The instability of anisotropic disk systems with elongated stellar orbits has been investigated. N-body generalized polytropic models of stellar disks have been constructed. They are shown to be unstable with respect to the bar formation at any degree of anisotropy. This result differs from the results of the studies of such models by other authors. The bar pattern speed and amplitude have been found. The initial distribution of precession rates and the adiabatic invariants of stellar orbits have been calculated. A bar is shown to be formed in such systems due to the radial orbit instability.  相似文献

We describe initial results of a search for redshifted molecular absorption towards four millimetre-loud, optically faint quasars. A wide frequency bandwidth of up to 23 GHz per quasar was scanned using the Swedish–ESO Submillimetre Telescope at La Silla. Using a search list of commonly detected molecules, we obtained nearly complete redshift coverage up to   z abs= 5  . The sensitivity of our data is adequate to have revealed absorption systems with characteristics similar to those seen in the four known redshifted millimetre-band absorption systems, but none were found. Our frequency-scan technique nevertheless demonstrates the value of wide-band correlator instruments for searches such as these. We suggest that a somewhat larger sample of similar observations should lead to the discovery of new millimetre-band absorption systems.  相似文献

A generalized precompiler for systems performing algebraic manipulation of Poisson series has been written. It accepts a trigonometric superset of FORTRAN IV similar to Jefferys' TRIGRUN language (Jefferys, 1972) and generates a valid FORTRAN IV program which drives an abstract formula manipulation machine. This machine is designed to be generally compatible with any manipulation system, and has been implemented with two such systems. The precompiler is written in standard FORTRAN IV and was designed to allow simple conversion for use on most computers.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper will be to extend our previous investigation of the vibrational stability of rotating configurations (Kopal, 1981) to a similar investigation of the stability of the components of close binary systems which not only rotate, but also distort each other by tidal action. To this end, differential equations which govern first-order oscillations of arbitrary spherical-harmonic symmetry will be set up in Clairaut coordinates in which the radial coordinate is replaced by the potential which remains constant over level surfaces of equilibrium configurations; introduced by us in an earlier paper (Kopal, 1980), and their form detailed for surface distorted by second-, third-, and fourth-harmonic tides raised by the external mass; and their boundary conditions established. A solution of such differential boundary-value problems arising in connection with the stars of arbitrary structure remains, of course, a task for automatic computers. It may only be added that the tide-generating potential Ψ T established in this paper should enable us to study, by the same method, not only free, but also forced oscillations of the components of close binary systems, arising from orbital eccentricity of the respective couples, dynamical tides, or other causes likely to be operative in such systems.  相似文献

The post-Newtonian gravitoelectric secular rate of the mean anomaly ℳ is worked out for a two-body system in the framework of the General Theory of Relativity. The possibility of using such an effect, which is different from the well known decrease of the orbital period due to gravitational wave emission, as a further post-Keplerian parameter in binary systems including at least one pulsar is examined. The resulting effect is almost three times larger than the periastron advance . E.g., for the recently discovered double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 A+B it would amount to −47.79 deg yr−1. This implies that it could be extracted from the linear part of a quadratic fit of the orbital phase because the uncertainties both in the linear drift due to the mean motion and in the quadratic shift due to the gravitational wave are smaller. The availability of such additional post-Keplerian parameter would be helpful in further constraining the General Theory of Relativity, especially for such systems in which some of the other post-Keplerian parameters can be measured with limited accuracy. Moreover, also certain pulsar-white dwarf binary systems, characterized by circular orbits like PSR B1855+09 and a limited number of measured post-Keplerian parameters, could be used for constraining competing theories of gravity.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation will be to develop a theory of the light changes of the eclipsing systems in which one (or both) components oscillate(s) freely-radially or non-radially-in period(s) which may (though need not) be synchronized with that of their orbit. The light curves exhibited by systems with oscillating components will, in general, beasymmetric; and these oscillations may, in fact, be the cause of asymmetries observed in many eclipsing systems with evolved components (for which such oscillations-far from being anomalous-should be the rule rather than exception). The present paper will be concerned with an investigation of photometric phenomena arising from oscillations of theeclipsing components of close binary systems-cutting off (partly or wholly) the star (spherical or distorted) which undergoes eclipse.In Section 2, which follows a brief introductory survey aiming to place the entire subject in its historical perspective, a theory will be given of the light curves of close binary systems, in the frequency-domain, which are affected byradial oscillations of the eclipsed or eclipsing star; while Sections 3 and 4 will be devoted to a similar treatment ofnon-radial oscillation of the secondary (eclipsing) component distorted by equilibrium tides, or axial rotation with constant angular velocity. As will be shown, a frequency-domain approach will enable us to describe all these phenomena in algebraic terms; with auxiliary results required to this end relegated to three Appendices to the main text (in order not to render the latter too discursive and impede the main line of the argument).A similar treatment of photometric phenomena which may arise in such systems from oscillations of their components which undergo eclipse is being postponed for a subsequent communication.  相似文献

