We extend a Jovian convective-cooling model to Uranus and Neptune. The model assumes that efficient interior convection prevails, so that escape of interior heat is governed by the radiative properties of the atmosphere. A comparison of the thermal evolution of Uranus and Neptune indicates that the larger amount of solar radiation absorbed in Uranus' atmosphere tends to differentially suppress the escape of interior heat. The model is shown to be consistent with recent infrared observations of the thermal balance of Uranus and Neptune, and with the presumed age of these planets.  相似文献

Previous work on the atmosphere of Uranus is extended to Neptune. The variation of effective temperature with latitude and season is evaluated within the approximations that the redistribution of internal heat in the interior results in the temperature at fixed pressure near the top of the convective region being independent of latitude and time, and that the transport of heat in the atmosphere is by means of radiation and convection. Meridional heat transport in the atmosphere is neglected. It is found that as the absorbed solar flux varies with season the flux of internal heat varies in the opposite sense such that the variation in the sum of the two is much smaller than the variation in either. The resulting variation in the flux radiated out the top of the atmosphere, which responds to the sum of the internal and absorbed solar fluxes, is substantially smaller than for Uranus because of the much larger flux of internal heat. For Neptune, the time-averaged effective temperature at the pole is ≈0.2°K greater than at the equator and the seasonal variation in the polar effective temperature is ≈0.8°K.  相似文献

The expression for the exospheric temperature in Jacchia's static diffusion models of the upper atmosphere has a discontinuous gradient at the poles. Therefore it cannot describe the true state of the upper atmosphere in the polar regions. Furthermore, it cannot be used to calculate quantities that depend on the derivative of the exospheric temperature, or the density, like pressure gradients, horizontal forces or horizontal heat fluxes. A modified expression for the exospheric temperature is suggested. This modification yields variables of state of the upper atmosphere that deviate little from Jacchia's values, but it has continuous gradient at the poles and is therefore more suitable for treating dynamical problems like the global wind pattern.  相似文献

Diurnal solar heating of Venus' surface produces variable temperatures, winds, and pressure gradients within a shallow layer at the botton of the atmosphere. The corresponding asymmetric mass distribution experiences a tidal torque tending to maintain Venus' slow retrograde rotation. It is shown that including viscosity in the boundary layer does not materially affect the balance of torques. On the other hand, friction between the air and ground can reduce the predicted wind speeds from ∽5 to ∽1 m/sec in the lower atmosphere, more consistent with the observations from Venus landers and descent probes. Implications for aeolian activity on Venus' surface and for future missions are discussed.  相似文献

Hourly interplanetary proton plasma data, measured by Helios-1 and Helios-2 heliocentric satellites over the period extending between the sunspot minimum and maximum of the 21rst solar cycle are analysed. This analysis gives an emphasis in the presence of a third type solar wind (intermediate) at 450 km s–1, appearing at solar minimum, during which large coronal holes are dominating in the Sun. This type of solar wind is hardly to be observed during the solar maximum period. Both Helios-1 and Helios-2 data give an average speed of the slow solar wind of 350 km s–1 for the period between these two extremes of solar activities. After correlation of the plasma temperature with its speed in different heliocentric distances, it comes out the stronger heating which takes place in distances shorter than 0.6 AU than in distances between 0.6 and 1.0 AU.A different behaviour of the radial proton temperature gradient in different solar activities appears after the calculation of the gradients as a function of solar wind speed and radial distance.  相似文献

The recent measurements of the vertical distribution and optical properties of haze aerosols as well as of the absorption coefficients for methane at long paths and cold temperatures by the Huygens entry probe of Titan permit the computation of the solar heating rate on Titan with greater certainty than heretofore. We use the haze model derived from the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) instrument on the Huygens probe [Tomasko, M.G., Doose, L., Engel, S., Dafoe, L.E., West, R., Lemmon, M., Karkoschka, E., See, C., 2008a. A model of Titan's aerosols based on measurements made inside the atmosphere. Planet. Space Sci., this issue, doi:10.1016/j.pss.2007.11.019] to evaluate the variation in solar heating rate with altitude and solar zenith angle in Titan's atmosphere. We find the disk-averaged solar energy deposition profile to be in remarkably good agreement with earlier estimates using very different aerosol distributions and optical properties. We also evaluated the radiative cooling rate using measurements of the thermal emission spectrum by the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) around the latitude of the Huygens site. The thermal flux was calculated as a function of altitude using temperature, gas, and haze profiles derived from Huygens and Cassini/CIRS data. We find that the cooling rate profile is in good agreement with the solar heating profile averaged over the planet if the haze structure is assumed the same at all latitudes. We also computed the solar energy deposition profile at the 10°S latitude of the probe-landing site averaged over one Titan day. We find that some 80% of the sunlight that strikes the top of the atmosphere at this latitude is absorbed in all, with 60% of the incident solar energy absorbed below 150 km, 40% below 80 km, and 11% at the surface at the time of the Huygens landing near the beginning of summer in the southern hemisphere. We compare the radiative cooling rate with the solar heating rate near the Huygens landing site averaging over all longitudes. At this location, we find that the solar heating rate exceeds the radiative cooling rate by a maximum of 0.5 K/Titan day near 120 km altitude and decreases strongly above and below this altitude. Since there is no evidence that the temperature structure at this latitude is changing, the general circulation must redistribute this heat to higher latitudes.  相似文献

