This paper is aimed at investigating the stability of point positions over time in support of applications that require high position stability when differential GPS is not feasible. One such application is the use of a P3-Orion aircraft offshore for magnetic measurement in support of submarine detection. Temporal changes in several GPS errors lead to variability in the computed positions, so it is not the absolute errors, but rather their temporal variations that are of importance. Furthermore, the temporal variability of the different error sources may dictate a certain algorithm approach and processing strategy. This paper analyzes the temporal variations of the broadcast satellite clock model and orbit parameters, as well as ionospheric errors, because these will typically be the dominant errors for real-time point positioning. These three errors are analyzed independently. A tropospheric correction is applied when computing all of the position results, so the tropospheric error itself is not investigated. Satellite clock and orbit errors are analyzed by comparing broadcast and precise post-mission SV clock corrections and orbits. For the ionosphere, the effect is separated using dual-frequency data. The analysis comprises primarily of assessing error behaviors and magnitudes through time and frequency analyses. In this way, the differences in variability of the errors are easily determined. The effect of each error in the position domain is also investigated in addition to the combined effect. Results show that, on a typical day when single frequency data are processed with broadcast orbit and clock data, the root mean square (RMS) of the changes in the position errors over a 50-s interval is about 5.8 cm in northing, 4.0 in easting, and 11.0 cm in height. When using precise orbits and clocks, in addition to dual frequency data, these values improve by 46–56% to 2.7 cm in northing, 2.2 cm in easting, and 4.9 cm in height. Under severe ionospheric activity, the RMS of the errors decrease from 8.1 to 3.3 cm in northing, 5.7 to 2.6 cm in easting, and 17.0 to 4.9 cm in height, which are improvements of 54–71%. Summary Aircraft single point position accuracy is assessed through a comparison of the single point coordinates with corresponding DGPS-derived coordinates. The platform utilized for this evaluation is a Naval Air Warfare Center P-3 Orion aircraft. Data was collected over a period of about 40 hours, spread over six days, off Florida's East Coast in July 94, using DGPS reference stations in Jacksonville, FL, and Warminster, PA. The analysis of results shows that the consistency between aircraft single point and DGPS coordinates obtained in single point positioning mode and DGPS mode is about 1 m (rms) in latitude and longitude, and 2 m (rms) in height, with instantaneous errors of up to a few metres due to the effect of the ionosphere on the single point L1 solutions.  相似文献

Measurements of the O2(A3Σ − X3Σ) Herzberg system in the night airglow have been made with the ESRO TD-1 satellite in the wavelength range 2400–3100 A. The slant emission rate varies from 3.5 to 15 kR, indicating an irregular structure of the atomic oxygen near the turbopause. A statistical maximum intensity is found near the tropic in the winter hemisphere. The intensity profile is consistent with excitation by three-body recombination of oxygen atoms. The observed total emission rate can be accounted for by reasonable atomic oxygen densities and an O2(A3Σ) production efficiency of about 20% if quenching by N2 occurs at the rate deduced from laboratory and other airglow measurements.  相似文献

