Mafic rocks representative of the alkaline magmatism of the Alto Paranaíba Province in southwestern Minas Gerais, Brazil were studied by means of petrography, mineral, whole-rock and isotope geochemistry with the objective of better understanding this Cretaceous magmatism and the characteristics of the magma sources. Because of the variety and complexity of lithotypes examined in this research and the paucity of detailed studies of these Brazilian rocks in the literature, this study also attempts to establish parameters that allow for a clear distinction between kimberlite and kamafugite. Fifty-two occurrences are described and classified as kimberlite or kamafugite. Among the kamafugites, both ugandite (characterized by the presence of leucite) and mafurite (with kalsilite) end members have been characterized. Mineral compositions were found to be efficient in distinguishing between kimberlites, mafurites and ugandites in the province, primarily on the basis of phlogopite composition. The Re-Os isotope systematics permitted a better understanding of the relation of the sublithospheric mantle source to the magmatism in the region. Kimberlites, mafurites and ugandites have different 187Os/188Os ratios (0.117 to 0.129, 0.127 to 0.145 and 0.142 to 0.147, respectively). The Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotope systematics failed to indicate first-order differences between kamafugites and kimberlites, whilst 206Pb/204Pb ratios for the kimberlites are higher than those for the other rock types. Kimberlite and kamafugite isotopic compositions appear to be related to the mixture of at least two dominant mantle components: one with an isotopic signature similar to that of lithospheric peridotites, i.e., with 187Os/188Os ratios of the order of 0.118, similar to those observed in mantle-derived xenoliths entrained in kimberlites intruded in the Kaapvaal, Wyoming, and Siberian cratons; another with higher 187Os/188Os ratios of the order of 0.135, within the range of ratios reported for pyroxenite veins in alpine-type peridotites and ocean island basalts. Different melting depths of heterogeneous lithospheric sources by a mantle plume are suggested to explain the isotopic characteristics of the Alto Paranaíba Alkaline Province alkaline rocks.  相似文献

We describe the rationale for long-term monitoring of global climate forcings and radiative feedbacks as a contribution to interpretation of long-term global temperature change. Our discussion is based on a more detailed study and workshop report (Hansenet al., 1993b). We focus on the potential contribution of a proposed series of inexpensive small satellites, but we discuss also the need for complementary climate process studies and ground-based measurements. Some of these measurements could be made inexpensively by students, providing both valuable climate data and science educational experience.  相似文献

Variations in the isotopic composition of rocks derived from the upper mantle can be used to infer the chemical history and structure of the Earth's interior. The most prominent material in the upper mantle is the source of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). The MORB source is characterized by a general depletion in incompatible elements caused by the extraction of the continental crust from the mantle. At least three other isotopically distinct components are recognized in the suboceanic mantle. All three could be generated by the recycling of near surface materials (oceanic crust, pelagic sediments, continental lithospheric mantle) into the mantle by subduction. Therefore, the isotope data do not require a compositionally layered mantle, but neither do they deny the existence of such layering. Correlations between the volumetric output of plume volcanism with the reversal frequency of the Earth's magnetic field, and between the geographic distribution of isotopic variability in oceanic volcanism with seismic tomography suggest input of deep mantle material to surface volcanism in the form of deep mantle plumes. Volcanism on the continents shows a much wider range in isotopic composition than does oceanic volcanism. The extreme isotopic compositions observed for some continental magmas and mantle xenoliths indicate long-term (up to 3.3 Gyr) preservation of compositionally distinct material in thick (>200 km) sections of continental lithospheric mantle.  相似文献

Twenty-three volcanic rocks from the Setouchi volcanic belt, southwest Japan, were analyzed for Nd and Sr isotopic compositions for the purpose of examining the genetic relationships among the basalt, high-magnesium andesite (HMA) and evolved porphyritic andesite. The andesites have higher87Sr/86Sr (0.70487–0.70537) and lower143Nd/144Nd (0.512509–0.512731) than the basalts, i.e., 0.70408–0.70468 and 0.512691–0.512830, respectively. This result confirms earlier conclusions obtained from petrologic study that the andesites cannot be fractionation products of basaltic magma but that the andesitic and basaltic magmas were generated independently. On the basis of melting experiments for HMA and basalt, it is inferred that there is an isotopically stratified mantle beneath southwest Japan. Evolved porphyritic andesites have essentially identical Sr and Nd isotopic ratios to HMA and can be derived by fractionation of primary andesitic magma. A model to produce orogenic andesite is proposed on petrologic, experimental and isotopic bases.  相似文献