This paper examines the solar heating of the Martian atmosphere during the 1971 global dust storm observed by Mariner 9. Radiative scattering as well as absorption is included by utilizing the delta-Eddington approximation to the full radiative transfer equation. The necessary optical parameters are generated by a Mie program which uses a size distribution and a complex refractive index inferred from a number of sources, particularly from recent analyces of Mariner 9 UVS and TV observations. Assuming uniform mixing of the dust, the solar heating per unit mass during a Martian global dust storm is remarkably uniform with height for small solar zenith angles. Heating rates may reach 80°K day? for overhead sunlight. Overall, 20% of the direct insolation is absorbed by the dust-laden atmosphere. Even optically thin widespread dust hazes may produce heating rates of several degrees Kelvin per day.  相似文献

Ground-based observations of Jupiter show that the planet's stratospheric and tropospheric thermal emission are anticorrelated. The observations can possibly be explained by latitudinal variations in cloud altitude. These variations cause differential stratospheric heating by sunlight which is reflected off the clouds and then absorbed within the stratosphere by visible and near-infrared bands of methane.  相似文献

A simple analytical model is developed from which we have calculated the temperature throughout the lunar interior resulting from internal heat sources and the imposition of surface temperature boundary conditions. The surface temperature is determined almost entirely by the balance of solar heating and surface reradiation; as a consequence this temperature is latitude dependent, decreasing towards the lunar poles. The internal solution shows that the latitude effect exists almost undiminished to great depths within the Moon. It is suggested that this dependence on latitude may have a significant effect on the Moon’s thermal evolution. Using the liquefaction model the high concentration of lunar maria at low latitudes may be explained.  相似文献

We study high-order acoustic modes which reside in the outer layers of the solar interior. Magnetic field effects are not taken into account in this paper as we wish first to filter out how the modal frequencies depend on physical characteristics of a particular model structure of the Sun. In particular, we are interested in how the modal frequencies of solar global oscillations depend on the thickness of the convection layer and on the temperature gradient of the solar interior below. The model we use consists of three planar layers: an isothermal atmosphere, while the convection layer and the interior have temperature gradients that are adiabatic and sub-adiabatic, respectively. The presence of a convection layer with a finite thickness brings in additional modes while the variations in temperature gradient of the interior cause shifts in eigenfrequencies that are more pronounced for the p modes than for the g modes. These shifts can easily be of the order of several hundreds of Hz, which is much larger than the observational accuracy.  相似文献

A model for the temperature inversion within the atmosphere of Saturn is proposed and is shown to be consistent with photometric data in the 17- to 25-μm region. The proposed model incorporates solar heating by some “aerosol,” with the aerosol heating per unit mass of the atmosphere being uniformly distributed throughout that portion of the atmosphere overlying the upper cloud deck. For a methane-to-hydrogen mixing ratio of 7 × 10?4, the model results suggest that 20% of the incident solar radiation is absorbed by the aerosol, while this is reduced to 16% for an enhanced methane mixing ratio of 2.1 × 10?3.  相似文献

An atmosphere containing 0.5 cm atm of ammonia is assumed on Io. Such an atmosphere will be frozen at the unilluminated pole during the solstices, but will evaporate at the equinoctial seasons. The ammonia atmosphere will explain: (1) the posteclipse brightenings and their observed times of occurrence and nonocurrence; (2) the observed departure from a two-layer model beating curve upon emergence from eclipse; (3) the discordant temperatures obtained at 10 and 20 μm; and (4) discordant temperatures obtained at 10 and 20 μm during the total phase of an eclipse by Jupiter. In order to explain items 3 and 4 above, a proton flux in Jupiter's magnetosphere of 1.1 × 109 cm?2s? at an energy of 0.5MeV at io's distance from Jupiter is assumed. This flux is 40 times the flux in Divine's (1972) “upper-limit” model of the Jovian radiation belts, while the proton energy is eight times less. The proton flux, plus the solar ultraviolet and infrared flux absorbed by the ammonia, will heat the atmosphere to 245 ± 10°K. At this temperature the occultation atmospheric upper limit allows the addition of 4 cmatm of nitrogen.  相似文献

