Nature of the crust in Maine,USA: evidence from the Sebago batholith   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
 Neodymium and lead isotope and elemental data are presented for the Sebago batholith (293±2 Ma), the largest exposed granite in New England. The batholith is lithologically homogeneous, yet internally heterogeneous with respect to rare earth elements (REE) and Nd isotopic composition. Two-mica granites in the southern/central portion of the batholith (group 1) are characterized by REE patterns with uniform shapes [CeN/YbN (chondrite normalized) = 9.4–19 and Eu/Eu* (Eu anomaly) = 0.27–0.42] and ɛ Nd(t) = −3.1 to −2.1. Peripheral two-mica granites (group 2), spatially associated with stromatic and schlieric migmatites, have a wider range of total REE contents and patterns with variable shapes (CeN/YbN = 6.1–67, Eu/Eu* = 0.20–0.46) and ɛ Nd(t) = −5.6 to −2.8. The heterogeneous REE character of the group 2 granites records the effects of magmatic differentiation that involved monazite. Coarse-grained leucogranites and aplites have kinked REE patterns and low total REE, but have Nd isotope systematics similar to group 2 granites with ɛ Nd(t) = −5.5 to −4.7. Rare biotite granites have steep REE patterns (CeN/YbN = 51–61, Eu/Eu* = 0.32–0.84) and ɛ Nd(t) = −4.6 to −3.8. The two-mica granites have a restricted range in initial Pb isotopic composition (206Pb/204Pb = 18.41–18.75; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.60–15.68; 208Pb/204Pb = 38.21–38.55), requiring and old, high U/Pb (but not Th/U) source component. The Nd isotope data are consistent with magma derivation from two sources: Avalon-like crust (ɛ Nd>−3), and Central Maine Belt metasedimentary rocks (ɛ Nd<−4), without material input from the mantle. The variations in isotope systematics and REE patterns are inconsistent with models of disequilibrium melting which involved monazite. Received: 8 December 1995 / Accepted: 29 April 1996  相似文献

Strontium and Nd isotopic compositions and trace element abundances were determined for Cretaceous to late Cenozoic igneous rocks from the Japan Sea side of Southwest Japan in order to investigate the effect of the opening of the Japan Sea on igneous activity. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios for both high and low silica rocks decrease with decreasing age since the middle Miocene, when the opening occurred. Similarly, 143Nd/144Nd values for these rocks increase with decreasing age, and are negatively correlated with 87Sr/86Sr ratios. A two-component mixing process can best account for these isotopic and chemical characteristics. One end-member is likely the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and its derivative mafic to intermediate materials which had ɛNd values of around +3. The other endmember consists of mafic to intermediate rocks with low ɛNd values (e.g., −8), probably located in the lower crust. The mantle upwelling associated with the opening of the Japan Sea did not supply typical MORB or MORB-source materials to the crust, but did provide the heat that caused the melting of lithospheric mantle and lower crust. Liquid metal-liquid silicate partitioning of Fe, Ni, Co, P, Ge, W and Mo among a carbon-saturated metal and a variety of silicate melts (magnesian-tholeiitic-siliceous-aluminous-aluminosiliceous basalts) depends modestly to strongly upon silicate melt structure and composition. Low valency siderophile elements, Fe, Ni and Co, show a modest influence of silicate melt composition on partitioning. Germanium shows a moderate but consistent preference for the depolymerized magnesian melt. High valency siderophile elements, P, Mo, and W, show more than an order of magnitude decrease in metal-silicate partition coefficients as the silicate melt becomes more depolymerized. Detailed inspection of our and other published W data shows that polymerization state, temperature and pressure are more important controls on W partitioning than oxidation state. For this to be true for a high and variable valence element implies a secondary role in general for oxidation state, even though some role must be present. Equilibrium core segregation through a magma ocean of ‘ultrabasic’ composition can provide a resolution to the ‘excess’ abundances of Ge, P, W and Mo in the mantle, but the mantle composition alone cannot explain the excess abundances of nickel and cobalt in chondritic proportions.  相似文献

Technetium isotopes 97Tc, 98Tc and 99Tc decay to 97Mo, 98Ru and 99Ru, with half-lives of 2.6 My, 4.1 My, and 0.21 My respectively. If there were early solar system processes that resulted in significant fractionation of Tc from the daughter elements, decay of extant Tc could have led to the creation of Mo and Ru isotopic heterogeneities. To assess the potential of metallic core crystallization to fractionate these elements, we examine the partitioning behavior of Tc relative to Re, Mo and Ru in the Fe-Ni-S system between solid metal and liquid metal alloy. The experimental evidence shows that Tc behaves more like the modestly compatible siderophile element Ru than the more highly compatible siderophile element Re, and that Tc is substantially more compatible than Mo. We also demonstrate a pressure effect in the partitioning of Mo during the crystallization of Fe-Ni-S melts. For a sulfur concentration in the liquid fraction of the core of 10 wt% (16.3 at%), the Jones and Malvin (1990) parameter is −ln(1-2 × 1.09 × 0.163) ≅ 0.44, which yields: D(Re) ≅ 4.1; D(Ru) ≅ 2.3; D(Tc) ≅ 1.7; D(Mo)Lo-P ≅ 1.0;.and D(Mo)Hi-P ≅ 0.5. Our results suggest that detectable Tc-induced isotopic anomalies (≥0.1 ε unit) in Ru and Mo could only be produced by unrealistically extreme degrees of crystallization of metal during asteroidal core fractionation, regardless of the time scales and initial Tc abundances involved.  相似文献

