We study the possibilities of the separation of solar electromagnetic and corpuscular impacts on the terrestrial lower atmosphere by examining their characteristic differences. We focus on the behaviour of the solar-meteorological correlation with respect to characteristic magnetic properties. Examples are given that the solar meteorological correlation - the efficiency of the solar impact - depends on the Sun-Earth attitude, the polarity of the solar main dipole field (and IMF) and the type of the geomagnetic events. This can explain the virtual disappearance or reversal of certain solar-meteorological effects.  相似文献

We have constructed synthetic solar spectra for the 2302-4800 cm−1 (2.08-4.34 μm) range, a spectral range where planetary objects mainly emit reflected sunlight, using ATMOS (Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy)/Spacelab-3 and Atlas-3 spectra, of which resolution is 0.01 cm−1. We adopted Voigt line profiles for the modeling of line shapes based on an atlas of line identifications compiled by Geller [Geller, M., 1992. Key to Identification of Solar Features. A High-Resolution Atlas of the Infrared Spectrum of the Sun and the Earth Atmosphere from Space. NASA Reference Publ. 1224, vol. III. NASA, Washington, DC, pp. 1-22], who derived solar line positions and intensities from contaminated high-resolution solar spectra obtained by ATMOS/Spacelab-3. Because the ATMOS spectra in these wavelength ranges are compromised by absorption lines of molecules existing in Earth's high-altitude atmosphere and in the compartment of the spacecraft, the direct use of these high-resolution solar spectra has been inconvenient for the data reductions of planetary spectra. We compared the synthetic solar spectra with the ATMOS spectra, and obtained satisfactory fits for the majority of the solar lines with the exception of abnormal lines, which do not fit with Voigt line profiles. From the model fits, we were able to determine Voigt line parameters for the majority of solar lines; and we made a list of the abnormal lines. We also constructed telluric-line-free solar spectra by manually eliminating telluric lines from the ATMOS spectra and filling the gaps with adjacent continua. These synthetic solar spectra will be useful to eliminate solar continua from spectra of planetary objects to extract their own intrinsic spectral features.  相似文献

The database of professor Rogers (1887), which includes wheat prices in England in the Middle Ages, was used to search for a possible influence of solar activity on the wheat market. Our approach was based on the following: (1) Existence of the correlation between cosmic ray flux entering the terrestrial atmosphere and cloudiness of the atmosphere. (2) Cosmic ray intensity in the solar system changes with solar activity, (3) Wheat production depends on weather conditions as a nonlinear function with threshold transitions. (4) A wheat market with a limited supply (as it was in medieval England) has a highly nonlinear sensitivity to variations in wheat production with boundary states, where small changes in wheat supply could lead to bursts of prices or to prices falling. We present a conceptual model of possible modes for sensitivity of wheat prices to weather conditions, caused by solar cycle variations, and compare expected price fluctuations with price variations recorded in medieval England. We compared statistical properties of the intervals between wheat price bursts during the years 1249-1703 with statistical properties of the intervals between the minima of solar cycles during the years 1700-2000. We show that statistical properties of these two samples are similar, both for characteristics of the distributions and for histograms of the distributions. We analyze a direct link between wheat prices and solar activity in the 17th century, for which wheat prices and solar activity data (derived from 10Be isotope) are available. We show that for all 10 time moments of the solar activity minima the observed prices were higher than prices for the corresponding time moments of maximal solar activity (100% sign correlation, on a significance level < 0.2%). We consider these results a direct evidence of the causal connection between wheat prices bursts and solar activity.  相似文献

We consider the effects of the absorption of solar XUV radiation by the Earth's atmosphere that were observed in the solar images obtained with the TEREK-K telescope onboard the Coronas-I satellite in May–June 1994 at low solar activity and with the SPIRIT instrumentation onboard the Coronas-F satellite in October–November 2001 at maximum solar activity. The solar images were recorded during the satellite occultation: in the 175- and 304-A spectral ranges onboard Coronas-I with the TEREK-K telescope and in the 175-, 304-, and 8.42-A ranges onboard Coronas-F with the SPIRIT instrumentation. Based on the XUV solar images obtained during atmospheric sounding, apart from the total absorption, we can determine the direction of the atmospheric density gradient and study the local absorption variations with altitude on spatial scales of less than 1 km. The described method can significantly supplement the data obtained in studies of the upper atmosphere by the methods of mass spectrometry, incoherent radar scattering, and the drag of orbital spacecraft.  相似文献

