We study the interplay of clumping at small scales with the collapse and relaxation of perturbations at larger scales using N -body simulations. We quantify the effect of collapsed haloes on perturbations at larger scales using the two-point correlation function, moments of counts in cells and the mass function. The purpose of the study is twofold and the primary aim is to quantify the role played by collapsed low-mass haloes in the evolution of perturbations at large scales; this is in view of the strong effect seen when the large scale perturbation is highly symmetric. Another reason for this study is to ask whether features or a cut-off in the initial power spectrum can be detected using measures of clustering at scales that are already non-linear. The final aim is to understand the effect of ignoring perturbations at scales smaller than the resolution of N -body simulations. We find that these effects are ignorable if the scale of non-linearity is larger than the average interparticle separation in simulations. Features in the initial power spectrum can be detected easily if the scale of these features is in the linear regime; detecting such features becomes difficult as the relevant scales become non-linear. We find no effect of features in initial power spectra at small scales on the evolved power spectra at large scales. We may conclude that, in general, the effect on the evolution of perturbations at large scales of clumping on small scales is very small and may be ignored in most situations.  相似文献

We investigate the behaviour of galaxy clustering on large scales using the PSC z catalogue. In particular, we ask whether there is any evidence of large-scale fractal behaviour in this catalogue. We find the correlation dimension in this survey varies with scale, consistent with other analyses. For example, our results on small and intermediate scales are consistent those obtained from the QDOT sample, but the larger PSC z sample allows us to extend the analysis out to much larger scales. We find firm evidence that the sample becomes homogeneous at large scales; the correlation dimension of the sample is D 2=2.992±0.003 for r >30  h −1 Mpc. This provides strong evidence in favour of a universe that obeys the cosmological principle.  相似文献

We use semi-analytic models of galaxy formation combined with high-resolution N -body simulations to make predictions for galaxy–dark matter correlations and apply them to galaxy–galaxy lensing. We analyse cross-power spectra between the dark matter and different galaxy samples selected by luminosity, colour or star formation rate. We compare the predictions with the recent detection by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We show that the correlation amplitude and the mean tangential shear depend strongly on the luminosity of the sample on scales below 1  h −1 Mpc, reflecting the correlation between the galaxy luminosity and the halo mass. The cross-correlation cannot, however, be used to infer the halo profile directly because different halo masses dominate on different scales and because not all galaxies are at the centres of the corresponding haloes. We compute the redshift evolution of the cross-correlation amplitude and compare it with those of galaxies and dark matter. We also compute the galaxy–dark matter correlation coefficient and show that it is close to unity on scales above 1  h −1 Mpc for all considered galaxy types. This would allow one to extract the bias and the dark matter power spectrum on large scales from the galaxy and galaxy–dark matter correlations.  相似文献

There is currently a clear discrepancy in the proper motions measured on different angular scales in the approaching radio jets of the black hole X-ray binary GRS 1915+105. Lower velocities were measured with the Very Large Array (VLA) prior to 1996 than were subsequently found from higher resolution observations made with the Very Long Baseline Array and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network. We initiated an observing campaign to use all three arrays to attempt to track the motion of the jet knots from the 2006 February outburst of the source, giving us unprecedented simultaneous coverage of all angular scales, from milliarcsecond scales out to arcsecond scales. The derived proper motion, which was dominated by the VLA measurements, was found to be 17.0 mas d−1, demonstrating that there has been no significant permanent change in the properties of the jets since 1994. We find no conclusive evidence for deceleration of the jet knots, unless this occurs within 70 mas of the core. We discuss possible causes for the varying proper motions recorded in the literature.  相似文献

Of the many probes of reionization, the 21-cm line and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are among the most effective. We examine how the cross-correlation of the 21-cm brightness and the CMB Doppler fluctuations on large angular scales can be used to study this epoch. We employ a new model of the growth of large-scale fluctuations of the ionized fraction as reionization proceeds. We take into account the peculiar velocity field of baryons and show that its effect on the cross-correlation can be interpreted as a mixing of Fourier modes. We find that the cross-correlation signal is strongly peaked towards the end of reionization and that the sign of the correlation should be positive because of the inhomogeneity inherent to reionization. The signal peaks at degree scales (ℓ∼ 100) and comes almost entirely from large physical scales ( k ∼ 10−2 Mpc). Since many of the foregrounds and noise that plague low-frequency radio observations will not correlate with CMB measurements, the cross-correlation might appear to provide a robust diagnostic of the cosmological origin of the 21-cm radiation around the epoch of reionization. Unfortunately, we show that these signals are actually only weakly correlated and that cosmic variance dominates the error budget of any attempted detection. We conclude that the detection of a cross-correlation peak at degree-size angular scales is unlikely even with ideal experiments.  相似文献

