The dissimilarity of the results of solar and galactic proton flux measurements made on different spacecraft is pointed out. It is caused, in addition to instrument errors, by differences in the temporal and spatial conditions of the measurements. We suggest using statistical analysis of proton fluences calculated for different long time intervals, from half a year to 10 years, for the optimization of the interplanetary proton database. An example of such analysis is presented and a probabilistic model of total proton fluences at the Earth’s orbit outside the magnetosphere, constructed using the analysis, is described. A formalized method for separating proton fluxes in solar proton events from protons of galactic cosmic rays is suggested. A conclusion is made that sources of cosmic ray protons with energies of less than 4 MeV should be examined in more detail.  相似文献

Based on cosmic ray data obtained by neutron monitors at the Earth's surface, and data on near-relativistic electrons measured by the WIND satellite, as well as on solar X-ray and radio burst data, the solar energetic particle (SEP) event of 2005 January 20 is studied. The results show that this event is a mixed event where the flare is dominant in the acceleration of the SEPs, the interplanetary shock accelerates mainly solar protons with energies below 130 MeV, while the relativistic protons are only accelerated by the solar flare. The interplanetary shock had an obvious acceleration effect on relativistic electrons with energies greater than 2 MeV. It was found that the solar release time for the relativistic protons was about 06:41 UT, while that for the near-relativistic electrons was about 06:39 UT. The latter turned out to be about 2 min later than the onset time of the interplanetary type III burst.  相似文献

Satellite observations of solar proton events with a halo structure or an energetic storm proton event and an SSC are studied. It is pointed out that some SSC events are associated with a decrease in the few MeV cosmic ray fluxes while most are associated with a flux increase. The properties of halo protons and energetic storm protons are compared. It is hypothesized that the two events are similar in origin. The propagation mode of storm particles is discussed. Evidence is presented for a solar, rather than interplanetary origin of storm protons.  相似文献

The integral flux of low energy protons (> 10 MeV) observed by the University of New Hampshire cosmic ray detector aboard the Pioneer 9 spaceprobe has been compared with similar measurements of the near-Earth spacecraft Explorer 34 during the decay phase of the February 25–March 2, 1969 series of solar cosmic ray events. At this time the Pioneer 9 spaceprobe was 0.8 AU from the Sun and close to the Sun-Earth radial line. The ratio of integral fluxes as measured by the separated spacecraft can be calculated theoretically during the convective phase of the decay of these events and will depend on whether energy loss processes are operative. A comparison of the observed and theoretically calculated ratios suggests that the adiabatic energy loss process is operative.  相似文献

Quite an unusual behavior of the low-energy ion fluxes measured with the LECP and CRS instruments onboard Voyager 1, which is located in the outer heliosphere at a distance of about 90 AU, has been observed since July 2002 until recently (February 2003). This behavior can be interpreted as a possible manifestation of a combination of the global heliospheric disturbance produced by solar activity and the precursor of the outer heliosphere with its termination shock. The extremely large variability of the enhanced ion fluxes since the second half of 2002 in several energy channels from 0.5 to several MeV/nucleon is presumed to be associated with the sources of their acceleration near the termination shock. The simultaneous increase in the flux of protons with energies above 70 MeV may result from the easier penetration of Galactic cosmic rays because of the reduction in modulation at the declining phase in the current solar cycle 23 after the maximum in 2000 and from an admixture of the anomalous component accelerated at the termination shock.  相似文献

In association with solar flares accompanying type IV radio bursts of U-shaped spectrum, solar cosmic rays (MeV) and energetic electrons (keV) were generated. After acceleration, they were first stored in or near the flare regions and then gradually emitted into outer space. It seems that the streams of keV electrons generated the continuum radio emissions from metric to hectometric frequencies while passing through the outer coronal regions.  相似文献