It is suggested that the development of the SKA will drastically change the face of radio astronomy in the 21st Century. A FAST-style SKA would admit observations of low contrast features, and would be the best design for studying the `dark ages' of the Universe (x≫ 1) where sub-arcmin total power instruments can usefully be employed. To date there have been no proposals for post-SKA, billion square-metra instruments; we speculate that mobile communication systems can be used. In the very distant future, SKA multi-beam systems could be used to collect signals reflected by Solar system bodies such as the asteroid belt. Nova-like binary systems are similar to W UMa-systems in their basic physical characteristics. Outwardly such systems are different — nova-like systems contain a white dwarf as a component, while both components of a W UMa-system are near the Main Sequence. A hypothesis is proposed, seeking the origin of contact W UMa-type systems in a fission of rapidly-rotating helium isothermal core of an evolved giant star. The contraction of the more massive component leads to the formation of a white dwarf and, consequently, to a transformation of a W UMa-type system into a nova-like system.  相似文献

The common convective envelope model for W UMa systems is used to analyse the light curves of the sixteen systems with spectroscopic mass ratios. From the derived photometric elements, an indication is found that Binnendijk's W-type systems have only shollow common envelopes, which is therefore suggested to be the cause of the difference between A- and W-type systems. It is also suggested that the structure of many contact binaries permits only a shallow common envelope and that further study of such envelopes will yield the modification in the model required if a closer fit to the W-type light curves is to be obtained.The model is also used with mass ratio as an additional photometric element to analyse the light curve of AW UMa. ESA's Infrared Space Observatory [ISO], scheduled for launch within the next 2–3 years, will place a complement of powerful infrared imagers and spectrometers into high orbit, with an operational life anticipated to be about 18 months. During this time, numerous scientific investigations of every conceivable astrophysical target will be made. In binary stellar systems, exoplanet searches have revealed planetary mass companions orbiting both in circumstellar and in circumbinary orbits. Modelling studies suggest increased dynamical complexity around the young stars that form such systems. Circumstellar and circumbinary disks likely exhibit different physical conditions for planet formation, which also depends on the stellar separation. Although binaries and higher order multiple stars are relatively common in nearby star-forming regions, surprisingly few systems with circumbinary distributions of proto-planetary material have been found. With its spectacular ring of dust and gas encircling the central triple star, one such system, GG Tau A, has become a unique laboratory for investigating the physics of circumsystem gas and dust evolution. We consider the time-scale of orbital circularization for those massive binary systems that produce WR+C systems. Using the observation that such systems have acquired circular orbits on a time-scale of the order of the Main-Sequence lifetime of the initial secondary, we estimate the intrinsic time-scale of the tidal interaction 0. We find that the tidal dissipation in such systems is very efficient and that, on the average, 0 ~ 103 yr.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the application of the classical theory of equilibrium figures of two rotating liquid masses to the case where bodies exhibit a radially stratified internal density distribution so that they can be considered as inhomogeneous bodies. The derived ellipsoidal shape solutions are applied to five real systems of equal-sized synchronous asteroids. Furthermore, internal inhomogeneity puts strong constraints on the surface grain density. A satisfactory model fit is achieved with internal densities of asteroids steadily increasing outwards. In particular, from such an approach we derived grain densities of the considered systems in agreement with their mineralogical composition inferred from reflectance spectroscopy. According to this new approach, 4492 Debussy, presently of unknown spectral type, is predicted to appear as a C-type object with a grain density on the order of 2 g/cm3.  相似文献