Gullying has been widespread in the Ethiopian Highlands during the 20th century. It threatens the soil resource, lowers crop yields in intergully areas through enhanced drainage and desiccation, and aggravates flooding and reservoir siltation. Knowing the age and rates of gully development during the last few decades will help explain the reasons for current land degradation. In the absence of historical written or photographic documentation, the AGERTIM method (Assessment of Gully Erosion Rates Through Interviews and Measurements) has been developed. It comprises measurements of contemporary gully volumes, monitoring of gully evolution over several years and semi‐structured interview techniques. Gully erosion rates in the Dogu'a Tembien District, Tigray, Ethiopia, were estimated in three representative case‐study areas. In Dingilet, gullying started around 1965 after gradual environmental changes (removal of vegetation from cropland in the catchment and eucalyptus plantation in the valley bottom); rill‐like incisions grew into a gully, which increased rapidly in the drier period between 1977 and 1990. The estimated evolution of the total gully volume in the other areas show patterns similar to those of the Dingilet gully. Average gully erosion rate over the last 50 years is 6·2 t ha?1 a?1. Since 1995, no new gullies have developed in the study area. Area‐specific short‐term gully erosion rates are now on average 1·1 t ha?1 a?1. The successful application of the AGERTIM method requires an understanding of the geomorphology of the study area and an integration of the researchers with the rural society. It reveals that rapid gully development in the study area is some 50 years old and is mainly caused by human‐induced environmental degradation. Under the present‐day conditions of ‘normal’ rain and catchment‐wide soil and water conservation, gully erosion rates are decreasing. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The spatially distributed soil erosion and sediment delivery model WATEM/SEDEM was used to simulate the impact of riparian vegetated filter strips (RVFSs) on river sediment delivery at different spatial scales. For a field plot with a straight slope, sediment reduction by the RVFSs is comparable to results obtained through experimental set‐ups elsewhere (i.e. >70%). However, at the scale of an entire catchment, sediment reduction is much less (i.e. ±20%) due to (1) overland flow convergence, which reduces the sediment trapping efficiency of an RVFS, and (2) because part of the sediment bypasses the RVFSs through ditches, sewers and road surfaces. These results suggest that, at the catchment scale, RVFSs should be accompanied with other conservation techniques that are more appropriate for reducing river sediment loads, and that also reduce on‐site soil erosion. Influence of earthquakes on the stability of slopes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Earthquakes are a major trigger for instability of natural and man-made slopes. Often the instability of slopes due to an earthquake causes more destruction and kills more people than the actual earthquake itself. A comparison is made between different methodologies to analyze the potential stability of slopes during earthquakes. Theoretically, it seems simple to calculate the stability of a slope during an earthquake. In reality, however, the stability is influenced by so many parameters that are either not known or which influence is so poorly known that a decent estimation of stability cannot be made. Offshore the situation is worse because proper data required for stability calculations are even less available than onshore. On- and offshore, erosion and weathering create continuously slopes that may become unstable during a future earthquake, offshore also sedimentation creates continuously new slopes. Another fundamental problem in stability analysis is the complicated and largely unknown behavior of seismic waves in three-dimensions in natural materials. The lack of accurate data and the unknown behavior of seismic waves in three-dimensions make estimations of slope stability during an earthquake unreliable.  相似文献

We exclude hydrogen-burning stars, of any mass above the hydrogen-burning limit and any metallicity, as significant contributors to the massive haloes deduced from rotation curves to dominate the outer parts of spiral galaxies. We present and analyse images of four nearly edge-on bulgeless spiral galaxies (UGC 711, NGC 2915, UGC 12426, UGC 1459) obtained with ISOCAM (The CAMera instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory ) at 14.5 and 6.75 μm. Our sensitivity limit for detection of any diffuse infrared emission associated with the dark haloes in these galaxies is a few tens of μJy per 6 × 6 arcsec2 pixel, with this limit currently set by remaining difficulties in modelling the non-linear behaviour of the detectors. All four galaxies show zero detected signal from extended non-disc emission, consistent with zero halo-like luminosity density distribution. The 95 per cent upper limit on any emission, for NGC 2915 in particular, allows us to exclude very low mass main-sequence stars ( M  > 0.08 M⊙) and young brown dwarfs (≲1 Gyr) as significant contributors to dark matter in galactic haloes. Combining our results with those of the Galactic microlensing surveys, which exclude objects with M  < 0.01 M⊙, excludes almost the entire possible mass range of compact baryonic objects from contributing to Galactic dark matter.  相似文献

We re-examine the Fall & Efstathiou scenario for galaxy formation, including the dark halo gravitational reaction to the formation of the baryon disc, as well as continuous variations in the intrinsic halo density profile. The recently published rotation curves of low surface brightness (LSB) and dwarf galaxies together with previously known scaling relations provide sufficient information on the present-day structure of late-type disc galaxies to invert the problem. By requiring that the models reproduce all the observational restrictions we can fully constrain the initial conditions of galaxy formation, with a minimum of assumptions, in particular without the need to specify a cold dark matter (CDM) halo profile. This allows one to solve for all the initial conditions, in terms of the halo density profile, the baryon fraction and the total angular momentum. We find that a unique initial halo shape is sufficient to accurately reproduce the rotation curves of both LSB and normal late-type spiral galaxies. This unique halo profile differs substantially from that found in standard CDM models. A galactic baryon fraction of 0.065 is found. The initial value of the dimensionless angular momentum is seen to be the principal discriminator between the galaxy classes we examine. The present-day scalings between structural parameters are seen to originate in the initial conditions.  相似文献
