Chromites separated from the upper mantle or lower crustal portions of 18 ophiolites ranging in age from 900 Ma to 50 Ma are examined for Re-Os isotopic systematics. The ophiolites include both MORB and back arc types, although most are from supra-subduction zone (SSZ) settings. The chromites are robust indicators of the initial Os isotopic compositions of the systems sampled. There is very limited range in calculated initial γOs values, with the entire group averaging +1.31. Least squares linear regression of the age of chromite formation (in Ga) versus initial 187Os/188Os of a filtered suite yields a slope of −0.0058±0.0019 (2σ) and a present day intercept of 0.12809±0.00085 (2σ), equivalent to a γOs value of +0.9±0.6. Of the suite of 51 samples analyzed, 68% lie within ±1% of this evolution trajectory.Although most of the samples formed in SSZ environments, there is little evidence to suggest modification of the mantle Os isotopic composition via radiogenic melts or fluids derived from subducting slabs. The ophiolite data are interpreted as representative of the convecting upper mantle and suggest that the present isotopic composition of the convecting upper mantle averages approximately 1.2% less radiogenic than the estimated minimum composition of the primitive upper mantle of 0.1296±8 (Meisel et al., 2001). The most likely explanation for the difference is the formation, subduction and isolation of some portion of the mafic oceanic crust. Using models based on the assumption that the convecting upper mantle comprises 50% of the total mass of the mantle, and that the average isolation period for subducted oceanic crust is 1.5 to 2.0 Ga, it is estimated that approximately 2 to 3% of the total mass of the mantle is composed of subducted mafic oceanic crust that remains isolated from the convecting upper mantle. Because the isotopic compositions of the DMM and PUM overlap within uncertainties, however, the results do not require any isolated slab component. 相似文献

We have evaluated published gravity-height ((g/(h) data on Campi Flegrei, Kilauea, Askja and Krafla, in order to discriminate between subsurface processes during caldera subsidence. With respect to end member gravity-height correlations, such as the free air gradient (FAG) and the Bouguer corrected free air (BCFAG), (g/(h gradients must be interpreted in terms of subsurface mass redistribution, density changes or some combination of these. (g/(h gradients during subsidence plot (1) along or below the BCFAG, (2) between the BCFAG and the FAG or (3) along or above the FAG. We have evaluated each of these three regions in terms of subsurface processes during volcano subsidence. We have interpreted (g/(h gradients as possible indicators of precursors of volcanic activity and propose that gravity-height surveys may help to detect precursors of caldera collapse caused by magma drainage. In this context, the 1875 eruption of Askja in Iceland has been re-interpreted in terms of the beginning of the eruptive episode being induced by roof collapse of an evacuating magma chamber. Based on other examples of recent volcanic roof collapses, we evaluate the contribution of gravity-height surveys in assessing volcanic risks during caldera subsidence. Caldera-forming eruptions are environmentally and economically the most devastating volcanic events. Inflation is usually considered to be an important precursor to activity. Precambrian Laurentia and Mesozoic Gondwana both rifted along geometric patterns that closely approximate truncated-icosahedral tessellations of the lithosphere. These large-scale, quasi-hexagonal rift patterns manifest a least-work configuration. For both Laurentia and Gondwana, continental rifting coincided with drift stagnation, and may have been driven by lithospheric extension above an insulated and thermally expanded mantle. Anorogenic magmatism, including flood basalts, dike swarms, anorthosite massifs and granite-rhyolite provinces, originated along the Laurentian and Gondwanan rift tessellations. Long-lived volcanic regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, sometimes called hotspots, originated near triple junctions of the Gondwanan tessellation as the supercontinent broke apart. We suggest that some anorogenic magmatism results from decompression melting of asthenosphere beneath opening fractures, rather than from random impingement of hypothetical deep-mantle plumes. 相似文献

