The biogeochemical alteration of an Mg-Fe orthopyroxene, reacted for 70 yr under arid conditions in a desert environment, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. For this purpose, an electron transparent cross-section of the interface between a single microorganism, an orthopyroxene and nanometer-sized calcite crystals, was prepared with a focused ion beam system. X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry and electron energy loss spectroscopy allowed one to clearly distinguish the microorganism en route to fossilization from the nanometer-sized calcite crystals, showing the usefulness of such a protocol for identifying unambiguously traces of life in rocks. A 100-nm-deep depression was observed in the orthopyroxene close to the microorganism, suggesting an enhanced dissolution mediated by the microbe. However, an Al- and Si-rich amorphous altered layer restricted to the area just below the microorganism could be associated with decreased silicate dissolution rates at this location, suggesting complex effects of the microorganism on the silicate dissolution process. The close association observed between silicate dissolution and carbonate formation at the micrometer scale suggests that Urey-type CO2 sequestration reactions could be mediated by microorganisms under arid conditions.  相似文献

The evolution of the demarcation of the political territories in South Africa has resulted in spatial competition between political structures, conservation authorities and local communities. The current multi-governance policies are attempting to overcome the problems created by the political structures of the apartheid era – during which time the declaration of natural areas for conservation resulted in forced removals and negative perceptions of conservation. The case study of Mabibi, within the confines of the Maputaland coast, is a typical example that reflects the history of the past and the conflicts of the present.  相似文献

Tidal bores may appear in some estuaries when the tides quickly reach a high level. This phenomenon is rare but has a strong impact during its short duration: i.e. the river bed is significantly eroded and sediments are then transported. In this paper, the trajectories of suspended particles induced by this flow are numerically studied. Four undular bores with Froude numbers between 1.1 and 1.2 are studied. Despite similar Froude numbers, various initial flow conditions were selected to produce or not an inversion of the flow direction during the bore passage. The particle trajectories associated with each distinct flow configuration are presented and analyzed. These trajectories, estimated by solving the Maxey-Riley equation, appear to be very different even though the Froude numbers of flows are similar. These observations are important because the Froude number is often used to characterize a tidal bore as it describes well the free surface, however, it cannot describe the sediment transport. Finally, Chen's model of wave-current interactions is adapted to fit the cases studied and is applied to the four bores simulated. The results highlight that this latter model can reproduce the observed trajectories and dissociate their different components. From this model, it is shown that the inertial and Basset history effects can be neglected compared to the gravity and flow entrainment effects due to the viscous drag when one wants to determine the long-term trajectories of suspended particles.  相似文献

Rising in the Andes, the Madeira River drains the southwestern part of the Amazon basin, which is characterized by high geographical, biological and climatic diversity. This study uses daily records to assess the spatio-temporal runoff variability in the Madeira sub-basins. Results show that inter-annual variability of both discharge and rainfall differs between Andean and lowland tributaries. High-flow discharge variability in the Andean tributaries and the Guaporé River is mostly related to sea surface temperature (SST) in the equatorial Pacific in austral summer, while tropical North Atlantic (TNA) SST modulates rainfall and discharge variability in the lowlands. There also is a downward trend in the low-flow discharge of the lowland tributaries which is not observed in the Andes. Because low-flow discharge values at most lowland stations are negatively related to the SST in the tropical North Atlantic, these trends could be explained by the warming of this ocean since the 1970s.

