We discuss the design of jet-driven, radiative-blast-wave experiments for a 10 kJ class pulsed laser facility. The astrophysical motivation is the fact that jets from Young Stellar Objects are typically radiative and that the resulting radiative bow shocks produce complex structure that is difficult to predict. To drive a radiative bow shock, the jet velocity must exceed the threshold for strong radiative effects. Using a 10 kJ class laser, it is possible to produce such a jet that can drive a radiative bow shock in gas that is dense enough to permit diagnosis by x-ray radiography. We describe the design and simulations of such experiments. The basic approach is to shock the jet material and then accelerate it through a collimating hole and into a Xe ambient medium. We identify issues that must be addressed through experimentation or further simulations in order to field successful experiments.  相似文献

This paper presents some recent measurements on radiative shocks generated in a xenon gas cell using high power laser. We show new results on temperature and electronic density, and on radial expansion of the shock at various initial conditions (laser energy and gas pressure). The data obtained are compared with one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydro simulations.  相似文献

This paper deals with the radiative shock from both theoretical and numerical points of view. It is based on the whole experimental results obtained at Laboratoire d'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (LULI, école Polytechnique). Radiative shocks are high-Mach number shocks with a strong coupling between radiation and hydrodynamics which leads to a structure governed by a radiative precursor. These shocks are involved in various astrophysical systems: stellar accretion shocks, pulsating stars, interaction between supernovae and the interstellar medium. In laboratory, these radiative shocks are generated using high power lasers. New diagnostics have been implemented to study the geometrical shape of the shock and the front shock density. Data were obtained varying initial conditions for different laser intensities and temperature. The modeling of these phenomena is mainly performed through numerical simulations (1D and 2D) and analytical studies. We exhibit results obtained from several radiative hydrodynamics codes. As a result, it is possible to discuss about the influence of the geometry and physical parameters introduced in the 1D and 2D models.  相似文献

Supernovae launch spherical shocks into the circumstellar medium (CSM). These shocks have high Mach numbers and may be radiative. We have created similar shocks in the laboratory by focusing laser pulses onto the tip of a solid pin surrounded by ambient gas; ablated material from the pin rapidly expands and launches a shock through the surrounding gas. Laser pulses were typically 5 ns in duration with ablative energies ranging from 1–150 J. Shocks in ambient gas pressures of ~1 kPa were observed at spatial scales of up to 5 cm using optical cameras with schlieren. Emission spectroscopy data were obtained to infer electron temperatures (< 10 eV). In this experiment we have observed a new phenomena; at the edge of the radiatively heated gas ahead of the shock, a second shock forms. The two expanding shocks are simultaneously visible for a time, until the original shock stalls from running into the heated gas. The second shock remains visible and continues to expand. A minimum condition for the formation of the second shock is that the original shock is super-critical, i.e., the temperature distribution ahead of the original shock has an inflexion point. In a non-radiative control experiment the second shock does not form. We hypothesize that a second shock could form in the astrophysical case, possibly in radiative supernova remnants such as SN1993J, or in shock-CSM interaction.  相似文献

Transient seismic emission in flares remains largely mysterious. Its discoverers proposed that seismic transients are driven by impulsive heating of the flaring chromosphere. Simulations of such heating show strong shocks, but these are damped by heavy radiative losses as they proceed downward. Because compression of the gas the shock enters both heats it and increases its density, the radiative losses increase radically with the strength of the shock, leaving doubt that sufficient energy can penetrate into the solar interior to explain helioseismic signatures. We note that simulations to date have no account for strong, inclined magnetic fields characteristic of transient-seismic-source environments. A strong horizontal magnetic field, for example, greatly increases the compressional modulus of the chromospheric medium, greatly reducing compression of the gas, hence radiative losses. Inclined magnetic fields, then, must be fundamental to the role of impulsive heating in transient seismic emission.  相似文献

A series of experiments is underway using the Omega laser to examine radiative shocks of astrophysical relevance. In these experiments, the laser accelerates a thin layer of low-Z material, which drives a strong shock into xenon gas. One-dimensional numerical simulations using the HYADES radiation hydrodynamics code predict that radiation cooling will cause the shocked xenon to collapse spatially, producing a thin layer of high density (i.e., a collapsed shock). Preliminary experimental results show a less opaque layer of shocked xenon than would be expected assuming that all the xenon accumulates in the layer and that the X-ray source is a pure Kα source. However, neither of these assumptions is strictly correct. Here we explore whether radial mass and/or energy transport may be significant to the dynamics of the system. We report the results of two-dimensional numerical simulations using the ZEUS-2D astrophysical fluid dynamics code. Particular attention is given to the simulation method.  相似文献