The solar and galactic cosmic rays interact directly with lunar surface materials, and the dominant nature of interactions is essentially the complete absorption of corpuscles. These corpuscles damage the lattice structure, and induce a complex set of reactions in the materials producing various species. The cosmic ray damage of the lattice would not produce an amorphous layer, similar to that produced by the solar wind, because the solar wind erosion rate is faster than the cosmic ray-induced amorphous layer formation rate. The species formation rate considered in this paper are those produced by protons, the dominant component of cosmic rays. Protons produce H, H2, OH, H2O, and hydrogenated species of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, etc. These species, while migrating in the material, encounter oncoming cosmic ray corpuscles, and undergo a complex set of reactions. Although a variety of species are produced by protons, the dominant contributor to the atmosphere is H2. The H2 flux (molecules cm–2 sec–1) is about 1.5 × 105 as compared to the H flux of 8.4 × 101 and the H2O flux of 4.6 × 10–2. These fluxes are about 10–3 smaller than the fluxes of the same species produced by the solar wind protons. Thus the contributions of the cosmic ray-induced species to the atmosphere is very small compared to the solar wind-induced species. Although simulated experiments showed high concentractions of OH and H2O in the terrestrial materials of lunar type, these species concentrations in the lunar materials under the lunar environment is much smaller than those observed in the simulated experiments.  相似文献

Based on the reconnection theory of a flare and on recent observational and statistical findings, the problem of the initial acceleration of solar cosmic rays (SCR) is discussed. Simple estimates of the electric fields required to start the electron acceleration are obtained and the problem of proton ionization losses for overcoming the Coulomb barrier is considered. We take into account also the possible differences between proton and electron spectra from the very beginning of the acceleration process. Special attention is paid to the distribution functions of solar flare events in various parameters (peak fluxes and/or energy fluences in X-ray and radio wave bursts, in proton and electron emissions, etc.). It is shown that the distribution functions allow the interpretation of some scale and time flare parameters in terms of expected threshold effects. However, these functions are still insufficient to evaluate the relative share of different emissions in the global energy budget of a flare. In this context, a more promising approach is to derive the direct ratio between the number of accelerated protons,N p, and total flare energy,W f, within the frame of a certain acceleration model. It is argued that an absolute threshold for proton production (in Hudson's formulation) does not exist. Meanwhile, the flux and threshold energy of accelerated protons overcoming the Coulomb loss maximum, in fact, may depend heavily on the global output of flare energy.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the highest-energy cosmic rays might be protons resulting from collapsing cosmic strings in the Universe. We point out that this mechanism, although attractive, has important shortcomings, notably the fact that gamma rays produced along with the protons and those produced by the protons in their interactions with the cosmic background radiation generate cascades in the Universe and result in unacceptably high fluxes of cosmic gamma rays in the region of hundreds of MeV.  相似文献

A bi-directional charged particle telescope has been designed to distinguish electrons, muons and protons incident on the telescope from two opposite directions and to measure the energy of particles which stop in the central total energy detector of the system. This paper describes the design, test and evaluation of the telescope using radioactive sources, cosmic rays and low energy (8 MeV) electron beam from an accelerator. This telescope has been used in an experiment to measure the flux and energy spectrum of low energy electrons in 5 to 24 MeV energy interval and protons in 70 to 110 MeV energy region in the upper atmosphere. This experiment was carried out at high altitudes, using large size scientific balloon over the city of Hyderabad, India in Dec. 1984. Ground level low energy muon flux has been observed at Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.  相似文献

We argue that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may be the origin of the cosmic gamma-ray background radiation observed in the GeV range. It has theoretically been discussed that protons may carry a much larger amount of energy than electrons in GRBs, and this large energy can be radiated in the TeV range by synchrotron radiation of ultra-high-energy protons ( 1020 eV). The possible detection of GRBs above 10 TeV suggested by the Tibet and HEGRA groups also supports this idea. If this is the case, most of TeV gamma-rays from GRBs are absorbed in intergalactic fields and eventually form GeV gamma-ray background, whose flux is in good agreement with the recent observation.  相似文献

