Environmental factors that influenced the rates of water exchange in a series of tidal, dead-end canals in Crystal River, Florida, were investigated by measuring the rates of dilution of the fluorescent dye Rhodamine WT. Water temperature regime was the most influential of these factors, with type of tidal cycle (spring or neap) and density of submersed vegetation (dominated byHydrilla verticillata) only affecting dye dilution rates in winter treatments. Dye half-lives were shortest in the summer (12–24 h), longest in the fall and spring (60–120 h), and most sensitive to water temperature patterns in the winter (26–60 h). These data provide useful information relating to the timing of hydrilla management using aquatic herbicides in spring-fed tidal systems. A mechanism is proposed that relates the canal water temperatures to tidal water movement and outputs from the adjacent Three Sisters Springs.  相似文献

The Quesnel River gold deposit (1.2 million tonnes grading 5.22 g/t Au in three separate zones) occurs within Takla Group volcanic rocks of Upper Triassic age proximal to an alkalic stock. The deposit occurs in amphibole-augite phyric, fragmental, basaltic rocks. Alteration has produced an assemblage of epidote-chloritetremolite-calcite-quartz with lesser pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, marcasite, galena, arsenopyrite and gold.The West Zone comprises a tabular, conformable sulfide body underlain by bedded, variably altered fragmental basaltic rocks and overlain by siltstone and argillite. In the Main Zone, highest gold grades occur adjacent to a sharp discordant alteration front with barren, strongly carbonatized, pyritic basaltic lapilli-tuff. It is overlain by siltstone and argillite and bounded to the east and a depth by a west dipping reverse fault. To the west the auriferous, propylitically altered, rocks grade laterally into lower grade and barren basaltic rocks.Oxygen(18O = + 9 to + 15) and carbon (13O= -14 to –7) isotopic signatures of calcite from carbonate-altered and propylitically altered rocks are similar. However, sulfur isotopic values for pyrite are different, with gold-associated pyrite (34S = –7 to –3) distinct from pyrite in carbonate altered rocks with (34S = + 8 to + 13).The carbonization occurred before complete induration of the basaltic fragmental rocks, whereas propylitization and gold plus sulfide precipitation is clearly epigenetic.  相似文献

Coastal salt marsh tidal creeks are thought to show less channel adjustment/movement relative to their terrestrial fluvial counterparts. We propose a mechanism for disturbance-mediated bank failure that may allow/initiate channel migration in these otherwise stable systems. The stability of tidal creeks is promoted by the extensive vegetation root structure along the banks. However, wrack mats (i.e., dead vegetation) deposited on creek banks can cause the death of below-ground vegetation leading to bare, unstable banks that may slump into the channel. We measured the frequency of bank failures associated with wrack-disturbed sites along three creeks on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA to determine whether these sites were vulnerable to erosion. Approximately 81% of the disturbed sites showed signs of bank failure. Therefore, wrack-induced bank failure may potentially lead to channel migration in creeks previously believed to be static landscape features.  相似文献

The fractal is presented as a method for describing the geometry of particles, with particular reference to the breakdown of granular soils and the formation of loess. The preliminary results are reported: (a) for the extent to which silt due to comminution exhibits a fractal distribution; (b) the tendency of fractal dimension to change with the comminution process; and (c) the relationship between fractal dimension describing particle size distribution and the grinding time. Laboratory simulation confirms the general tendency of fractal characteristics to reflect the size reduction process.  相似文献

The Global Positioning System is a constellation of 24–28 satellites, which can be used to define a global terrestrial reference frame. Daily offsets between a GPS defined frame and ITRF2000 have been estimated using more than a decade of GPS observations from 1990–2001. A linear fit to the full span of data shows agreement between the two frames at the level of –1 ppb and –0.1 ppb/year for scale, 5 mm and 0 mm/year for the X component of center of mass, –2 mm and –3 mm/year for the Y component, and 4 mm and 6 mm/year for the Z component. GPS is a viable tool for defining the global reference frame either alone, or in combination with other geodetic techniques. Electronic Publication  相似文献

A shortcoming of freeze corers has been the inability to collect long cores in stiff sediments. We describe a hammerdriven freeze corer that collects undisturbed sediment cores up to 1.3 m in length in stiff or soft lake sediments. The corer was tested in prairie, montane and alpine lakes of western Canada. For these stiff sediments, conventional (gravity-only) freeze coring methods collected cores ranging from 25–59 cm compared with 100–124 cm for our hammer-driven device. The maximum length of cores could exceed 1.3 m if a longer core barrel was constructed.  相似文献

The results from two different types of gas measurement, telemetered in situ monitoring of reducing gases on the dome and airborne measurements of sulfur dioxide emission rates in the plume by correlation spectrometry, suggest that the combination of these two methods is particularly effective in detecting periods of enhanced degassing that intermittently punctuate the normal background leakage of gaseous effluent from Mount St Helens to the atmosphere. Gas events were recorded before lava extrusion for each of the four dome-building episodes at Mount St Helens since mid-1984. For two of the episodes, precursory reducing gas peaks were detected, whereas during three of the episodes, COSPEC measurements recorded precursory degassing of sulfur dioxide. During one episode (October 1986), both reducing gas monitoring and SO2 emission rate measurements simultaneously detected a large gas release several hours before lava extrusion. Had both types of gas measurements been operational during each of the dome-building episodes, it is thought that both would have recorded precursory signals for all four episodes. Evidence from the data presented herein suggests that increased degassing at Mount St Helens becomes detectable when fresh upward-moving magma is between 2 km and a few hundred meters below the base of the dome and between about 60 and 12 hours before the surface extrusion of lava.  相似文献

Climate models project warmer temperatures for the north‐west USA, which will result in reduced snowpacks and decreased summer streamflow. This paper examines how groundwater, snowmelt, and regional climate patterns control discharge at multiple time scales, using historical records from two watersheds with contrasting geological properties and drainage efficiencies. In the groundwater‐dominated watershed, aquifer storage and the associated slow summer recession are responsible for sustaining discharge even when the seasonal or annual water balance is negative, while in the runoff‐dominated watershed subsurface storage is exhausted every summer. There is a significant 1 year cross‐correlation between precipitation and discharge in the groundwater‐dominated watershed (r = 0·52), but climatic factors override geology in controlling the inter‐annual variability of streamflow. Warmer winters and earlier snowmelt over the past 60 years have shifted the hydrograph, resulting in summer recessions lasting 17 days longer, August discharges declining 15%, and autumn minimum discharges declining 11%. The slow recession of groundwater‐dominated streams makes them more sensitive than runoff‐dominated streams to changes in snowmelt amount and timing. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
