of red emission and absorption components are rather similar to that of the metallic lines. Near the minimum of this RV curve, the chromospheric emissions show an intensity enhancement with a negative phase shift similar to that of light curve (~?30 deg). (5) A model with an emitting extended atmosphere around the star is proposed to explain an emission like feature in the self-reversed absorption component K3 and in K1.  相似文献

The results obtained from our IUE observations of some Scuti stars and in particular 71 Tau and 69 Tau are reviewed. 71 Tau is the second brightest X-ray source of the Hyades cluster; on the contrary 69 Tau, very similar to 71 Tau in the optical range, does not show X emissions. The complex and in somewhat controversial scenario obtained from this survey is also discussed. In particular we consider the X-ray emission detected in some Scuti with respect to the chromospheric activity level as measured through the MgII line and to other stellar parameters.  相似文献

We analyze an M9.1 two-ribbon solar flare which occurred on 2004 July 22 us- ing the TRACE white-light and 1700A~。images,the RHESSI,and the SOHO/MDI data.We find many small-scale fast-varying brightenings that appeared in the white-light and 1700A~。images along the flare ribbons.Some of them underwent rapid motions in weak magnetic field regions.We identify these short-lived brightenings as UV continuum enhancement.Our preliminary result shows that the brightenings are closely related to the HXR emission.They have a lifetime of 30-60 s and a typical size of about 1″-2″.The intensity enhancement is about 150-200 times the mean value of the quiet-Sun.According to previous works,we infer that the 1700A~。enhancement may be dominated by the increased emission of 1680 A con- tinuum coming from the temperature minimum region.The impulsive feature in the 1700 A~。light curves of the small-scale brightenings may be due to the irradiation of the impulsive CIV line intensity caused by the bombardment of non-thermal electron beams.  相似文献

UV Tri was observed photometrically from 1999 to 2000 at the Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was also observed with Stroemgren uvby Hβ filter system at the Sierra Nevada Observatory (Spain) in 2000. From period analyses of the data, three pulsation frequencies, 9.3299 c d^-1, 10.8483 cd^-1 and 3.6035 cd^-1 were obtained. We derived color indices: b-y=0.215, m1=0.169, c1=0.783, and β=2.775. With these indices and some calibrations, we obtain:Mv=2.44, Mbol=2.27, logL/L⊙=0.99, and log Teff=3.875. Evolutionary sequences of stellar models with 1.00-2.00 solar masses, at steps of 0.05M⊙,are computed. Each sequence consists of 220 evolutionary intervals. From a comparison between the observed and calculated physical parameters we conclude that UV Tri is in an early evolutionary phase before the turn-off point.  相似文献

We determined atmospheric parameters of the Galactic early B-supergiant HD 198478 (55 Cyg) from the UV silicon lines taken from the high-resolution 1150–1980 Å IUE spectra. TLUSTY numerical code was used to model the stellar atmosphere and to determine the temperature and surface gravity assuming a non-LTE plane parallel hydrostatic stellar atmosphere with microturbulence. The synthesized spectra were broadened by the IUE instrumental profile, rotational and macroturbulent velocity with ROTIN numerical code. The silicon 1264 Å, 1309 Å, 1312 Å, 1417 Å and 1294–1303 Å multiplet lines of different stages of ionization (Si II and Si III) and Balmer Hδ 4101 Å line were modeled, leading to the temperature, surface gravity, rotational and macroturbulent velocity values. Our results have shown that the line broadening cannot be explained by rotational velocity only, but additional macroturbulent velocity component should be taken into account. HD 198478 shows a significant degeneracy in velocity, which means that the individual contributions of the macroturbulence and rotation in the total velocity broadening cannot be distinguished. Adequate fit of TLUSTY models to the observed non-resonant silicon lines suggests that the non-LTE plane-parallel hydrostatic stellar model without wind contribution can be used to explain such lines. We have obtained similar results using the HST STIS spectra in the same procedure, showing that the IUE spectra, despite their lacking quality compared to the STIS spectra, are reliable enough in determination of the B supergiants’ photospheric parameters.  相似文献

Understanding the complex structure, dynamics, and ionization of gas in the nearby interstellar medium is required before one can realistically model interstellar gas in other galaxies. High-resolution ultraviolet spectra provide the essential data for such studies because the resonance lines of most important atoms, ions, and molecules are located in the ultraviolet, and high spectral resolution is needed to resolve line profiles and determine the velocity structure along a line of sight. I list ten important physical questions concerning interstellar gas that require a more sensitive spectrometer than STIS and the desired spectral resolution to answer these questions.  相似文献

