This paper examines the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of a granitic rock. The cylindrical sample of granite contained a sealed fluid-filled cavity which was subjected to a cycle of temperature changes on its outer surface. The temperature and fluid pressure changes in the fluid-filled cavity were measured. Since the measurement of fluid pressure and temperature in the sealed cavity is experimentally feasible, the technique is a common feature in thermo-hydro-mechanical experiments. However, it was observed that regardless of how precisely the cavity was filled with de-aired water, air bubbles can still exist in the cavity and influence the fluid pressure changes. A novel technique is suggested for taking into account the influence of the volume of trapped air and eliminating its effect in the estimation of permeability. The experiment was computationally modelled using the finite element code COMSOL Multiphysics? and the experimental results were compared with the computational estimates. 相似文献

Conventional modelling of transport problems for porous media usually assumes that the Darcy flow velocities are steady. In certain practical situations, the flow velocity can exhibit time‐dependency, either due to the transient character of the flow process or time dependency in the boundary conditions associated with potential flow. In this paper, we consider certain one‐ and three‐dimensional problems of the advective transport of a chemical species in a fluid‐saturated porous region. In particular, the advective flow velocity is governed by the piezo‐conduction equation that takes into account the compressibilities of the pore fluid and the porous skeleton. Time‐ and/or mesh‐refining adaptive schemes used in the computational modelling are developed on the basis of a Fourier analysis, which can lead to accurate and optimal solutions for the advective transport problem with time‐ and space‐dependent advective flow velocity distributions. In this paper we examine the mechanics of contact between a flexible elastic diaphragm and an isotropic elastic halfspace region where contact is established through the application of a normal stress. It is shown that a convenient solution for the maximum displacement and maximum flexural moment in the flexible diaphragm can be obtained by employing a variational technique. The paper presents the results of a series laboratory experiments which were conducted to study the heat-induced moisture movement in a bentonitic clay buffer region. In the experimental investigations, hygro-thermal phenomena are induced by a cylindrical heater which is placed within the compacted buffer material located in a borehole centrally situated in a granite block. Scoping calculations were performed in order to assess the influence of radiogenic heat on the performance of the rock mass around a nuclear fuel waste repository. The full coupling between the thermal, mechanical and hydrological processes involved was considered by using the finite element code, FRACON, developed through an extension of Biot's classical theory of soil consolidation. By considering the full T---H---M coupling, several important safety features, which would otherwise be omitted in uncoupled analyses, were detected in the present study. In particular, it was shown that the heat-induced pore pressure increase around the repository has the potential to significantly increase the rate of groundwater flow, and affect the structural integrity of the rock mass. 相似文献

The evolution of permeability hysterisis in Indiana Limestone during application of isotropic confining pressures up to 60 MPa was measured by conducting one-dimensional constant flow rate tests. These tests were carried out either during monotonic application of the confining pressure or during loading-partial unloading cycles. Irreversible permeability changes occurred during both monotonic and repeated incremental compression of the limestone. Mathematical relationships are developed for describing the evolution of path-dependent permeability during isotropic compression. 相似文献
