The past history of recurrent flank collapses of la Soufrière volcano of Guadeloupe, its structure, its well-developed hydrothermal
system and the current activity constitute factors that could promote a future flank collapse, particularly in the case of
a significant increase of activity, with or without shallow magmatic input. To address the hazards associated with such a
collapse, we model the emplacement of the debris avalanche generated by a flank-collapse event in 1,250 BC (3,100 years B.P.).
We use a finite-difference grain-flow model solving mass and momentum conservation equations that are depth-averaged over
the slide thickness, and a Coulomb-type friction law with a variable basal (minimum) friction angle. Using the parameter values
determined from this simulation, we then simulate the debris avalanche which could be generated by a potential collapse of
the present lava dome. We then discuss the region which could be affected by such a future collapse, and additional associated

The BATHYMAY marine survey was carried out in January 2004 around the French volcanic island of Mayotte, onboard the research vessel Marion Dufresne 2. Multibeam bathymetry revealed for the first time the morphology of the whole outer slope. Preliminary interpretations show broad canyons that deeply incise the slope, numerous volcanoes and huge landslides. Large submarine plateaus are also highlighted, bounded by steep cliffs and active normal faults. A model for Mayotte is suggested, in which eruptive activity, sometimes influenced by normal faulting, was concentrated along a N140° regional line (the Comoros archipelago axis), with landslide activity concentrated on the northeastern and southwestern flanks of this line. The protection of environmental flows, as a management objective for a regulating agency, needs to be consistent with the aquifer water balance and the degree of resource renewability. A stylized hydro-economic model is used where natural recharge, which sustains environmental flows, is considered both in the aquifer water budget and in the welfare function as ecosystem damage. Groundwater recharge and the associated natural drainage may be neglected for aquifers containing fossil water, where the groundwater is mined. However, when dealing with an aquifer that constitutes a renewable resource, for which recharge is not negligible, natural drainage should explicitly appear in the water budget. In doing so, the optimum path of net extraction rate does not necessarily converge to the recharge rate, but depends on the costs associated with ecosystem damages. The optimal paths and equilibrium values for the water volume and water extraction are analytically derived, and numerical simulations based on the Western La Mancha aquifer (southwest Spain) illustrate the theoretical results of the study. 相似文献

New Hf isotopic compositions for island arc basalts from the Luzon arc (Philippines) define a remarkable sub-horizontal trend in Hf–Nd isotopic space with a small range of Hf (+5 to +17) associated with a large variation in Nd (–7 to +8). The data plot above and barely overlap the terrestrial array defined by oceanic basalts and continental crust. Mixing hyperbolas passing through the data intersect fields for depleted mantle and pelagic sediments suggesting that these two components formed the source of the Luzon arc lavas. An exception is the Batan Island where the low Nd ratios are associated with low Hf values. A mixing hyperbola fitting the Batan samples suggests that their mantle source was modified by subducted material prior to contamination by terrigenous clays. More generally, the geochemical relationships in Luzon lavas show that the mixing endmembers are source components rather than melts. The relationship between Nd and Hf isotopic compositions in the Luzon volcanics show that the type of sediment subducted under an island arc is a determining factor in the control of the two isotopic systems in island arc environments.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at 相似文献

We report the results of a study of the magnetic properties of basalts recovered from the axis and from 0.7 m.y. old crust at 21° N and 19°30 S on the East Pacific Rise as well as from the 9°03 N overlapping spreading centers. The natural remanent magnetization of the samples from 21° N and 19°30 S decreases from the axis to 0.7 m.y. old crust as a result of low-temperature oxidation. In addition, the magnetic properties of the samples from the 21° N sites indicate that: (1) the magnetic susceptibility and the Koenigsberger ratio decrease with low-temperature alteration, (2) the Curie temperature, the median demagnetizing field and the remanent coercivity increase with maghemitization, (3) the saturation magnetization measured at room temperature does not change significantly with age. The magnetic properties of the basalt samples from the 9°03 N overlapping spreading centers indicate the presence of a high magnetization zone at the tip of the eastern spreading center. This high magnetization zone is the result of the high percentage of unaltered, fine-grained titanomagnetites present in the samples. These measurements are consistent with the results of the three-dimensional inversion of the magnetic field over the 9°03 N overlapping system [Sempere et al., 1984] as well as with detailed tectonic and geochemical investigations of overlapping spreading centers (Sempere and Macdonald, 1986a; Langmuir et al., 1986; Natland et al., 1986). The high magnetization zone appears to be the result of the eruption of highly fractionated basalts enriched in iron associated with the propagation of one of the limbs of the overlapping system into older lithosphere and not just to rapid decay, due to low-temperature oxidation, of the initially high magnetization of pillows extruded in the neovolcanic zone. 相似文献