In the present paper self-similar solutions have been investigated for the propagation of piston driven, radiative gas-dynamic shocks into an inhomogeneous ideal gas permeated by a current free azimuthal magnetic field for spherical symmetry. The effects of radiation flux and magnetic field together have been seen in the region of interest on the other flow variables. The total energy of the flow between the piston and the shock is taken to be dependent on the shock radius obeying a power law. The radiative pressure and energy have been neglected. This problem is more general than the others done so far. The word piston implies some means to drive plasma radially onwards.  相似文献

We suggest a model that explains the stratification peculiarities of the [O III] and Hα line emission from some of the ring nebulae around Wolf-Rayet stars. These peculiarities lie in the fact that the [O III] line emission regions are farther from the central star than the Hα regions, with the distance between them reaching several tenths of a parsec. We show that the radiative shock produced by a Wolf-Rayet stellar wind and propagating with a velocity of ~100 km s?1 cannot explain such large distances between these regions due to the low velocity of the gas outflow from the shock front. The suggested model takes into account the fact that the shock produced by a Wolf-Rayet stellar wind propagates in a two-phase medium: a rarefied medium and dense compact clouds. The gas downstream of a fast shock traveling in a rarefied gas compresses the clouds. Slow radiative shocks are generated in the clouds; these shocks heat the latter to temperatures at which ions of doubly ionized oxygen are formed. The clouds cool down, radiating in the lines of this ion, to temperatures at which Balmer line emission begins. The distance between the [O III] and Hα line emission regions is determined by the cooling time of the clouds downstream of the slow shock and by the velocity of the fast shock. Using the ring nebula NGC 6888 as an example, we show that the gas downstream of the fast shock must be at the phase of adiabatic expansion rather than deceleration with radiative cooling, as assumed previously.  相似文献

A high velocity radiative shock, or one moving into high-metallicity gas, provides an efficient means to generate a strong local UV photon field. The optical emission from the shock and precursor region is dominated by the photoionised gas, rather than by the cooling region, and the total optical + UV emission scales as the mechanical energy flux through the shock. In this paper, such models are applied to oxygen-rich supernova remnants and AGN. For AGN, the degree of magnetic support in the post-shock gas is an important parameter. LINER and cooling flow spectra can be understood as resulting from high velocity shocks without precursors, while Seyfert 1.5–2 galaxy emission line ratios result from high velocity shocks with their photoionised precursor HII regions. This model explains the problem of the high electron temperatures observed in both classes of object.  相似文献

We model a one-dimensional shock-tube using smoothed particle hydrodynamics and investigate the consequences of having finite shock-width in numerical simulations caused by finite resolution of the codes. We investigate the cooling of gas during passage through the shock for three different cooling regimes.
For a theoretical shock temperature of 105 K, the maximum temperature of the gas is much reduced. When the ratio of the cooling time to shock-crossing time was 8, we found a reduction of 25 per cent in the maximum temperature reached by the gas. When the ratio was reduced to 1.2, the maximum temperature reached dropped to 50 per cent of the theoretical value. In both cases the cooling time was reduced by a factor of 2.
At lower temperatures, we are especially interested in the production of molecular hydrogen, and so we follow the ionization level and H2 abundance across the shock. The effect of in-shock cooling is substantial: the maximum temperature the gas reaches compared with the theoretical temperature is found to vary between 0.15 and 0.81, depending upon the shock strength and mass resolution. The downstream ionization level is reduced from the theoretical level by a factor of between 2.4 and 12.5, and the resulting H2 abundance by a factor of 1.35 to 2.22.
At temperatures above 105 K, radiative shocks are unstable and will oscillate. We find that the shock jump temperature varies by a factor of 20 because of these oscillations.
We conclude that extreme caution must be exercised when interpreting the results of simulations of galaxy formation.  相似文献

