To examine the roles of settlement and early post-settlement processes in patterns of recruitment of the soft shell clamMya arenaria, abundance of juvenileMya at three intertidal sites in Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts, was monitored over two settlement seasons. Two peaks of settlement occurred in 1998 (July and September) and one peak was recorded in June 1999, indicating that a late season settlement event is not a consistent feature at this site. Abundance of recent settlers (i.e., early recruits, < 1 week past settlement) varied significantly among the tidal flats (sites) that were separated by hundreds of meters to kilometers, but not among plots meters apart. Differences in abundance of settlers likely resulted in these differences in early-recruit abundance among sites. Settlement was greatest at the site with the greatest variability in flow speed. Sites also differed to some extent in their sediment characteristics and macrofaunal assemblages, which may influence larval substrate choice. Between-site differences in abundance ofMya decreased after settlement. The rate of decline of abundance varied among cohorts and sites. Comparison of abundance of recent settlers (up to 145,000 m−2) to that of juveniles > 3-mm shell length at the end of the settlement season (up to 60 m−2) indicated large losses of individuals during the early post-settlement period. This study demonstrates that spatial patterns inMya abundance can change substantially during the early post-settlement period, and that high mortality rates can result in cohorts contributing little to the population size even when rates of settlement are high. 相似文献
If water was ever present on Mars, as suggested by geomorphological features, then much of the surface and subsurface may have experienced chemical weathering. Among those materials most readily altered is olivine, which has been identified on the Martian surface with IR spectroscopy and Mossbauer techniques and occurs in Martian meteorites. We use geochemical models of olivine dissolution kinetics to constrain the residence time of olivine on the surface of Mars in the presence of liquid water. From these models, we have calculated maximum dissolution rates and minimum residence times for olivine as a function of temperature, pH, Fe-composition, and particle size. In general, the most favorable conditions for olivine dissolution are fayalite-rich compositions, small particle sizes, high temperatures, and acidic solutions that are far from equilibrium. The least favorable conditions for olivine dissolution are forsterite-rich compositions, large particle sizes, ultra-low temperatures, and a neutral pH solution near equilibrium. By using kinetic models of olivine dissolution to bound dissolution rates and residence times, we can make inferences about the temporal extent of aqueous alteration on the surface of Mars. Under favorable conditions (pH 2, 5 °C, and far from equilibrium) a relatively large 0.1 cm (radius) particle of Fo65 composition can completely dissolve in 370 years. Particles may last 102–104 times longer under less favorable conditions. However, residence times of a few million years or less are small compared to the age of most of the Martian surface. The survival of olivine on the surface of Mars, especially in older terrains, implies that contact with aqueous solutions has been limited and wet periods on Mars have been short-lived. 相似文献
Abstract– We present initial results from hydrocode modeling of impacts on Al‐1100 foils, undertaken to aid the interstellar preliminary examination (ISPE) phase for the NASA Stardust mission interstellar dust collector tray. We used Ansys’ AUTODYN to model impacts of micrometer‐scale, and smaller projectiles onto Stardust foil (100 μm thick Al‐1100) at velocities up to 300 km s?1. It is thought that impacts onto the interstellar dust collector foils may have been made by a combination of interstellar dust particles (ISP), interplanetary dust particles (IDP) on comet, and asteroid derived orbits, β micrometeoroids, nanometer dust in the solar wind, and spacecraft derived secondary ejecta. The characteristic velocity of the potential impactors thus ranges from <<1 to a few km s?1 (secondary ejecta), approximately 4–25 km s?1 for ISP and IDP, up to hundreds of km s?1 for the nanoscale dust reported by Meyer‐Vernet et al. (2009) . There are currently no extensive experimental calibrations for the higher velocity conditions, and the main focus of this work was therefore to use hydrocode models to investigate the morphometry of impact craters, as a means to determine an approximate impactor speed, and thus origin. The model was validated against existing experimental data for impact speeds up to approximately 30 km s?1 for particles ranging in density from 2.4 kg m?3 (glass) to 7.8 kg m?3 (iron). Interpolation equations are given to predict the crater depth and diameter for a solid impactor with any diameter between 100 nm and 4 μm and density between 2.4 and 7.8 kg m?3. 相似文献
Surrogate models are becoming increasingly popular for storm surge predictions. Using existing databases of storm simulations, developed typically during regional flood studies, these models provide fast-to-compute, data-driven approximations quantifying the expected storm surge for any new storm (not included in the training database). This paper considers the development of such a surrogate model for Delaware Bay, using a database of 156 simulations driven by synthetic tropical cyclones and offering predictions for a grid that includes close to 300,000 computational nodes within the geographical domain of interest. Kriging (Gaussian Process regression) is adopted as the surrogate modeling technique, and various relevant advancements are established. The appropriate parameterization of the synthetic storm database is examined. For this, instead of the storm features at landfall, the features when the storm is at closest distance to some representative point of the domain of interest are investigated as an alternative parametrization, and are found to produce a better surrogate. For nodes that remained dry for some of the database storms, imputation of the surge using a weighted k nearest neighbor (kNN) interpolation is considered to fill in the missing data. The use of a secondary, classification surrogate model, combining logistic principal component analysis and Kriging, is examined to address instances for which the imputed surge leads to misclassification of the node condition. Finally, concerns related to overfitting for the surrogate model are discussed, stemming from the small size of the available database. These concerns extend to both the calibration of the surrogate model hyper-parameters, as well as to the validation approaches adopted. During this process, the benefits from the use of principal component analysis as a dimensionality reduction technique, and the appropriate transformation and scaling of the surge output are examined in detail.
Small, irregular terraces on hillslopes, or terracettes, are common landscape features throughout west central China. Despite their prevalence, there is limited understanding of the nature of these topographic features, the processes that form them, and the role humans played in their formation. We used an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the geology, ecology, and cultural history of terracette development within Jiuzhaigou National Park, Sichuan Province, China. Terracettes occur on south facing, 20° slopes at 2500 m elevation, which appears to coincide with places people historically preferred to build villages. Ethnographic interviews suggest that traditional swidden agricultural cycles removed tree roots, causing the loess sediments to lose cohesion, slump, and the terrace risers to retreat uphill over time. This evidence is supported by landslide debris at terracette faces. Archaeological analysis of terracette sites reveal remains of rammed spread soil structures, bones, stone tools, and ceramics dating from at least 2200 years before present within a distinct paleosol layer. Radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating of terracette sediments ranged in age from between 1500 and 2000 14C yr BP and between 16 and 0.30 ka, respectively. These multiple lines of evidence indicate a long history of human habitation within Jiuzhaigou National Park and, taken together, suggest strong links between terracette formation and human-landuse interactions. 相似文献