In this article, we propose an investigation of the modifications of the hydrological response of two Peruvian Amazonas–Andes basins in relationship with the modifications of the precipitation and evapotranspiration rates inferred by the IPCC. These two basins integrate around 10% of the total area of the Amazonian basin. These estimations are based on the application of two monthly hydrological models, GR2M and MWB3, and the climatic projections come from BCM2, CSMK3 and MIHR models for A1B and B1 emission scenarios (SCE A1B and SCE B1). Projections are approximated by two simple scenarios (anomalies and horizon) and annual rainfall rates, evapotranspiration rates and discharge were estimated for the 2020s (2008–2040), 2050s (2041–2070) and 2080s (2071–2099). Annual discharge shows increasing trend over Requena basin (Ucayali river), Puerto Inca basin (Pachitea river), Tambo basin (Tambo river) and Mejorada basin (Mantaro river) while discharge shows decreasing trend over the Chazuta basin (Huallaga river), the Maldonadillo basin (Urubamba river) and the Pisac basin (Vilcanota river). Monthly discharge at the outlet of Puerto Inca, Tambo and Mejorada basins shows increasing trends for all seasons. Trends to decrease are estimated in autumn discharge over the Requena basin and spring discharge over Pisac basin as well as summer and autumn discharges over both the Chazuta and the Maldonadillo basins. This study presents the data collected within the framework of an Observatory of Research in Environment on the Amazonian Basin—the ORE HYBAM. It relates to the dissolved and solid loads of the two main rivers of French Guiana, the Maroni and Oyapock rivers, running on the Guiana Shield and draining respectively 64 230 and 24 630 km2. The low coefficient of variation of the average annual flows of the two rivers indicates an inter‐annual hydrological stability probably related to the immediate vicinity of the Atlantic Ocean. The sedimentary load is mainly composed of quartz and kaolinite. The total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations are among the world's lowest values; they range from 1 to 130 mg l−1 during the hydrological cycle, with averages of 22 and 12 mg l−1, for the Maroni and Oyapock rivers, respectively. The seasonal variability of these values is significantly higher than that of hydrologic flows, but without simple relationship with the discharge. Water chemical composition of the two rivers indicates a very weak mineralization, very similar to that found in the Amazonian rivers running on the Brazilian and Guianese shields, and in the Congo River and its tributaries in the Central African Shield. Seasonal variations are observed in both basins; they correspond to higher concentrations during low water stage (from October to February) and to more diluted water during the flood, from April to July. A signature enriched in Cl is present at the Saut Maripa station on the Oyapock River indicating a more marked influence of the trade winds in this basin. The computation of atmospheric contributions to ions budget indicated a weak contribution for Ca2+ and Mg2+, which originates mainly from water‐rock interactions in both stations, while more than half of Na+ is derived from atmospheric inputs. Plant-available reserves of major base cations, Ca2+ and Mg2+, decreased markedly in soils over the past century, thus posing a potential threat to forest ecosystem health. Trees are thought to obtain dissolved Ca2+ ions mainly from an easily accessible soil-water reservoir also termed the ‘exchangeable cation pool’. The status of Ca reserves in this soil pool is sensitive to anthropogenic perturbations such as soil acidification induced by acid rain and/or excessive timber harvesting. Here we show that in a base-poor forest of the northeastern USA (i.e. Wachusett Mountain, Massachusetts) the ‘exchangeable Ca pool’ of deeper mineral soils has a unique isotope signature that is significantly enriched in the radiogenic 40Ca, due to the dissolution of K-rich silicate minerals such as biotite. Using a simple isotope mass balance, and assuming that the input of Ca from biotite has a εCa signature of ∼16, the results of our calculation indicate that the weathering of biotite may supply a sizeable fraction, up to 25%, of Ca2+ ions into the ‘exchangeable cation pool’ of deeper mineral soils. Importantly, samples of local vegetation (i.e. woody tissues of red oak) show no detectable excess of the radiogenic 40Ca, and based on our model the upper limit of a possible biotite-derived Ca contribution in vegetation is estimated at ∼5%. We also found no evidence of the radiogenic 40Ca signal in the samples of forest floor and the uppermost organic-rich soils (0-15 cm depth), which in turn suggest that over the long-term development of the forest and its organic matter accumulation, the vegetation growth must have also relied primarily on the non-radiogenic Ca sources. Based on our experimental data, such sources may include (i) wet atmospheric deposition, (ii) the organically-complexed Ca in topsoil horizons, and (iii) chemical weathering and/or fungal-mediated dissolution of apatite and Ca-rich plagioclase. Hence, our stable and radiogenic Ca isotope data indicate that the studied base-poor forest is able to bypass the ‘exchangeable cation pool’ of deeper (i.e. below 15 cm) mineral soils, and still manages to meet its nutritional requirements with respect to Ca. Another important implication of this study is that the organically-complexed Ca in the topsoil horizon (0-15 cm depth) has to be tightly bound to the ion exchange sites, otherwise the large radiogenic 40Ca signatures present in the ‘exchangeable cation pool’ of deep mineral soils would be swamped by the downward gravitational flux of non-radiogenic Ca from the decaying organic matter and litterfall. Hence, the limited mobility of the organically-complexed Ca in soils and its tight biological cycling could explain the lack of a significant impact of vegetation on the Ca isotope systematics observed in large rivers.  相似文献

Abstract

We present a procedure for estimating Q95 low flows in both gauged and ungauged catchments where Q95 is the flow that is exceeded 95% of the time. For each step of the estimation procedure, a number of alternative methods was tested on the Austrian data set by leave-one-out cross-validation, and the method that performed best was used in the final procedure. To maximise the accuracy of the estimates, we combined relevant sources of information including long streamflow records, short streamflow records, and catchment characteristics, according to data availability. Rather than deriving a single low flow estimate for each catchment, we estimated lower and upper confidence limits to allow local information to be incorporated in a practical application of the procedure. The components of the procedure consist of temporal (climate) adjustments for short records; grouping catchments into eight seasonality-based regions; regional regressions of low flows with catchment characteristics; spatial adjustments for exploiting local streamflow data; and uncertainty assessment. The results are maps of lower and upper confidence limits of low flow discharges for 21 000 sub-catchments in Austria.  相似文献
