Peatlands are globally important ecosystems in terms of biodiversity, hydrology, and for the role they play in the carbon cycle. They store approximately one‐third of the carbon contained in the terrestrial biosphere, whilst covering only approximately 3% of the land and freshwater surface. Tropical peatlands represent an important component of this carbon store and can be found in Asia, Africa, South and Central America. However, tropical peatlands are also under severe threat of destruction from human activities including deforestation, agricultural expansion and resource exploitation. In South America, the Pastaza–Marañon foreland basin (PMFB) in NW Peru represents the most carbon dense landscape in Amazonia due to an abundance of peatlands, including nutrient‐poor ombrotrophic peat domes and river‐influenced minerotrophic swamps. The Aucayacu peatland in the PMFB is a nutrient‐poor peat dome and represents the oldest peatland yet reported in Amazonia. It is a relatively large peatland—it is estimated that Aucayacu has maximum dimensions of 33 km (NW‐SE) by 15 km (NE‐SW) (Fig. 1 ). The flora of the site is characterized by stunted vegetation due to low nutrient status, known as ‘pole’ and ‘dwarf’ forest, which at Aucayacu grows above a patchy understory of grasses and ferns (Fig. 2 ). Recent research has shown that Aucayacu has laid down peat up to 7.5 m deep in ~ 8900 years.  相似文献

The Gredos massif is one the better exposed granitoid complexes of the Iberian massif. It is composed mainly of peraluminous granitoids with subordinate basic and ultrabasic complexes. The massif also contains mega-enclaves of migmatites with which the granitoids show transitional contacts. Two major magmatic associations have been distinguished in this study: (1) One comprises the granitoids with microgranular enclaves, the enclaves, and basic rocks; (2) the other is formed by leucogranites, intrusive into the former series and free of microgranular enclaves. Field relationships and microstructures indicate that the rocks of the first series are related by a dominant hybridization process. The Sr-Nd isotopic study reveals that this process is complex, relating different end-members of mantle and crustal affinities, and occurred around 295 Ma ago, late with respect to the main deformation phases of the Hercynian orogeny. The granitoids with microgranular enclaves (GME) are part of an overall mixing trend involving Palaeozoic mantle-derived magma and melts of older crustal material. Amphibole-bearing GME, in general, contain greater proportions of the mantle-derived component than the cordierite-bearing GME. The actual mixing processes took place on a variety of scales, sometimes between melts which were themselves hybrids. On a local scale this hybridization process can be modelled by simple binary mixing as documented in the case of a composite dyke. The isotopic signatures of the basic rocks are probably, to a large degree, the result of interaction with crustal melts, though additionally the presence of an enriched mantle source cannot be elmininated. Microgranular enclaves and their immediate hosts have differing initial Sr and Nd isotopic signatures, indicating that isotopic equilibrium was not attained. This suggests that the enclaves did not reside in their final granitic melt for long before cooling of the whole system. The enclaves are considered to have been derived from basaltic melts which had fractionated and hybridised to varying degrees. Late-stage peraluminous leucogranites have similar initial Nd isotopic compositions to the evolved GME; a crustal source with a radically different Nd isotopic composition or age does not need to be invoked in their petrogenesis.  相似文献

A method has been developed to identify the parameters of the lower modes of a linear, time-invariant model of a structure from its recorded earthquake response. The identification is performed by selecting the parameters to obtain a least squares fit over a specified frequency band between the unsmoothed, complex-valued finite Fourier transform of the recorded acceleration response and the corresponding transform calculated from the response of the model. By including the effects of the initial and final conditions in the analysis, only a portion of the recorded excitation and response acceleration histories need be considered. The method is demonstrated first by an application to generated test data, and then to measured earthquake response.  相似文献

Pore water testing and analysis: the good, the bad,and the ugly   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The increasingly common practice of collecting and assessing sediment pore water as a primary measure of sediment quality is reviewed. Good features of this practice include: pore water is a key exposure route for some organisms associated with sediments; pore water testing eliminates particle size effects; pore water analyses and tests can provide useful information regarding contamination and pollution. Bad features include: pore water is not the only exposure route; pore water tests lack chemical or biological realism: their "sensitivity" relative to other tests may be meaningless due to manipulation and laboratory artifacts; many sediment and surface dwelling organisms are not directly influenced by pore water. Bad features can become ugly if: other exposure pathways are not considered (for toxicity or bioaccumulation); manipulation techniques are not appropriate; pore water tests are inappropriately linked to population-level effects. Pore water testing and analyses can be effective tools provided their limitations are well understood by researchers and managers.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of the streamwise mass flux of blown sand in the near-bed (< 17 mm) region are analysed from high-resolution measurements made using an optical sensor in a wind tunnel. This analysis is complemented by detailed measurements of mass flux and mean velocity profiles throughout the boundary layer depth (0·17 m) using passive, chambered sand traps of small dimensions and armoured thermal anemometers, respectively. The data permit a preliminary analysis of the relations between the observed forms of the profiles of near-bed fluid stress and horizontal mass flux within a carefully conditioned boundary layer. Profiles of mass flux density are found to be characterized by three regions of differing gradient with transitions at about 2 mm and 19 mm above the bed. The exponential decay of mass flux with height is confirmed for elevations above 19 mm, and when plotted as a function of u*2/g (a parameter of mean vertical trajectory height in saltation), the gradient of mass flux in this region scales with the wake-corrected friction velocity (u), where u > 0·30 m s−1. A separate near-bed region of more intense transport below 19 mm is identified which carries 80 per cent of the total mass flux. This region is evident in some previous field and wind tunnel data but not in profiles simulated by numerical models. Ventilated passive sand traps underestimate mass flux in this region by 37 per cent. At slow or moderate wind speeds a third significant region below 2 mm is observed. These regions are likely to be related to grain populations in successive saltation, low-energy ejections and intermittent bed contact, respectively. Optical measurements reveal locally high grain concentrations at some elevations below 5 mm; these heights scale with transport rate, mass flux gradient and wind speed.
