A model for contact binary systems is presented, which incorporates the following special features: a) The energy exchange between the components is based on the understand-ing that the energy exchange is due to the release of potential, kinetic and thermal energies of the exchanged mass. b) A special form of mass and angular momentum loss occurring in contact binaries is losses via the outer Lagrangian point. c) The effects of spin, orbital rota-tion and tidal action on the stellar structure as well as the effect of meridian circulation on the mixing of the chemical elements are considered. d) The model is valid not only for low-mass contact binaries but also for high-mass contact binaries. For illustration, we used the model to trace the evolution of a massive binary system consisting of one 12M and one 5M star. The result shows that the start and end of the contact stage fall within the semi-detached phase during which the primary continually transfers mass to the secondary. The time span of the contact stage is short and the mass transfer rate is very large. Therefore, the contact stage can be regarded as a special part of the semi-detached phase with a large mass transfer rate. Both mass loss through the outer Lagrangian point and oscillation between contact and semi-contact states can occur during the contact phase, and the effective temperatures of the primary and the secondary are almost equal.  相似文献

In a previous paper, using Eggleton's stellar evolution code, we have discussed the structure and evolution of low-mass W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) type contact binaries with angular momentum loss owing to gravitational radiation or magnetic braking. We find that gravitational radiation is almost insignificant for cyclic evolution of low-mass W UMa type systems, and it is possible for angular momentum to be lost from W UMa systems in a magnetic stellar wind. The weaker magnetic activity shown by observations in W UMa systems is likely caused by the lower mass of the convective envelopes in these systems than in similar but non-contact binaries. The spin angular momentum cannot be neglected at any time for W UMa type systems, especially for those with extreme mass ratios. The spin angular momenta of both components are included in this paper and they are found to have a significant influence on the cyclic evolution of W UMa systems. We investigate the influence of the energy transfer on the common convective envelopes of both components in detail. We find that the mass of the convective envelope of the primary in contact evolution is slightly more than that in poor thermal contact evolution, and that the mass of the convective envelope of the secondary in contact evolution is much less than that in poor thermal contact evolution. Meanwhile, the rate of angular momentum loss of W UMa type systems is much lower than that of poor thermal contact systems. This is indeed caused by the lower masses of the convective envelopes of the components in W UMa type systems. Although the models with angular momentum loss for W UMa systems exhibit cyclic evolution, they seem to show that a W UMa system cannot continue this type of cyclic evolution indefinitely, and it might coalesce into a fast-rotating star after about 1200 cycles of evolution (about  7.0 × 109 yr  ).

An asynchronous magnetic white dwarf affects the rate of orbital evolution in AM Herculis binaries. An over-synchronous star leads to a positive orbital magnetic torque which reduces the rate of shrinkage of the secondary star's Roche lobe, and hence reduces the mass transfer rate. An opposing effect occurs as a result of the orbital angular momentum loss via secondary mass transfer in the absence of an accretion disc. The modification of the magnetic braking-driven synchronous mass transfer rate is calculated for a range of degrees of asynchronism, and its effect is compared at different orbital periods.  相似文献

The secular evolution of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), the systemic mass  ( M = M 1+ M 2)  and the orbital period of 114 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) were investigated after determining the kinematical ages of the subsamples which were set according to OAM bins. OAMs, systemic masses and orbital periods were shown to be decreasing by the kinematical ages. The first-order decreasing rates of OAM, systemic mass and orbital period have been determined as     per systemic OAM,     per systemic mass and     per orbital period, respectively, from the kinematical ages. The ratio of d log  J /d log  M = 2.68, which were derived from the kinematics of the present sample, implies that there must be a mechanism which amplifies the angular momentum loss (AML)     times in comparison to isotropic AML of hypothetical isotropic wind from the components. It has been shown that simple isotropic mass loss from the surface of a component or both components would increase the orbital period.  相似文献

By calculating the angular momentum transport during the evolution of a binary system, the variations of the rotational and revolution periods of the binary system under the tidal action, as well as the tidal effect on the evolution of the system are investigated. The calculated results indicate that when a close binary system evolves in the main sequence, the tidal friction will make the rotation and revolution approach to a closed state in a short time, but it takes a long time to attain a complete synchronization. After mass exchange started, the synchronous rotation can be changed more easily into the non-synchronous rotation for the semi-detached binaries. But for the contact binaries, the mass exchange is not strong enough to break the synchronization. The evolutionary tracks of the synchronization and non-synchronization models in the HR diagram are also compared with each other, and the result shows that for the non-synchronization model, the evolutionary curve of the primary star moves toward the direction of high luminosity and high effective temperature on the HR diagram at the mass exchange stage. Finally, by analyzing the statistical data of observations, it is found that the observed fact that the non-synchronous rotation exists in a period even longer than the tide-locking timescale can be explained by this model.  相似文献