The method of finite differences is applied to the computation of multi-dimensional synthetic seismograms. This paper gives a study of the mathematical and numerical formulations of the problem, the boundary conditions, the convergence conditions and how to simulate the source in both one solid or a liquid. It is shown that the numerical formulation chosen is valid both for direct and inverse problems (i.e. for modeling and migration). This formulation makes it possible to use the normal incidence reflection coefficients for P and S waves, whether they travel horizontally or vertically. The examples shown have been chosen on purpose in order to be easily interpreted. They do not give a full idea of the possibilities of the algorithm which allows to consider non-planar interfaces, except close to the vertical axis.  相似文献

A cluster of minor Mississippi Valley-type deposits occurs in northwestern Ohio. The district, which forms a northeasterly trending belt that cuts across the Findlay Arch, extends from the Indiana border to the Lake Erie Islands. The minerals of the deposits — chiefly celestite, fluorite and sphalerite with lesser amounts of barite and galena — show variation in both geographic and stratigraphic distribution. Dolomites of Middle Silurian to Middle Devonian age, which are the host rocks, also form an important aquifer system. The deposits are of interest because they might be indicators of economic mineralization at depth.Through a reconnaissance study, one-hundred ground-water samples from shallow wells (less than 50 m deep) were collected across an area of approximately 19 000 km2. Recharge takes place in the southern part of the area while ground-water flow is northward towards Lake Erie. The majority of the samples are high in sulfate with the source being evaporites within the carbonate sequence. The remainder of the water samples are rich in bicarbonate. Trend surface maps for the major constituents indicate that the ground-water chemistry for the region is established chiefly by the lithology and the flow system. Trend surface maps for F, Sr and Ba reflect the geographic distribution of the minerals in the deposits. Correlations are weakened, however, due to the influence of geochemical barriers such as SO42− on Ba and Sr, and Ca on F. The map for Pb follows the trends of the major constituents instead of the mineralization.In a detailed study across northwestern Sandusky County, which lies near the center of the district, 46 samples were collected in an area of 78 km2. Trend surface maps for Ca, Mg, SO42− and total dissolved solids reflect the chemistry of the bedrock and display concentrations that increase along the local flow path. Maps for F, Sr and Ba correlate with mineralization in the vicinity, the first of these displaying a local trend and the last two correlating with regional trends.  相似文献

A linear relationship exists between the mean volume of garnet porphyroblasts and the squared inverse of mean matrix grain diameter for six samples of garnetiferous mica quartzite with identical thermal histories and similar mineralogy and modes. This relationship accords with theoretical predictions of the dependence of intergranular diffusive fluxes on the volume fraction of grain edges that function as diffusional pathways during porphyroblast growth. The impact of matrix grain size is large: compared to a rock with a 1‐mm matrix, a rock with a 10‐μm matrix would experience rates of diffusion‐controlled porphyroblast growth that are 10 000 times faster, and characteristic length scales for chemical equilibration that are 100 times larger. Precursor grain sizes may therefore exert a major influence on crystallization kinetics. If matrix coarsening occurs during prograde reaction, a decrease in the volume fraction of diffusional pathways will tend to counteract the exponential thermal increase in diffusive fluxes. The impact of such matrix grain growth, although difficult to assess without firm knowledge of coarsening rates in polymineralic aggregates, might be significant for matrices finer than c. 100 μm at temperatures above c. 500–600 °C, but is likely negligible for coarser grain sizes and lower temperatures.  相似文献

The Re–Os system has now been applied to a wide variety of problems in the solid earth sciences. This review concentrates on applications of the Re–Os system to understanding the age and composition of the mantle and the role that various materials in the mantle play in generating surface magmas. The progress in understanding Re–Os systematics in natural materials has accompanied dramatic advances in the understanding of the geochemical behavior of Re and the platinum group elements. This group of elements and the two isotopic systems (Pt–Os and Re–Os) they contain provide a view of Earth processes that are controlled not by the silicate phases the make up most of the outer portion of Earth, but by sulfide, oxide and metal phases that constitute but a trace of the mantle and crust. These phases are sensitive to oxygen and sulfur fugacities in ways that silicates are not. Consequently, the Re–Os and Pt–Os systems provide a new view into the geochemical evolution of the solid Earth that is complementary to that obtained through the study of traditional radiometric systems that are based on lithophile elements.  相似文献