We present the first C-shock and radiative transfer model that calculates the evolution of the line profiles of neutral and ion species like SiO, H13CO+ and HN13C for different flow times along the propagation of the shock through the unperturbed gas. We find that the line profiles of SiO characteristic of the magnetic precursor stage have very narrow linewidths and are centered at velocities close to the ambient cloud velocity, as observed toward the young shocks in the L1448-mm outflow. Consistently with previous works, our model also reproduces the broad SiO emission detected in the high velocity gas in this outflow, for the downstream postshock gas in the shock. This implies that the different velocity components observed in L1448-mm are due to the coexistence of different shocks at different evolutionary stages.  相似文献

We numerically simulate the evolution of the plane two-dimensional deformations of a contact discontinuity that is impulsively accelerated by a shock wave. We take into account the effects of radiative cooling and perturbation scale lengths on the dynamics and shape of the forming density inhomogeneities. For moderately intense shocks in a stellar wind and for strong shocks from a supernova, we show that the radiative cooling processes do not affect significantly the growth rate of the initial perturbations and the total mass of the forming condensations. However, the density of the matter compressed by the transmitted shock wave increases dramatically. At the same time, the contribution from long-wavelength perturbations to the deformation of the contact surface decreases significantly. In the case of shock propagation from a supernova, the initial conditions have been found to be a factor that can affect the morphology of the shocked interstellar medium.  相似文献

We investigate the structure of slow-mode MHD shocks in a plasma where both radiation and thermal conduction are important. In such a plasma a slow shock dissociates into an extended foreshock, an isothermal subshock, and a downstream radiative cooling region. Our analysis, which is both numerical and analytical, focuses on the nearly switch-off shocks which are generated by magnetic reconnection in a strong magnetic field. These shocks convert magnetic energy into kinetic energy and heat, and we find that for typical flare conditions about f of the conversion occurs in the subshock while the remaining 1/3 occurs in the foreshock. We also find that no stable, steady-state solutions exist for radiative slow shocks unless the temperature in the radiative region downstream of the subshock falls below 105 K. These results suggest that about 2/3 of the magnetic energy released in flare loops is released at the top of the loop, while the remaining 1/3 is released in the legs of the loop.  相似文献

We introduce a new Rigid-Field Hydrodynamics approach to modelling the magnetospheres of massive stars in the limit of very strong magnetic fields. Treating the field lines as effectively rigid, we develop hydrodynamical equations describing the one-dimensional flow along each, subject to pressure, radiative, gravitational and centrifugal forces. We solve these equations numerically for a large ensemble of field lines to build up a three-dimensional time-dependent simulation of a model star with parameters similar to the archetypal Bp star σ Ori E. Since the flow along each field line can be solved independently of other field lines, the computational cost of this approach is a fraction of an equivalent magnetohydrodynamical treatment.
The simulations confirm many of the predictions of previous analytical and numerical studies. Collisions between wind streams from opposing magnetic hemispheres lead to strong shock heating. The post-shock plasma cools initially via X-ray emission, and eventually accumulates into a warped, rigidly rotating disc defined by the locus of minima of the effective (gravitational plus centrifugal) potential. However, a number of novel results also emerge. For field lines extending far from the star, the rapid area divergence enhances the radiative acceleration of the wind, resulting in high shock velocities (up to  ∼3000 km s−1  ) and hard X-rays. Moreover, the release of centrifugal potential energy continues to heat the wind plasma after the shocks, up to temperatures around twice those achieved at the shocks themselves. Finally, in some circumstances the cool plasma in the accumulating disc can oscillate about its equilibrium position, possibly due to radiative cooling instabilities in the adjacent post-shock regions.  相似文献

Abstract— The primordial asteroid belt contained at least several hundred and possibly as many as 10,000 bodies with diameters of 1000 km or larger. Following the formation of Jupiter, nebular gas drag combined with passage of such bodies through Jovian resonances produced high eccentricities (e = 0.3‐0.5), low inclinations (i < 0.5°), and, therefore, high velocities (3–10 km/s) for “resonant” bodies relative to both nebular gas and non‐resonant planetesimals. These high velocities would have produced shock waves in the nebular gas through two mechanisms. First, bow shocks would be produced by supersonic motion of resonant bodies relative to the nebula. Second, high‐velocity collisions of resonant bodies with non‐resonant bodies would have generated impact vapor plume shocks near the collision sites. Both types of shocks would be sufficient to melt chondrule precursors in the nebula, and both are consistent with isotopic evidence for a time delay of ?1‐1.5 Myr between the formation of CAIs and most chondrules. Here, initial simulations are first reported of impact shock wave generation in the nebula and of the local nebular volumes that would be processed by these shocks as a function of impactor size and relative velocity. Second, the approximate maximum chondrule mass production is estimated for both bow shocks and impact‐generated shocks assuming a simplified planetesimal population and a rate of inward migration into resonances consistent with previous simulations. Based on these initial first‐order calculations, impact‐generated shocks can explain only a small fraction of the minimum likely mass of chondrules in the primordial asteroid belt (?1024‐1025g). However, bow shocks are potentially a more efficient source of chondrule production and can explain up to 10–100 times the estimated minimum chondrule mass.  相似文献