Theoretical study indicates that a contact binary system would merge into a rapidly rotating single star due to tidal instability when the spin angular momentum of the system is more than a third of its orbital angular momentum. Assuming that W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) contact binary systems rigorously comply with the Roche geometry and the dynamical stability limit is at a contact degree of about 70 per cent, we obtain that W UMa systems might suffer Darwin's instability when their mass ratios are in a region of about 0.076–0.078 and merge into the fast-rotating stars. This suggests that the W UMa systems with mass ratio   q ≤ 0.076  cannot be observed. Meanwhile, we find that the observed W UMa systems with a mass ratio of about 0.077, corresponding to a contact degree of about 86 per cent would suffer tidal instability and merge into the single fast-rotating stars. This suggests that the dynamical stability limit for the observed W UMa systems is higher than the theoretical value, implying that the observed systems have probably suffered the loss of angular momentum due to gravitational wave radiation (GR) or magnetic stellar wind (MSW).  相似文献

Orbital period changes of ten contact binary systems (S Ant, ε CrA, EF Dra, UZ Leo, XZ Leo, TY Men, V566 Oph, TY Pup, RZ Tau and AG Vir) are studied based on the analysis of their     curves. It is discovered that the periods of the six systems, S Ant, ε CrA, EF Dra, XZ Leo, TY Men and TY Pup, show secular increases. For UZ Leo, its secular period increase rate is revised. For the three systems, V566 Oph, RZ Tau and AG Vir, weak evidence is presented that a periodic oscillation (with periods of 20.4, 28.5 and 40.9 yr respectively) is superimposed on a secular period increase. The cyclic period changes can be explained by the presence of an unseen third body in the three systems. All the sample stars studied are contact binaries with     .
Furthermore, orbital period changes of 27 hot contact binaries have been checked. It is found that, apart from AW UMa with the lowest mass ratio     , none shows an orbital period decrease. The relatively weak magnetic activity in the hotter contact binaries means little angular momentum loss (AML) from the systems via magnetic stellar winds. The period increases of these W UMa binaries can be explained by mass transfer from the secondary to the primary components, which is in agreement with the prediction of the thermal relaxation oscillation (TRO) models. This suggests that the evolution of a hotter W UMa star is mainly controlled by TRO. On the other hand, for a cooler W UMa star     , its evolution may be TRO plus AML, which coincides with the recent results of Qian.  相似文献

Photometric data on FG Hya obtained in 2002 and 2004 are presented. Three data sets show the exchange between A-type, W-type and the variable O'Connell effects. The photometric mass ratio  ( q = 0.1115 ± 0.0003)  derived from B and V light curves is almost the same as the spectroscopic mass ratio  ( q sp= 0.112 ± 0.004)  . The new photometric solutions reveal that FG Hya is a deep overcontact binary system  ( f = 85.6 ± 1.8 per cent)  with a spotted massive component. A period investigation, based on all available photoelectric or CCD times of light minimum, shows that the O–C curve of FG Hya can be explained as a combination of a secular period decrease and a cyclic variation with a period of 36.4 yr and an amplitude of 0.0289 d. By comparing the variation of the depth of the primary minimum with the change of the cyclic period, it is discovered that both of them may vary with the same cycle length of 36.4 yr and in the same phase. The variation of the light curve, the spotted primary component and the connection between the cyclic period change and the depth of the primary minimum, all may suggest that the G0-type component displays solar-type magnetic activity with a 36.4-yr cycle length. The long-time period decrease is interpreted by mass transfer from the more massive component to the less massive one or/and angular momentum loss due to mass outflow from the outer Lagrangian point.  相似文献

Orbital period variations of the Algol-type eclipsing binary, VW Hydrae, are analyzed based on one newly determined eclipse time and the other times of light minima collected from the literature. It is discovered that the orbital period shows a continuous increase at a rate of dP/dt = +6.34×10-7 d yr-1 while it undergoes a cyclic change with an amplitude of 0.0639 d and a period of 51.5 yr. After the long-term period increase and the large-amphtude period oscillation were subtracted from the O-C curve, the residuals of the photoelectric and CCD data indicate a small-amplitude cyclic variation with a period of 8.75 yr and a small amplitude of 0.0048d. The continuous period increase indicates a conservative mass transfer at a rate of dM2/dt = 7.89×10-8 M⊙ yr-1 from the secondary to the primary. The period increase may be caused by a combination of the mass transfer from the secondary to the primary and the angular momentum transfer from the binary system to the circumbinary disk. The two cyclic period oscillations can be explained by light-travel time effects via the presence of additional bodies. The small-amplitude periodic change indicates the existence of a less massive component with mass M3 > 0.53 M⊙, while the large-amplitude one is caused by the presence of a more massive component with mass M4 > 2.84 M⊙. The ultraviolet source in the system reported by Kviz & Rufener (1987) may be one of the additional components, and it is possible that the more massive one may be an unseen neutron star or black hole. The rapid period increase and the possibility of the presence of two additional components in the binary make it a very interesting system to study. New photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic observations and a detailed investigation of those data are required in the future.  相似文献

