VLA observations at 6 cm have been obtained for three hydrogen-deficient objects υ Sgr, V 348 Sgr, and A bell 58. A bell 58 was also observed at 2 cm. Only upper limits to the flux density could be set for these sources. A new radio source at 6 cm was found in the field of υ Sgr. The upper limit for 6 cm flux density of V348 Sgr sets an upper limit to its reddening asE(B–V) ≤ 0.65. The hydrogen deficient planetary nebula A 58 shows much lower radio flux than expected from the infrared-radio flux density relationship of planetary nebulae. The absolute magnitudeM v of the hydrogen deficient binary υ Sgr has been estimated as -4.8 ± 1.0 from the distribution of the interstellar reddening, polarization and interstellar lines of the surrounding stars. From the ANS observations obtained at the time of the secondary eclipse, it appears that the hotter secondary is surrounded by a disc with colours of a B8-B9 star. The λ 1550 CIv absorption line arising in the stellar wind does not show any change in strength during the secondary minimum. The upper limit to the mass-loss rate from the high temperature wind is estimated as ≤ 5 × 10-7 M⊙ yr-1 from the 2 cm and 6 cm radio observations. The new spectroscopic observation of MV Sgr obtained at ESO in 1987 July shows enhanced emission lines of He I λ3889, [SII] λ4068 relative to the observations discussed by Jeffreyet al. (1988). The presence of [SII] λ4068 indicates the presence of planetary-nebulae-like envelope around the star. Although the radial velocity of the absorption lines and Fe II emission lines do agree with the velocity given by Jeffreyet al., the [SII] λ4068 and probably He I emission lines appear to behave differently. The observeduvby and Hα indices of member stars of the Hyades and Praesepe clusters have been analysed in detail for rotation effects. The Alpha Persei, Pleiades and the Centaurus subgroup of the Scorpio—Centaurus association have been reanalysed using the observed indices instead of the extinction-corrected indices used earlier. The observed rotation effects from the analysis of these cluster data are found to be in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions of Collins & Sonneborn (1977). We have also analysed the α,c and (u − b) values of the member stars of NGC 1976, 2264, 2287, 2422, 4755,1C 2391, IC 2602 and IC 4665 for rotation effects. The results are found to be consistent with the theoretical predictions. The observed slopes of the rotation effects were used to determine the zero rotation main sequence values of the intermediate band photometric indices for selected clusters. We also corrected the observed indices for each star in each cluster using the theoretical predictions of Collins and Sonneborn and derived the ZRMS values for each cluster. The agreement between the two determinations is found to be good. The various ZRMS curves were utilised to derive the ZRZAMS values. A preliminary calibration of the absolute visual magnitudes as a function of α valid for ZRZAMS has also been derived. The ZRMS values of the intermediate band photometric indices for different clusters and the ZRZAMS values are listed as a function of α. on leave from Assumption College, Changanacherry, Kerala.  相似文献

Procedures and results of computations of model atmospheres andspectral energy distributions of R CrB, V4334 Sgr and relatedobjects are discussed. The intrinsicuvby and HΒ indices of member stars of α-Persei, Pleiades and Scorpio-Centaurus association have been analysed in detail for rotation effects. We report on the identification of cyclical changes in the orbital period of the eclipsing dwarf novae V2051 Ophiuchi and V4140 Sagittarii. We used sets of white dwarf mid-eclipse timings to construct observed-minus-calculated diagrams covering, respectively, 25 and 16 yr of observations. The V2051 Oph data present cyclical variations that can be fitted by a linear plus sinusoidal function with period of  22 ± 2 yr  and amplitude of  17 ± 3 s  . The statistical significance of this period by an F-test is larger than 99.9 per cent. The V4140 Sgr data present cyclical variations of similar amplitude and period of  6.9 ± 0.3 yr  which are statistically significant at the 99.7 per cent level. We derive upper limits for secular period changes of     and     for V2051 Oph and V4140 Sgr, respectively.
We have combined our results with those in the literature to construct a diagram of the amplitude versus period of the modulation for a sample of 11 eclipsing cataclysmic variables (CVs). If the cyclical period changes are the consequence of a solar-type magnetic activity cycle in the secondary star, then magnetic activity is a widespread phenomenon in CVs, being equally common among long- and short-period systems. This gives independent evidence that the magnetic field (and activity) of the secondary stars of CVs do not disappear when they become fully convective. We also find that the fractional cycle period changes of the short-period CVs are systematically smaller than those of the long-period CVs.  相似文献