Models of the interior of Uranus (Podolak, 1976) suggest that the abundances of such substances as CH4 are greatly enhanced with respect to solar abundances of heavy elements. Such enhancement leads to a new type of model atmosphere for Uranus, which agrees with observation if the internal energy flux is small (?10%) compared with the absorbed solar energy. An important feature of the models is the presence of a cloud of CH4 droplets whose top is at a temperature of ?90°K and a pressure of ?4atm. Above the cloud, the atmosphere is stable because of the rapid decrease of the thermal flux with depth. Being saturated, most of the observable gaseous CH4 is near the cloud; the CH4 abundance above the cloud, of the order of 5 km-am, is a very sensitive function of the cloud-top temperature.  相似文献

Based on model calculations, we show that ion-acoustic oscillations can be excited by heat fluxes in a plasma. We discuss the probable effect of ion-acoustic oscillations on the formation of temperature gradients at critical heat fluxes. The local critical heat flux in the transition region of the solar atmosphere is close to the well-known experimental heat flux from the corona into the chromosphere.  相似文献

A thermal regime of the troposphere of Venus is mainly determined by the greenhouse effect. A closeness of the real temperature gradient to the adiabatic one indicates that turbulent heat fluxes are also essential. Additional problems arise as only about 11% of the solar radiation absorbed by the planet reaches the surface, and most of it is taken up in the clouds at altitudes of 60–70 km. The present study summarizes experimental data on atmospheric parameters related to turbulence and estimates turbulent fluxes and turbulence characteristics. These data confirm the author's hypothesis of an anomalous downward turbulent heat flux in the free atmosphere. A normal upward turbulent heat flux exists in the planetary boundary layer.  相似文献

The principal features which distinguish the atmosphere on Venus from that of the Earth are the slow rotation of the planet, the large mass of the atmosphere, and the opacity of the atmosphere to long-wave radiation. The slow rotation of the planet gives rise, first of all, to nongeostrophuc dynamics (the atmosphere gas has a tendency to move along the pressure gradient), with the result that the region of the main influx of solar energy is located on one side of the planet, and the region of maximum cooling on the other. These considerations lead to a much simpler scheme of circulation than that in the Earth's atmosphere. The large mass of the atmosphere is the cause of a high thermal and mechanical inertia, which explains why the atmospheric circulation is asymmetrical relative to the solar-antisolar axis. The daily center of circulation is displaced to the second half of the Cytherean solar day, i.e., to the line of zero budget of thermal energy corresponding to a height of the Sun abobe the horizon of about 20°. The notions of cold and warm regions are very relative for Venus. While the horizontal temperature differences on the Earth may reach 100°, a mean horizontal temperature drop as small as 3° in the Cytherean atmosphere may be looked upon as an exceptional phenomenon. This high thermal homogeneity is due to a very large thermal inertia, with cooling at the poles never manifesting itself in the temperature fields obtained. The opacity of the Cytherean atmosphere to long-wave radiation results in vertical heat transfer by turbulence, mesoscale convection, and large-scale currents. This produces adiabatic stratification in the troposphere and a high temperature in the lower layers. These phenomena were studied in a general manner using two- and three-level models. Steps have recently been undertaken to investigate in greater detail the vertical structure of the troposphere on Venus using ten-level models. It appeared that the vertical dynamic structure of the troposphere is very much dependent on the distribution in height of the solar energy influx. In the greenhouse model, the entire atmosphere is affected by circulation. Pronounced velocity maxima are observed in the lower and upper layers. In a model with adsorption of solar radiation in the upper layer, the velocity is small in the lower layers, but it rapidly increases and changes its direction several times in the upper layers. The mean kinetic energy of the atmosphere proves to be two to three times smaller than in the greenhouse model.Attempts have been made in the calculations to find the principal modes of the statistical fluctuations. The results obtained show that atmospheric circulation may be represented by a global mean basic state following the rotation of the planet with deviations from that basic state which are indeterminate disturbances. The mean basic state exhibits a high degree of symmetry relative to the equator. On account of nonlinearity, the disturbances were observed in all the models independently of space and time resolution. This phenomenon appears to reflect the actual properties of the Cytherean atmosphere and has no bearing on the details of the numerical scheme.  相似文献

