We discuss a solar flare microwave burst complex, which included a major structure consisting of some 13 spikes of 60 ms FWHM each, observed 21 May, 1984 at 90 GHz (3 mm). It was associated with a simultaneous very hard X-ray burst complex. We suggest that the individual spikes of both bursts were caused by the same electron population: the X-bursts by their bremsstrahlung, and the microwave bursts by their gyrosynchrotron emission. This latter conclusion is based on the evidence that the radio turnover frequency was 150 GHz. It follows that the emission sources were characterized by an electron density of about 1011 cm–3, a temperature of 5 × 108 K and a magnetic field of about 1400–2000 G. They had a size of about 350 km; if the energy release is caused by reconnection the sources of primary instability could have been smaller and in the form of thin sheets with reconnection speed at a fraction of the Alfvén velocity and burst-like energy injections of 1027 erg during about 50 ms each. The energized plasma knots lost their injection energy by saturated convective flux (collisionless conduction) in about 30 ms.  相似文献

We studied the acceleration conditions in the small but fairly energetic flare of May 21, 1984 at 1326 UT. The most pronounced aspect of this flare was a series of 13 microwave/X-ray spikes, each lasting for about 0.1 s. A previous study has shown that each of these was due to a series of successive sudden formations of small plasma knots of high-energy particles. Each of these knots lost its energy in about 50 ms. In the present study we show that these knots can originate by the process of X-type (3-D) flux tube coalescence. The predicted rise time (30 to 50 ms) and energy are in good agreement with the observationally derived parameters.  相似文献

At the very start of the impulsive phase of two solar flares the temperature derived from medium-energy ( 16 keV) X-ray countrates was observed to rise abruptly, by several times 107 K above the temperature derived from low-energy X-ray ( 7 keV) countrates. The difference between the two temperatures relaxed to zero thereafter, quasi-exponentially, with a characteristic time of 1.5 min. This differential temperature variation appears to mimique the differences between the ionic kinetic and the electron temperatures derived from spectral observations (Figures 1 and 2).These observations are explained in a quantitatively supported model of the flare kernel (Figure 4) in which the kernel is heated by electron beams from above. The low-energy electrons are stopped above the kernel and only the medium and high energy electrons penetrate down to the top of the chromosphere, causing heating of the chromospheric gas to about 50 MK, and ablation (evaporation), leading to the abrupt formation of a superhot flare kernel and a likely superhot dome above it (Figure 4), through which gas rises up and spreads out convectively, while cooling down in approximately the same time (45 s). The heating process lasts only for a few minutes. The difference between the Doppler temperature and the electron temperature derived from line intensity ratios or from low energy countrate ratios is ascribed to truncation of the tail of the electron energy distribution in the kernel. The kernel is about 2500 km deep; H emission is radiated by a thin layer at its basis.  相似文献

We searched for a new phenomenon, called coronal explosions, in three solar flares, and found them in all three. A coronal explosion is the propagation of a density wave through the flaring area. The wave emerges from one or two small areas (the sources) which are close to, but not identical with the sources of hard X-ray burst emission. In all three cases the explosion starts at the end of the impulsive phase, during or after the last hard ( 20 keV) X-ray burst. The velocities of propagation range between 1800 and a few tens of km s-1, and tend to decrease with time. We suggest that the bursts are magneto-hydrodynamical (shock) waves moving downward into denser regions.  相似文献

A review is given of observations and theories relevant to the solar flare of 21 May, 1980, 20 ∶ 50 UT, the best studied flare on record. For more than 30 hr before the flare there was filament activation and plasma heating to above 10 MK. A flare precursor was present ≥6 min before the flare onset. The flare started with filament activation (20 ∶ 50 UT), followed by thick-target heating of two footpoints and subsequent ablation and convective evaporation involving energies of 1 to 2 × 1031 erg. Coronal explosions occurred at 20 ∶ 57 UT (possibly associated with a type-II burst) and at 21 ∶ 04 UT (associated with an Hα spray?). Post-flare loops were first seen at 20 ∶ 57 UT, and their upward motion is interpreted as a manifestation of successive field-line reconnections. A type-IV radio burst which later changed into a type-I noise storm was related to a giant coronal arch located just below the radio noise storm region. Some implications and difficulties these observations present to current flare theories are mentioned.  相似文献