IUE observations of the hydrogen-deficient irregular variable star MV Sgr obtained in 1980 June-October and also in 1979 November are discussed. These observations show a prominent λ 2200 absorption feature. A value ofE(B — V) = 0.55 is deduced from the strength of λ 2200 band assuming that this absorption is caused by interstellar medium. The dereddened continuum obtained at different times can be fitted to a theoretical energy distribution of a helium star model with Teff = 18000 K and log g = 2.5, similar to that of BD + 10 2179. This theoretical energy distribution, after applying interstellar extinction, givesV = 12.7 mag, agreeing with the observed visual magnitude of ≃ 13 in 1979 November and 1980 June-October. Even though there was no change in the continuum flux, the ultraviolet line-spectrum shows variations. The IUE spectra of 1980 October show enhanced (circumstellar) absorption lines of Fe II, Si II, O I, C I and others along with the absorption lines of a B star. In view of the similarity of the spectroscopic phenomena of MV Sgr with that of α Sco system, a model is proposed in which a cool companion star, surrounded by dust, occasionally blows gas towards the hotter hydrogen-poor B star. This model explains the irregular light variations and the spectroscopic phenomena. Phase‐resolved FUV observations of three Algol‐type interacting binaries (V356 Sgr, TT Hya, and RY Per) have been made during totality with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to map the location of the hot circumstellar plasma that produces emission lines of O VI, Si III,IV, S IV, C III, and N II. Since OVI shows very little variation in profile, strength, and velocity as the disk of the secondary occults the line formation region, we conclude that the emission originates in material that has a substantial flow perpendicular to the orbital plane (perhaps a bipolar jet). The behavior of the emission lines from the moderate‐ionization species suggests that the plasma producing these emission features has a large equatorial component. The extensiveUBV observations of SV Camelopardalis by Patkos (1982) have been analysed to derive the orbital elements of the system. The data were corrected for the effect of third body (Sarma, Sarma & Abhyankar 1985) and for the ‘RS CVn’ distortion wave (Sarma, Vivekanandarao & Sarma 1988). The cleaned data were used to obtain a preliminary solution by a modified version of Wellmann method (Sarma & Abhyankar 1979) from which we concluded that the primary eclipse is a transit. The final orbital elements of SV Cam were obtained by the modified version (Sarma 1988; Sarmaet al. 1987) of WINK program by Wood (1972). The colour and median brightness variation are discussed. From the spectroscopic mass functionf(m) = 0.118 M (Hiltner 1953), the absolute dimensions of the components are found to be 0.826 Mbd & 0.592 M and 1.236 R & 0.778 R for the primary and secondary components, respectively. We report here the results of a 4-yr K -band (2.2 μm) survey for large-amplitude variable stars in a     area centred on the Galactic Centre. A total of 409 likely long-period variables (LPVs) were detected, for which positions, amplitudes, average magnitudes and periods were obtained whenever possible. The surface density of LPVs is more than ten times greater than in the Sgr I Baade window at        
The limits of completeness arising from interstellar and circumstellar absorption are discussed. Most of the area suffers interstellar extinction of     The shorter-period LPVs are less luminous than the longer-period ones and may be slightly under-represented in the data. Extremely heavy extinction     which affects the probability of detecting variables, occurs in less than 25 per cent of the area.
Almost all of the LPVs are Miras or OH/IR stars, with periods ranging from 150 d to about 800 d. K -band counterparts have been found for 59 per cent of the 109 known OH sources in the field. The average period of the variables found is 427 d, while that of the OH/IR stars is 524 d. For comparison, the average period in the Sgr I window, which contains no known OH/IR stars, is 333 d and only two stars are detected with     The survey field also contains a number of long-period, large-amplitude variables that are not OH emitters.  相似文献

We present new photometric data and analyze long-term UBV observations of three candidates for protoplanetary nebulae—F supergiants with infrared excesses at high Galactic latitudes—IRAS 18095+2704, IRAS 19386+0155, and IRAS 19500-1709. All these stars exhibit quasi-periodic low-amplitude variations caused by pulsations against the background of long-term brightness trends. For IRAS 18095+2704=V887 Her, we have found a pulsation period of 109 days and revealed a linear brightness trend—the star brightens at constant (within the limits of the measurement errors) yearly mean color indices. The light curve of IRAS 19386+0155=V1648 Aql in 2000–2008 is represented by a wave with a fundamental period of 102 days whose modulation with a close period of 98 days leads to variations with a variable amplitude. V1648 Aql also shows a systematic rise in V brightness along with a reddening. IRAS 19500–1709=V5112 Sgr exhibits irregular pulsations with periods of 39 and 47 days. The long-term variability component of V5112 Sgr may indicate that the star is binary.  相似文献

We have used the Mopra Telescope to search for glycine and the simple chiral molecule propylene oxide in the Sgr B2 (LMH) and Orion KL, in the 3-mm band. We have not detected either species, but have been able to put sensitive upper limits on the abundances of both molecules. The 3σ upper limits derived for glycine conformer I are  3.7 × 1014 cm−2  in both Orion-KL and Sgr B2 (LMH), comparable to the reported detections of conformer I by Kuan et al. However, as our values are 3σ upper limits rather than detections we conclude that this weighs against confirming the detection of Kuan et al. We find upper limits for the glycine II column density of  7.7 × 1012 cm−2  in both Orion-KL and Sgr B2 (LMH), in agreement with the results of Combes et al. The results presented here show that glycine conformer II is not present in the extended gas at the levels detected by Kuan et al. for conformer I. Our ATCA results have ruled out the detection of glycine (both conformers I and II) in the compact hot core of the LMH at the levels reported, so we conclude that it is unlikely that Kuan et al. have detected glycine in either Sgr B2 or Orion-KL. We find upper limits for propylene oxide abundance of  3.0 × 1014 cm−2  in Orion-KL and  6.7 × 1014 cm−2  in Sgr B2 (LMH). We have detected fourteen features in Sgr B2 and four features in Orion-KL which have not previously been reported in the interstellar medium, but have not been able to plausibly assign these transitions to any carrier.  相似文献