If Jupiter's and Saturn's fluid interiors were inviscid and adiabatic, any steady zonal motion would take the form of differentially rotating cylinders concentric about the planetary axis of rotation. B. A. Smith et al. [Science215, 504–537 (1982)] showed that Saturn's observed zonal wind profile extends a significant distance below cloud base. Further extension into the interior occurs if the values of the eddy viscosity and superadiabaticity are small. We estimate these values using a scaling analysis of deep convection in the presence of differential rotation. The differential rotation inhibits the convection and reduces the effective eddy viscosity. Viscous dissipation of zonal mean kinetic energy is then within the bounds set by the internal heat source. The differential rotation increases the superadiabaticity, but not so much as to eliminate the cylindrical structure of the flow. Very large departures from adiabaticity, necessary for decoupling the atmosphere and interior, do not occur. Using our scaling analysis we develop the anelastic equations that describe motions in Jupiter's and Saturn's interiors. A simple problem is solved, that of an adiabatic fluid with a steady zonal wind varying as a function of cylindrical radius. Low zonal wavenumber perturbations are two dimensional (independent of the axial coordinate) and obey a modified barotropic stability equation. The parameter analogous to β is negative and is three to four times larger than the β for thin atmospheres. Jupiter's and Saturn's observed zonal wind profiles are close to marginal stability according to this deep sphere criterion, but are several times supercritical according to the thin atmosphere criterion.  相似文献

An analysis of the 4571 Å line of neutral magnesium is presented in which one-dimensional macroscopic velocity fields are included. It is shown that gradients over restricted heights in the vertical and horizontal components of the velocity field of order -0.005 s–1 and -0.004 s–1 (such that velocity towards the observer decreases as height increases), respectively, result in asymmetries in the computed line profile similar to those observed. The heights in the solar atmosphere at which these velocity gradients exist are shown to be very critical in reproducing the observations. It was found that the best results were obtained when the gradients existed in the height range from 200 km to 300 km below the temperature minimum. The results indicate that for the Mg i 4571 Å line model calculations that do not include one-dimensional flow velocities may safely be compared with frequency-averaged observations.  相似文献

The solar corona, modelled by a low β, resistive plasma slab sustains MHD wave propagations due to footpoint motions in the photosphere. The density, magnetic profile and driver are considered to be neither very smooth nor very steep. The numerical simulation presents the evolution of MHD waves and the formation of current sheet. Steep gradients in slow wave at the slab edges which are signature of resonance layer where dissipation takes place are observed. Singularity is removed by the inclusion of finite resistivity. Dissipation takes place around the resonance layer where the perturbation develops large gradients. The width of the resonance layer is calculated. The thickness of the Alfvén resonance layer is more than that of the slow wave resonance layer. Attempt is made to distinguish between slow and Alfvén wave resonance layers. Fast waves develop into kink modes. As plasma evolves the current sheets which provide the heating at the edges gets distorted and fragment into two current sheets at each edge which in turn come closer when the twist is enhanced. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Triton's seasons differ materially from those of Pluto owing to four important differences in the governing physics: First, the obliquity of Triton is significantly less than Pluto's obliquity. Second, Triton's inclined orbit precesses rapidly about Neptune so that a complicated seasonal variation in the latitude of the Sun occurs for Triton. Third, Neptune's orbit is much more circular than Pluto's orbit so that the sunlight intercepted by Triton's disk does not vary seasonally. Finally, Triton's atmosphere cannot be saturated at the lower latitudes so that the mass of the atmosphere is controlled by the temperature of the high-latitude ices or liquids (polar caps), as for CO2 on Mars. The consequences of Triton's entire surface being covered with volatile substances have been examined. It is found that the circularity of Neptune's orbit then implies that Triton would have hardly any seasonal variation at all in surface temperature or atmospheric bulk, in spite of the complicated precessional effects of Triton's orbit. The only seasonal effect would be the migration of surface ices and liquids. This scenario is ruled out because it implies a column CH4 abundance much higher than that observed and because it quickly depletes the lower latitudes of volatiles. It is concluded that Triton's most volatile surface substances are probably relegated to latitudes higher than 35° and probably form polar caps. The temperature of the polar caps should be nearly equal, even during midwinter/midsummer when the insolation of the summer pole is greatest. If the summer pole completely sublimates during one of the “major” summers, Triton's atmosphere may begin to freeze out over the winter caps. It is therefore expected that Triton's atmosphere undergoes large and complex seasonal variations. Triton is currently approaching a “maximum southern summer”, and over the remainder of this century, a dramatic increase in CH4 abundance above the current upper limit of 1 m-Am may be witnessed.  相似文献
