Changes in groundwater elevation may cause a change in the net normal stress and matric potential within the soil mass, which results in volume changes of unsaturated soil. This research investigated the relationship between the drawdown of groundwater and the characteristics of volumetric compressibility of unsaturated soil. Sand column experiments were designed and conducted to measure the volume changes of coarse and fine sands under different types of drainage conditions at fast and slow drainage rates. The finite element program FEMWATER was calibrated and used to simulate the distributions of stress, tension and moisture content within the sands. Finally, based on the changes of net normal stress and matric potential and the observed volume change of the sands, a least‐square method was applied to determine the volumetric consolidation parameters of the unsaturated soils. The solutions of constant‐head and constant‐flux tests are commonly used to predict the temporal or spatial drawdown distribution or to determine aquifer parameters. Theis and Thiem equations, for instance, are well‐known transient and steady‐state drawdown solutions, respectively, of the constant‐flux test. It is known that the Theis equation is not applicable to the case where the aquifer has a finite boundary or the pumping time tends to infinity. On the other hand, the Thiem equation does not apply to the case where the aquifer boundary is infinite. However, the issue of obtaining the Thiem equation from the transient drawdown solution has not previously been addressed. In this paper, the drawdown solutions for constant‐head and constant‐flux tests conducted in finite or infinite confined aquifers with or without consideration of the effect of the well radius are examined comprehensively. Mathematical verification and physical interpretation of the solutions to these two tests converging or not converging to the Thiem equation are presented. The result shows that there are some finite‐domain solutions for these two tests that can converge to the Thiem equation when the time becomes infinitely large. In addition, the time criteria to give a good approximation to the finite‐domain solution by the infinite‐domain solution and the Thiem equation are investigated and presented. This paper presents a new semi‐analytical solution for a slug test in a well partially penetrating a confined aquifer, accounting for the skin effect. This solution is developed based on the solution for a constant‐flux pumping test and a formula given by Peres and co‐workers in 1989. The solution agrees with that of Cooper and co‐workers and the KGS model when the well is fully penetrating. The present solution can be applied to simulate the temporal and spatial head distributions in both the skin and formation zones. It can also be used to demonstrate the influences of skin type or skin thickness on the well water level and to estimate the hydraulic parameters of the skin and formation zones using a least‐squares approach. The results of this study indicate that the determination of hydraulic conductivity using a conventional slug‐test data analysis that neglects the presence of a skin zone will give an incorrect result if the aquifer has a skin zone. The heliocentrifugal motion of coronal loop transients is likely driven largely by the buoyant force exerted by the ambient medium. In the outer corona where the solar wind is well formed, the buoyant force results mainly from the rapid outward decrease in the ambient pressure of the solar wind. The contribution from magnetic buoyancy is not so significant as in the vicinity of the solar surface. Therefore, the pertinent features of the loop transients in the outer corona are basically gasdynamical. As a conspicuous part of coronal expansion, the motion of the compressible masses in the transient loops is largely controlled by thermal forces. The translational motion of heliocentrifugal expansion is driven by the hydrodynamic buoyant force, and the lateral motion of peripheral expansion is driven by the pressure difference between the dense plasma of the ejecta and the tenuous plasma of the ambient medium.  相似文献

Electron content data recorded at Cold Bay, Alaska and Invercargill, New Zealand have been used to study the geomagnetic conjugate effects. The correlation on day-to-day variations at these two stations is found to be negative at extreme magnetic quiet and it then increases to positive values with magnetic activities. When disturbed magnetically, the correlation is + 0.73. Evidence is presented to show that, on the first day following the sudden commencement, the afternoon rise and the subsequent pre-sunset fall in electron content is controlled geomagnetically.  相似文献

A dynamical model of prominence loops is constructed on the basis of the theory of hydromagnetic buoyancy force. A prominence loop is regarded as a flux rope immersed in the solar atmosphere above a bipolar region of the photospheric magnetic field. The motion of a loop is partitioned into a translational motion, which accounts for the displacement of the centroidal axis of the loop, and an expansional motion, which accounts for the displacement of the periphery of the loop relative to the axis. The translational motion is driven by the hydromagnetic buoyancy force exerted by the surrounding medium of the solar atmosphere and the gravitational force exerted by the Sun. The expansional motion is driven by the pressure gradient that sustains the pressure difference between internal and external gas pressures and the self-induced Lorentz force that results from interactions among internal currents. The main constituent of the hydromagnetic buoyancy force on a prominence loop is the diamagnetic force exerted on the internal currents by the external currents that sustain the pre-existing magnetic field. By spatial transformation between magnetic and mechanical stresses, the diamagnetic force is manifested through a mechanical force acting at various mass elements of the prominence. For a prominence loop in equilibrium, the gravitational force is balanced by the hydromagnetic buoyancy force and the Lorentz force of helical magnetic field is balanced by a gradient force of gas pressure.  相似文献

