Low aspartic acid d:l ratios and modern collagenlike concentration values indicate that amino acids in bones from the Rancho La Brea asphalt deposit, Los Angeles, California are better preserved than amino acids in bones of equivalent age that have not been preserved in asphalt. Amino acids were recovered from 10 Rancho La Brea bone samples which range in age from less than 200 to greater than 36,000 yr. The calibrated rates of aspartic acid racemization range from 2.1 to 5.0 × 10?6yr?1. Although this wide range of rate constants decreases the level of confidence for age estimates, use of the larger rate constant of 5.0 × 10?6yr?1 provides minimum age estimates which fit the known stratigraphic and chronologic records of the Rancho La Brea deposits.  相似文献

In Ashkelon two different man-environment interactions have stimulated coastal slope erosion by enhancing runoff volumes. The first type of interaction is recreation and the second is the result of Bedouin pastoral nomadism. The impact of recreation creates impervious surfaces such as walkways, parking lots, and stairways, in addition to storm sewer outlets that concentrate and enlarge runoff volumes. The impact of pastoral nomadism is limited to the crumbling of the slope surfaces by animal grazing. This creates favorable environments for rapid runoff and erosion. The results of these interactions are a coastal slope surface inundated by dense gulley networks. Large alluvial fans are also built-up at the slope base. Incremental amounts of Na2O and K2O added to immiscible melts in the MgO-CaO-TiO2-Al2O3 SiO2 system cause a decrease in critical temperature, phase separation and change in the pattern of Al2O3 partitioning. Al2O3, which is concentrated in the low SiO2 immiscible melts in the alkali-free system, is increasingly partitioned into the high-SiO2 immiscible melt as the alkali/aluminium ratio is increased. However, K2O is more effective than Na2O in stabilizing Al2O2 in the SiO2-rich melt. The coordination changes occurring in the aluminosilicate melts upon the addition of the alkali oxides are described by CaAl2O4+2SiOK=2KAlO2+SiOCaOSi where K (or Na) displaces Ca as the charge-balancing cation for the networkforming AlO4 tetrahedra. The increased stability of the AlO4 species in the highly polymerized SiO2-rich melt and the consequent shrinkage of the miscibility gap is ascribed to positive configurational entropy and negative enthalpy changes associated with the formation of K, Na-AlO4 species. Element partition systematics indicate that (Na, K)AlO2 species favor the more polymerized, CaAl2O4 and TiO2 species, the less polymerized silicate structure in the melt.  相似文献

