Landscape curvature evolves in response to physical, chemical, and biological influences that cannot yet be quantified in models. Nonetheless, the simplest models predict the existence of equilibrium hillslope profiles. Here, we develop a model describing steady‐state regolith production caused by mineral dissolution on hillslopes which have attained an equilibrium parabolic profile. When the hillslope lowers at a constant rate, the rate of chemical weathering is highest at the ridgetop where curvature is highest and the ridge develops the thickest regolith. This result derives from inclusion of all the terms in the mathematical definition of curvature. Including these terms shows that the curvature of a parabolic hillslope profile varies with distance from the ridge. The hillslope model (meter‐scale) is similar to models of weathering rind formation (centimeter‐scale) where curvature‐driven solute transport causes development of the thickest rinds at highly curved clast corners. At the clast scale, models fit observations. Here, we similarly explore model predictions of the effect of curvature at the hillslope scale. The hillslope model shows that when erosion rates are small and vertical porefluid infiltration is moderate, the hill weathers at both ridge and valley in the erosive transport‐limited regime. For this regime, the reacting mineral is weathered away before it reaches the land surface: in other words, the model predicts completely developed element‐depth profiles at both ridge and valley. In contrast, when the erosion rate increases or porefluid velocity decreases, denudation occurs in the weathering‐limited regime. In this regime, the reacting mineral does not weather away before it reaches the land surface and simulations predict incompletely developed profiles at both ridge and valley. These predictions are broadly consistent with observations of completely developed element‐depth profiles along hillslopes denuding under erosive transport‐limitation but incompletely developed profiles along hillslopes denuding under weathering limitation in some field settings. Environmental changes such as ocean warming or sea‐level rise have a profound impact on shallow‐water coastal environments. Benthic foraminifera have long been successfully used as indicators for ecologic responses. The propagule method is a useful tool to evaluate the reactions of entire assemblages of foraminifera when exposed to different environmental conditions. Here we present results from growth experiments of foraminiferal assemblages from three sites in coastal Georgia and Florida (USA) under different temperatures (18, 24 and 30 °C) and salinities (15 and 35). Results show that assemblages grown at the higher temperatures had greater abundances of foraminifera, whereas salinity was the primary factor in shaping the composition of the experimentally grown assemblages from the three sites. We also show that experimentally grown assemblages contain high numbers of ‘exotic’ species that result from successful propagule recruitment from outside of the original environments (e.g. the open shelf). Overall, opportunistic and previously termed ‘pioneer species’ proved to be the most successful constituents of the experimental assemblages, showing that reactions of foraminiferal assemblages to environmental changes can appear remarkably quickly (e.g. in the course of several weeks). Our observations on the faunal reactions to different temperatures and salinities indicate that ongoing environmental alterations of coastal areas will likely result in significant changes in the shallow‐water foraminiferal assemblages of the coasts of Georgia and Florida. As such, our study provides general insights into the ecologic effects of current climate change.  相似文献

Tufa-depositing springs in the southern Driftless Area of Wisconsin, USA, are used to inform the response of shallow and local groundwater flow systems to changes in climate over the last 3,000 years. The springs emanate from a shallow, unconfined, sedimentary bedrock aquifer and at stratigraphic positions similar to a shallow, perched aquifer that was identified in the eastern Driftless Area. The perched aquifer was shown to be stable under current climate conditions and over decadal time scales. This study provides further evidence of the significance of the stratigraphic interval in controlling shallow groundwater flow patterns in the region and in the stability of shallow and local groundwater flow systems over thousands of years. The tufa carbonates in three cores collected from the mounds adjacent to the springs show variations in stable isotope (δ13C, δ18O) and elemental (Mg/Ca) values that agree with well-established paleoclimate records for the region, suggesting that the springs were active and depositing tufa in the past, during climate conditions that were similar to the present and during conditions that were drier than the present.  相似文献