The most pertinent effect of the currents in the coronal-interplanetary space is their alteration of the magnetic topology to form configurations of open field lines. The important currents seem to be those in the neighborhoods of the interfaces between closed and open field lines or between oppositely directed open field lines in the coronal helmet-streamer structures. Thus, the coronal-interplanetary space may be regarded as being partitioned by current-sheets into several piecewise current-free regions. These current sheets overlie the photospheric neutral lines, where the vertical component of the magnetic field reverses its polarity on the solar surface. But, their locations and strengths are determined by force balance between the magnetic field and the gas pressure in the coronal-interplanetary space. Since the pressure depends on the flow velocity of the solar wind and the solar wind channels along magnetic flux tubes, there is a strong magnetohydrodynamic coupling between the magnetic field and the solar wind. The sheetcurrent approach presented in this paper seems to be a reasonable way to account for this complicated interaction. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Niangziguan Spring complex is the largest karst spring in North China. We investigate the karst hydrological processes by using Morlet wavelet transform analysis and cross wavelet analysis based on monthly precipitation from 1958 to 2010 and spring discharge from 1958 to 2009. From Morlet wavelet transform coefficients of precipitation and the spring discharge in Niangziguan Springs Basin, we find that the precipitation and discharge are characterized by the multi‐scale features in the time domain, and the energy distribution of the signal is highly irregular across scales. Although precipitation eventually becomes spring discharge by infiltrating and propagating through karst formations, the signals are attenuated. The results also show that the precipitation of Niangziguan Springs Basin has the main periodic components of 1‐, 5‐, 12‐, and 17‐year periods with alternating wet–drought cycle. Similarly, the spring discharge of Niangziguan Springs has the main components of 17‐year periods, but the 1‐, 5‐, and 12‐year periodicity of precipitation are not reflected in spring discharge, which is filtered by the aquifers. The results of cross wavelet analysis reveal that the precipitation and spring discharge share the common periodicity of 17 years. This means that those signals with high energy and long timescales can penetrate through the aquifer and be reflected in spring discharge, whereas other signals are filtered and modified. Groundwater flow and the associated surface water flow are potential negative factors on underground tunnels. Early detection of environmental impacts on water resources is of significant importance to planning, design and construction of tunnel projects, as early detection can minimize accidents and project delays during construction. The groundwater modeling software package Groundwater Modeling System (GMS), which supports the groundwater numerical codes MODFLOW and FEMWATER, was utilized to determine the impact of tunneling excavation on the hydrogeological environment in a regional area around the tunnel and a local hot springs area, at the “Tseng-Wen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion Project”, in Taiwan. A hydrogeological conceptual model was first developed to simplify structures related to the site topography, geology and geological structure. The MODFLOW code was then applied to simulate groundwater flow pattern for the hydrogeological conceptual model in the tunnel area. The automated parameter estimation method was applied to calibrate groundwater level fluctuation and hydrogeological parameters in the region. Calibration of the model demonstrated that errors between simulated and monitored results are smaller than allowable errors. The study also observed that tunneling excavation caused groundwater to flow toward the tunnel. No obvious changes in the groundwater flow field due to tunnel construction were observed far away in the surrounding regions. Furthermore, the FEMWATER code for solving 3-D groundwater flow problems, in which hydrogeological characteristics are integrated into a geographic information system (GIS), is applied to evaluate the impact of tunnel construction on an adjacent hot spring. Simulation results indicated that the groundwater drawdown rate is less than the groundwater recharge rate, and the change to the groundwater table after tunnel construction was insignificant for the hot spring area. Finally, the groundwater flow obtained via the GMS indicated that the hydrogeological conceptual model can estimate the possible quantity of tunnel inflow and the impact of tunnel construction on the regional and local groundwater resources regime of the transbasin diversion project.  相似文献

Slug test data obtained from tests performed in an unconfined aquifer are commonly analyzed by graphical or numerical approaches to determine the aquifer parameters. This paper derives three fourth-degree polynomials to represent the relationship between Bouwer and Rice's coefficients and the ratio of the screen length to the radius of the gravel envelope. A numerical approach using the nonlinear least squares and Newton's method is used to determine hydraulic conductivity from the best fit of the slug test data. The method of nonlinear least squares minimizes the sum of the squares of the differences between the predicted and observed water levels inside the well. With the polynomials, the hydraulic conductivity can be obtained by simply solving the nonlinear least squares equation by Newton's method. A computer code, SLUGBR, was developed from the derived polynomials using the proposed numerical approach. The results of analyzing two slug test datasets show that SLUGBR can determine hydraulic conductivity with very good accuracy.  相似文献
