Talc and/or pyrophyllite have been detected as suspended particulates in the waters of the Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean). Differing from similar findings reported in some recent works by many authors, the presence of these silicates is completely attributable to unavoidable contamination during collection and analytical processing of the water samples.  相似文献

Gravity results are available from radio Doppler data acquired by the Deep Space Network during the encounter of the Cassini spacecraft with Enceladus in February 2005. We report the mass of Enceladus to be (1.0798±0.0016)×1020 kg, which implies a density of . For a core made of hydrated silicates with a density of 2500 kg m−3 the core radius is ∼190 km and the quadrupole moment C22∼1.4×10−3. If Enceladus is in hydrostatic equilibrium, the larger than previously anticipated density implies that the recently proposed secondary spin-orbit resonance cannot be present. Therefore, the source of endogenic activity of Enceladus remains unexplained.  相似文献

The finite element interpretation is discussed of two load tests carried out on bentonite slurry piles bored in granular soils. The first case concerns a pile belonging to a 12 pile group. An axisymmetric finite element model that reproduces, with reasonable accuracy, the experimental results is developed. The model is then extended to three-dimensional conditions and applied to the analysis of the entire group. The results suggest some comments on the different assumptions that can be adopted in the calculations and on their effects on the global load–settlement curve of the pile group. The second case concerns a load test in which, in addition to the load–settlement data, also the axial strains along the pile were measured through electrical extensometers. The numerical back analyses highlight an apparent contradiction between the two sets of experimental data. On their bases some conclusions are drawn on the possible causes of the observed inconsistency and on the influence of the construction technology on the interaction between the pile tip and the soil underneath it.  相似文献

Soil erosion by water is a pressing environmental problem caused and suffered by agriculture in Mediterranean environments. Soil conservation practices can contribute to alleviating this problem. The aim of this study is to gain more profound knowledge of the effects of conservation practices on soil losses by linking crop management and soil status to runoff and sediment losses measured at the outlet of a catchment during seven years. The catchment has 27.42 ha and is located in a commercial farm in southern Spain, where a package of soil conservation practices is an essential component of the farming system. The catchment is devoted to irrigated annual crops with maize–cotton–wheat as the primary rotation. Mean annual rainfall‐induced runoff coefficient was 0.14 and mean annual soil loss was 2.4 Mg ha?1 y?1. Irrigation contributed to 40% of the crop water supply, but the amount of runoff and sediment yield that it generated was negligible. A Principal Components Analysis showed that total soil loss is determined by the magnitude of the event (rainfall and runoff depths, duration) and by factors related to the aggressiveness of the events (rainfall intensity and preceding soil moisture). A third component showed the importance of crop coverage to reduce sediment losses. Cover crops grown during autumn and early winter and crop residues protecting the soil surface enhanced soil conservation notably. Long and complete climatic data series are a fundamental resource for scientific research on climate change. Data quality is important, and missing value or data gap management is a key process that must be dealt with carefully to produce reliable datasets. Although a large variety of techniques are available for gap-filling, a widespread strategy is to consider a dataset reliable if the rate of missing data is below a given threshold. However this strategy varies from study to study. The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of missing daily values on the estimation of monthly average temperature indices. The relationship between the error of the estimate and the presence of random or consecutive missing values, as well as data series autocorrelation is also analyzed. A theoretical, a linear and a nonlinear model to estimate the maximum error at the 95 % confidence interval are tested on data series provided by national and worldwide networks of stations. Consecutive missing values have an important effect on error estimation due to autocorrelation of temperature data series. On our dataset, the mean and standard deviation of the error for five consecutive missing values (0.27?±?0.05 °C) on a normalized daily series (σ?=?1) was higher than for five random missing values (0.14?±?0.006 °C). A nonlinear model taking into account the number of consecutive missing values is able to estimate the error and its performance is less affected by the presence of consecutive missing values than the other proposed models.  相似文献

The Fisher-Shannon information (FS) plane, defined by the Fisher information measure (FIM), and the Shannon entropy power, N x , is a robust tool for investigating the complex dynamics of time series. In the FS plane, earthquakes and quarry blasts measured in Vértes Hills (Hungary) are significantly discriminated from each other. Furthermore, the results of the receiving-operating characteristics (ROC) analysis reveal that FIM is a classifier more efficient than N x in discriminating earthquakes from quarry blasts.  相似文献