Hale region 16898 was observed by the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope at 6 cm and by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter and the X-Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Optical pictures of the same active region were taken at Sacramento Peak, Big Bear, and Meudon Observatories. The radio emission mechanisms are identified by comparing radio data with ultraviolet and soft X-ray data. The height of the radio sources and the magnetic field strength at that height are deduced. A radio source above a large sunspot shows a crescent shaped depression of circular polarization and a high brightness temperature. The emission mechanism is identified as gyroresonance at the second and the third harmonic layers and it is found that the second harmonic layer, where the magnetic field strength is 900 G, must be in the corona. An extended loop-like source connecting the leading and the following part of the active region as well as the sources associated with small spots are mainly due to thermal free-free emission by hot and dense plasma which is also observed in ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation. The calculated radio brightness temperature, using the physical parameters deduced from the ultraviolet and soft X-ray line intensities, agrees with the observed brightness temperature. The height of the low brightness temperature sources above the small spots is 6000 ± 3000 km and that above the large spot is less than 3000 km: the source above the large spot does not show any shift relative to the sunspot due to the projection effect. Very strong radio emission was found which was associated with the merging of a group of small spots into the large sunspot. In the same day, warm ( 106 K) and dense matter was present above the large spot. Evidence for nonthermal emission is presented.  相似文献

We explore and develop a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-based deflation method for the solution of ill-conditioned linear systems, appearing in simulations of two-phase flow through highly heterogeneous porous media. We accelerate the convergence of a Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) method achieving speed-ups of factors up to five. The up-front extra computational cost of the proposed method depends on the number of deflation vectors. The POD-based deflation method is tested for a particular problem and linear solver; nevertheless, it can be applied to various transient problems, and combined with multiple solvers, e.g., Krylov subspace and multigrid methods.

Data requirements for a 5-mm quasi-geoid in the Netherlands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We assess the surface gravity data requirements for a 5-mm quasi-geoid model for the Netherlands mainland and continental shelf in terms of omission and commission errors. The omission error critically depends on the roughness of the topography and bathymetry. For the Netherlands continental shelf, Central and Northern Netherlands, the omission error is well described by the model 0.32d mm, where d is the data spacing in km. For the more hilly Southern Netherlands, the omission error model is 0.92d mm. The commission error depends on the kernel modification, the data spacing, and the data accuracy. When using the spheroidal Stokes kernel, it is well described by 0.277 d σΔg mm, where σΔg is the noise standard deviation of surface gravity data in mGal. An upper bound of the commission error of the state-of-the-art satellite-only gravity model GOCO05S over the Netherlands is e0.03676L–11.419 mm, where L is the maximum degree up to which this model is used. Only if this model is truncated at a sufficiently low degree, e.g., at degree 100, its contribution to the total commission error can be neglected. We determine the total error as the sum of commission and omission errors. Hence, to realize a 5-mm quasi-geoid model for the Netherlands mainland and continental shelf, a data spacing of 3.5 km is needed when assuming a noise standard deviation of 1.5 mGal for surface gravity data. The currently available land-based gravity data fulfill this requirement. This does not apply to the situation at sea, where the density of the shipboard gravity data and the accuracy of the radar altimeter-derived data do not allow the realization of a 5-mm quasi-geoid model.  相似文献

The Lower Tagus Valley in Portugal contains a well-developed valley-fill succession covering the complete Late Pleistocene and Holocene periods. As large-scale stratigraphic and chronologic frameworks of the Lower Tagus Valley are not yet available, this paper describes facies, facies distribution, and sedimentary architecture of the late Quaternary valley fill. Twenty four radiocarbon ages provide a detailed chronological framework. Local factors affected the nature and architecture of the incised valley-fill succession. The valley is confined by pre-Holocene deposits and is connected with a narrow continental shelf. This configuration facilitated deep incision, which prevented large-scale marine flooding and erosion. Consequently a thick lowstand systems tract has been preserved. The unusually thick lowstand systems tract was probably formed in a previously (30,000–20,000 cal BP) incised narrow valley, when relative sea-level fall was maximal. The lowstand deposits were preserved due to subsequent rapid early Holocene relative sea-level rise and transgression, when tidal and marine environments migrated inland (transgressive systems tract). A constant sea level in the middle to late Holocene, and continuous fluvial sediment supply, caused rapid bayhead delta progradation (highstand systems tract). This study shows that the late Quaternary evolution of the Lower Tagus Valley is determined by a narrow continental shelf and deep glacial incision, rapid post-glacial relative sea-level rise, a wave-protected setting, and large fluvial sediment supply.  相似文献
