A low-cost, expendable, helicopter-deployed, wave-riding buoy is described that has been developed to measure meteorological properties at sea. The buoy weighs 8.2 kg and is 1.3-m long and 8.9 cm in diameter in its stored configuration. After deployment, the buoy extends a 2.5-m sensor mast above the water and a 3.8-m ballasted keel below the water. Buoyancy is provided by an inflated air bladder. An airsonde electronics package that measures relative humidity, barometric pressure, and air temperature transmits the data via a UHF transmitter to a receiver on a helicopter. Two new ordinary chondrites were found about 40 km west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Correo is an H4 chondrite with distinct chondrules and major olivine (Fo81.4), orthopyroxene (En82.3) and plagioclase (An12). Suwanee Spring is an L5 chondrite with few distinct chondrules and a highly recrystallized matrix. Major minerals are olivine (Fo75.4), orthopyroxene (En77.7) and plagioclase (An9). The metallic Ni-Fe phases of both meteorites are typical of slowly-cooled ordinary chondrites. 相似文献

A review of the literature indicates that the elastic behaviour of granular materials is isotropic and that Poissony's ratio is constant, whereas Young's Modulus, the bulk modulus and the shear modulus vary with the mean normal stress and the deviatoric stress. A nonlinear, isotropic model for the elastic behaviour is developed on the basis of theoretical considerations involving the principle of conservation of energy. Energy is therefore neither generated not dissipated in closed-loop stress paths or in closed-loop strain paths. The framework for the model consists of Hooke's law, in which Poission's ratio is constant and Young's modulus is expressed as a power function invlving the first invariat of the stress tensor and the second invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor. The characteristics of the model are described, and the accuracy is evaluated by comparison with experimental results from triaxial tests and three-dimensional cubical triaxial tests with a variety of stress paths. Parameter determination from unloading–reloading cycles in conventional triaxial compression tests is demonstrated, typical parameter values are given for granular materials and extension of the model to soils with effective cohesion is described. 相似文献

Gold Bar is one of several Carlin-type gold mining districts located in the Battle Mountain–Eureka trend, Nevada. It is composed of one main deposit, Gold Bar; five satellite deposits; and four resources that contain 1.6 Moz (50 t) of gold. All of the deposits and resources occur at the intersection of north-northwest- and northeast-trending high-angle faults in slope facies limestones of the Devonian Nevada Group exposed in windows through Ordovician basin facies siliciclastic rocks of the Roberts Mountains allochthon. Igneous intrusions and magnetic anomalies are notably absent. The Gold Bar district contains a variety of discordant and stratabound jasperoid bodies, especially along the Wall Fault zone, that were mapped and studied in some detail to identify the attributes of those most closely associated with gold ore and to constrain genetic models. Four types of jasperoids, J0, J1, J2, and J3, were distinguished on the basis of their geologic and structural settings and appearance. Field relations suggest that J0 formed during an early event. Petrographic observations, geochemistry, and δ18O values of quartz suggest it was overprinted by the hydrothermal event that produced ore-related J1, J2, and J3 jasperoids and associated gold deposits. The greater amount of siliciclastic detritus present in J0 jasperoids caused them to have higher δ18O values than J1,2,3 jasperoids hosted in underlying limestones. Ore-related jasperoids are composed of main-ore-stage replacements and late-ore-stage open-space filling quartz with variable geochemistry and an enormous range of δ18O values (24.5 and −3.7‰). Jasperoids hosted in limestones with the most anomalous Au, Ag, Hg, ±(As, Sb, Tl) concentrations and the highest δ18O values are associated with the largest deposits. The 28‰ range of jasperoid δ18O values is best explained by mixing between an 18O-enriched fluid and an 18O-depleted fluid. The positive correlation between the sizes of gold deposits and the δ18O composition of jasperoids indicates that gold was introduced by the 18O-enriched fluid. The lowest calculated δ18O value for water in equilibrium with late-ore-stage quartz at 200°C (−15‰) and the measured δD value of fluid inclusion water extracted from late-ore-stage orpiment and realgar (−116‰) indicate that the 18O-depleted fluid was composed of relatively unexchanged meteoric water. The source of the 18O-enriched ore fluid is not constrained. The δ34S values of late-ore-stage realgar, orpiment, and stibnite (5.7–15.5‰) and barite (31.5–40.9‰) suggest that H2S and sulfate were derived from sedimentary sources. Likewise, the δ13C and δ18O values of late-stage calcite (−4.8 to 1.5‰ and 11.5 to 17.4‰, respectively) suggest that CO2 was derived from marine limestones. Based on these data and the apparent absence of any Eocene intrusions in the district, Gold Bar may be the product of a nonmagmatic hydrothermal system. 相似文献