A model for the angular momentum transfer within the convection zone of a rapidly rotating star is introduced and applied to the analysis of recent observations of temporal fluctuations of the differential rotation on the young late-type stars AB Doradus (AB Dor) and LQ Hydrae (LQ Hya). Under the hypothesis that the mean magnetic field produced by the stellar dynamo rules the angular momentum exchanges and that the angular velocity depends only on the distance s from the rotation axis and the time, the minimum azimuthal Maxwell stress  | BsB φ|  , averaged over the convection zone, is found to range from ∼0.04 to  ∼0.14 T2  . If the poloidal mean magnetic field   B s   is of the order of 0.01 T, as indicated by the Zeeman–Doppler imaging maps of those stars, then the azimuthal mean field   B φ  can reach an intensity of several teslas, which significantly exceeds equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy. Such strong fields can account also for the orbital period modulation observed in cataclysmic variables and RS Canum Venaticorum systems with a main-sequence secondary component. Moreover, the model allows us to compute the kinetic energy dissipation rate during the maintenance of the differential rotation. Only in the case of the largest surface shear observed on LQ Hya may the dissipated power exceed the stellar luminosity, but the lack of a sufficient statistic on the occurrence of such episodes of large shear does not allow us to estimate their impact on the energy budget of the convection zone.  相似文献

The orbital period modulation, observed in close binary systems with late-type secondary stars, is considered in the framework of a general model that allows us to test the hypothesis proposed by Applegate. It relates the orbital period variation to the modulation of the gravitational quadrupole moment of their magnetically active secondary stars produced by angular momentum exchanges within their convective envelopes. By considering the case of RS CVn binary systems, it is found that the surface angular velocity variation of the secondary component required by Applegate's hypothesis is between 4 and 12 per cent, i.e. too large to be compatible with the observations and that the kinetic energy dissipated in its convection zone ranges from 4 to 43 times that supplied by the stellar luminosity along one cycle of the orbital period modulation. Similar results are obtained for other classes of close binary systems by applying a scaling relationship based on a simplified internal structure model. The effect of rapid rotation is briefly discussed finding that it is unlikely that the rotational quenching of the turbulent viscosity may solve the discrepancy. Therefore, the hypothesis proposed by Applegate is not adequate to explain the orbital period modulation of close binary systems with a late-type secondary.  相似文献

Well-determined physical parameters of 130 W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) systems were collected from the literature. Based on these data, the evolutionary status and dynamical evolution of W UMa systems are investigated. It is found that there is no evolutionary difference between W- and A-type systems in the   M – J   diagram, which is consistent with the results derived from the analysis of observed spectral type and of   M – R   and   M – L   diagrams of W UMa systems.   M – R   and   M – L   diagrams of W- and A-type systems indicate that a large amount of energy should be transferred from the more massive to the less massive component, so that they are not in thermal equilibrium and undergo thermal relaxation oscillation. Moreover, the distribution of angular momentum, together with the distribution of the mass ratio, suggests that the mass ratio of the observed W UMa systems decreases with decreasing total mass. This could be the result of the dynamical evolution of W UMa systems, which suffer angular momentum loss and mass loss as a result of the magnetic stellar wind. Consequently, the tidal instability forces these systems towards lower q values and finally to rapidly rotating single stars.  相似文献

The first 3-D non-linear hydrodynamical simulation of the inner convective envelope of a rotating low mass red giant star is presented. This simulation, computed with the ASH code, aims at understanding the redistribution of angular momentum and heat in extended convection zones. The convection patterns achieved in the simulation consist of few broad and warm upflows surrounded by a network of cool downflows. This asymmetry between up and downflows leads to a strong downward kinetic energy flux, that must be compensated by an overluminous enthalpy flux in order to carry outward the total luminosity of the star. The influence of rotation on turbulent convection results in the establishment of largescale mean flows: a strong radial differential rotation and a single cell poleward meridional circulation per hemisphere. A detailed analysis of angular momentum redistribution reveals that the meridional circulation transports angular momentum outward in the radial direction and poleward in the latitudinal direction, with the Reynolds stresses acting in the opposite direction. This simulation indicates that the classical hypothesis of mixing length theory and solid-body rotation in the envelope of red giants assumed in 1-D stellar evolution models are unlikely to be realized and thus should be reconsidered. We analyse the angular momentum evolution from the red giant branch (RGB) to the horizontal branch (HB) and along the HB. Using rotation velocities for stars in the globular cluster M13, we find that the required angular momentum for the fast rotators is up to 1–3 orders of magnitude (depending on some assumptions) larger than that of the Sun. Planets of masses up to 5 times Jupiter's mass and up to an initial orbital separation of ~2 au are sufficient to spin-up the RGB progenitors of most of these fast rotators. Other stars have been spun-up by brown dwarfs or low-mass main-sequence stars. Our results show that the fast rotating HB stars have been probably spun-up by planets, brown dwarfs or low-mass main-sequence stars while they evolved on the RGB. We argue that the angular momentum considerations presented in this paper further support the 'planet second parameter' model. In this model, the 'second parameter' process, which determines the distribution of stars on the HB, is interaction with low-mass companions, in most cases with gas-giant planets, and in a minority of cases with brown dwarfs or low-mass main-sequence stars. The masses and initial orbital separations of the planets (or brown dwarfs or low-mass main-sequence stars) form a rich spectrum of different physical parameters, which manifests itself in the rich varieties of HB morphologies observed in the different globular clusters.  相似文献