A geometric method based on the high-order 3D Voronoi tessellation is proposed for identifying single galaxies, pairs and triplets. This approach allows us to select small galaxy groups and isolated galaxies in different environments and to find the isolated systems. The volume-limited sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 spectroscopic survey was used. We conclude that in such small groups as pairs and triplets, segregation by luminosity is clearly observed: galaxies in isolated pairs and triplets are on average two times more luminous than isolated galaxies. We consider the dark matter content in different systems. The median values of mass-to-luminosity ratio are  12 M/L  for the isolated pairs and  44 M/L  for the isolated triplets, and 7 (8)  M/L  for the most compact pairs (triplets). We also found that systems in denser environments have greater rms velocity and mass-to-luminosity ratio.  相似文献

The evolution of close binary systems was followed for ten systems with the initial mass of the primary in the range 1–4M and with different initial mass ratios and initial separations. A brief discussion of the evolution of the contact component is presented for two separate cases: when the primary reaches its Roche lobe during central hydrogen burning (case A) and after the exhaustion of hydrogen in the center (case B).The models obtained are compared with observed semi-detached systems separately for massive (with total mass greater than 5M ) and low mass (with total mass below 4M ) binaries. It is shown that the contact components of the observed massive binaries are probably burning hydrogen in the core. On the contrary, the majority of contact components of the observed low-mass binaries are burning hydrogen in the shell. The observed distribution of such binaries as a function of different luminosity excesses of contact components seems to indicate that their origin is connected with case A rather than with case B.  相似文献

We investigate how the formation and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems can be affected by stellar encounters that occur in the crowded conditions of a stellar cluster. Using plausible estimates of cluster evolution, we show how planet formation may be suppressed in globular clusters while planets wider than ≳0.1 au that do form in such environments can be ejected from their stellar system. Less crowded systems such as open clusters have a much reduced effect on any planetary system. Planet formation is unaffected in open clusters and only the wider planetary systems will be disrupted during the cluster's lifetime. The potential for free-floating planets in these environments is also discussed.  相似文献

We investigate the conditions by which neutron star retention in globular clusters is favoured. We find that neutron stars formed in massive binaries are far more likely to be retained. Such binaries are likely to then evolve into contact before encountering other stars, possibly producing a single neutron star after a common envelope phase. A large fraction of the single neutron stars in globular clusters are then likely to exchange into binaries containing moderate-mass main-sequence stars, replacing the lower-mass components of the original systems. These binaries will become intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs), once the moderate-mass star evolves off the main sequence, as mass is transferred on to the neutron star, possibly spinning it up in the process. Such systems may be responsible for the population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) that has been observed in globular clusters. Additionally, the period of mass-transfer (and thus X-ray visibility) in the vast majority of such systems will have occurred 5–10 Gyr ago, thus explaining the observed relative paucity of X-ray binaries today, given the MSP population.  相似文献

Photometric properties of known and suspected members of the SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae are tabulated and discussed. The precessing disc model of superoutbursts gives a satisfactory quantitative explanation of the periods of superhumps and their changes during superoutburst. The systems such as WZ Sge and HV Vir that have very long intervals between superoutbursts are deduced to be beyond the orbital period minimum, and have degenerate secondaries. The systems such as V1159 Ori that have extremely short recurrence times have high rates of mass transfer and are the equivalent of the Z Cam subclass that occurs at longer orbital periods.A simplified analytical approach to the theory of accretion discs is able to explain the correlations between normal and superoutburst recurrence times. It also explains the slope of the plateau region of superoutbursts, and why the slope is shallower in the very short recurrence time systems.  相似文献