Recently the numerical simulations of the process of reionization of the universe at z>6 have made a qualitative leap forward, reaching sufficient sizes and dynamic range to determine the characteristic scales of this process. This allowed making the first realistic predictions for a variety of observational signatures. We discuss recent results from large-scale radiative transfer and structure formation simulations on the observability of high-redshift Ly-α sources. We also briefly discuss the dependence of the characteristic scales and topology of the ionized and neutral patches on the reionization parameters.  相似文献

We consider the multifractal spectrum of fluctuations of the interplanetary magnetic field strengths observed by Advanced Composition Explorer at the Earth's orbit. We have found that the multifractal scaling of magnetic fields is observed both on small and large scales from minutes to days. The obtained multifractal spectrum is asymmetric for small scales, in contrast to a rather symmetric spectrum observed at scales larger than a day. Moreover, we show that the degree of multifractality of the magnetic fields on large scales is correlated with the solar activity and greater than that at the small scales, where the magnetic turbulence may become roughly monofractal.  相似文献

The Lyman α forest provides important constraints on the smoothness of the Universe on large scales. We calculate the flux distribution along the line of sight to quasars in a universe made of randomly distributed clumps, each of them with a Rayleigh–L'evy fractal structure with dimension D <2. We consider the probability distribution function of the normalized flux in the line of sight to quasars. We illustrate that the truncated clustering hierarchy model with D <2 shows far too many voids along the line of sight to quasars compared with the observed flux distribution and the distribution in a cold dark matter model. This supports the common view that on large scales the Universe is homogeneous, rather than fractal-like.  相似文献

We analyse scale dependence of redshift-space bias b and β  ≡ Ωm0.6/ b in the context of the halo model. We show that linear bias is a good approximation only on large scales, for k <0.1  h  Mpc−1 . On intermediate scales the virial motions of galaxies cause a suppression of the power spectrum relative to the linear one and the suppression differs from the same effect in dark matter. This can potentially mimic the effect of massive neutrinos, and the degeneracy can only be broken if the power spectrum is measured for k ≪0.1  h  Mpc−1 . Different methods to determine β converge for k <0.1  h  Mpc−1 , but give drastically different results on smaller scales, which explains some of the trends observed in the real data. We also assess the level of stochasticity by calculating the cross-correlation coefficient between the reconstructed velocity field divergence and the galaxies, and show that the two fields decorrelate for k >0.1  h  Mpc−1 . Most problematic are galaxies predominantly found in groups and clusters, such as bright, red or elliptical galaxies, where we find poor convergence to a constant bias or β even on large scales.  相似文献

We report on early results of magnetic field measurements towards a sample of young stellar objects. The results show a variety of field configurations, some of which can be explained by conventional models, while others cannot. We find that the field in some cases is curved over large scales and influenced by the gas kinematics in the local environment. This implies that, at these scales at least, the magnetic field plays a passive rôle in the star formation process.  相似文献

We propose and test a wavelet transform modulus maxima method for the automated detection and extraction of coronal loops in extreme ultraviolet images of the solar corona. This method decomposes an image into a number of size scales and tracks enhanced power along each ridge corresponding to a coronal loop at each scale. We compare the results across scales and suggest the optimum set of parameters to maximize completeness, while minimizing detection of noise. For a test coronal image, we compare the global statistics (e.g. number of loops at each length) to previous automated coronal-loop detection algorithms.  相似文献

We report the results of a cosmic shear survey using the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma, to a depth of   R = 25.8 ( z ≈ 0.8)  , over 4 deg2. The shear correlation functions are measured on scales from 1 to 15 arcmin, and are used to constrain cosmological parameters. We ensure that our measurements are free from instrumental systematic effects by performing a series of tests, including a decomposition of the signal into E - and B -modes. We also reanalyse the data independently, using the shear measurement pipeline developed for the COMBO-17 survey. This confirms our results and also highlights various effects introduced by different implementations of the basic 'Kaiser–Squires–Broadhurst' shear measurement method. We find that the normalization of the matter power spectrum on 8  h −1 Mpc scales is  σ8= (1.02 ± 0.15)(0.3/Ω m )1/2  , where the 68 per cent confidence limit error includes noise, sample variance, covariance between angular scales, systematic effects, redshift uncertainty and marginalization over other parameters. We compare these results with other cosmic shear surveys and with recent constraints from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe experiment.  相似文献