Equilibrium models of differentially rotating nascent neutron stars are constructed, which represent the result of the accretion-induced collapse of rapidly rotating white dwarfs. The models are built in a two-step procedure: (1) a rapidly rotating pre-collapse white dwarf model is constructed; (2) a stationary axisymmetric neutron star having the same total mass and angular momentum distribution as the white dwarf is constructed. The resulting collapsed objects consist of a high-density central core of size roughly 20 km, surrounded by a massive accretion torus extending over 1000 km from the rotation axis. The ratio of the rotational kinetic energy to the gravitational potential energy of these neutron stars ranges from 0.13 to 0.26, suggesting that some of these objects may have a non-axisymmetric dynamical instability that could emit a significant amount of gravitational radiation.  相似文献

A very well-known property of close binary stars is that they usually rotate slowly than a similar type single star. Massive stars in close binary systems are supposed to experience an exchange of mass and angular momentum via mass transfer and tidal interaction, and thus the evolution of binary stars becomes more complex than that of individual stars. In recent times, it has become clear that a large number of massive stars interact with binary companions before they die. The observation also reveals that in close pairs the rotation tends to be synchronized with the orbital motion and the companions are naturally tempted to invoke tidal friction. We here introduce the effect of tidal angular momentum in the model of wind driven non-conservative mass transfer taking mass accretion rate as uniform with respect to time. To model the angular momentum evolution of a low mass main sequence companion star can be a challenging task. So, to make the present study more interesting, we have considered initial masses of the donor and gainer stars at the proximity of bottom-line main sequence stars and they are taken with lower angular momentum. We have produced a graphical profile of the rate of change of tidal angular momentum and the variation of tidal angular momentum with respect to time under the present consideration.  相似文献

We present the light curve and photometric solutions of the contact binary AD Cnc. The light curve appears to exhibit a typical O'Connell effect, with Maximum I brighter than Maximum II by 0.010 mag. in V. From 1987 to 2000, the light curve showed changes of shape: the depth of the primary eclipse increased by about 0.056m while that of the secondary eclipse decreased by about 0.032m, so the difference between the primary and the secondary eclipses increased by about 0.088m, while there was no obvious variation in the O'Connell effect. Using the present and past times of minimum light, the changes in the orbital period of the system are analyzed. The result reveals that the orbital period of AD Cnc has continuously increased at a rate of dp/dt = 4.4 ×10-7day yr-1. The light curve is analyzed by means of the latest version of the Wilson-Devinney code. The results show that AD Cnc is a W-subtype contact binary with a small mass ratio of 0.267 and the two components are in poor thermal contact. AD Cnc has  相似文献

This paper presents charge-couple device (CCD) photometric observations for the eclipsing binary AW UMa. The V-band light curve in 2007 was analyzed using the 2003 version of the Wilson–Devinney code. It is confirmed that AW UMa is a total eclipsing binary with a higher degree of contact f=80.2% and a lower mass ratio of q=0.076. From the (OC) curve, the orbital period shows a continuous period decrease at a rate of dP/dt=−2.05×10−7 d yr−1. The long-term period decrease suggested that AW UMa is undergoing the mass transfer from the primary component to the secondary one, accompanied by angular momentum loss due to mass outflow L 2. Weak evidence indicates that there exists a cyclic variation with a period of 17.6 yr and a small amplitude of A=0. d 0019, which may be attributed to the light-time effect via the third body. If the existence of an additional body is true, it may remove a great amount of angular momentum from the central system. For this kind of contact binary, as the orbital period decreases, the shrinking of the inner and outer critical Roche lobes will cause the contact degree f to increase. Finally, this kind of binary will merge into a single rapid-rotation star.  相似文献