Asteroid 2008 TC3 was characterized in a unique manner prior to impacting Earth's atmosphere, making its October 7, 2008, impact a suitable field test for or validating the application of high‐fidelity re‐entry modeling to asteroid entry. The accurate modeling of the behavior of 2008 TC3 during its entry in Earth's atmosphere requires detailed information about the thermophysical properties of the asteroid's meteoritic materials at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to the point of ablation (T ~ 1400 K). Here, we present measurements of the thermophysical properties up to these temperatures (in a 1 atm. pressure of argon) for two samples of the Almahata Sitta meteorites from asteroid 2008 TC3: a thick flat‐faced ureilite suitably shaped for emissivity measurements and a thin flat‐faced EL6 enstatite chondrite suitable for diffusivity measurements. Heat capacity was determined from the elemental composition and density from a 3‐D laser scan of the sample. We find that the thermal conductivity of the enstatite chondrite material decreases more gradually as a function of temperature than expected, while the emissivity of the ureilitic material decreases at a rate of 9.5 × 10?5 K?1 above 770 K. The entry scenario is the result of the actual flight path being the boundary to the load the meteorite will be affected with when entering. An accurate heat load prediction depends on the thermophysical properties. Finally, based on these data, the breakup can be calculated accurately leading to a risk assessment for ground damage. 相似文献

Thermoluminescence sensitivity measurements have been made on 18 unequilibrated ordinary chondrites; 12 finds from Antarctica, 5 non-Antarctic finds and 1 fall. The TL sensitivities of these meteorites, normalized to Dhajala, range from 0.034 (St. Mary's County) to 2.3 (Allan Hills A78084), and, based primarily on these data, petrologic type assignments range from 3.3 (St. Mary's County) to 3.9 (Allan Hills A78084). Although the very low levels of metamorphism experienced by types 3.0 to ~3.4 evidently cause large changes in TL sensitivity, the new data demonstrate that they are unable to cause any appreciable homogenization of silicate compositions. We have therefore slightly revised the silicate heterogeneity ranges corresponding to the lower petrologic types.We have discovered that the temperature of maximum TL emission and the broadness of the major TL peak, vary systematically with TL sensitivity; as TL increases these parameters first decrease and then increase. Several mechanisms which could account, partially or completely, for the relationship between TL sensitivity and metamorphism are discussed. Those which involve the formation of feldspar—the TL phosphor in equilibrated meteorites—seem to be consistent with the trends in peak temperature and peak width since experiments on terrestrial albite show that the TL peak broadens and moves to higher temperatures as the stable form changes from the low (ordered) state to the high (disordered) state. (The post-metamorphism equilibration temperature of type ~3.5 meteorites would then correspond to the transformation temperature for the high to low form of meteorite feldspar.) Other factors which may be involved are obscuration of the TL by carbonaceous material, changes in the composition of the phosphor and changes in the identity of the phosphor. 相似文献

The concentrations of 25 major, minor and trace elements have been determined in four clasts, a metal-rich inclusion and two dark metal-poor inclusions from the Abee enstatite chondrite. The clasts are heterogeneous, displaying 2-fold enrichments or depletions in some elements. The data suggest that there are two generations of metal, one with low, the other with high concentrations of refractory siderophiles. The other elemental patterns can be understood in terms of variations in the abundance of major minerals. We infer that Sc and Mn are located largely in the niningerite ((Fe,Mg)S), V in the troilite (FeS) and rare earth elements in the oldhamite (CaS).Heterogeneities among the clasts are probably primary, resulting from the accretion-agglomeration process, although shock processes in a regolithic setting remain a possibility provided that they were followed by a period of metamorphism sufficient to erase petrologic evidence.In the dark inclusions the concentrations of the rare earths, Eu excepted, are 4 × higher than mean EH levels; this infers enhanced amounts of CaS. The dark inclusions are low in siderophiles, Sc, Mn, K, Na and Al, implying low amounts of metal, niningerite and feldspar. The origin of the dark inclusions is unclear; they do not appear to be the result of a simple, single-stage process. 相似文献
