Coarse debris flows develop surges with distinct longitudinal sorting. Although highly unsteady, such flow often appears to attain a steady‐state condition, moving over long distances with approximately constant velocity and maximum depth. Typically, a steep, bouldery front is followed by an accumulation of liquid slurry, which in turn decays into a dilute tail. Such sorting has long been recognized by field workers, but its influence on the dynamic behaviour of debris flow surges has not yet been fully clarified by analysis. A simple model is presented, using the theory of uniformly progressive flow and incorporating zoned longitudinal variation in rheology. It is shown that non‐homogeneity can cause very significant magnification of the peak discharge, depending on the slope angle and on the length of the frontal boulder concentration. The shape of the surge flow profiles is determined not only by the rheology of the retained material, but by the longitudinal variation of material characteristics. As a result, excessive reliance on laboratory‐derived rheological constitutive relationships is not advisable. The goal of this article is to revise several aspects of the well-known classification of landslides, developed by Varnes (1978). The primary recommendation is to modify the definition of landslide-forming materials, to provide compatibility with accepted geotechnical and geological terminology of rocks and soils. Other, less important modifications of the classification system are suggested, resulting from recent developments of the landslide science. The modified Varnes classification of landslides has 32 landslide types, each of which is backed by a formal definition. The definitions should facilitate backward compatibility of the system as well as possible translation to other languages. Complex landslides are not included as a separate category type, but composite types can be constructed by the user of the classification by combining two or more type names, if advantageous.  相似文献

The Zymoetz River landslide is a recent example of an extremely mobile type of landslide known as a rock slide–debris flow. It began as a failure of 900,000 m3 of bedrock, which mobilized an additional 500,000 m3 of surficial material in its path, transforming into a large debris flow that traveled over 4 km from its source. Seasonal snow and meltwater in the proximal part of the path were important factors. A recently developed dynamic model that accounts for material entrainment, DAN3D, was used to back-analyze this event. The two distinct phases of motion were modeled using different basal rheologies: a frictional model in the proximal path and a Voellmy model in the distal path, following the initiation of significant entrainment. Very good agreement between the observed and simulated results was achieved, suggesting that entrainment capabilities are essential for the successful simulation of this type of landslide.  相似文献

An excess of fine sediment (grain size <2 mm) supply to rivers leads to reservoir siltation, water contamination and operational problems for hydroelectric power plants in many catchments of the world, such as in the French Alps. These problems are exacerbated in mountainous environments characterized by large sediment exports during very short periods. This study combined river flow records, sediment geochemistry and associated radionuclide concentrations as input properties to a Monte Carlo mixing model to quantify the contribution of different geologic sources to river sediment. Overall, between 2007 and 2009, erosion rates reached 249 ± 75 t km?2 yr?1 at the outlet of the Bléone catchment, but this mean value masked important spatial variations of erosion intensity within the catchment (85–5000 t km?2 yr?1). Quantifying the contribution of different potential sources to river sediment required the application of sediment fingerprinting using a Monte Carlo mixing model. This model allowed the specific contributions of different geological sub‐types (i.e. black marls, marly limestones, conglomerates and Quaternary deposits) to be determined. Even though they generate locally very high erosion rates, black marls supplied only a minor fraction (5–20%) of the fine sediment collected on the riverbed in the vicinity of the 907 km2 catchment outlet. The bulk of sediment was provided by Quaternary deposits (21–66%), conglomerates (3–44%) and limestones (9–27%). Even though bioengineering works conducted currently to stabilize gullies in black marl terrains are undoubtedly useful to limit sediment supply to the Bléone river, erosion generated by other substrate sources dominated between 2007 and 2009 in this catchment. Debris avalanches produced from the collapse of volcanic edifices are destructive events that involve volumes up to two orders of magnitude larger (cubic kilometer) than most non-volcanic rock and debris avalanches. We replicate the motion and spreading of several volcanic collapses by means of a depth-averaged quasi-3D numerical code. The model assumes a frictional internal rheology and a variable basal rheology (i.e frictional, Voellmy and plastic). We back analyzed seven case-studies against observations reported in the literature to provide a set of calibrated cases. The ASTER and SRTM satellite-derived digital elevation models were used as topographic data. The numerical model captures the main features of the propagation process, including travel distance, lateral spreading and run up. At varying triggering factors and material characteristics the best fitting parameters span in a narrow interval and differ from those typical of non-volcanic rock and debris avalanches. The bulk basal friction angles (the sole parameter required in the frictional rheology) range within 3° and 7.5° whereas typical values for non-volcanic debris avalanches vary from 11° to 31°. The consistency of the back analyzed parameters is encouraging for a possible use of the model in the perspective of hazard mapping. The reconstruction of the pre-event topography is critical, and it is associated to large uncertainty. The quality of the terrain data, more than the resolution of the DEMs used, is relevant for the modeling. Resampling the original square grid to larger cell sizes determines a low increase in the back analyzed rheological parameters, as a result of the lower roughness of the terrain.  相似文献

The article in hand presents a comparative analysis of unweighted thermic and hygric index series of different European regions (northern Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, northern Italy, ancient Hungary, Poland and Spain). Besides methodological aspects about the formation of indices, especially the progress as well as the question of similarity development of these series in the 16th century are discussed and shown on the balance sheet. It becomes evident that with respect to the temperature on the level of unweighted indices the European regions of Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland are very similar during all seasons. In winter and summer these correlations are especially evident, during the transitional seasons they are smaller. Larger differences exist between the central European core region and the adjacent areas of research. In principle, the hygric differences are larger than the thermic ones.In the course of the sixteenth century marked cooling phases occurred during all seasons with increasing accentuation. These phases were typical for the climate of the Little Ice Age. In addition to this long-term analysis, some outstanding years of extreme weather like those of 1540, 1573 and 1587 are presented, in the course of which questions of climatic impact are included. Finally, recent instrumental data was used to conduct an analysis that compared the similarities between the respective regions and the similarities between the empirical data and indices. On the one hand, this confirmed the spatial pattern, on the other hand the usability of the indices.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the effects of urbanization growth on river morphology in the downstream part of Talar River, east of Mazandaran Province, Iran. Morphological and morphometric parameters in 10 equal sub-reaches were defined along a 11.5 km reach of the Talar River after land cover maps were produced for 1955, 1968, 1994, 2005 and 2013. Land cover types changed extremely during the study period. Residential lands were found to have increased in area by about 1631%, while forest land and riparian vegetation decreased in by approximately 99.9 and 96.2%, respectively. The results of morphometric and morphological factors showed that average channel width (W) for all 11.5 km of the study river decreased by 84% during the study period, while the flow length increased by about 2.14%.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed field investigation and hazard assessment for an unstable rock slope above an industrial site in the Riviera valley in the Canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland. An integrated framework was used to counter issues of geological complexity and uncertainty, linking geological mapping and numerical modeling to develop an understanding of the acting instability mechanism to 2-D and 3-D dynamic runout simulations to predict the travel path and reach in the event of a large volume rockslide. The results from the numerical stability analysis provided a means to constrain failure volume estimates, whereas a series of calibration simulations were used to constrain the input parameters required by the rheological model used for the runout analysis. Results from this assessment suggest that current protection measures in place may not be sufficient, helping local authorities to define hazard zones and aid further development plans for the region.  相似文献