Using the observed data for wide-band type IV solar radio bursts, the onset time differences between the microwave and metric frequencies and the peak flux intensities of the metric component are analyzed as a function of the longitudinal position of the associated flares on the solar disk. It is shown that this time difference is dependent on the position of the associated flare and that the peak flux intensity reaches maximum when a flare occurs in the region 10 to 40 ° west of the central meridian of the solar disk. These results are explained by taking into account the eastward expansion of magnetic bottles which trap mildly relativistic electrons responsible for type IV bursts. Discussion is given on the relation between these magnetic bottles and shock waves which excite type II radio bursts.NASA Associate with University of Maryland, Astronomy Program.  相似文献

Particle bursts detected on the earth's surface during thunderstorms by various particle detectors originated from the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) initiated by free electrons accelerated in the strong atmospheric electric fields. Two oppositely directed dipoles in the thundercloud accelerate electrons in the direction of the earth's surface, and to the open space. The particle bursts observed by orbiting gamma ray observatories are called terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs, with energies of several MeV, only sometimes reaching tens of MeV); ones registered by particle detectors located on the ground – are called thunderstorm ground enhancements (TGEs, with energies, usually reaching 40-50 MeV). Balloons and aircraft in the troposphere register gamma ray glows (with energies of several MeV). Recently, high-energy atmospheric physics includes also, so-called, downward TGFs (DTGFs), intense particle bursts with a duration of a few milliseconds.Well-known extensive air showers (EASs) originate from the interactions of galactic protons and fully-stripped nuclei with the atmosphere atoms. EAS particles have very dense cores around the shower axes. However, high-energy particles in the EAS cores comprise a very thin disc of (a few tens of ns), and a particle detector traversed by an EAS core will not register a particle burst, but only one very large pulse. Only neutron monitor, by collecting delayed thermal neutrons from EAS core particle interactions with soil, can register particle bursts. We discuss the relation between short particle bursts available from the largest particle arrays with EAS phenomena. We demonstrate that the neutron monitors can extend the EAS “lifetime” up to a few milliseconds, a time comparable with DTGFs duration. The possibility to use the network of neutron monitors for high-energy cosmic ray research is also deliberated.Plain Language Summary: Short and extended particle bursts are registered in space, the troposphere, and the earth's surface. Coordinated monitoring of the particle fluxes, near-surface electric fields, and lightning flashes makes it possible to formulate a hypothesis on the origin of intense bursts and their relation to extensive air showers and atmospheric discharges. Analysis of the observational data and possible origination scenarios of particle bursts allows us to conclude that the bursts can be explained by the electron acceleration in the thunderous atmosphere and by gigantic showers developed in the terrestrial atmosphere by high-energy protons and fully-stripped nuclei accelerated in Galaxy.  相似文献

The anti-coincidence shield of the SIGMA telescope aboard GRANAT provides observations of solar X-ray and -ray bursts in the energy range 200 keV–15 MeV. The characteristics of the experiment are presented here as well as the observations of the solar bursts detected during the first year of operation. Among these events, two of these bursts associated respectively with a limb and a disk flare were observed with significant flux above 10 MeV. Advantage is taken of the experiment large detector area to examine fine time structures even at high energies ( 10 MeV).  相似文献

McMath plage region 8818 passed over the visible solar disk on May 17–31, 1967. It was very active from its first appearance on the Eastern limb, several times producing bright optical flares and hard X-ray emission, accompanied by intense type II, type IV and centimeter radio bursts. Nevertheless, no solar particles could be detected near the earth until the evening of May 23, when three bright flares were observed in close succession at 25°–28° E. During the following build-up of the solar particle flux over 36 hours, the galactic cosmic ray flux > 1 GeV decreased gradually by about 5%. The flux of solar particles decreased in two steps on May 25, both accompanied by decreases in the equatorial geomagnetic field. These field depressions are attributed to storm plasma ejected from the parent flare of the May 23 particle event. The propagation of solar particles from May 23 on thus appears to be strongly affected by storm plasma from the parent flare of the May 23 event, without any indications of solar particles being trapped in that plasma.A later particle event early on May 28 was also associated with a bright flare in McMath region 8818, at 33° W. This event displayed a rapid build-up, with electrons arriving first, and an exponential decay. A smooth proton peak, 20 min wide, was detected on May 30 closely associated with an SSC attributed to plasma ejection from the parent flare of the May 28 event.Between the geomagnetic storms beginning on May 25 and May 30 an anomalous daily variation was observed in the cosmic ray flux >1 GeV, the time of maximum falling 7–10 hours earlier than normal. Storm time increases in the flux of galactic cosmic rays were seen on May 26 when the equatorial geomagnetic field was depressed by more than 400 . Low latitude auroras were also observed during that time.On leave from the University of Uppsala, Sweden.  相似文献