We performed hydrous partial melting experiments at shallow pressures (0.2 GPa) under slightly oxidizing conditions (NNO oxygen buffer) on oceanic cumulate gabbros drilled by ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) cruises to evaluate whether the partial melting of oceanic gabbro can generate SiO2-rich melts with compositions typical of oceanic plagiogranites. The experimental melts of the low-temperature runs broadly overlap those of natural plagiogranites. At 940 °C, the normalized SiO2 contents of the experimental melts of all systems range between 60 and 61 wt%, and at 900 °C between 63 and 68 wt%. These liquids are characterized by low TiO2 and FeOtot contents, similar to those of natural plagiogranites from the plutonic section of the oceanic crust, but in contrast to Fe and Ti-rich low-temperature experimental melts obtained in MORB systems at ~950 °C. The ~1,500-m-long drilled gabbroic section of ODP Hole 735B (Legs 118 and 176) at the Southwest Indian Ridge contains numerous small plagiogranitic veins often associated with zones which are characterized by high-temperature shearing. The compositions of the experimental melts obtained at low temperatures match those of the natural plagiogranitic veins, while the compositions of the crystals of low-temperature runs correspond to those of minerals from high-temperature microscopic veins occurring in the gabbroic section of the Hole 735B. This suggests that the observed plagiogranitic veins are products of a partial melting process triggered by a water-rich fluid phase. If the temperature estimations for high-temperature shear zones are correct (up to 1,000 °C), and a water-rich fluid phase is present, the formation of plagiogranites by partial melting of gabbros is probably a widespread phenomenon in the genesis of the ocean crust.Editorial responsibility: J. Phase relations of a phonolite (K1) and a tephri-phonolite (K2) from the Upper Miocene lavas in the Southeast Province of the Kerguelen Archipelago have been investigated in the P/T range 100–500 MPa and 700–900 °C at two fO2 conditions (~ NNO and ~ NNO+2.3) to clarify the differentiation and pre-eruptive conditions of these magmas. Crystallization experiments were performed in cold seal pressure vessels (CSPV) and internally heated pressure vessels (IHPV) at various XH2O, under reducing (log fO2 ~ NNO) and oxidizing conditions (log fO2 ~ NNO+2.3). Under reducing conditions, the resulting phase assemblage for K1 was: titanomagnetite, nepheline, alkali feldspar, clinopyroxene and biotite; under oxidizing conditions, the assemblage was: magnetite, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, nepheline, titanite (minerals given in the order of appearance with decreasing T at 200 MPa for 4 wt% water in the melt). It is emphasized that an effect of fO2 on the phase stability of feldspars and feldspathoides was observed. Comparison of the natural and experimental phase assemblages shows that the pre-eruptive conditions for K1 must have been in the log fO2 range NNO+1–NNO+2, at pressures above 200–250 MPa. Assuming a temperature of 800 °C, the water content of the melt is constrained to be between 4 and 6 wt% H2O. The pre-eruptive fO2 conditions for the less evolved sample K2 are more oxidizing with log fO2 close to NNO+2.3. To obtain the chemical Th*–Pb isochron ages and surface maps of monazite crystals in igneous and metamorphic rocks from the southern Brazilian Shield, we employ Th–U-total Pb dating by an electron probe microanalyzer. The ages of two Trans-Amazonian metamorphic events are given by a felsic, garnet-bearing granulite from the Santa Maria Chico granulitic complex. The age of the first event, at approximately 2.35 Ga, was obtained by surface mapping in a grain included in garnet. The dating of the second event, 1899±43 Ma, is in agreement with previous data obtained in zircon crystals with sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe. Other determinations belong to the Brasiliano cycle. In the São Gabriel block, an age of 643±129 Ma was obtained on monazite from a staurolite-garnet schist of the Cambaizinho Formation, whereas a staurolite-bearing schist from the Passo Feio complex yielded a 510±68 Ma age. Several units in the Dom Feliciano belt were dated, including the biotite-sillimanite gneisses of the Várzea do Capivarita complex (552±90 Ma), the sillimanite-garnet gneisses of Camboriú complex (565±77 Ma), the Três Figueiras granite (558±57 Ma), and the Plaza Itapema granite (545±55 Ma). The ages presented in this study, obtained through monazite chemical dating, are confirmed through comparison with previous data regarding zircon crystals from the same geological units.  相似文献

We have analysed the kinetics of Argon and CO2 diffusion in simplified iron free rhyolitic to hawaiitic melts using the diffusion couple technique. The concentration distance profiles of Ar and CO2 were measured with electron microprobe analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, respectively. Error functions were fitted to the symmetrical concentration distance profiles to extract the diffusion coefficients.In the temperature range 1373 to 1773 K the activation energies for Ar diffusion range from 169 ± 20 to 257 ± 62 kJ mol−1. Ar diffusivity increases exponentially with the degree of depolymerisation. In contrast, the mobility of total CO2, that is identical to Ar mobility in rhyolitic melt, keeps constant with changing bulk composition from rhyolite to hawaiite. CO2 speciation at 1623 K and 500 MPa was modeled for the range of compositions studied using the diffusion data of Ar and total CO2 in combination with network former diffusion calculated from viscosity data. Within error this model is in excellent agreement with CO2 speciation data extrapolated from temperatures near the glass transition temperature for dacitic melt composition. This model shows that even in highly depolymerised hawaiitic and tholeiitic melts molecular CO2 is a stable species and contributes 70 to 80% to the total CO2 diffusion, respectively.  相似文献

Photoreactivation of Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 and Yersinia enterolytica ATCC 4780 after irradiation with a 222 nm krypton‐chloride excimer lamp compared to a 254 nm mercury lamp was investigated under laboratory conditions. The bacteria samples were irradiated each with different doses of both wavelengths. After irradiation one sample of the bacteria was illuminated with fluorescent light, the other sample was stored in darkness to prevent photoreactivation. The inactivation curves were determined. Without photoreactivation, an irradiation of 69 J/m2 at 254 nm was sufficient for a 4 log reduction for E. coli, and only 59 J/m2 for Y. enterolytica. To get a 4 log reduction with following photoreactivation, 182 J/m2 were necessary for E. coli and 180 J/m2 for Y. enterolytica. After irradiation with the 222 nm excimer lamp the ratios were different. Without photoreactivation, an irradiation of 106 J/m2 at 222 nm was sufficient for a 4 log reduction for E. coli and 88 J/m2 for Y. enterolytica. With photoreactivation 161 J/m2 were necessary for E. coli to get a 4 log reduction and 117 J/m2 for Y. enterolytica. When the photoreactivation after irradiation is excluded, the mercury lamp with 254 nm clearly shows better results regarding inactivation.
