We present a binned annual product (BINS) of sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), and sea surface density (SSD) observations for 1896–2015 of the subpolar North Atlantic between 40° N and 70° N, mostly excluding the shelf areas. The product of bin averages over spatial scales on the order of 200 to 500 km, reproducing most of the interannual variability in different time series covering at least the last three decades or of the along-track ship monitoring. Comparisons with other SSS and SST gridded products available since 1950 suggest that BINS captures the large decadal to multidecadal variability. Comparison with the HadSST3 SST product since 1896 also indicates that the decadal and multidecadal variability is usually well-reproduced, with small differences in long-term trends or in areas with marginal data coverage in either of the two products. Outside of the Labrador Sea and Greenland margins, interannual variability is rather similar in different seasons. Variability at periods longer than 15 years is a large part of the total interannual variability, both for SST and SSS, except possibly in the south-western part of the domain. Variability in SST and SSS increases towards the west, with the contribution of salinity variability to density dominating that of temperature in the western Atlantic, except close to the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Current in the southwest area. Weaker variability and larger relative temperature contributions to density changes are found in the eastern part of the gyre and south of Iceland.
Decades of cruise-based exploration have provided excellent snapshots of the structure of mid-ocean ridges and have revealed
that accretion is a mixture of steady-state and quantum events. Observatory-type studies are now needed to quantify the temporal
evolution of these systems. A multi-disciplinary seafloor observatory site is currently being set up at the Lucky Strike volcano,
in the axial valley of the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge as a part of the MoMAR (monitoring of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge)
initiative. The aim of this observatory is to better understand the dynamics of the volcano and the hydrothermal vents hosted
at its summit as well as their plumbing systems. In August 2006, the GRAVILUCK cruise initiated an experiment to monitor the
deformation of Lucky Strike volcano. A geodetic network was installed, and seafloor pressure, gravity and magnetic data were
collected. In this paper, we present the method used to monitor volcanic deformation, which involves measuring relative depth
difference between points within a seafloor geodesy network. We show that, taking into account oceanographic variability and
measurement noise, the network should be able to detect vertical deformations of the order of 1 cm. 相似文献
The spatial variability of seagrass meadows in Arcachon Bay, was studied between 1988 and 2008 using a combination of mapping techniques based on aerial photographs for intertidal dwarf-grass (Zostera noltii) beds and acoustic sonar for permanently submerged eelgrass (Zostera marina) populations. The results show a severe decline over the period for both species, as well as an acceleration of the decline since 2005 for Z. noltii. The total surface regression over the studied period is estimated to be 22.8 km2 for Z. noltii and 2.7 km2 for Z. marina, which represent declines of 33 and 74% respectively. 相似文献
Organic matter was studied in the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) of the Seine Estuary during 8 tidal cycles from April to October in 2001, 2002 and 2003, covering a salinity range from 0 to 27. The hydrological conditions were quite varied (extremely wet in 2001, unusually dry in 2003). A particularly striking feature is the high organic matter content in the suspended solids (SS) of the Seine estuary (4–5%). 相似文献
ABSTRACT Studying and planning urban evolution is essential for understanding the past and designing the cities of the future and can be facilitated by providing means for sharing, visualizing, and navigating in cities, on the web, in space and in time. Standard formats, methods, and tools exist for visualizing large-scale 3D cities on the web. In this paper, we go further by integrating the temporal dimension of cities in geospatial web delivery standard formats. In doing so, we enable interactive visualization of large-scale time-evolving 3D city models on the web. A key characteristic of this paper lies in the proposed four-step generic approach. First, we design a generic conceptual model of standard formats for delivering 3D cities on the web. Then, we formalize and integrate the temporal dimension of cities into this generic conceptual model. Following which, we specify the conceptual model in the 3D Tiles standard at logical and technical specification levels, resulting in an extension of 3D Tiles for delivering time-evolving 3D city models on the web. Finally, we propose an open-source implementation, experiments, and an evaluation of the propositions and visualization rules. We also provide access to reproducibility notes allowing researchers to replicate all the experiments. 相似文献