The Lost City Hydrothermal Field at 30°N, near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, is an off-axis, moderate temperature, high-pH (9-10.8), serpentinite-hosted vent system. The field is hosted on ∼1.5 Ma crust, near the summit of the Atlantis Massif. Within the field, actively venting carbonate chimneys tower up to 60 m above the seafloor, making them the tallest vent structures known. The chemistry of the chimneys and vent fluids is controlled by serpentinization reactions between seawater and underlying peridotite. Mixing of <40-91 °C calcium-rich vent fluids with seawater results in the precipitation of variable mixtures of aragonite, calcite, and brucite. The resultant deposits range from tall, graceful pinnacles to fragile flanges and delicate precipitates that grow outward from fissures in the bedrock. In this study, mineralogy, petrographic analyses, major and trace element concentrations, and Sr isotopic compositions are used to propose a model for the growth and chemical evolution of carbonate chimneys in a serpentinite-hosted environment. Our results show that nascent chimneys are characterized by a porous, interlacing network of aragonite, and brucite minerals that form extremely fragile structures. The chemistry of these young deposits is characterized by ∼10 wt% Ca and up to 27 wt% Mg, extremely low trace metal concentrations, and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios near 0.70760. During aging of the chimneys, progressive reactions with seawater result in the dissolution of brucite, the conversion of aragonite to calcite, and infilling of pore spaces with calcite. The oldest chimneys are dominated by calcite, with bulk rock values of up to 36 wt% Ca and <1 wt% Mg. These older structures contain higher concentrations of trace metals (e.g., Mn and Ti), and have Sr isotope ratios near seawater values (0.70908). Exposed ultramafic rocks are prevalent along the Mid-Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian Ocean ridge networks and it is likely that other Lost City-type systems exist. 相似文献

A chain of volcanoes, some of them still active, extends from the Atlantic Ocean into the highlands of Cameroon. Mount Cameroon, located at the edge of the continent, erupted in 1999 and 2000 and spewed lava part-way down its flanks, cutting off a coastal road. A number of the now extinct (or dormant) volcanic craters on the continental part of the line are filled with water, forming crater lakes. These lakes have achieved mythical status in local tribal lore. Lacking a written history, prior to the arrival of the colonial powers, much of our understanding of past natural phenomena relating to the lakes is based on these myths. 相似文献

Silicic acid (H4SiO4) flux from the sediment, H4SiO4 concentration and river flow were used to obtain an annual dissolved silicon budget for Chesapeake Bay. H4SiO4 concentrations vary seasonally in the estuary: for a 12-year period, mean H4SiO4 concentrations in the mesohaline region were high both in spring and in late summer to early fall, and were low in late spring—occasionally approaching levels potentially limiting to diatom growth. Most of the annual allochthonous H4SiO4 supply to the estuary derives from the three major rivers, but regenerative H4SiO4 flux from the sediment to the water column exceeds the total riverine input by a factor of at least five. Sediment H4SiO4 efflux exhibits seasonality and averages approximately 2–3 mol Si m?2 yr?1. The high rates of sediment dissolution and efflux appear to maintain high levels of H4SiO4 in the mesohaline region, and Si-limitation of diatom growth there seems unlikely. The relative rates of biogenic silica formation and dissolution do not vary synchronously: seasonal variations in diatom productivity, sedimentary release of H4SiO4 and river flow all contribute to the observed late winter and late summer seasonal maxima and late spring minimum in water column H4SiO4 concentrations. If the only source of Si to support sedimentary H4SiO4 efflux is biogenic particulate silica recently deposited from the water column and this silica in turn was produced by diatoms in a ratio of 8C:1 Si, the minimum annual primary production by diatoms is at least 260 g C m?2, approximately half of annual total plankton primary production. This estimate would be revised upwards according to the amount of particulate biogenic silica dissolving in the water column. Burial of biogenic silica amounts to from 2 to 84% of the sediment efflux of H4SiO4, depending on location in the bay. On an annual basis, burial represents from 60 to 100% of fluvial H4SiO4-Si inputs. 相似文献

The vertical distributions of10Be and9Be at three locations in the Pacific (25°N, 170°E; 17°N, 118°W; 3°S, 117°W) are presented. The results show that both isotopes exhibit nutrient-like profiles. From the surface to the bottom, the increase for10Be is two- to threefold and that for9Be is about fivefold. While the inter-station variations in surface water concentrations may reach a factor of two, deep-water values tend to be much more uniform averaging about 2000 atoms/g for10Be and 30 pM for9Be. A similar situation applies to the10Be/9Be ratio; it varies approximately from 1 to 3 × 10−7 (atom/atom) at shallow depths but tends toward a value close to 1.1 × 10−7 in the deep ocean. The variation of10Be/9Be can be viewed as resulting from the fact that10Be in a given parcel of water consists of two components: recycled and primary. The recycled component is that part of10Be which has reached tracer equilibrium with9Be, as opposed to the primary component which, upon entering the sea from the atmosphere, has yet to equilibrate with9Be through particle cycling and mixing processes. It is estimated that 70% to nearly 100% of10Be at the three stations are being recycled, and the recycled beryllium bears an atomic ratio of10Be/9Be close to 1 × 10−7. The influx of10Be into a globigerinid ooze core (CH72-02) from the eastern North Atlantic has been studied. This core contains a depositional record of the first 11 δ18O stages covering the last 423 ka. It is shown that the marine deposition of10Be is strongly influenced by the sedimentation of clays. Clay particles appear 10 times more efficient than the carbonate component as a carrier in bringing10Be to the bottom sediments. In core CH72-02, the deposition rates of10Be averaged over each oxygen-isotope stage for the past 11 stages show a scatter of ±40% about the mean value of 6.6 × 108 atoms cm−2 ka−1. However, after correction for changes in lithology, the data show that the production rate of10Be over the same period has varied no more than ±25%, and the variations are not systematic in that high or low10Be production appear to be associated with either cold or warm climates. On the time scale of this investigation (intervals of ca. 50 ka over the last 420 ka, with resolutions as fine as 10 ka for portions of the record), it is unlikely that the shielding effect of the solar wind has deviated by more than ±25% or the geomagnetic field intensity has deviated by more than a factor of 1.6 from their long-term averages. 相似文献