Type IV radio bursts with wide band from microwave to metric-wave frequency are generally associated with solar proton flares. Recently, Castelli et al. (1967, 1968) have shown that the type IV radio bursts associated with solar proton flares show the U-shaped peak flux spectra with the minimum flux at decimetric frequencies. In this paper, the center-to-limb variation of such peak flux spectra is investigated in order to examine the effect of decrease of the peak flux at metric frequencies with increase of the angular distance from the central meridian of the Sun. It is shown that the U-shaped spectra are obtained independent of the position of proton flares, although the spectral form changes significantly in the case of the flares near the limb. It is further suggested that the U-shaped spectra consist of the two essentially independent components for microwave and metric-wave frequencies, respectively.  相似文献

The fluxes of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray emission are key parameters for modelling the ionosphere and upper atmosphere. A new aspect is considered in using these fluxes for diagnostics and short-term prediction of proton radiation danger from the flare. The EUV (λ < 105 nm) and soft X-ray (0.1–0.8 nm) fluxes were compared for two types of solar flares. The first type is followed by a strong enhancement in solar energetic (E >10 MeV) proton flux, the second is not followed by any enhancement in proton flux. It was discovered that the flare UV flux was considerably higher for flares with protons than for those without protons. Soft X-ray fluxes were approximately equal in both cases. An excess of EUV emission in proton flares grows with increasing proton flux. An analytic expression was found for the growth in proton flux as a function of the excess of EUV radiation at a given X-ray flux. These results can be used in predicting flare radiation danger.  相似文献

Measurements by balloon-borne instruments, data from the satellites Explorer 41 and 43 and riometer recordings were used to investigate the influence of magnetospheric processes on the precipitation of energetic solar protons related to the occurrence of two ssc's on 8–9 August 1972. The high-energy protons (Ep ? 30 MeV) had direct access to auroral-zone latitudes. The flux variations of low-energy (some MeV) protons in interplanetary space and the magnetosphere were different from those of the protons precipitated in the auroral zone. These low-energy protons were precipitated mainly during and after the ssc's. The importance of direct proton access, radial diffusion, pitch angle scattering and proton acceleration for the explanation of the low-energy proton behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

High energy protons produced by various sources of cosmic rays, e.g., supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts, participate in Pγ and pp interactions. Although pp interactions may be the dominant mechanism in our Galaxy, it is unclear how important pγ process is. We show that the upper bound on the fraction of total number of protons participating in pγ interactions inside all Galactic astrophysical sources of cosmic rays is 10%.  相似文献

At sufficiently low energies, cosmic ray protons capture electrons from interstellar Hi and become neutral. In the subsequent cascade to the ground state a Doppler-shifted Ly- photon may be emitted. The neutral cosmic ray will be excited collisionally by further encounters with the ambient interstellar gas, emitting additional Doppler-shifted Ly- photons. We give the form of the cosmic ray spectrum down to 10 keV, assuming that there is no cosmic ray injection below 1 MeV. The neutral fraction is evaluated as a function of energy, and the diffuse ultraviolet flux is calculated. Comparison is made with observations in the range 1225–1340 Å. We conclude that far more stringent limits on the flux of subcosmic rays may be obtained by consideration of the heating and ionization of Hi regions.  相似文献