The French National Agency for Nuclear Waste Management is currently studying the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone as a potential repository for nuclear waste. This study focuses on the hydromechanical (HM) unsaturated response of the rock subjected to hydraulic loading. Static atmosphere drying tests highlighted the HM coupling and mechanical anisotropy of the samples. A coupled poroelastic model was proposed, involving highly nonlinear equations. Numerical simulations were performed using the finite element code Code_Aster. Through a sensitivity analysis, the most suitable parameters for estimation were found to be the Biot coefficient and 3 of the 4 independent parameters of the Van Genuchten?CMualem relations. The parameters were estimated according to an inverse procedure that minimizes a cost functional. The estimates could not outline any hysteretic behavior, but they appeared to be divided into two groups (depending on their fitted values). The convergence and stability of the inverse algorithm were studied, and the results showed that direct computations must be run prior to the inversion to ensure its convergence. No plasticity occurred in the samples (according to the model), whereas irreversible phenomena do take place in situ. 相似文献
The likelihood of Gaussian realizations, as generated by the Cholesky simulation method, is analyzed in terms of Mahalanobis distances and fluctuations in the variogram reproduction. For random sampling, the probability to observe a Gaussian realization vector can be expressed as a function of its Mahalanobis distance, and the maximum likelihood depends only on the vector size. The Mahalanobis distances are themselves distributed as a Chi-square distribution and they can be used to describe the likelihood of Gaussian realizations. Their expected value and variance are only determined by the size of the vector of independent random normal scores used to generate the realizations. When the vector size is small, the distribution of Mahalanobis distances is highly skewed and most realizations are close to the vector mean in agreement with the multi-Gaussian density model. As the vector size increases, the realizations sample a region increasingly far out on the tail of the multi-Gaussian distribution, due to the large increase in the size of the uncertainty space largely compensating for the low probability density. For a large vector size, realizations close to the vector mean are not observed anymore. Instead, Gaussian vectors with Mahalanobis distance in the neighborhood of the expected Mahalanobis distance have the maximum probability to be observed. The distribution of Mahalanobis distances becomes Gaussian shaped and the bulk of realizations appear more equiprobable. However, the ratio of their probabilities indicates that they still remain far from being equiprobable. On the other hand, it is observed that equiprobable realizations still display important fluctuations in their variogram reproduction. The variance level that is expected in the variogram reproduction, as well as the variance of the variogram fluctuations, is dependent on the Mahalanobis distance. Realizations with smaller Mahalanobis distances are, on average, smoother than realizations with larger Mahalanobis distances. Poor ergodic conditions tend to generate higher proportions of flatter variograms relative to the variogram model. Only equiprobable realizations with a Mahalanobis distance equal to the expected Mahalanobis distance have an expected variogram matching the variogram model. For large vector sizes, Cholesky simulated Gaussian vectors cannot be used to explore uncertainty in the neighborhood of the vector mean. Instead uncertainty is explored around the n-dimensional elliptical envelop corresponding to the expected Mahalanobis distance. 相似文献
It is still disputed whether very old archaeological and palaeontological remains found in the Belle‐Roche palaeocave (eastern Belgium) pertain to the Early (~1 Ma) or Middle (~0.5 Ma) Pleistocene. Here, in situ‐produced cosmogenic 10Be concentrations from a depth profile in nearby sediments of the Belle‐Roche terrace (Amblève Main Terrace level) are used as an indirect solution of this chronological issue. The distribution of 10Be concentrations in the upper 3 m of this profile displays the theoretically expected exponential decrease with depth. Assuming a single exposure episode, we obtain a best fit age of 222.5±31 ka for the time of terrace abandonment. However, below 3 m, the 10Be concentrations show a marked progressive increase with depth. This distinctive cosmogenic signal is interpreted as the result of slow aggradation of the fluvial deposits over a lengthy interval. Modelling of the whole profile thus suggests that the onset of the terrace formation occurred at around 550 ka, with a sediment accumulation rate of ~20 mm ka?1. Based on two slightly different reconstructions of the geomorphic evolution of the area and a discussion of the temporal link between the cave and Main Terrace levels, we conclude that the fossil‐bearing layers in the palaeokarst pertain most probably to MIS 14–13, or possibly MIS 12–11. This age estimate for the large mammal association identified in the Belle‐Roche palaeokarst and the attribution to MIS 14–13 of a similar fauna found in the lowermost fossiliferous layers of the Caune de l'Arago (Tautavel) are in mutual support. Our results therefore confirm the status of the Belle‐Roche site as a reference site for the Cromerian mammal association in NW Europe. 相似文献