For the insurance and reinsurance industries, earthquake loss estimation is crucial not only to adequately price its product
but also to manage the accumulation risk in the face of the ever-increasing exposure in highly seismic regions. Changes in
the built environment and a continuously evolving earthquake science make it a necessity for the industry to constantly refine
earthquake loss estimation models. In particular, it has been recognized for a long time that the vulnerability of buildings
to ground shaking is a key parameter in any earthquake risk model. Current methods tend either to rely on the limited historical
damage and loss data or on the numerical simulation of the response of individual buildings to the ground-shaking produced
by earthquakes. Although both methods have their advantages and pitfalls, we are proposing here a simple solution, using transparent
input data, that can be realistically used for the needs of the insurance and reinsurance industry, whether detailed information
about the insured structures is available or not. The resulting product is known as GEVES (Global Earthquake Vulnerability
Estimation System). It is primarily intended for evaluating the mean damage ratio (MDR) suffered by a portfolio of buildings
classified by use, under the action of a given earthquake scenario (i.e. an earthquake of given size at a given distance from
the portfolio of buildings). A key assumption was that macroseismic intensity rather than spectral displacement would be the
basis of loss estimation. The paper describes the model with emphasis on its structure and the justification for the assumptions
made. In addition to a new set of earthquake vulnerability functions, the paper also provides recommendations on some aspects
of the earthquake hazard, in particular about how to define macroseismic intensity at the site of interest, for a given earthquake
scenario. This paper also discusses validation of the GEVES model against calculated vulnerability approaches, and the treatment

Data assimilation is widely used to improve flood forecasting capability, especially through parameter inference requiring statistical information on the uncertain input parameters (upstream discharge, friction coefficient) as well as on the variability of the water level and its sensitivity with respect to the inputs. For particle filter or ensemble Kalman filter, stochastically estimating probability density function and covariance matrices from a Monte Carlo random sampling requires a large ensemble of model evaluations, limiting their use in real-time application. To tackle this issue, fast surrogate models based on polynomial chaos and Gaussian process can be used to represent the spatially distributed water level in place of solving the shallow water equations. This study investigates the use of these surrogates to estimate probability density functions and covariance matrices at a reduced computational cost and without the loss of accuracy, in the perspective of ensemble-based data assimilation. This study focuses on 1-D steady state flow simulated with MASCARET over the Garonne River (South-West France). Results show that both surrogates feature similar performance to the Monte-Carlo random sampling, but for a much smaller computational budget; a few MASCARET simulations (on the order of 10–100) are sufficient to accurately retrieve covariance matrices and probability density functions all along the river, even where the flow dynamic is more complex due to heterogeneous bathymetry. Understanding the spatio-temporal variability in groundwater recharge is a prerequisite to sustainable management of aquifers. Spatial analysis of groundwater stable isotopes uncovered predominant controls on groundwater recharge in the Nairobi aquifer system (NAS) and the South Coast aquifer (SC), two exemplar East African aquifers relied upon by 7 million people. We analysed 368 samples for stable isotopes and basic physico-chemical parameters. The NAS groundwater isotopes are controlled by precipitation orographic effects and enriched recharge from impounded lakes/wetlands; the SC isotopes are correlated with water-table depth influencing evapotranspiration. Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) data revealed groundwater recharge during months of heavy rains in the NAS, whilst the SC experiences spatio-temporally diffuse recharge. Inferred “isoscapes” show: in the NAS, (1) direct, rapid recharge favoured by faults, well-drained soils and ample rainfall in uplands, (2) delayed recharge from impounded lakes and wetlands in mid-lands, and (3) focused, event-based recharge in floodplains; and in the SC, diffuse recharge complicated by significant water-table evapotranspiration processes. 相似文献

The High Zagros Belt includes exposures of Lower Palaeozoic rocks in the core of several thrusted anticlines developed during the Cenozoic Zagros orogeny. The structural style and tectonic evolution of this area during the Palaeozoic remain poorly understood due to the complexity of the subsequent deformation. We present the preliminary results of a field study focusing on the structural geology of Palaeozoic rocks in this area. We confirm the existence of an angular unconformity below the Lower Permian Faraghan formation. In the geological literature, this unconformity is reported as the “Hercynian Unconformity” suggesting a relationship with the Hercynian (Variscan) orogeny, which affected Western Europe and westernmost Africa during the Carboniferous. Surprisingly the only observable structures sealed by this unconformity are N to NE trending normal faults and tilted blocks without any evidence of compressional deformation. This pre-Permian extensional deformation, which is general at the scale of the HZB, raises questions about the geodynamic significance of the “Hercynian unconformity” in the study area and, more generally, in the Arabian plate. 相似文献
