This paper deals with the incidence and geometry of lattice bending in calcite of naturally strained marble and possible relations in time to associated {01¯12} twinning, as revealed by microscopic examination with a universal stage. Microscopic technique and graphic treatment of data with a view to identifying the relation in time of bending to twinning, and possible glide mechanisms involved in the bending process are reviewed as a basis for present and subsequent investigation of this general topic.In most instances development of surviving thin e twins postdates bending of the host crystal (such twins everywhere are rationally oriented). Rarely (in contrast with experimental experience) some thin twins are slightly irrational (Le lamellae) and apparently developed in the final stages of bending. Thick twins (a few tens of microns wide) on the other hand rather commonly predate or are synchronous with bending.The geometry of bending (external rotation) — especially for rotation less than 25° —commonly is compatible with models (based on experimental experience) of simple translation in the strained domains. The commonest translation system so identified is on {10¯11}, with sense of shear, where recognizable, either negative or positive. Translation on {02¯21} is relatively rare. Unexpectedly there is rather strong but not conclusive evidence of translation on {0001} parallel to an a axis. This mechanism, hitherto never identified with certainty, is now here documented unequivocally in a crystal of calcite experimentally strained at 300° C, 5 kb. 相似文献

During the early development of the Rhodesian craton the regional metamorphism of some of the oldest rocks of Bulawayan and Shamvalan age, was apparently progressive and is expressed in terms of a clearly defined metamorphic zonation established under conditions of relatively high geothermal gradients in which very low grades typical of the central craton pass into extremely high grades that define the cratonic margin particularly within the Zambezi and the Limpopo belts. The distribution of the associated early granitic rocks relates to the metamorphic pattern, thus implying that both metamorphism and granite development were due to thermal highs centred on the Limpopo mobile belt and possibly the Zambezi belt. 相似文献

Thermal demagnetization of red and drab sandstones from the St. Bees Sandstone shows a wide range of directional stability. After the removal of a metastable secondary magnetization at temperatures up to 300°C red sandstones may show stable or unstable magnetization. Experiments indicate that both the stable and unstable magnetization is carried by coarse haematite particles (specularite).Drab sandstones, which have been subject to reduction and dissolution of haematite are generally unstable but specimens with a stable NRM occur and this must be carried by specularite because the pigment has been removed from these specimens.The stable magnetization is believed to have developed during deposition and early diagenesis by the oxidation of detrital iron oxides. Pole positions correspond to known Triassic poles and there are abundant normal and reversed zones typical of the Lower Triassic.The unstable magnetization of the red sandstones is apparently due to the development of authigenic overgrowths of haematite on the detrital specularites. This phase of authigenesis may have taken place over a long time, and after significant changes in the ambient geomagnetic field resulting in complex magnetizations in individual grains and hence whole rocks. 相似文献

Egg production rates and/or hatching success in the copepods Acartia clausi, Calanus helgolandicus and Temora longicornis were negatively affected by a late spring (May–June 2003) phytoplankton bloom in the North Adriatic Sea, dominated mainly by the large diatom Cerataulina pelagica. Highest total concentrations of 3.3·104 cells·ml?1 were located in the vicinity of the Po River, which also corresponded to the area where the highest numbers of phaeophorbides were measured (0.779, 0.528 and 0.419 μg·l?1, respectively, compared to an average of the remaining stations of 0.183 ± 0.049 SD), suggesting some grazing on the bloom. Phytoplankton biomass in terms of carbon was dominated by diatoms, representing on average 42% of total phytoplankton carbon and more than 80% at several stations. Cerataulina pelagica, Cyclotella spp., Chaetoceros spp. and small unidentified centric diatoms dominated the diatom community numerically but C. pelagica was by far the dominant diatom in terms of carbon due to its large cell size. This species represented more than 60% of the diatom biomass at nine of the 14 stations sampled, and was absent only at one station, which was the most offshore station sampled during the cruise. Although polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) were not detected, other oxylipins which are hydroxy and keto derivatives of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids that affect copepod reproduction were found in these samples. Hence, we can attribute the negative impact of diatoms not only to PUAs, as previously believed, but also to these compounds. The identification, remedial treatment, and monitoring of contaminated sediments are among the priorities for managers of the Tampa Bay Estuary. Tampa Bay, as an urbanized estuary, is subject to the input of watershed sources of chemical contaminants, including metals, pesticides, and organic chemicals. Although the use of biological indicators and their incorporation into multi-metric indices is not new, the refinement and applications of such techniques for determining environmental condition still require further development and exploration. We present a single Tampa Bay Benthic Index (TBBI) that was developed specifically for Tampa Bay. Stepwise discriminant analysis was applied to a comprehensive list of potential benthic metrics. Results from the stepwise procedure identified the metrics that best discriminated between "healthy" and "degraded" conditions, as defined by sediment contaminant effect levels and dissolved oxygen. Discriminant analysis was then applied to the resultant three variables to determine the linear combination for the index. 相似文献