The width of the broad Hβ emission line is the primary defining characteristic of the NLS1 class. This parameter is also an important component of Boroson and Green’s optical “Eigenvector 1” (EV1), which links steeper soft X-ray spectra with narrower Hβ emission, stronger Hβ blue wing, stronger optical Fe II emission, and weaker [O III] λ5007. Potentially, EV1 represents a fundamental physical process linking the dynamics of fueling and outflow with the accretion rate. We attempted to understand these relationships by extending the optical spectra into the UV for a sample of 22 QSOs with high quality soft-X-ray spectra, and discovered a whole new set of UV relationships that suggest that high accretion rates are linked to dense gas and perhaps nuclear starbursts. While it has been argued that narrow (BLR) Hβ means low Black Hole mass in luminous NLS1s, the C IV λ1549 and Lyα emission lines are broader, perhaps the result of outflows driven by their high Eddington accretion rates. We present some new trends of optical-UV with X-ray spectral energy distributions. Steeper X-ray spectra appear associated with stronger UV relative to optical continua, but the presence of strong UV absorption lines is associated with depressed soft X-rays and redder optical–UV continua.  相似文献

The hydrogen-deficiency in extremely hot post-AGB stars of spectral class PG1159 is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse that consumes the hydrogen envelope, exposing the usually-hidden intershell region. Thus, the photospheric element abundances of these stars allow us to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We compare predicted element abundances to those determined by quantitative spectral analyses performed with advanced non-LTE model atmospheres. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found for many species (He, C, N, O, Ne, F, Si, Ar) but discrepancies for others (P, S, Fe) point at shortcomings in stellar evolution models for AGB stars. Almost all of the chemical trace elements in these hot stars can only be identified in the UV spectral range. The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and the Hubble Space Telescope played a crucial role for this research.  相似文献

We study the UV spectra of NLS1 galaxies and compare them with typical Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars. The NLS1 spectra show narrower UV lines as well as weaker CIV λ1549 and CIII] λ1909 emission. We show that these line properties are due to a lower ionization parameter and somewhat higher BLR cloud densities. These modified conditions can be explained by the hotter big blue bumps observed in NLS1s, which are in turn due to higher L/LEdd ratios, as shown by our accretion disk and corona modeling of the NLS1 continua. We also present evidence that the Boroson and Green eigenvector 1, which is correlated with the optical and UV emission-line properties, is not driven by orientation and hence NLS1s, which have extreme eigenvector 1 values, are not viewed from an extreme viewing angle.  相似文献

Solar-flare UV and EUV images show elongated bright “ribbons” that move over time. If these ribbons are assumed to locate the footpoints of magnetic-field lines reconnecting in the corona, then it is clear that studying their evolution can provide important insight into the reconnection process. An image-processing method based on active contours (commonly referred to as “snakes”) is proposed as a method for tracking UV and EUV flare ribbons and is tested on images from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE). This paper introduces the basic concepts of such an approach with a brief overview of the history and theory behind active contours. It then details the specifics of the snake algorithm developed for this work and shows the results of running the algorithm on test images. The results from the application of the developed algorithm are reported for six different TRACE flares (five in UV and one in EUV). The discussion of these results uses the output from an expert tracking the same ribbons by eye as a benchmark, and against these the snake algorithm is shown to compare favourably in certain conditions, but less so in others. The applicability of the automated snake algorithm to the general problem of ribbon tracking is discussed and suggestions for ways to improve the snake algorithm are proposed.  相似文献

Several X-ray-dim isolated neutron stars(XDINSs), also known as the Magnificent Seven,exhibit a Planck-like soft X-ray spectrum. In the optical/ultraviolet(UV) band, there is an excess of radiation compared to an extrapolation from the X-ray spectrum. However, the majority exhibits "spectral deviations": the fact that there is more flux at longer wavelengths makes spectra deviate from the Rayleigh-Jeans law. A model of bremsstrahlung emission from a nonuniform plasma atmosphere is proposed in the regime of a strangeon star to explain the optical/UV excess and its spectral deviation as well as X-ray pulsation. The atmosphere is on the surface of strangeon matter, which has negligible emission, and is formed by the accretion of ISM-fed debris disk matter moving along the magnetic field lines to near the polar caps. These particles may spread out of the polar regions which makes the atmosphere non-uniform. The modeled electron temperatures are ~100-200 eV with radiation radii R_(opt)~∞~5-14 km. The spectra of five sources(RX J0720.4–3125, RX J0806.4–4123, RX J1308.6+2127, RX J1605.3+3249, RX J1856.5–3754) from optical/UV to X-ray bands can be fitted well by the radiative model, and exhibit Gaussian absorption lines at ~100-500 eV as would be expected.Furthermore, the surroundings(i.e., fallback disks or dusty belts) of XDINSs could be tested by future infrared/submillimeter observations.  相似文献

Observations and analysis of magnetic activity phenomena in the atmospheres of cool stars—e.g., active regions, flares, stellar cycles—give insight into the fundamental processes in the heating of chromospheres, transition regions (TRs), and coronae. Diagnostics of magnetic activity can be found throughout the whole electromagnetic spectrum; from radio wavelengths, where gyrosynchrotron radiation arises from the quiescent and flaring corona, to optical, where important signatures are the Balmer lines and the Ca ii IRT and H&K lines, eventually to UV and X-rays, the latter mainly due to coronal thermal plasma. The UV and EUV ranges contains a plethora of emission lines that are powerful diagnostics for the warm (10?000 K) chromospheres, hot (100?000–800?000 K) TRs and very hot (1–10 MK) coronae. Also very weak coronal winds from cool stars have been identified and characterized thanks to high resolution UV spectra. Here I review the main results from UV observations of cool stars atmospheres and outline what can be expected from future UV imaging and spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