Radiative shocks (RS) occur in astrophysical systems and in high-energy density laboratory experiments. Aided by three dimensionless parameters, we propose a classification of RS into four types, integrating previous work that has focused independently on optical depth and on Mach number. Specific terms, such as a cooling function, a radiative flux, or radiative energy and pressure must be added to the Euler equations in order to model these various kinds of shocks. We examine how these terms correspond to the radiative classification regimes. In astrophysics, observed RS arise generally in optically thin material. Thus, radiation escapes without interaction with the surrounding gas, except perhaps to ionize it, and the energy loss in such shocks can be modeled by a cooling function Λ. In this case only the post-shock region is structured by the radiation cooling. We found the analytical solution for hydrodynamic equations including Λ ρ ε P ζ x θ for arbitrary values of ε, ζ, θ. This is a completely new result. An application of this calculation for the accretion shock in cataclysmic variables of polar type is given in astrophysical terms. We also draw a parallel between RS experiments performed using the LULI2000 laser facility, in France and the Omega laser Facility, in USA. RS developed in these laboratories are more or less optically thick. These high-Mach number RS present a radiative precursor.  相似文献

This paper explores the variations in radiative shock behavior originating from the properties of the system containing the shock. Specifically, the optical depth of the upstream region and the downstream region both affect the behavior of radiative shocks. Optically thick systems such as stellar interiors or supernovae permit only limited shock-induced increases in density. At the other limit, the radiation and shock dynamics in optically thin systems permits the post-shock density to reach arbitrarily large values. The theory of the shock structure is summarized for systems in which the upstream region is optically thin, common to some astrophysical systems and a number of experiments.  相似文献

Galaxy merger simulations have explored the behaviour of gas within the galactic disc, yet the dynamics of hot gas within the galaxy halo have been neglected. We report on the results of high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of colliding galaxies with metal-free hot halo gas. To isolate the effect of the halo gas, we simulate only the dark matter halo and the hot halo gas over a range of mass ratios, gas fractions and orbital configurations to constrain the shocks and gas dynamics within the progenitor haloes. We find that (i) a strong shock is produced in the galaxy haloes before the first passage, increasing the temperature of the gas by almost an order of magnitude to   T ∼ 106.3 K  . (ii) The X-ray luminosity of the shock is strongly dependent on the gas fraction; it is  ≳1039 erg s−1  for halo gas fractions larger than 10 per cent. (iii) The hot diffuse gas in the simulation produces X-ray luminosities as large as  1042 erg s−1  . This contributes to the total X-ray background in the Universe. (iv) We find an analytic fit to the maximum X-ray luminosity of the shock as a function of merger parameters. This fit can be used in semi-analytic recipes of galaxy formation to estimate the total X-ray emission from shocks in merging galaxies. (v) ∼10–20 per cent of the initial gas mass is unbound from the galaxies for equal-mass mergers, while 3–5 per cent of the gas mass is released for the 3:1 and 10:1 mergers. This unbound gas ends up far from the galaxy and can be a feasible mechanism to enrich the intergalactic medium with metals.  相似文献

We discuss a special case of formation of axisymmetric shocks in the accretion flow of ideal gas on to a Schwarzschild black hole: when the total energy of the flow is negative. The result of our analysis enlarges the parameter space for which these steady shocks are exhibited in the accretion of gas rotating around relativistic stellar objects. Since Keplerian discs have negative total energy, we guess that, in this energy range, the production of the shock phenomenon might be easier than in the case of positive energy. So our outcome reinforces the view that sub-Keplerian flows of matter may significantly affect the physics of the high energy radiation emission from black hole candidates. We give a simple procedure to obtain analytically the position of the shocks. The comparison of the analytical results with the data of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric numerical simulations confirms that the shocks form and are stable.  相似文献