A series of three‐dimensional models has been constructed for the structure of the crust and upper mantle over a large region spanning the NE Atlantic passive margin. These incorporate isostatic and flexural principles, together with gravity modelling and integration with seismic interpretations. An initial isostatic model was based on known bathymetric/topographic variations, an estimate of the thickness and density of the sedimentary cover, and upper mantle densities based on thermal modelling. The thickness of the crystalline crust in this model was adjusted to equalise the load at a compensation depth lying below the zone of lateral mantle density variations. Flexural backstripping was used to derive alternative models which tested the effect of varying the strength of the lithosphere during sediment loading. The models were analysed by comparing calculated and observed gravity fields and by calibrating the predicted geometries against independent (primarily seismic) evidence. Further models were generated in which the thickness of the sedimentary layer and the crystalline crust were modified in order to improve the fit to observed gravity anomalies. The potential effects of igneous underplating and variable upper mantle depletion were explored by a series of sensitivity trials. The results provide a new regional lithospheric framework for the margin and a means of setting more detailed, local investigations in their regional context. The flexural modelling suggests lateral variations in the strength of the lithosphere, with much of the margin being relatively weak but areas such as the Porcupine Basin and parts of the Rockall Basin having greater strength. Observed differences between the model Moho and seismic Moho along the continental margin can be interpreted in terms of underplating. A Moho discrepancy to the northwest of Scotland is ascribed to uplift caused by a region of upper mantle with anomalously low density, which may be associated with depletion or with a temperature anomaly.  相似文献

This paper presents a critical and reflexive account of using Q methodology in human geography. Q methodology has a long pedigree in psychological, political and sociological research, but is only recently beginning to be used by human geographers. We discuss, in particular, the parts of the process(es) of Q methodology that are often glossed over in the literature, through reflecting on our learning in using Q within a project examining the use and production of environmental science by NGOs. We conclude that Q may be a useful supplement to existing methods in human geography, as long as it is used creatively and reflexively and with full awareness of its interpretative dimensions.  相似文献

The fractionation of lithium isotopes among quartz, muscovite, and a chloride-bearing aqueous fluid has been investigated experimentally at 400°-500°C and 50-100 MPa. Experiments were performed for 15-60 days in cold seal vessels with natural mineral specimens. Lithium was introduced primarily through the fluid, which also contained KCl and HCl. In most runs, the fluid was prepared with the L-SVEC standard (δ7Li = 0) and was 1 M in total chloride with K/Li/H = 100/10/1. In two experiments, a 6Li spike was employed. The experiments demonstrate that quartz and muscovite are susceptible to pronounced, rapid shifts in Li isotopic composition by diffusion through interaction with a Li-bearing fluid, particularly at 500°C. At 500°C, fractionation factors were determined to be Δquartz-aqueous ≅ +8 to + 12‰ and Δmuscovite-aqueous ≅ +18 to + 20‰. An intermineral fractionation factor is given by Δmuscovite-quartz ≈ +9‰. At 400°C, the results suggest Δquartz-aqueous ≈ +4 to + 6‰. The study provides evidence of systematic fractionation in lithium isotopes at the temperatures of some magmatic processes, such as those associated with porphyry-type ore systems and pegmatites.  相似文献

We review studies of the Holocene and Late Pleistocene stratigraphy of eastern Iran to infer past changes in the environment within this presently arid region. We build a scenario of widespread, and presumably climatically driven, evolution of the landscape through the Holocene. Six sites, covering a 10° range in latitude, indicate a regional abandonment of alluvial fan surfaces at ~10 ± 3 ka, with the younger (~9 ka) end of this age range supported by several of the best-constrained studies. Incision of rivers into the fan surfaces has occurred in discrete stages in the early to mid-Holocene (~9–7 ka) leading to the formation of flights of river terraces. Detailed records of lakebed deposition in the presently arid interior of Iran are rare, though the available data indicate lake highstand conditions at <7.8 ka at South Golbaf in SE Iran and at < 8.7 ± 1.1 ka at the Nimbluk plain in NE Iran. The major periods of Holocene landscape development hence correlate with a period of time where water was more abundant than at present, with incision of rivers into thick alluvial deposits possibly occurring due to a combination of decreased sediment supply and high levels of precipitation, and with the formation of inset river terraces possibly responding to century-scale fluctuations in precipitation. No major geomorphic changes are identified within the later part of the Holocene, from which we infer that increased aridity has slowed evolution of the landscape. A decrease in precipitation in the mid-Holocene may have had a detrimental effect on bronze age societies in eastern Iran as has been inferred elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean region. The pre-Holocene environmental changes in eastern Iran are less well constrained, though there are suggestions of alluvial fan abandonment at 40–60 ka, at ~80 ka, and at ~120 ka.  相似文献
