In this paper, a comprehensive study is carried out to examine the possibility of dynamic instability produced in soil‐structure systems using an ensemble of 50 pulse‐like records. A number of structural models with various vibration periods varying from 0.1 to 2 s are used in this study. The superstructure is simulated as a non‐linear SDOF oscillator with a two‐segment backbone curve having negative post‐yield stiffness. The soil is idealized based on the cone model concept widely used for practical purposes. The results of this investigation demonstrate that as the pulse period increases, the collapse relative lateral strength ratio decreases and probability of dynamic instability enhances. Moreover, soil flexibility makes the system dynamically more unstable, and as the non‐dimensional frequency increases, the collapse relative lateral strength ratio highly reduces. Additionally, the aspect ratio has insignificant effects on the collapse relative lateral strength ratio. Furthermore, comparison of the collapse relative lateral strength ratios resulting from pulse‐like motions with those obtained from studies under non‐pulse‐like motions (Miranda and Akkar; FEMA 440) for fixed‐base conditions shows that high‐velocity pulses exacerbate the dynamic instability problem and decrease the collapse relative lateral strength ratio. The need for irrigation water in arid and semi-arid regions is mostly supplied by groundwater. Furthermore, the agricultural development in these areas is not generally based on a comprehensive plan, which can cause aquifers depletion. On the other hand, to properly manage an aquifer and to have an optimal crop plan, the stochastic nature of the different parameters of a groundwater system such as groundwater recharge and water demands should be taken into consideration. In this paper, we develop an explicit stochastic optimization model for Firouzabad aquifer in Iran. This formulation is based on the first and second moment analysis for groundwater head which has been initially proposed for surface water resources management by Fletcher and Ponnambalam. We extend the model to create a new random withdrawal policy for conjunctive use setting in which the randomness in available precipitation is taken into account. The interesting point is that the model provides the respective probabilities of shortage and surplus without imposing the extra decision variables into the optimization model. A genetic-based algorithm is used to solve the stochastic nonlinear and non-convex formulation. The outcome results indicate that the current crop pattern should be changed, that is, the allocated areas of some crops have to be meaningfully reduced. Finally, to validate our model efficiency, we demonstrate that how much close the statistical characteristics obtained from the optimization model are to those estimated from the Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, the optimal benefits obtained using the proposed optimization model are as suitable as the benefits achieved using the corresponding Monte Carlo-based optimization model.  相似文献

We develop an inversion procedure using the total variation (TV) regularization method as a stabilizing function to invert surface gravity data to retrieve 3-D density models of geologic structures with sharp boundaries. The developed inversion procedure combines several effective algorithms to solve the TV regularized problem. First, a matrix form of the gradient vector is designed using the Kronecker product to numerically approximate the 3-D TV function. The piecewise polynomial truncated singular value decomposition (PP-TSVD) algorithm is then used to solve the TV regularized inverse problem. To obtain a density model with depth resolution, we use a sensitivity-based depth weighting function. Finally, we apply the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to select the best combination of the PP-TSVD algorithm and the depth weighting function parameters. 3-D simulations conducted with synthetic data show that this approach produces sub-surface images in which the structures are well separated in terms of sharp boundaries, without the need of a priori detailed density model. The method applied to a real dataset from a micro-gravimetry survey of Gotvand Dam, southwestern Iran, clearly delineates subsurface cavities starting from a depth of 40 m within the area of the dam reservoir.  相似文献

One of the most powerful functions of Geographic Information System for Transportation(GIS-T)is Dynamic Segmentation(DS),which is used to increase the efficiency and precision of road management by generating segments based on attributes.The road segments describing transportation data are both spatially and temporally referenced.For a variety of transportation applications,historical road segments must be preserved.This study presents an appropriate approach to preserve and retrieve the historical road segments efficiently.In the proposed method,only the portions of segments of a time stamp that have been changed into new segments rather than storing the entire segments for every old time stamp are recorded.The storage of these portions is based on the type of changes.A recursive algorithm is developed to retrieve all segments for every old time stamp.Experimental results using real data of Tehran City,Iran justify the strength of the proposed approach in many aspects.An important achievement of the results is that database volume for 2006,2007 and 2008 within the Historical Line Event Table(HLET)is reduced by 70%,80%and 78%,respectively.The proposed method has the potential to prevent from vast data redundancy and the unnecessary storage of entire segments for each time stamp.Since the present technique is performed on ordinary plain tables that are readable by all GIS software,special software platforms to manage the storage and retrieval of historical segments are not needed.In addition,this method simplifies spatio-temporal queries.  相似文献