We present a new sub-class of type Ⅲ solar radio burst at the high frequencies around 6.0 GHz. In addition to a descending and an ascending branch on the dynamic spectrum, it has an inverted morphology different from the simpletype U-burst. We call it “partial N-burst“ because it is interpreted as the known N-burst minus its first branch. The partial N-burst presented here was detected among a reverse slope type Ⅲ (RS-Ⅲ) burst group prior to the type V solar radio continuum and was simultaneously recorded by two spectrometers at the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC, 5.20-7.60 GHz) and at Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO, 4.50-7.50 GHz) on 1999 August 25.After the N-burst and M-burst, the partial N-burst is a third piece of evidence for a magnetic mirror effect in solar radio observation, when the same electron is reflected at a pinched foot of a flare loop.  相似文献

Simultaneous solar total irradiance observations performed by absolute radiometers on board satellites during the quiet-Sun period between solar cycles 21 and 22 (1985–1987), are analyzed to determine the solar total irradiance at 1 AU for the solar minimum. During the quiet-Sun period the total solar irradiance, UV irradiance, and the various solar activity indices show very little fluctuation. However, the absolute value of the solar total irradiance derived from the observations differ within the accuracy of the radiometers used in the measurements. Therefore, the question often arises about a reference value of the solar total irradiance for use in climate models and for computation of geophysical, and atmospheric parameters. This research is conducted as a part of the Solar Electromagnetic Radiation Study for Solar Cycle 22 (SOLERS22). On the basis of the study we recommended a reference value of 1367.0 ± 0.04 W m-2 for the solar total irradiance at 1 AU for a truly quiet Sun. We also find that the total solar irradiance data for the quiet-Sun period reveals strong short-term irradiance variations.  相似文献

We report here a study of various solar activity phenomena occurring in both north and south hemispheres of the Sun during solar cycles 8&amp;#x2013;23. In the study we have used sunspot data for the period 1832&amp;#x2013;1976, flare index data for the period 1936-1993, H&amp;#x03B1; flare data 1993&amp;#x2013;1998 and solar active prominences data for the period 1957&amp;#x2013;1998. Earlier Verma reported long-term cyclic period in N-S asymmetry and also that the N-S asymmetry of solar activity phenomena during solar cycles 21, 22, 23 and 24 will be south dominated and the N-S asymmetry will shift to north hemisphere in solar cycle 25. The present study shows that the N-S asymmetry during solar cycles 22 and 23 are southern dominated as suggested by Verma.  相似文献

We present new in situ measurements of solar wind electron density as a function of heliolatitude. The data were obtained on Ulysses during its fast transit from south solar pole to north solar pole, at heliocentric distance about 1.5 AU, near the 1996 solar activity minimum. The density is measured accurately using the method of quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy with the Ulysses radio experiment, at a higher time resolution than the particle analysers on board. At low heliolatitudes (22° S to 21° N) the histogram of our data shows three main classes of flows with densities centered at 3.5, 7, and 12 cm-3, close to the values previously found by near-ecliptic space probes, in the region where fast coronal hole wind alternates with slower streamer belt wind. Poleward of 22° latitude where Ulysses encountered fast wind coming from coronal holes, the histogram of our data shows a single class of flow centered at 2.9 cm-3 with a roughly normal distribution. We find a density nearly independent of latitude, with the mean density from the south coronal hole 10% larger than that from the north, which may stem from a genuine north/south asymmetry and/or from the small decrease in solar activity during the time of the observations. In this work, we describe an analysis of the internal solar radiation fields in Saturn's atmosphere. The aim of this paper is to study how the solar radiation flux in optical wavelengths (0.25-1.0 μm) is attenuated, primarily by the effect of the aerosols located close to the tropopause level, retrieving also the corresponding solar heating rates. We use a doubling-adding method and previous results on the vertical cloud and haze structure of Saturn's atmosphere. Our study shows that the maximum penetration level (∼250 mbar) for these wavelengths is substantially higher than previously expected because of the huge optical thickness of the tropospheric haze described in all vertical cloud structure models. We compare our results with previous estimates and parameterizations for seasonal climate models and propose a new approach for future models, with an intense and concentrated heating rate close to the top level of the tropospheric haze. Given that our spectral range accounts for about the 70% of the total solar flux, and using previous estimates for the penetration levels of infrared radiation in Saturn's atmosphere, we conclude solar radiation effect is negligible at levels below 600 mbar. This result is fundamental for understanding the role of solar radiation in the general atmospheric circulation of Saturn.  相似文献