We present the results of laboratory experiments to study the sediment transport and erosional capacity of water at current martian temperature and pressure. We have performed laboratory simulation experiments in which a stream of water flowed over test beds at low temperature (∼−20 °C) and low pressure (∼7 mbar). The slope angle was 14° and three sediment types were tested. We compared the erosive ability, runout and resulting morphologies to experiments performed at ambient terrestrial temperature (∼20 °C) and pressure (∼1000 mbar), and also to experiments performed under low pressure only. We observed that, as expected, water is unstable in the liquid phase at low temperature and low pressure, with boiling and freezing in competition. Despite this, our results show that water at low temperature and low pressure has an equivalent and sometimes greater erosion rate than at terrestrial temperature and pressure. Water flows faster over the sediment body under low temperature and low pressure conditions because the formation of ice below the liquid-sediment contact inhibits infiltration. Flow speed and therefore runout distance are increased. Experiments at low pressure but Earth-ambient temperature suggest that flow speeds are faster under these conditions than under Earth-ambient pressure and temperature. We hypothesise that this is due to gas bubbles, created by the boiling of the water under low atmospheric pressure, impeding liquid infiltration. We have found that both basal freezing and low pressure increase the flow propagation speed - effects not included in current models of fluvial activity on Mars. Any future modelling of water flows on Mars should consider this extra mobility and incorporate the large reduction in fluid loss through infiltration into the substrate.  相似文献

During the International Geophysical Year (IGY, 1957/1958) Dunsink Observatory near Dublin in Ireland was a World Data Centre for Solar Activity. In this circumstance, Hα Lyot Heliograph records secured on a daily basis between 07:00 – 14:00 UT at the Cape of Good Hope (then an integral link in a network of similar instruments contributing during the IGY to global monitoring of solar chromospheric activity) were routinely sent to Dunsink for analysis and dissemination. The investigations carried out at Dunsink on these data resulted, inter alia, in the discovery of the Flare Nimbus phenomenon. The nimbus comprises a dark expanding halo seen in the plage regions around major flares at, or within a few minutes of, the time of flare maximum intensity in Hα light. It reaches its greatest extent about 30 minutes after flare maximum. Its maximum dimensions (estimated visually) lie in the range 2 – 4×105 km and its duration ranges from ∼ 1 – 2 hours. Within the nimbus the striation pattern is either completely destroyed or loses its pre-flare configuration. An account of this phenomenon and its interpretation appeared primarily, although not exclusively, in the locally produced Dunsink Observatory Publications which are not now easily accessible to the world community of solar researchers. Also, at around the time when the nimbus was first identified and recorded in Lyot Heliograph data at several observatories, techniques in solar physics shifted towards high resolution narrow field observations. Under these conditions no further examples of the nimbus were recorded and the subject has remained dormant over several decades. The present paper again places the scientific results obtained with regard to the nimbus in the public domain, together with an account of the evolution within the scientific community of an explanation of this phenomenon. It is suggested here for the first time, in the light of present day data concerning coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and coronal dimming, that the nimbus provides a signature of CME-related reorganization of the magnetic field in the chromosphere (such that the transverse magnetic field component decreases and transforms into the line of sight component as the vector field stretches out). Coronal dimming provides a complementary signature of CME-related mass depletion in the corona.  相似文献

The Diffuse X-rays from the Local galaxy (DXL) mission is an approved sounding rocket project with a first launch scheduled around December 2012. Its goal is to identify and separate the X-ray emission generated by solar wind charge exchange from that of the local hot bubble to improve our understanding of both. With 1,000 cm2 proportional counters and grasp of about 10 cm2 sr both in the 1/4 and 3/4 keV bands, DXL will achieve in a 5-min flight what cannot be achieved by current and future X-ray satellites.  相似文献

Recent studies of chemical weathering of andesitic-dacitic material on high-standing islands (HSIs) have shown these terrains have some of the highest observed rates of chemical weathering and associated CO2 consumption yet reported. However, the paucity of stream gauge data in many of these terrains has limited determination of chemical weathering product fluxes. In July 2006 and March 2008, stream water samples were collected and manual stream gauging was performed in watersheds throughout the volcanic island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. Distinct wet and dry season solute concentrations reveal the importance of seasonal variations on the weathering signal. A cluster analysis of the stream geochemical data shows the importance of parent material age on the overall delivery of solutes. Observed Ca:Na, HCO3:Na and Mg:Na ratios suggest crystallinity of the parent material may also play an important role in determining weathering fluxes. From total dissolved solids concentrations and mean annual discharge calculations we calculate chemical weathering yields of (6-106 t km−2 a−1), which are similar to those previously determined for basalt terrains. Silicate fluxes (3.1-55.4 t km−2 a−1) and associated CO2 consumption (190-1575 × 103 mol km−2 a−1) determined from our study are among the highest determined to date. The calculated chemical fluxes from our study confirm the weathering potential of andesitic-dacitic terrains and that additional studies of these terrains are warranted.  相似文献