Most of the useful information about inflationary gravitational waves and reionization is on large angular scales where Galactic foreground contamination is the worst, so a key challenge is to model, quantify and remove polarized foregrounds. We use the Leiden radio surveys to quantify the polarized synchrotron radiation at large angular scales, which is likely to be the most challenging polarized contaminant for the WMAP satellite. We find that the synchrotron E- and B-contributions are equal to within 10% from 408–820 MHz with a hint of E-domination at higher frequencies. We quantify Faraday rotation and depolarization effects and show that they cause the synchrotron polarization percentage to drop both towards lower frequencies and towards lower multipoles.  相似文献

We report the experimental results of a study of the sources of 1/f α type noise (hereafter referred to as 1/f-type noise for the sake of brevity) in a total power radiometer. We find this noise to have two main sources in the radiometer: microwave amplifiers and the square-law diode detector with a Schottky barrier. We present methods for a substantial reduction of 1/f-type noise, which allow total power radiometer measurements to be performed with nominal sensitivity on time scales of up to 10 seconds. The sensitivity of the total power radiometer on time scales up to 100 seconds remains higher than that of a Dicke switched radiometer.  相似文献

We report on early results of submillimetre polarimetric measurements towards a sample of young stellar objects. The results allow us to infer the magnetic field structure and show a variety of configurations, providing evidence for axial, helical and pinched (i.e. ‘hourglass’) magnetic field configurations. We find that in some cases the field is curved over large scales, implying that it is influenced by the gas kinematics in the local environment, and that at these scales at least, the magnetic field plays a passive rôle in the star formation process.  相似文献

On March 23rd 1999 a set of TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) observations were taken in support of Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) / TRACE Joint Observing Program 83. The program is designed to look for coronal heating mechanisms operating at high cadence and to observe their dynamical effects on coronal loop density, temperature and magnetic structure. We present here a study of 27 small, dynamic brightening events seen in this data. These events are seen in the quiet-Sun areas surrounding the active region. The data itself consists of 157 171 Å 512×512 arc sec images at 1 arc sec resolution and 9 second cadence, a previously unavailable combination of cadence, resolution and image size. Three classes of events are introduced: complex, intermediate and simple. All three classes share the property of being dynamic on small time and length scales but differ in the complexity of their behavior. We find that the brightenings across all classes exhibit variations as part of a distribution of time scales (90–400 s) peaked around 228 s. The brightenings are no more than 5 arc sec in diameter. Motions between brightenings occur on time scales from 9 to 90 s and on length scales no greater than 10 arc sec. These motions have velocities estimated to be in the range 89–174 km s?1. The position of these events in the spectrum of previously observed coronal heating events is discussed.

This paper presents a comparison of the predictions for the two- and three-point correlation functions of density fluctuations, ξ and ζ , in gravitational perturbation theory (PT) against large cold dark matter (CDM) simulations. This comparison is made possible for the first time on large weakly non-linear scales (>10  h −1 Mpc) thanks to the development of a new algorithm for estimating correlation functions for millions of points in only a few minutes. Previous studies in the literature comparing the PT predictions of the three-point statistics with simulations have focused mostly on Fourier space, angular space or smoothed fields. Results in configuration space, such as those presented here, were limited to small scales where leading-order PT gives a poor approximation. Here we also propose and apply a method for separating the first-order and subsequent contributions to PT by combining different output times from the evolved simulations. We find that in all cases there is a regime where simulations do reproduce the leading-order (tree-level) predictions of PT for the reduced three-point function   Q 3∼ ζ / ξ 2  . For steeply decreasing correlations (such as the standard CDM model) deviations from the tree-level results are important even at relatively large scales, ≃20 Mpc  h −1. On larger scales ξ goes to zero and the results are dominated by sampling errors. In more realistic models (such as the ΛCDM cosmology) deviations from the leading-order PT become important at smaller scales   r ≃10 Mpc  h -1  , although this depends on the particular three-point configuration. We characterize the range of validity of this agreement and show the behaviour of the next-order (one-loop) corrections.  相似文献
