The Denali fault system forms an arc, convex to the north, across southern Alaska. In the central Alaska Range, the system consists of a northern Hines Creek strand and a southern McKinley strand, up to 30 km apart. The Hines Creek fault may preserve a record of the early history of the fault system. Strong contrasts between juxtaposed lower Paleozoic rocks appear to require large dextral strike-slip or a combination of dipslip and strike-slip displacements along this fault. Thus the fault system may mark a reactivated suture zone between continental rocks to the north and a late Paleozoic island arc to the south, as suggested by Richter and Jones (1973). Major movements on the Hines Creek fault ceased by the Late Cretaceous, but local dip-slip movements continued into the Cenozoic.The McKinley fault is an active dextral strike-slip fault with a mean Holocene displacement rate of 1–2 cm/y. Post-Late Cretaceous dextral offset on this fault is probably at least 30 km and possibly as great as 400 km. Patterns of early Tertiary folding and reverse faulting indicate that the McKinley fault was active at that time and suggest that this fault developed shortly after strike-slip activity ceased on the Hines Creek fault. Oligocene — middle Miocene tectonic stability and late Miocene—Pliocene uplift of crustal blocks may reflect periods of quiescence and activity, on the McKinley fault.The two strands of the Denali fault divide the central Alaska Range into northern, central, and southern terranes. During the Paleozoic—Mesozoic there is evidence for at least two episodes of compressive deformation in the northern terrane, four in the central terrane, and two in the southern. During each, the axis of maximum compressive strain was subhorizontal and about north—south. This pattern suggests a Paleozoic and Mesozoic setting dominated by plate convergence, despite the possible large pre-Late Cretaceous lateral movement on the Hines Creek fault.The Cenozoic pattern of faulting and folding appears compatible with a plate tectonic model of (1) rapid northward movement of the Pacific plate relative to Alaska during the early Tertiary; (2) slow northwestward movement of the Pacific plate during the Oligicene and (3) rapid northwestward movement of the Pacific plate from the end of the Oligocene to the present.  相似文献

The Hugoton-Panhandle giant gas field, located across SW Kansas and the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles in the USA, is the case type example of high nitrogen concentrations in a natural gas being linked with high helium concentrations. We collected 31 samples from producing wells in a north-south traverse of the 350-km-long field. The samples reflect the previously observed north-south change in 4He/N2, with values changing from 0.020 to 0.049 respectively. 3He/4He, 21Ne/22Ne, and 40Ar/36Ar vary between 0.14-0.25 Ra, 0.0373-0.0508, and 818-1156 respectively, and are caused by quantifiable contributions from mantle, crustal, and atmosphere-derived sources. The atmosphere-derived 20Ne/36Ar ratios are indistinguishable from groundwater values. The crustal 4He/21Ne* and 4He/40Ar* ratios show a 60% excess of 4He compared to predicted production ratios in the crust and are typical of noble gases released from the shallow crust. The mantle 3He/N2 and groundwater-recharge 36Ar/N2 ratios enable us to rule out significant magmatic or atmosphere contributions to the gas field N2, which is dominantly crustal in origin.Correlated 20Ne/N2 and 4He/N2 shows mixing between two distinct crustal N2 components. One N2 component (N2*) is associated with the crustal 4He and groundwater-derived 20Ne, and the other with no resolvable noble gas contribution. Measured δ15NN2 values vary from +2.7‰ to +9.4‰. The N2* and non-He-associated N2 endmembers are inferred to have δ15NN2 = −3‰ and +13‰ and contribute from between 25-60% and 75-40% of the nitrogen respectively. The non-He-associated nitrogen is probably derived from relatively mature organic matter in the sedimentary column. The δ15NN2* value is not compatible with a crystalline or high-grade metamorphic source and, similar to the 4He, is inferred to be from a shallow or low metamorphic-grade source rock. 4He mass balance requires a regional crustal source, its association with significant magmatic 3He pointing to a tectonically active source to the west of the Hugoton system. The volume of groundwater required to source the 20Ne in the gas field demonstrates the viability of the groundwater system in providing the collection, transport, and focusing mechanism for the 4He and N2*. The N2*/20Ne ratio shows that the N2* transport must be in the aqueous phase, and that the degassing mechanism is probably contact between the regional groundwater system and the preexisting reservoir hydrocarbon gas phase.  相似文献

13 lava flows of known age (ages from 14C dating), which have been erupted in the last 30 000 years, have been studied to determine the palaeosecular variation of the geomagnetic field in Central Mexico. Samples were taken from two different monogenetic volcanic fields: the Michoacan-Guanajuato volcanic field (six sites) and the Chichinautzin Formation (seven sites), both part of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt. The lavas were studied in detail using rock magnetic methods (magnetic susceptibility at room temperature, low-temperature susceptibility behaviour, hysteresis loops, Curie temperatures), combined with reflected light microscopy, in order to deduce their magnetic mineralogy and the domain states of the magnetic minerals. The magnetic carriers are titanomagnetites, which show differing degrees of high-temperature deuteric oxidation, and seem to be predominantly pseudo-single domain (PSD), though in many cases are probably a mixture of domain states. Mean palaeomagnetic directions and palaeointensity values using Shaw and Thellier techniques were obtained using several specimens from each flow. Our data seem to indicate a sharp easterly swing in declination about 5000 years ago, which is also observed in lake sediments from Central Mexico. The calculated values of the virtual dipole moment (VDM) range from 3.1 to 14.9 × 1022 A m2. Our data indicate that the virtual dipole moment seems to have increased gradually in magnitude over the last 30 kyr, with a peak at about 9000 years BP. These are features that have been observed in other parts of the globe and are probably caused by variations in the dipole part of the geomagnetic field.  相似文献