We present a novel experiment with the capacity to independently measure both the electron density and the magnetic field of the solar corona. We achieve this through measurement of the excess Faraday rotation resulting from propagation of the polarised emission from a number of pulsars through the magnetic field of the solar corona. This method yields independent measures of the integrated electron density, via dispersion of the pulsed signal and the magnetic field, via the amount of Faraday rotation. In principle this allows the determination of the integrated magnetic field through the solar corona along many lines of sight without any assumptions regarding the electron density distribution. We present a detection of an increase in the rotation measure of the pulsar J1801-2304 of approximately 170 rad m2 at an elongation of 0.96° from the centre of the solar disc. This corresponds to a lower limit of the magnetic field strength along this line of sight of >41.8 nT. The lack of precision in the integrated electron density measurement restricts this result to a limit, but application of coronal plasma models can further constrain this to approximately 0.5 μT, along a path passing 2.7 solar radii from the solar limb, which is consistent with predictions obtained using extensions to the source surface models published by the Wilcox Solar Observatory.  相似文献

The solar wind ions flowing outward through the solar corona generally have their ionic fractions freeze-in within 5 solar radii. The altitude where the freeze-in occurs depends on the competition between two time scales: the time over which the wind flows through a density scale height, and the time over which the ions achieve ionization equilibrium. Therefore, electron temperature, electron density, and the velocity of the ions are the three main physical quantities which determine the freeze-in process, and thus the solar wind ionic charge states. These physical quantities are determined by the heating and acceleration of the solar wind, as well as the geometry of the expansion. In this work, we present a parametric study of the electron temperature profile and velocities of the heavy ions in the inner solar corona. We use the ionic charge composition data observed by the SWICS experiment on Ulysses during the south polar pass to derive empirically the electron temperature profile in the south polar coronal hole. We find that the electron temperature profile in the solar inner corona is well constrained by the solar wind charge composition data. The data also indicate that the electron temperature profile must have a maximum within 2 solar radii. We also find that the velocities of heavy ions in their freeze-in regions are small (<100 km s-1) and different elements must flow at different velocities in the inner corona.  相似文献

Data of hourly interplanetary plasma (field magnitude, solar wind speed, and ion density), solar (sunspot number, solar radio flux), and geomagnetic indices (Kp, Ap) over the period 1970-2010, have been used to examine the asymmetry between the solar field north and south of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). A persistent yearly north-south asymmetry of the field magnitude is clear over the considered period, and there is no magnetic solar cycle dependence. There is a weak N-S asymmetry in the averaged solar wind speed, exhibited well at times of maximum solar activities. The solar plasma is more dense north of the current sheet than south of it during the second negative solar polarity epoch (qA < 0). Moreover, the N - S asymmetry in solar activity (Rz) can be statistically highly significant. The sign of the average N - S asymmetry depends upon the solar magnetic polarity. The annual magnitudes of N - S asymmetry depend positively on the solar magnetic cycle. Most of the solar radio flux asymmetries occurred during the period of positive IMF polarity.  相似文献