Clumped isotope thermometry of carbonatites as an indicator of diagenetic alteration 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We measure the clumped isotopic signature of carbonatites to assess the integrity of the clumped isotope paleothermometer over long timescales (107-109 years) and the susceptibility of the proxy to closed system re-equilibration of isotopes during burial diagenesis. We find pristine carbonatites that have primary oxygen isotope signatures, along with a Carrara marble standard, do not record clumped isotope signatures lighter than 0.31‰ suggesting atoms of carbon and oxygen freely exchange within the carbonate lattice at temperatures above 250-300 °C. There is no systematic trend in the clumped isotope signature of pristine carbonatites with age, although partial re-equilibration to lower temperatures can occur if a carbonatite has been exposed to burial temperatures for long periods of time. We conclude that the solid-state re-ordering of carbon and oxygen atoms is sufficiently slow to enable the use of clumped isotope paleothermometry on timescales of 108 years, but that diagenetic resetting can still occur, even without bulk recrystallization. In addition to the carbonatite data, an inorganic calibration of the clumped isotope paleothermometer for low temperature carbonates (7.5-77 °C) is presented and highlights the need for further inter-lab standardization. 相似文献

Thallium(I) has been added to estuarine sediment suspended in various natural and artificial aqueous samples in order to examine its reactivity under simulated estuarine conditions. In river water and sea water, adsorption of Tl to sediment was so rapid that a period of desorption-relaxation succeeded instantaneous adsorption. Entire time-courses could not be fitted with a conventional kinetic model, but pseudo-first-order forward and reverse rate constants of 0.0044 and 0.30 h−1, respectively, were derived for river water by omitting measurements defining the adsorption “overshoot” observed at the onset of the experiment. The extent of adsorption after a 16 h equilibration period was considerably greater in river water than in sea water, and displayed a quasi-linear increase with increasing pH over the range 2-9 in the former but no clear dependence on pH in the latter. A logarithmic reduction in the sediment-water distribution coefficient, KD, was observed on estuarine mixing from river water to sea water. Experiments conducted in electrolyte solutions coupled with inorganic equilibrium speciation modeling revealed that the effect was the combined result of a reduction in the activity of Tl+, an increase in the proportion of TlCl0 and increasing competition for adsorption sites from K+ with an increase in salinity. Overall, there was little experimental evidence for either the oxidation of Tl+ or its complexation by dissolved organic matter. The findings of the investigation are discussed in terms of the likely behavior of Tl in estuaries. 相似文献

“I’m an imaginary figure”: Unravelling the mobility and marginalisation of Scottish Gypsy Travellers
Gypsy Travellers have a long history of marginalisation in Scotland, but their mobility remains an issue of particular contention. Drawing upon a series of interviews with Gypsy Travellers in the North-East of Scotland, this paper uncovers how power and politics permeate discourses on movement to legitimise the spatial ordering of this traditionally nomadic group. The paper begins by exploring the more hidden and subtle aspects of mobility, such as the emotional and imaginative ties to travel. It then shifts to document how Gypsy Travellers’ geographies have been compromised by discriminatory policies and practices, which demonstrate a misunderstanding of the heterogeneity of their mobility. Consequently, increasingly punitive policies have pushed many Gypsy Travellers to abandon their travelling ways to move into “fixed” housing, while others have been forced into states of perpetual motion. The overall goal of the paper is to unravel the discursive constructions of movement in the context of institutionalised power and to document the spatial ordering of Gypsy Travellers’ lives, whose marginality has been legitimised by laws, ideologically sustained and reproduced in policy documents. 相似文献

Macquarie Harbour in southwest Tasmania, Australia, has been affected severely by the establishment of mines in nearby Queenstown
in the 1890s. As well as heavy metal-laden acid rock drainage from the Mount Lyell mine area, over 100 Mt of mine tailings
and slag were discharged into the Queen and Ring Rivers, with an estimated 10 Mt of mine tailings building a delta of ca.
2.5 km2 and ca. 10 Mt of fine tailings in the harbour beyond the delta. Coring of sediments throughout Macquarie Harbour indicated
that mine tailings accreted most rapidly close to the King River delta source with a significant reduction in thickness of
tailings and heavy metal contamination with increasing distance from the King River source. Close to the King River delta
the mine tailings are readily discriminated from the background estuarine sediments on the basis of visual logging of the
core (laminations, colour), sediment grain size, sediment magnetic susceptibility and elemental geochemistry, especially concentrations
of the heavy metals Cu, Zn and Pb. The high heavy metal concentrations are demonstrated by the very high contamination factors
(CF > 6) for Cu and Zn, with CF values mostly >50 for Cu for the mine-impacted sediments. Although the addition of mine waste
into the King River catchment has ceased, the catchment continues to be a source of these heavy metals due to acid rock drainage
and remobilisation of mine waste in storage in the river banks, river bed and delta. The addition of heavy metals to the harbour
sourced from the Mount Lyell mines preceded the advent of direct tailings disposal into the Queen River in 1915 with the metals
probably provided by acid rock drainage from the Mount Lyell mining area. 相似文献