To understand reaction pathways and isotope systematics during mineral-catalyzed abiotic synthesis of hydrocarbons under hydrothermal conditions, experiments involving magnetite and CO2 and H2-bearing aqueous fluids were conducted at 400 °C and 500 bars. A robust technique for sample storage and transfer from experimental apparatus to stable isotope mass spectrometer provides a methodology for integration of both carbon and hydrogen isotope characterization of reactants and products generated during abiogenic synthesis experiments. Experiments were performed with and without pretreatment of magnetite to remove background carbon associated with the mineral catalyst. Prior to experiments, the abundance and carbon isotope composition of all carbon-bearing components were determined. Time-series samples of the fluid from all experiments indicated significant concentrations of dissolved CO and C1-C3 hydrocarbons and relatively large changes in dissolved CO2 and H2 concentrations, consistent with formation of additional hydrocarbon components beyond C3. The existence of relatively high dissolved alkanes in the experiment involving non-pretreated magnetite in particular, suggests a complex catalytic process, likely involving reinforcing effects of mineral-derived carbon with newly synthesized hydrocarbons at the magnetite surface. Similar reactions may be important mechanisms for carbon reduction in chemically complex natural hydrothermal systems. In spite of evidence supporting abiotic hydrocarbon formation in all experiments, an “isotopic reversal” trend was not observed for 13C values of dissolved alkanes with increasing carbon number. This may relate to the specific mechanism of carbon reduction and hydrocarbon chain growth under hydrothermal conditions at elevated temperatures and pressures. Over time, significant 13C depletion in CH4 suggests either depolymerization reactions occurring in addition to synthesis, or reactions between the C1-C3 hydrocarbons and carbon species absorbed on mineral surfaces and in solution.  相似文献

通过室内摄食实验,研究了栉孔扇贝(Chlamys farreri)对麻痹性贝毒(PSP)产毒藻的敏感性及其累积和排出毒素的特征.有毒微小亚历山大藻(Alexandrium minutum)在短时间内可对栉孔扇贝的摄食有一定的抑制作用,且投喂毒藻的浓度越大,对摄食作用的抑制越明显.栉孔扇贝对PSP贝毒的累积能力很强,实验中,48 h后内脏累积毒素就高达5000μg STXeq100g-1,但其毒素排出速率较慢,在24d解毒阶段后内脏中的毒素还没有下降至国际贝毒食用安全标准水平的80μg STXeq 100g-1.各毒素组成比在整个累积与排除过程中有较大变化,GTX1,GTX4在累积阶段比例下降,同时GTX2,GTX3比例上升;内脏中GTX2:GTX3的比值逐渐增加.毒藻中PSP贝毒毒素组成和贝体中PSP贝毒毒素组成之间的主要差别是GTX4含量的减少和GTX1含量的升高;而扇贝粪便中的毒素组成却与对数生长期的毒藻极为接近.  相似文献

2 and δ13C in soil gas were measured at three active subduction-related stratovolcanoes (Arenal and Poás, Costa Rica; Galeras, Colombia). In general, Rn, CO2 and δ13C values are higher on the lower flanks of the volcanoes, except near fumaroles in the active craters. The upper flanks of these volcanoes have low Rn concentrations and light δ13C values. These observations suggest that diffuse degassing of magmatic gas on the upper flanks of these volcanoes is negligible and that more magmatic degassing occurs on the lower flanks where major faults and greater fracturing in the older lavas can channel magmatic gases to the surface. These results are in contrast to findings for Mount Etna where a broad halo of magmatic CO2 has been postulated to exist over much of the edifice. Differences in radon levels among the three volcanoes studied here may result from differences in age, the degree of fracturing and faulting, regional structures or the level of hydrothermal activity. Volcanoes, such as those studied here, act as plugs in the continental crust, focusing magmatic degassing towards crater fumaroles, faults and the fractured lower flanks. The equilibrium response of atmospheric circulation to the direct radiative effects of natural or anthropogenic aerosols is investigated using the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM3) coupled to two different ocean boundary conditions: prescribed climatological sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and a slab ocean model. Anthropogenic and natural aerosols significantly affect the circulation but in nearly opposite ways, because anthropogenic aerosols tend to have a net local warming effect and natural aerosols a net cooling. Aerosol forcings shift the Intertropical Convergence Zone and alter the strength of the Hadley circulation as found in previous studies, but also affect the Hadley cell width. These effects are due to meridional gradients in warming caused by heterogeneous net heating, and are stronger with interactive SST. Aerosols also drive model responses at high latitudes, including polar near-surface warming by anthropogenic aerosols in summer and an Arctic Oscillation (AO)-type responses in winter: anthropogenic aerosols strengthen wintertime zonal wind near 60°N, weaken it near 30°N, warm the troposphere, cool the stratosphere, and reduce Arctic surface pressure, while natural aerosols produce nearly opposite changes. These responses are shown to be due to modulation of stratospheric wave-driving consistent with meridional forcing gradients in midlatitudes. They are more pronounced when SST is fixed, apparently because the contrast in land-ocean heating drives a predominantly wavenumber-2 response in the northern hemisphere which is more efficient in reaching the stratosphere, showing that zonal heating variations also affect this particular response. The results suggest that recent shifts from reflecting to absorbing aerosol types probably contributed to the observed decadal variations in tropical width and AO, although studies with more realistic temporal variations in forcing would be needed to quantify this contribution.  相似文献