A detailed list of line identifications of the far UV spectrum of the O4I(n)f star Puppis (HD 66811) in the wavelength range 1168–1984 Å recorded on 16 April, 1981 with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) is presented. In this summary of the conference Space Astronomy: the UV Window to the Universe, held in El?Escorial, Spain, May 28 to June 1, 2007, I identify the important scientific questions posed by the speakers and the corresponding discoveries that future ultraviolet space instruments should enable. The science objectives described by the various speakers naturally fall into groups according to the needed instrumental requirements: wavelength coverage, spectral resolution, sensitivity, rapid access to targets, monitoring, and signal/noise. Although most of the science objectives presented during the conference require UV spectra in the 1,170–3,200 Å range, there are important science objectives that require spectra in the 912–1,170 Å range and at shorter wavelengths. I identify the limitations of present instruments for meeting these requirements. To avoid the upcoming UV dark age, important work must be done to properly build the World Space Observatory (WSO) and to plan future space missions.  相似文献

We present the results of a statistical study of the star formation rates (SFR) derived from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations in the ultraviolet continuum and in the Hα emission line for a sample of about 800 luminous compact galaxies (LCGs). Galaxies in this sample have a compact structure and include one or several regions of active star formation. Global galaxy characteristics (metallicity, luminosity, stellar mass) are intermediate between ones of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at high redshifts z>2–3. SFRs were corrected for interstellar extinction which was derived from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. We find that SFRs derived from the galaxy luminosities in the far ultraviolet (FUV) and near ultraviolet (NUV) ranges vary in a wide range from 0.18 M ?yr?1 to 113 M ?yr?1 with median values of 3.8 M ?yr?1 and 5.2 M ?yr?1, respectively. Simple regression relations are found for luminosities L(Hα) and L(UV) as functions of the mass of the young stellar population, the starburst age, and the galaxy metallicity. We consider the evolution of L(Hα), L(FUV) and L(NUV) with a starburst age and introduce new characteristics of star formation, namely the initial Hα, FUV and NUV luminosities at zero starburst age.  相似文献

The stellar field centred close to theh and Per double cluster is one of the 123 fields recorded in the galactic plane at 2000 Å by the balloon-borne stratospheric gondola of the SCAP-2000 programme. The analysis of the frame allows us to determine an ultraviolet colour indexU 1-V for more than 600 stars. Among these are stars belonging to theh and Per and Tr 2 clusters and to the PER OB1 association. The prevailing extinction law is found to produce greater extinction at 1965 Å than predicted by the mean extinction law. Moreover, the clouds responsible for the extinction are situated in the local arm and distributed in two layers with a very transparent interval. The comparison of theA v extinction and theHI and CO abundances leads us to assume the presence of a H2 cloud in front ofh and Per, in the second absorbing layer and, therefore, in the local arm. The two absorbing layers and the molecular cloud are perhaps in the plane of the Gould belt and associated with the expanding gas detected by Lindblad. A group of hot stars centred at the same distance as this molecular cloud has been detected and could form an association of OB stars in the local arm. Other, much more distant OB stars belonging to the Perseus arm of Efremov's list. Several stars which must have a very hot companion are detected in the field.  相似文献

Measurements of the equivalent width of the interstellar Lyman line from IUE spectra in the direction of the planetary nebulae NGC 7009 and BD+30°3639 are used to infer the H column density in these directions. Hydrogen 21 cm profiles are also used in connection with the ultraviolet data so that the expected rotation velocities and distances can be determined. The results are compared with recently published distances, in an attempt to distinguish between the short and long PN distance scales as applied to these objects.  相似文献

We present low resolution UV spectra of two polar systems, AM Her and QQ Vul from the observations taken by the IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) of the period between 1978–1996 and 1983–1996 for both systems respectively, to accomplish a large scale study of what happens to the ultraviolet flux of C IV 1550 Å spectral line during different orbital phases. Two spectra for both systems showing the variations in line fluxes and line widths at different orbital phases in high and intermediate states are presented. We concentrated on calculating the line fluxes and line widths of C IV 1550 Å emission line originating in the accretion stream. Our results show that there is spectral variability for the aformentioned physical parameters at different times, similar to that known for the light curve (Heise and Verbunt, Astron. Astrophys. 189:112, 1988; Gansicke et al., Astron. Astrophys. 303:127, 1995; Kafka and Honeycutt, Astron. J. 125:2188K, 2003). We attribute it to the variations of both density and temperature as a result of changing the mass transfer rate (Hutchings et al., Astron. J. 123:2841H, 2002; King and Lasota, Astron. Astrophys. 140L:16K, 1984) which is responsible for this spectral variability. Also we found that the line fluxes of AM Her are greater than the line fluxes of QQ Vul, while the line widths of both systems are approximately the same.  相似文献