The characteristics of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils have been among major concerns of geotechnical engineers due to its significant frequency of event and also its influential consequences on our surroundings from various environmental and engineering viewpoints. Heretofore, the effects of diverse kinds of hydrocarbon contaminants on majority of geotechnical properties of fine- and coarse-grained soils such as grain size, hydraulic conductivity, plasticity, compressibility, internal friction, cohesion, and shear strength have been investigated. However, there has not been a concentrated research study examining shear wave velocity (\({\text{V}}_{\text{s}}\)) of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils as an important geotechnical property of soil due to this fact that, in small/very small strain levels, the maximum shear modulus of soils (\({\text{G}}_{ \hbox{max} }\)) can be determined using shear wave velocity (\({\text{G}}_{ \hbox{max} } =\uprho{\text{V}}_{\text{s}}^{2}\)). This paper aims to investigate effects of hydrocarbon contamination on shear wave velocity of sandy soils by comparing shear wave velocities in identically prepared clean and contaminated samples. To this aim, an Iranian light crude oil, a standard type of silica sand (Ottawa sand), and a bender element apparatus were used to minutely measure shear wave velocity of clean and crude oil contaminated sand samples. Moreover, dry and quasi-moist tamping methods were employed in order to provide comparable clean and contaminated specimens (containing 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 wt% of crude oil), respectively. Firstly, a comprehensive bender element (BE) and resonant column tests were conducted on the identically prepared clean sand samples at various amounts of frequency (2–20 kHz) and under various confining pressure (50–500 kPa) to find the best methods of accurately determining shear wave travel time in BE tests. Thereafter, BE tests were conducted to examine shear wave velocity in contaminated specimens. Based on the results, it was found that there was a critical value for crude oil content with the maximum shear wave velocity so that shear wave velocity of 4 wt% contaminated sand (Vs-4 wt%) was about 1.2 times higher than clean one (Vs-clean), and contrastingly adding further crude oil up to 6 wt% made a significant reduction in value of shear wave velocity to some extent that Vs-6 wt% was slightly lower than Vs-clean (Vs-6 wt% = 0.95–0.97Vs-clean). Moreover, adding more contaminant (8–12 wt%) into sand had negligible influences on shear wave velocity. In this paper, the effects of crude oil contamination on sand microstructure were also evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Crack propagation process in pre-cracked rock like specimens has been studied experimentally and numerically considering three cracks in the middle part of each specimen. The rock-like specimens are specially prepared from Portland pozzolana cement, fine sands and water. These pre-cracked cylindrical specimens (each containing a single inclined crack in the neighborhood of two iso-path cracks) are experimentally tested under compressive loading. The same problems are numerically simulated by a modified displacement discontinuity method using higher order displacement discontinuity elements and higher order special crack tip elements for crack tip treatment to increase the accuracy of the Mode I and Mode II stress intensity factors obtained based on linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. The crack propagation and coalescence paths of the inclined crack are estimated by implementing a suitable iteration algorithm of incremental crack length extension in a direction predicted by using the maximum tangential stress criterion. The numerical and analytical crack extension analyses are compared which are in good agreement and show the validity, applicability and accuracy of the present work.  相似文献

The Astara Fault System(AFS) is located in the northwest Alborz, east of Talesh Mountain(TM) and west of the South Caspian Basin(SCB). The AFS is one of the basement rock faults in Iran that is heavily involved in seismotectonic activity of the Talesh region, and to which subsidence of the SCB is attributed. There is little information available concerning previous AFS seismic activities and its properties. In order to elucidate the seismic behavior and activities of the AFS, we conducted a research study on paleoseismology of the fault. Based on paleoseismic evidence, two scenarios could be taken into consideration, one of which has three and another has four seismic events with magnitudes Mw in the range of 6.7 to 7.2. Evidence of these seismic events is within sedimentary succession as they have occurred during the past 3 ka(this age is determined based on the deposition rate of the region). Six carbon samples were taken for C~(14) age determination tests, the results of which clearly demonstrated that the EvIV(scenario A) and EvⅢ(scenario B) had occurred before 27,444 cal BP, while other events occurred in the time period between 27,444 cal BP and 3 ka ago. If we consider the occurrence of three or four seismic events(based on the two scenarios) to be between 27,444 cal BP and 3 ka ago, the average recurrence interval is 7,119 ± 1,017, but evidence for these events has been removed. If we assume EvI to be the youngest event(in both scenarios), the minimum elapsed time is therefore 3 ka.  相似文献