A period analysis of CCD unfiltered photometry of V4745 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2003 #1) performed during 23 nights in the years 2003–2005 is presented. The photometric data are modulated with a period of  0.20 782 ± 0.00 003 d (4.98 768 ± 0.00 072 h)  . Following the shape of the phased light curve and the presence of the periodicity in all data sets with no apparent change in its value, we interpret this periodicity as orbital in nature and this is consistent with a cataclysmic variable above the period gap. We found a probable short-term periodicity of  0.017 238 ± 0.000 037 d (24.82 272 ± 0.05 328 min)  which we interpret as the probable spin period of the white dwarf or the beat period between the orbital and spin period. Therefore, we propose that nova V4745 Sgr should be classified as an intermediate polar candidate, supporting the proposed link between transition-oscillation novae and intermediate polars. The mass–period relation for cataclysmic variables yields a secondary mass of about  0.52 ± 0.05 M  .  相似文献

We report the results of our search for magnetic fields in a sample of 16 field Be stars, the binary emission‐line B‐type star υ Sgr, and in a sample of fourteen members of the open young cluster NGC3766 in the Carina spiral arm. The sample of cluster members includes Be stars, normal B‐type stars and He‐strong/He‐weak stars. Nine Be stars have been studied with magnetic field time series obtained over ∼1 hour to get an insight into the temporal behaviour and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in Be star atmospheres. The spectropolarimetric data were obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi‐mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four field Be stars, HD 62367, μ Cen, o Aqr, and ε Tuc. The strongest longitudinal magnetic field, 〈Bz〉 = 117 ± 38 G, was detected in the Be star HD 62367. Among the Be stars studied with time series, one Be star, λ Eri, displays cyclic variability of the magnetic field with a period of 21.12 min. The binary star υ Sgr, in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components with strong emission lines in the visible spectrum, is a magnetic variable star, probably on a timescale of a few months. The maximum longitudinal magnetic field 〈Bz〉 = –102 ± 10 G at MJD 54333.018 was measured using hydrogen lines. The cluster NGC3766 seems to be extremely interesting, where we find evidence for the presence of a magnetic field in seven early B‐type stars out of the observed fourteen cluster members (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Decline onset times were measured in long-term visual light curves for five R Coronae Borealis (RCB) variable stars. These included RY Sgr and V854 Cen, the two RCB stars previously reported to have a relationship between dust formation events and pulsational variations. Analysis of the decline epochs showed that all decline onsets for a given star obey a linear ephemeris tied to the object's dominant radial pulsation period. Thus, in addition to confirming the pulsation–decline correlation for RY Sgr and V854 Cen, this same behaviour was demonstrated in UW Cen, R CrB and S Aps for the first time. This general result firmly establishes the connection between radial pulsation and mass loss in the RCB stars. The dominant pulsation period of ≈40 d for all of these objects therefore represents the characteristic time-scale on which these stars produce dust.  相似文献

MERLIN and VLA observations of the galaxy M82 have detected a jet-like feature emanating from one of the compact sources, 44.01+59.6. The proximity of this source to the dynamical centre of M82 led us to suspect that it could be a weak active nucleus rather than an SNR. We imaged this source using the EVN at 15 mas and although it shows a compact shell-like structure which could be consistent with an SNR, we note that the EVN image shows a bright region within the source which is elongated along the jet direction. There are distinct similarities between this source and the Sgr A complex at the centre of our own Galaxy which contains the compact AGN, Sgr A*.  相似文献

We have secured optical spectroscopy of the nova V5584 Sgr at the Loiano Observatory, Italy, during the post outburst decline. V5584 Sgr showed the presence of nebular lines. We have estimated the decline time by two magnitudes, 27 days, the absolute magnitude at maximum, −7.2 to −7.7, the white dwarf mass, 0.8 to 0.9 M , the distance, 5.8 to 7.1 kpc.  相似文献

A new radial velocity study has been made of the highly eccentric, early-type binary BD -1° 1004 using spectra from the Kavalur Observatory. All available archival material has also been reexamined. An attempt has been made to correct for line ‘dragging’ by the secondary spectrum to improve the fit of the observed data to the orbital solutions. It is found that an earlier suggestion of apsidal regression is still possible although ω is probably constant within the errors. There remain problems and inconsistencies with other orbital elements, in particular K1 and γ  相似文献
